Twist of Lemmon/ Some Like It Hot
Editorial Reviews
Product Description
Sure, Jack was one of the great actors of our time, but did you know he played a mean piano? Sings a bit, too; and so these two long-out-of-print collectors' favorites (sporting great artwork which we've put on a lemon-colored background) reveal a true Renaissance man at work & play. Two 1959 Epic releases, and whether or not Jack plays it straight on Some Like It Hot, we'll never tell! This CD is the ONLY one available anywhere of Jack's. 24 tracks. 2001 release.

A bowl of lemons........2006-02-09
This CD features the two albums Jack Lemmon recorded for Epic Records in 1958/59.
Before he became an actor, Lemmon made a living as a pianist in saloons. So, after he had some success as an actor, it was natural that a record company would approach him about recording an album. Jack wanted to record an instrumental album featuring himself playing piano, but the record company wanted an album featuring him singing. So, they compromised and made an album with eight songs featuring Jack singing and four instrumentals with Jack on piano. Lemmon was actually a very good saloon style piano player, from the evidence of these instrumentals. As for his singing, well, there was a reason he wanted to make an instrumental album. He can carry a tune, but he doesn't have the most exciting voice. He actually sounds a lot like Regis Philbin, but hammier.
After Jack had a smash hit movie with "Some Like It Hot", he was brought back into the recording studio to capialize on that success. His second album featured songs from "Some Like It Hot", or from the same time period as the movie takes place (the Roaring '20s). The album once again features Jack singing eight times and playing piano four times. But this time around, there is only one instrumental. The other three songs with Jack on piano feature a group of girl singers singing the lyrics, while Lemmon plays a piano solo in the middle of the song.
Both albums are pretty dull. They should have just let Jack record instrumental albums of boogie woogie piano.
