5 out of 5 stars Blaze of Glory.......2007-06-08

I never thought I'd be able to find this CD but Amazon had it and it was shipped very fast. Great album. Just a great album with great songs from the movie which was a clasic western.

5 out of 5 stars Must own for BJ fans.......2007-05-07

This album is in my top 3 favorite Bon Jovi albums (even tho it is a solo record). In this record, you really get to hear just how powerful and gifted Jon's vocals are (with some exceptions - such as in NJ - usually only demonstrated live) - Santa Fe solidified in my mind, the assertion that Jon Bon Jovi was one of the most gifted singers in rock & pop music with very few people (in rock/pop) able to come close to his vocal abilities.

5 out of 5 stars CD.......2006-11-06

My Mom & I have listened to both of the Bon Jovi Albums and we like both "Have a Nice Day" & Cross Roads. We have listened to them both once and we love them.

5 out of 5 stars Soundtrack To Lame Western Movie Actually Has Deeper Cautionary Message.......2006-10-08

BLAZE OF GLORY is not a Bon Jovi album, but rather Jon Bon Jovi and session players doing the soundtrack of the terrible Emilio Estevez film YOUNG GUNS II. However, don't let that deter you from buying this album, because for an album associated with such a lame movie, the music and lyrics are of remarkably high quality. The lyrics seem at first to be standard Old West fare, but if your intake of Omega-3 fatty acids and B-vitamins is ample, you can tell without reading the lyric sheet- in other words, by just listening VERY HARD- that there is a deeper meaning to them. The songs actually form a cautionary suite that warns against getting into dangerous situations of ANY kind, inspiring me to never go anywhere without telling someone where I'll be, as well as influencing my predilection for putting up photos of pretty actresses on my wall as a deterrent to self-indulgent behavior. If I had not believed this interpretation of the lyrics, I would not be living on my own right now. If you've just gotten your first apartment, or are getting ready to, you MUST buy this album. It's Jon Bon Jovi's first truly serious work, presaging KEEP THE FAITH by two years, making it a pivotal moment in his career.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Gold.......2006-09-30

It's hard to classify this album in a genre, but musically it is a benchmark album that sets a standard that few can reach. What sets it apart from Bon Jovi (the band) records, is that it doesn't sound so polished and commercially viable. This is real, heartfelt compilation of songs that speak of life and anyone with a soul could relate to a few of these. "Santa Fe" is one of the greatest songs, lyrically and musically, that I have ever heard. It takes you to a state of mind that few songs do. The movie was decent, but it pales in comparison to this album. I wouldn't buy this album because of the movie, i would buy the movie because of the album.

Amazon.com essential recording

Director Edward Zwick's 1989 tale of the first company of black soldiers in the Union Army during the Civil War captured America's abiding fascination with that great struggle. However, its most unsung player was composer James Horner, who created one of his most grand and memorable scores. So memorable, in fact, that some of its rich cures have been recycled by other filmmakers and Horner himself. More than any other single work, it's Glory that's responsible for Horner's remarkable rise to the top of his profession in the '90s. --Jerry McCulley

Amazon.com

Director Ed Zwick's stirring, tragic Civil War epic inspires a gorgeous, deeply moving score from James Horner, who mirrors the story's bitter ironies and ultimate outcome through a main theme and recurring motifs that emphasize the elegiac over the conventionally heroic. While martial drums inevitably rustle beneath Horner's autumnal charts, the somber main theme, when stated by the Harlem Boys Choir, is at once beautiful and heartbreaking, telegraphing the fate of the story's regiment of African-American volunteers in the Union Army. The climactic battle scene, itself a marvel of cinematic impressionism, elicits a more urgent, insistent Latin theme reminiscent of Carl Orff, and just as dramatic. --Sam Sutherland

4 out of 5 stars Powerful Music.......2007-03-22

A fine music score for this great movie. The flow and sync with the movie was outstanding. James Horner is quite a composer.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Scores Ever Written.......2007-03-12

I first discovered James Horner's work when he wrote the score for "Titanic", and I've followed his career since, buying every James Horner score I could find that was released prior to "Titanic". This one is among my absolute all-time FAVORITE James Horner scores. The depiction of the Civil War is never lost, and its choral melody is both gorgeous and heart-wrenching. Every true James Horner fan NEEDS to have "Glory" in their collection. If you don't buy it, you are REALLY missing out.

Other Must-Have James Horner scores: Titanic, Field of Dreams

5 out of 5 stars Glory Sound track.......2007-02-22

A oscar award wining sound track, what else is there to say.

