Album Description
*A specially priced 2CD set with over 110 minutes of some of the greatest film music in the history of cinema.
*New digital recordings in spectacular and sound performed by the acclaimed City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra and National Youth Jazz Band.
*Includes world premiere recordings from "The Birdman Of Alcatraz," "Thoroughly Modern Millie," "Airplane!" and "An American Werewolf In London."
*In 2004 the world of cinema lost one of the most iconic figures in film composing. In a career that spanned half-a-century and over 250 films, Elmer Bernstein was responsible for writing the music to many of the greatest and most loved movies of all time ranging from "The Ten Commandments," "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Great Escape," through to "True Grit" and "Airplane!" This collection has been lovingly created and compiled as a tribute to a genius and true master of the art of film scoring.
Customer Reviews:
Sad Really Sad.......2007-05-13
These CDs don't meet the standards I would have expected from Elmer Bernstein's wonderful film music.
*Boring*
It just didn't have the energy one would expect from "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Man with the Golden Arm". I think the City of Prague and National Youth Jazz Orchestras were bargain orchestras used to make an inexpensive CD set of one of my favorite film composers. The conducting and arrangements were what made this an obviously bad album.
An excellent movie themes antology by ELMER BERNSTEIN.......2007-05-10
Silva Screen Records, presents this antology of the music from the late great composer/conductor ELMER BERNSTEIN, who supervised this recording just before die.
Played the The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, and conducted by his one time assistant James Fitzpatrick
Recorded in HDCD and Dolby Surround
Excellent.......2007-04-22
it's unfortunate that more tracks weren't able to be recorded as theree was a good 15-20 minutes of space remaining on both discs. Regardless, this is an excellent sampler, especially in conjunction with Varese's Bernstein sampler including rare stuff like the Black Cualdron.
With regards to this silva set, these recordings range back to 1994, with Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit being recorded for a John Wayne CD and Bridge At Remagen for a CD of classic War themes. The Great Escape was also recorded for that CD, but producer James Fitzpatrick opted to record a new arrangement (same with Magnificent Seven). In '97, The Buccaneer for included on a Swashbucklers disc, while Heavy Metal was on the popular 'Space and Beyond' compilation. In '98, the world premiere recording of Airplane first appeared on a DISASTERS film disc. So while it may technically be the world premiere RECORDING it certainly is not the world premiere CD RELEASE of that recording. Ghostbusters was included on Space 3: Beyond the Final Frontier, the second followup to the popular 'Space and Beyond'. Fast forward to 2002 and 4 recordings first appeared on WAY OUT WEST: ESSENTIAL WESTERN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION VOLUME TWO, those being The Comancheros, The Hallelujah Trail, The Scalphunters and The Shootist. Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild are from Silva's JAZZ IN FILM cd.
The remaining tracks were all newly recorded for this release. They are of course the strongest tracks, seeing as the City of Prague Philharmonic has improved over time. I do wonder though why they did not include the older arrangements of Great Escape and Mag. Seven as bonus tracks.
I also recommend the simultaneously released '40 years of Film Music: Jerry Goldsmith' for another great set honoring a late great film composer.
Great Film Music.......2007-03-09
This is a great recording of some of the best film music ever. From the
great westerns to the Theme from Airplane to music he did for television,
Bernstein was one of the greatest.
Fun, Powerfull music.......2007-02-17
It's great! It brings back memories of my dad. He loved John Wayne and the old cowboys of the Magnificent Seven. But it's nice just to listen and relax (it's not all cowboy music).

Amazon.com essential recording
The phrase "Time to meditate," as crooned by Ladysmith Black Mambazo in the song "Hello My Baby," might well be the most exquisitely sung line in all recorded music. Tastefully produced by Paul Simon following the success of Graceland, 1987's Shaka Zulu finds Ladysmith harmonizing as sweetly in English as they do in their native Zulu tongue (conveniently translated here). In addition to Christian and courting songs, Shaka's most interesting tunes provide glimpses into tribal culture. As Ladysmith observe in "Yibo Labo (These Are the Guys)": "There usually are problems with secret lovers / The elders never approve." --Richard Gehr

