Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06

Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D

Very nice overview of Elfman work. Insufficient by itself but worth having along with the full soundtracks. Bonus disc is a nice extra.

I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!

Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this,then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.

Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04

The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.

Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.

Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.

This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.

If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

Thankfully, Jerry Goldsmith's contribution to The Mummy isn't all bombast. In fact, the composer behind such varied scores as The Omen, Chinatown, and Planet of the Apes throws a little bit of everything into The Mummy's sonic stew and turns in a semi-memorable score that never seems to slow down for too long. Goldsmith weds swatches of Middle Eastern-sounding melodies into the primarily synth-driven score to good effect on such tracks as "Giza Port" and "The Caravan." Frenetic string and percussive passages in "Night Borders" and "Mumia Attack" are plenty tense, but also feature otherworldy sci-fi sound effects, while on "Rebirth" the sounds of synth'd voices make for an ethereal effect over the orchestrations. Mummified this score isn't, but clichéd it, unfortunately, is. --Jason Verlinde

The Sand Volcano.......2007-01-14

1999 was a busy year for the late great Goldsmith with him scoring three big movies that year. You'd think with such a busy schedule he'd switch into auto pilot and do what other successful composers do which is copy paste their music, but Goldsmith gave us a gem with each album and this one is no exception

The album starts off with "Imhotep" which starts off very mysteriously with an amazing use of strings and creepy vocal then switches to this loud bombastic piece for the amazing shot of old Egypt. I really love that piece because it captures the sense of awe that we the audience feel as we see this amazing shot in the movie. The choir at the 45 mark just gets me everytime I listen to it.

It's really hard to pick a highlight when it comes to a Goldsmith album but if I were forced to pick I'd probably go with "Imhotep", "Camel Race", "Rebirth" and "The Sand Volcano". The last 90 seconds of "Rebirth" is a blast to listen to because it's the great "Heroes March" theme in its full glory. I think it's for the scene when Rick fights the 12 Mummy Priests. "Camel Race" to me is the most fun track on the album. It's very light and makes you bop your head and tap your feet when you listen to it. "Sand Volcano" is the last piece on the album and what a fantastic piece it is. It starts in action mode then calms down. The best part of the track is the expansion of the love theme which accompanies the end credits to the movie. Goldsmith utilizes a solo trumpet towards the end that should explain to people why a lot of us think Goldsmith is the greatest film composer of all time.

Die hard fans of the late great master composer owe it to themselves to pick up this amazing soundtrack.

This is a pretty solid action score, but it wasn't as exotic as I was expecting. You'd think a movie that takes place in Egypt and centers around Egyptian mythology would have something a little more cultural-sounding, but there's not much unique about it.

It still has a good energy and momentum to it though.

A great mix of middle eastern music.......2005-06-19

I have to admit that it took me a while to finally force myself to buy this soundtrack. I had seen the movie several times before and it had always been one of my favorites. When I first heard the music, it ammediatly caught my attention. I loved how it had a blend of a middle eastern style along with your regular film music, I don't see this mixture very often, and I just really enjoyed listening to it. I have actually been to Egypt and I lived in Kuwait for 7 years, so the middle east will always remain special to me.

The orchestration is excellent. If you saw the film, you will recognize the music for sure. All of the music was composed by Jerry Goldsmith. I had never heard that name before but he must be pretty talented. The music can be loud and dynamic one minute, and soft and soothing the next. That was another blend that I enjoyed. I noticed that there was one main tune that was played throughout the soundtrack whic was supposed to be the love theme. That might, in many cases, be the theme of the soundtrack.

The reason why it took me so long to buy this was because in the back of my head I was thinking that I am going to listen to it once and then just put it away. That's the same thing that happened with the Raiders of the Lost Ark(it's been ages since I listened to that). That will always be the case with some albums, but not with this one.

Buy this album and take a journey into the middle east...

Wow!.......2005-03-19

First of all, I am a big fan of movie scores, "and mummy movies." This score totaly impresses me. It begins slowly, a lone stringed instrument with light choir and low strings. Bang! drums, brass, thumping sounds that you put with the amazing Cairo scene from the film. Following this is the tragic, yet sinister love theme for Imhotep and Anak Sanu Mun. Ending this track is the terrible murder of Pharoh by his bride to be, and his high priest.