5 out of 5 stars This is the greatest film score by James Horner.......2006-09-26

This has been my favorite score since I started collecting movie music more than a decade ago. The piercing vocals, beautiful themes, and inspiring music recalls the excellent moments of the film for me every time. I may be a bit biased because I love the film so much, but anyone will find this score rewarding. Of special interest are the last four tracks. The first of those is the most beautiful rendition of the theme on the album and ends with some great percussion stuff. The second is the music played while they charge fort wagner. It's a paraphrase of the most famous music from Carmina Burana and ends very similiarly (which is to say, it ends wonderfully). The penultimate track is a mournful, heart-breaking rendition of the theme sung by the boys choir of harlem. It starts in unison and breaks into gorgeous harmony. The final track is wonderful--it introduces a new theme for the credits and restates the major themes again in a powerful way. I enjoy this album more every time I hear it.

5 out of 5 stars Glory, A Truly Glorious Soundtrack.......2006-09-25

This is James Horner's first soundtrack that brought him to fame. He went on to compose heart stirring themes in Braveheart and Titanic, but in my opinion, Glory is Horner's best.

The main theme is rousing, first starting with some light flutes then builds up into a beautiful harmony of strings, cellos, and drums. This main theme most prominantly found in "Preparing for Battle" and "A Call to Arms" has been recycled and been the subject to many variations of Horner's later scores and even by other "rival" composers. Another theme which sounds quite like the one in Glory is the main theme in Braveheart.

Horner has composed a truly magnificant score that invokes emotion from the listener; he brings the tension and the caranage back in "Charging Fort Wagner" and the majestic main theme most dominant as the African Americans muster and make ready for battle in "Preparing for Battle." Horner's use of the choir (I think more specifically the Boys Choir of Harlem) adds an African American soul to the score.

This score, in my opinion, oudoes Horner's later scores for Titanic and Braveheart.

Horner has crafted a true musical masterpiece with this score. Listen to it and prepare to be brought back to the Civil War and marching amongst African American soldiers as they assault Fort Wagner.

Football's appeal comes from the vicarious joys of seeing huge men racing around a field trying to knock each other's heads off, right? Not for the millions of people who grew up on the Sunday-morning highlight shows compiled by NFL films (which, through the magic of cable, can now be seen pretty much whenever you turn the TV on). The stylized slow-motion storytelling made the violence seem like a vicious ballet--something that Sam Peckinpah, John Woo, and Ringo Lam have also accomplished in their films--but what's a ballet without music? Sam Spence and Tom Hedden composed a series of classic themes that emphasized the relentless power and dangerous beauty of football (complete with marching drums, heroic horns, and dramatic string sections) to complement the highlights, and John Facenda's poetic narrations brought the whole thing together. Facenda possesses the deepest rumble of a voice this side of James Earl Jones, and listening to him narrate highlights form last week's game makes it sound as if the game were a timeless classic played decades in the past. The Power and the Glory is truly an unexpected pleasure. --Randy Silver

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great NFL Theme Music.......2007-07-05

The NFL off-season seems to last forever, but this can help. It is great music, fun to listen to, and a great way to pass the time. Don't be surprised if you find it as much fun as the NFL Films themselves. Also, great listening for exercise or driving.

5 out of 5 stars Time travel to the "Voice" and NFL greatness........2007-05-18

This is the greatest CD I ever bought. I feel like I have entered into a time machine and traveled back to the 70's and 80's when these films were still on TV. It reminds me of watching and listening to the great players like Ken "the Snake" Stabler QB of the LA Raiders, Gayle Sayres of the Chicago Bears, Bart Starr, and of course "Mean" Joe Greene. And of course this would be nothing without the commentary of the "Voice" John Facenda and the great music.

3 out of 5 stars Some good numbers.......2007-04-07

A bit like Dick Dale would do, these songs are largely variations or altered renditions of existing songs. Even so, one can't help but see the wide shots at the snap of the ball to the sounds of Ramblin Man from Gramblin. One can't help but see the coach carried off by the SB winners when listening to The Raiders, even if it was not the Raiders. In fact, I think Raiders fans often know this particular tune.

Other than that, there are some good numbers mixed in with audio clips. But it's somewhat inconsistent. And I wonder if some numbers that might have been more interesting were not included. I don't know. I like to think, that is, that I can put together an interesting 'mix tape'. I often wonder about those putting together 'greatest hits' albums, though. What have they left out that should be there?

5 out of 5 stars ahhh Football even during the Summer.......2007-03-15

personally i am a huge fanatic of football, be it HS, NCAA and the NFL!!!

this is a must for any football nut who spends hours on the NFL network, website, team sites etc!!!

relatively inexpensive this will make most football fans smile!!!

great Father's Day gift, B-Day or Christmas gift!!!!

5 out of 5 stars This will fire you up.......2007-01-30

Nothing can generate the feel of excitement that you get at the stadium unless you are actually there, but this CD brings you pretty close. It is particularly helpful if you have a team that is not doing too hot because the music can, at the very least, get your juices flowing.

5 out of 5 stars opening titles music?.......2006-02-08

Hi.

Does anyone know what is the music from the opening titles of the movie? It is before the song Omiya starts. It is not included in the CD and i'd like to know the title.

5 out of 5 stars Great Indian Mystery, well-done.......2005-07-16

This is a very nice album for esoteric enthusiasts to add to their Indian mix.