lifesavers song.......2006-08-13
what is the name of the lifesavers song and where can you get it
Hello to my baby.......2006-05-31
Oh, such sweet, sweet memories!! My husband played this CD in our delivery room when our son was born seven years ago. "Time to meditate. I send a messenger to tell you that I want to meet you! Come along, come along to kiss me!"
EVERYONE loves this music! Children, women, men... Am I leaving anyone out? It's sweet, thoughtful, masculine, sometimes playful, sometimes deadly serious, but always hauntingly soulful and lovely music.
African Treat.......2004-06-12
Thought I would give Ladysmith a try based on the good reviews it received here and was not dissapointed. The tracks are very rythmic and uplifting. The recording is very good.
excellent music.......2003-08-25
you can't go wrong with this cd. it's excellent uplifting and thoroughly enjoyable music.
One of those I take with me wherever I go.......2003-06-15
I have put it in my cd case when I am working on the road, I've taken it into my massage therapy office to listen to while working on clients, I play it when cleaning around the house... this is one of my most favored, versitile cd's in my collection. I find it relaxing when I need to unwind, and uplifting when I am feeling sluggish. It certainly will not to appeal to all tastes. Not everyone enjoys acapella harmonies or listening to music that is not in ones own language, so I cannot make a blanket "thumbs up" for each taste. If you enjoyed the beginning of the song, "Diamonds on the Souls of Her Shoes" on Paul Simon's *Graceland* cd, you have a pretty good taste of what this cd offers (sans Paul Simon)... and even more so.

Customer Reviews:
The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09
Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.
Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02
Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.
A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06
John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.
There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.
Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11
Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.
" one of cinema's greatest composers...John Barry".......2001-07-06

Ladysmith Black Mambazo, South Africa's instantly recognizable vocal group, follow up their immensely popular Best Of collection with a set of songs from throughout their 40-album, 25-year career. With a voice that teases and tickles one moment then rises in inspiration the next, Joseph Shabalala leads Ladysmith Black Mambazo, their voices joining in immaculate a cappella harmony as they sing glorious gospel tunes in their native languages of Zulu and Xhosa. They also revisit one of the songs that launched them into international fame on Paul Simon's Graceland album. "Homeless" is performed without Simon's help here and they've made it all their own. This is a fine collection of material from the group and features many songs never before released in the U.S. --Jeff Grubb
Customer Reviews:
Mambazo and God.......2006-11-27
I really wish there were a site with English translations for those who do not understand isiZulu. Ladysmith Black Mambazo's music puts your soul very close to God with their hymns and praise songs. A to Z, their music is soothing, reassuring and re-affirming. You'd do well to own this piece of Heaven.
Voices of Gold.......2002-11-22
I have had the pleasure of both owning 2 of their records and having heard them in concert. The harmony and beauty of the voices is food for the soul. As good as any choir or small group I have ever heard. This album and the Warner Bros Collection are my favorites.
Excellent and powerful music.......1999-06-05
Fans of world music, traditional hymns, minimalism, and linguistics will love this album. The best track is mislabeled however--the song printed as "Vuka Jona Sithandaze" is in fact called "Uphi Umhlobo" and was released as track 3 on the 1st Best-of album. I can only guess it appears here in error. No matter, since you'll want to play this track 400 times.
Rich, complex melodies woven with great expertise........1999-01-18
Ladysmith Black Mambazo is an extremely talented group of vocalists whose intricate, uplifting harmonies seem to be excecuted with great ease. The fluidity and rich depth of each member's voice comlement the overall beauty and peace which each piece conveys. I can't say enough about this CD!