The score only goes uphill after this phenominal opening, and impresses on every way possible.

A must have, the new never wears off!

Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03

This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?

Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11

Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.

Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).

Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".

It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.

But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.

It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!

Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31

Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.

However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.

However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.

Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Having begun life as a modest 1932 horror vehicle for the great Boris Karloff, the Mummy franchise went on to encompass a whole cycle of classic Universal fright flicks and, most recently, a big-budget, if equally popcorn-friendly, reincarnation laden with computer-generated effects. What with the success of Gladiator, The Mummy Returns also expanded its scope to include the Rock's Scorpion King and his legions, giving the saga a distinct sword 'n' sandal epic sweep in the bargain. Alan Silvestri's music echoes those concerns in a score that's one part galloping '40s throwback, with a dash of Stravinsky-lite, and heavy on the Zimmeresque Sturm und Drang. It's a far cry from Silvestri's mostly comedic canon, and a radical departure from The Mexican, its breezy, tongue-in-cheek predecessor. And if the sheer scale of the score's blazing brass, thundering tympani, crashing cymbals, and soaring choirs effectively disguise its paucity of memorable melodies and substance, they perfectly echo the thrill-ride intentions of the film itself. Live and über-producer Glen Ballard also contribute the obligatory pop end-title song, "Forever May Not Be Long Enough," a darkly urgent little ditty with suitably exotic production flourishes. --Jerry McCulley

Still good, but can it compare with the first?.......2005-07-13

I loved the first soundtrack. The fast action music, the eerie Imhotep themes, the romatic love themes, they were all good. Yet, I felt a little disappointed when I bought this soundtrack. I tried to sit and listen to it, to remember the scenes and where each track fit it, but I found it was not quite on the same level as The Mummy soundtrack. It's still a good sountrack, of course, but I found it to be a bit lacking. Especially next to the first. In all, I'd recommend it, though.

I love both the mummy and the mummy returns. This is a truely amazing score.

Track by track comparison with film.......2003-07-01

The tracks herein correspond to those on the Collector's Edition DVD - none have been 're-recorded to get a musically superior version', although some were chopped up for actual use in the film. I'll indicate which parts of the film correspond to each track, to help people decide for themselves what they'll be getting out of this CD.

My favorite is 'Sandcastles', followed by 'The Mummy Returns', and maybe the fight scene sequence from 'Evy Kidnapped'. Most of the other pieces chop and change a great deal to accommodate the visuals, and tend not to stick in my memory (and I've just listened to the lot, mind you).

"The Legend of the Scorpion King" opens as the Univeral Pictures sunrise logo comes up, beginning with a martial emphasis on brass and snare drums as the Scorpion King's mortal army goes into battle. The piece changes to a dirge-like theme as the beaten remnants of the Scorpion King's army are driven into the Ahm-Shere desert, then shifts back into a martial theme with deeper, darker tones after the Scorpion King makes his pact and returns with Anubis' army. The piece ends with the dissolve from ancient Egypt to the 1933 O'Connell expedition.

"Scorpion Shoes" opens with the standard stylized cacophony for a gross-out insect scene, which in this case is our *second* sight of the tomb's scorpions - beginning not with the O'Connells' entrance (they're not impressed), but with the thug's shock when he first encounters them. The piece changes its emotional tone as it follows the cuts back and forth between the O'Connells in the bracelet's chamber to the lighter moments as Alex torments the invaders with his slingshot. (The piece ends on Alex's line, 'Mom, Dad - I can explain everything.')

"Imhotep Unearthed" doesn't appear to have been completely included in the film, but it's hard to tell given the volume of the music beneath the dialogue track. Its first flourish corresponds with the reappearance of the scarabs, then tracks the film through Imhotep's rediscovery until just after the cut to the O'Connells back in London. (The last dramatic flourishes of the piece weren't presented in musical sequence, but cut in with the bad guys' arrival at O'Connell manor, after 'Just an Oasis'.)

"Just an Oasis" opens as Evy speaks that line to Rick, working on persuading him to hunt for Ahm-Shere. The piece is built around the flute solo I think of as the romantic Evy/Rick theme.

"Bracelet Awakens" - creepy opening, building into very dramatic sweeping crescendo to accompany Alex's first vision of the bracelet's holographic 'map'.