Customer Reviews:
Great stuff for S/A music fans.......2004-11-23
This is good stuff for fans of S/A music.
Solomon Linda & His Original Evening Birds' recording of "Mbube" (aka Wimoweh) is well known to S/A music fans and is on numerous compilations, but along with this we get to hear our heroes on some other songs. These guys were really talented.
There are some other mbube groups featured in unreleased recordings and well as ultra-rare recordings from SABC radio. Some of these tunes feature minor instrumentation via piano or banjo, but these are as much fun as the acapella songs.
All of the songs are in Zulu, but you get an idea of what's going on as the titles of the songs are translated on the liner notes.
As a bonus, we have the VERY FIRST radio recording of Ladysmith Black Mambazo (1967)-the group that made this style internationally known. Thier sounds has remained consistant through the years.
If you like S/A music, you'll love this. Get it.
The real deal: an introduction into South African music.......2004-08-21
This is a great recording. Featuring the original stars of "Isicathamiya" and "Mbube" type singing like Solomon Linda and the Evening Birds, the Crocodiles and of course, the current Isicathamiya legends Ladysmith Black Mambazo with their first ever radio transcription, from 1967. This album is a great, brilliant and factual insight into South African music, with the original so-called 'Wimoweh', "Mbube". The latter sounded very original and yes, more rhythmic than the American versions. The inlay and booklet features information on the songs and artists, with a great picture of Ladysmith in 1968 and Solomon Linda's Evening Birds, in 1941. If you want to listen to the music that made Ladysmith and other stars famous for what they do today, buy this album. A definate 5 stars.
A smell of South Africa.......2001-05-07
This CD is a guide to South African music. It's reveal the roots of famous musicians like Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Miriam Makeba and others. The tracks vary from clasical chorals (listen to Mbube) to some African country music with nice instrumental parties. The only disadvantage is the recording quality of some tracks transferred from old LPs. Nothing to do - it's history!

Customer Reviews:
So it isn't politically correct...Jeez!.......2005-02-19
No Zulu war chants? This is a CD of music John Barry composed for the film Zulu. I imagine that the composer of the war chants
was someone very much entirely different. The chants are magnificent, don't get me wrong (didn't Ridley Scott transpose them to Gladiator, god knows how), but they don't belong here.
Another case of taking political correctness to an absurd extreme. "Color Sergeant Bourne, what's that shooting?!" "A rifle, Hughes." Zulu is only a great movie, made better by crap like Gladiator and Troy, and Barry's score is one of his three or four best.
WHAT A RIP OFF.......2004-01-21
No Zulu warriors singing?! The most moving parts of the movie aren't heard here folks. How sad! Makes one appreciate the soundtrack to "The Thin Red Line" that much more.
It's a shame..........2002-12-16
that the zulu chants aren't on this compilation, as that was the only interesting and memorable music in the film. In the final scene, where the zulus make their final attack against the british, the warriors sing a beautiful and haunting chant with oscillating harmonies which quickly become annoyingly interrupted when the british start singing one of their stiff and totally uninspiring anthems.
Zulu.......2002-11-16
It is very rare to see a film where the
English army takes a beating. But this
is one of them.
It depicts the Zulu nation as a force
to be reconed with. This film is
loaded with action and tension.
A very entertaining film.
"Barry is for heroes, Pvt. Hook..........2002-03-03
...the rest of ye will make do with Kenny G. on yer cd's, elevator music in yer brains, and a dull ringing in yer ears."
Whether you are stuck in traffic and running late for an important meeting, faced with cleaning out a garage full of junk that hasn't seen the light of day in decades, or just facing down a few thousand indigenous warriors, Barry's 'Zulu' score will keep your upper lip stiff no matter how great the odds.
I find I have a hard time not growling orders like Cpl. Allen every time I hear 'Rorke's Drift Threatened', or grinning demonically like Cpl. Schiess during 'First Zulu Appearance and Assault".
It is amazing that Barry could squeeze so much energy into a mere 20 minutes of music and still make it last the entire film (well diluted as it may be with Zulu chants)!
It is also interesting to note that the lyrics Barry wrote to the old Welsh paen of 'Men of Harlech' have become the national rugby cheer of Wales.
I think Pvt. Owen would like that.

EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14
WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.
Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15
This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.
The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!
Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!
"Epics featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra ~ 60 years of film scores".......2005-09-07
When I think of the "Golden Age of Hollywood", many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "EPICS:THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD ACCORDING TO HOLLYWOOD", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades right and up to the present 2005.
There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classics that even the youngsters today recognize...sweeping scores that capture the drama, mystery, adventure, action and romance...one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this...many nominated and winners by the Academy for Best Original Score...
Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come...this collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!