"Evy Kidnapped" begins as Lok-nah first confronts Evy and Alex, through the subsequent fight scene, ending as Rick and company pull up to the Museum.

"Rick's Tattoo" begins just as Ardath sees it and explains its meaning, flowing through the procession sequences inside the museum as the Book of the Dead is deployed once again. (The piece isn't continuous on the film's own soundtrack, given the cuts to Ardath and Rick.) It flows into the next track, "Imhotep Reborn", through the romantic interlude as Imhotep meets his reincarnated princess again, ending with the bad guys realizing where the bracelet must be.

"My First Bus Ride" begins as Imhotep is presented with his gift - the chance to burn Evy alive in the British Museum; the battle sequences reprise a theme similar to that of the 'Kidnap' battle theme, continuing as our heroes flee the mummies via the double-decker bus. The sequence ends just as Ardath speaks the title line about this having been his first bus ride.

"The Mushy Part" picks up just after 'Bus Ride', opening with the Evy/Rick romantic theme, abruptly changing tone as Imhotep's thugs grab Alex, continuing through Imhotep's romantic theme with his first flashback, ending only with Rick's 'magic carpet' line.

"A Gift and a Curse" - title comes from Imhotep's line explaining the dangers of the bracelet to Alex, but beginning earlier just as the curator hands Anck the Book of the Dead, asking her to keep it with her always. The piece runs through the three stooges' meeting with Imhotep, ending just as Rick and company meet with Izzy at Magic Carpet Airways.

"Medjai Commanders" occurs in the film back-to-front, the second half played as the commanders first meet with Ardath outside Izzy's place, the first half played over the opening dirigible sequences.

"Evy Remembers" does NOT include the most memorable part of the flashback - the duel - but picks up just as the pharaoh congratulates both competitors. Consequently, the action sequence of the combat isn't included, but the lush romantic tryst between Imhotep and Anck, changing to action during their confrontation with the pharaoh and the ancient Medjai.

"Sandcastles" begins with 'we've lost them' at Karnak, flowing through all the rest of the sandcastle sequence until Imhotep casts his waterwall spell. Great piece, with a strong 'pursuit' flavor about it; goes well with the 'balloon' theme.

"We're in Trouble" (Izzy's line) picks up just after 'Sandcastles', covering the waterwall sequence until the dirigible's afterburners fizzle.

"Pygmy Attack" covers the 3-way battle, starting where the apparently shrunken head starts screaming until the curator delivers his 'the two of you must sacrifice yourselves for me' line. (Even *Jonathan* isn't *that* bad.)

"Come Back Evy" begins with a triumphal flourish as the bracelet unlocks itself, shifting shockingly with Anck's attack on Evy, ending after Rick's title line as he must leave Evy to track down her attackers.

"The Mummy Returns" - this medley actually *doesn't* correspond to the end credits sequence (a really nifty reprise of 'Sandcastles' that wasn't included for some silly reason).

"Forever May Not Be Long Enough" is technically part of the original soundtrack, as it appears over the latter part of the closing credits, beginning just as the complete cast list starts rolling. Unlike the rest of the soundtrack (which is purely instrumental), this is rock with vocals - a somewhat romantic take on Imhotep and Anck-su-namun.

One of Silvestri's finest........2003-04-19

Most of the personnel who worked on "The Mummy" returned for the sequel, but Jerry Goldsmith declined (he's not a great fan of the first movie). Fortunately, Alan Silvestri was a more than adequate replacement; he thrives on action-adventure, and he turns in a full-throttle score that if anything improves on Goldsmith's music for the first movie (and I realise that sounds like blasphemy to JG fans). Standout track: "My First Bus Ride," a stirring cue for a chase involving a double-decker bus that moves faster than any bus has a right to.

The Fantasy Album.......2007-05-09

You can't have too many Sci-Fi albums. This is a good addition to anyone's collection. A good crosssection of SF music. It even has music from The Thief of Bagdad from the 30s(?)

nice release from Silva.......2005-08-15

As with most of the recent Silva America releases, Silva Screen has compiled older recordings from previous CDs and added some new material exclusively for this release. In this case, Silva has recorded music from The first Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings films, both Mummy films and Gladiator. I'm not sure what else is new, but combine these excellent tracks with golden age material from Hermann and Rozsa, and some Elfman (Batman, Edward Scissorhands) and Williams (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Witches of Eastwick) for good measure, you have a heckuva compilation.

The performance is first rate with only the Raiders March being a subpar track.

Outstanding Fantasy Scores from Hit Fantasy Movies.......2003-04-05

If you're looking for some fantasy role-playing game backround music to play or just like mostly classical fantasy-esque music, this double CD contains excellent scores wrapped in whopping total of 140+ minutes worth of music.

Classic music from your favorite hit fantasy and action movies are found all over this huge, quality collection. You'll hear suites and sounds from outstanding films like Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, Willow, The Mummy, Harry Potter, Excalibur, Conan, Highlander, Batman, Edward Scissorhands and more.

A recent (2002) and impressive collection of musical scores, and by far the best CDs I've personally bought for fantasy themed music.

History repeats itself with this latest compilation from Silva Screen "Fantasy Album:Adventure & Fantasy at the Movies", a heap of music to digest within the twenty-eight tracks. All beautifully arranged and conducted by Paul Bateman and Nic Raine with the City Of Prague Orchestra in full force...with the helping hand of David Temple (choir master) of the Crouch End Festival Chorus. A perfect blend from brew master James Fitzpatrick(producer) who has impeccable foresight and taste in film music.

What I most enjoy about Silva, is the fact they always have the lesser recorded selections within the big picture...take for instance "THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD"(1958), "THE THREE WORLDS OF GULLIVER" (1960), "MYSTERIOUS ISLAND" (1961) and "JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS" (1963), all four composed by Bernard Herrmann who is in a class by himself, they'll never be another.

But for my money the highlight picks are "GLADITOR"(2000), Hans Zimmer's recreation of the spectacle that was Romes, with man against man, man against beast and the armies that clashed and fell under the powerful story that unfolds within this suite from the film ~ "BEETLEJUICE", "EDWARD SCISSORHANDS" and "BATMAN", each from the films of Tim Burton still ring true within the realm of great direction and storytelling, this can only be topped by composer Danny Elfman who adds the frosting to an appetizing treat ~ "LEGEND" (1985), can faeries, goblins, woodland spirits mix well with the Lord of Darkness...only the legendary Jerry Goldsmith can conjure up a tune to drive the entire cast into a frenzy with "FARIE DANCE/REUNITED", this is the stuff nightmares are made of with a happy ending of course.

With composers like Tan Dun, Randy Edelman, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, James Horner, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Brian May, Jerome Moross, Carl Orff, Basil Poledouris, Miklos Rozsa, Howard Shore, Alan Silvestri, John Williams and Hans Zimmer...one can only hope this will last forever. Silva, I don't know how you do it, but keep them coming...gotta love it!

I sat back with the lights dimmed and a cup of hot coffee and enjoyed the beautiful haunting music of years gone by. Memories abound.

Why doesn't this get a perfect five stars?

Simple reason.

The producers at Silva, for wahtever reason, decided to cut down their SHE suites and Hands of the Ripper suites.

On the previous Hammer releases, "Draculas - Classic Horror Films", released in 1993, recorded in 1989, they had seven additional minutes of "Hands of the Ripper" that could have been included on this set.

Additionally, The Devil Rides Out: Film Music of James Bernard, released in 1997, recorded in 1995 and 1996 had about a minute more of additional music from SHE, PLUS about seven minutes worth of suites from Quatermass and X: The Unknown.

Both discs in this new re-issue round out at around 68 minutes, so there was room for some of these omissions.

Silva Screen gets big kudos for a reissuing these recordeings in the remastered HDCD format, but I don't understand these omissions. In fact, one of the tracks included, "Vampire Hunter" isn't even from a Hammer film, and its the only recording on this collection not on previous Silva CD's.

Again, 5 stars for the performances, the 1989 performances with Neil Richardson and the Philharmonia are fantastic. (Dracula, Dracula: Prince of Darkness, Dracula Has Risen From The Grave, Taste the Blood of Dracula, Hands of the Ripper, Vampire Circus.)

Additionally, The Westminster Philharmonic under the baton of Kenneth Alwyn do an excellent job as usual (Kiss of the Vampire, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb, She, THe Abominable Snowman, Quatermass II and Curse of the Werewolf.) Finally, the City of Prague Philharmonic, who get a bad rap more often than they deserve round out hte album and IMHO, deliver the goods, under the trusty batons of Paul Bateman (Scars of Dracula, Frankenstein Created Woman, additionally, Bateman also plays the piano solo on Kiss of the Vampire.) and Nic Raine (The Devil Rides Out, One Million Years BC, When Dinosuars Ruled the Earth, Creatures The World Forgot, The Vampire Hunter)

I'd give it 4.5 stars if I could.

blood doesn't flow as easily in "KISS OF THE VAMPIRE", the score from Bernard is
seductive, sensual to say the least for "creatures of the night", masked ball scene blends
atmospheric trance-masquerade themes, intoxicating main title is hauntingly mesmerizing with
"VAMPIRE RHAPSODY", just listen to the piano solo from our character in the film Carl
Ravna (Barry Warren), son of Dr. Ravna (Noel Willman) along with daughter Sabena Ravna
(Jacqueline Wallis), a cult of vampires in early 20th century Bavarian, praying on a young
honeymoon couple...Bernard's rhapsody captures the listeners heart and BLOOD!

WEREWOLF", fine direction from Terence Fisher (director) with an outstanding cast Oliver
Reed (Leon-the Werewolf), Clifford Evans (Alfredo), Yvonne Romain (Servant Girl) and
Catherine Feller (Christina), Hammer's departure from the old stereotype of the beast is
refreshing, Reed's performance as the tormented sole, from man to wolf is touching, the score
by Ben Frankel is tense building at it's best, to say the least, setting the tone and mood for the
transformation with counterpoints is stimulating, inclusive orchestration development for what
lies ahead during a full moon.

Without a doubt the highlight pick hands down is "SHE", composer James Bernard gives of
himself without question, the SUITE takes the orchestra into lilting melodic exercises with
percussion chiming in, the harmonies are hypnotic blends of textured fabric, listen as The
Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Alwyn display stirring strings and
a solo harp run the scales in "THE ETERNAL FLAME AND THE DESTRUCTION OF
SHE", hold-fast arrangement has haunting echoes of Bernard's constant theme, with a final
beat from a drum in the percussion section.

Must make mention the cast of players that made this possible ~ The Philharmonia Orchestra,
The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, The Westminster Philharmonic Orchestra ~ and
their various conductors Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, Nic Raine and Neil
Richardson...supported by the illustrious staff from Silva Screen Records LTD ~ Reynold da

I was recently referred to this CD by a posting on the Internet Movie DataBase and figured it was worth the low price.

I have LONG sought an original soundtrack for this film, not just for the Academy Award nominated score, but also for Susanna Foster's wonderful voice.

As with most of The SoundTrack Factory's CD releases, the recordings are culled from the dialog+music+effects audio tracks from prints of the film themselves; but in the tragic absence of any other soundtrack CD for this film, the folks at SoundTrack Factory have done a creditable job.

They have taken the sound tracks, cleaned them up a bit, done some judicious trimming, editing, cutting and pasting and produced a series of 6 suites, each encompassing the major highlights of the score, including 90% of the opera sequences and a nice selection of the underscore, with barely a word or two of intrusive dialogue.

The CD presents approximately 45 minutes of the soundtrack, bolstered by an unusual 11 minute mini-suite of the underscore from the 1932 Karloff version of THE MUMMY.

It's a nice enough CD to have, but hopefully somebody out there will track down the original acetates or isolated music elements for this Oscar-nominated score...

Hammer (Not M.C.) "Wrap" Music.......2001-02-06

To begin with, the 1959 Hammer Films release "The Mummy" is one of their best. It boasts dazzling Technicolor photography, sumptuous sets, good performances, and is topped with a remarkable score by Franz Reizenstein, his only score for Hammer. And what a score! From its rousing theme, replete with chorus (somewhat reminiscent of Bernard Herrmann's and Alfred Newman's score for "The Egyptian"), to its insane xylophones, this is a horror/adventure film score par excellence. This is the complete score, taken from the actual soundtrack, and has been digitally cleaned up and enhanced.