5 out of 5 stars I love Indian Music.......2005-07-05

I love the movie Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. Indira Varhma and Sarita Chowdery are very, very beautiful women. And the music in the movie was hott! Especially the song at Princess Tara's wedding where everyone is dancing and Maya is serving the guests in her beautiful red sari. It had a cool beat and I felt like dancing, Indian style!

5 out of 5 stars Kama Sutra = Beautiful Movie, Beautiful Music.......2005-06-27

Love the movie...cinematography is wonderful, a truely beautiful movie, everything is a feast for the eyes. The soundtrack is just as good, perfect blend of exotic music that can be enjoyed lounging around or even bellydanced to.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating!!!!.......2003-09-05

The songs are sensual, calming, meditative and spiritual. If you appreciate different cultures, this album is for you. Whenever i play this album i turn all the lights out, and light candles, burn incense and meditate. I highly recommend this album with monsoon wedding soundtrack. Everyone i know loves this album. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Bo Bice Shines!.......2007-04-18

The movie is fun, but the title track truly captures the entire campy, tongue-in-cheek spirit of Will Ferrell and "Blades of Glory." This song's lyrics are brilliantly funny, and the musical style transports me back to big-hair ballads of the 80's. However, the absolute best thing about the soundtrack is Bo Bice. This man can seriously sing--even when he's not being serious. Brilliant choice to perform this song, and the video they created is over the top. Gotta love the cheesy powder blue tuxedo on such a sexy man...

5 out of 5 stars Bo Bice's magnificent title track is destined to become a classic!.......2007-04-11

After I heard Bo Bice's magnificent rendition of the title track, I decided I just HAD to have this CD. Bo sings this hilarious song so earnestly and with such power... I feel compelled to listen to it over and over again! His voice just soars. On youtube, you can watch the music video of Bo singing "Blades of Glory" while hamming it up at a grand piano--in a powder blue tux, no less! Ben Stiller picked the perfect person to sing the title song for this movie because nobody could carry it off like Bo Bice does. I think this song is destined to become a classic.

I'm actually enjoying the entire album. Many of the songs make me want to move and dance, so I may just use this CD to exercise by. I was tempted to give it five stars for the title track alone, but I've decided to give it four stars because I'm not crazy about hearing spoken lines from the movie between the songs (is that commonly done for soundtracks nowadays?). I liked the movie and all the music on this album, but those spoken lines get a little old after awhile because I play the album often. In the movie itself, I particularly loved the gorgeous song by Sarah Brightman & Andrea Bocelli, so I was disappointed that it was not included on the CD. But the title track alone makes up for any of those minor shortcomings, and there's other good music on this album, so I recommend this CD as well worth the price!

4 out of 5 stars Just trying to help........2007-04-08

I do not own this album, but I gave it 4 stars because the music on it is fairly good. I almost bought this album in order to get the song that Jimmy McElroy skates to in the first skating scene, but that song is not on this album. So I did some research and located the song and I thought I would share it with anyone else looking for it. It is: Time To Say Goodbye by Sarah Brightman & Andrea Bocelli.

4 out of 5 stars It's worth the price just for the title track.......2007-04-03

Just to hear Bo Bice sing that title track with that full, glorious voice, it's worth the price of the entire CD.

3 out of 5 stars Savior of the Universe?!.......2007-04-03

First off, I don't own this item. I gave it three stars because it still contains several of the songs that were in the movie, but the one I really wanted was the Flash Gordon Theme by Queen. Where is it? Not only was it in the movie but it featured prominently. This song alone was going to cause me to buy this soundtrack, and the fact that the song is missing has really turned me off from the whole thing.

5 out of 5 stars See the movie, buy the soundtrack........2006-05-02

The Texas Western victory over Kentucky has got to be THE single most important game ever played in collegiate athletics. Only fitting that the soundtrack calls up the same emotion when you listen to it as watching the film surely does. Great songs, great artists, and great original scores. If you liked the movie, you gotta have this disc. GO MINERS!!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great old music back again.......2006-03-20

If you liked the movie, then you'll enjoy spinning the tunes from those days again. The music gave thid flick some flair and Alicia Keys does some great stuff to update some great old tunes.

3 out of 5 stars Glory Road....not so glorious.......2006-02-25

A few good songs but not many. Very dissapointed. Not enough scores from the movie.

5 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful soundtrack.......2006-01-15

I bought this CD right after I saw Glory Road today. My favorite track is People Get Ready by Alicia Keys. This is a great song about how if we have faith in God anything is possible. I loved her soulful delivery on this song very much. The title track Glory Road is very uplifting. I love the choir singing on this track. I also enjoyed the track entitled I Will Make The Darkness Light. This is such a moving song about fighting for what you believe in. Alicia sounds so sexy on this song. There are also some classic R and B songs like Twist and Shout, Uptight, and Dancing In The Street. These are delighful songs to listen and move to. There is a song by Otis Redding entitled I've Been Loving You Too Long To Stop Now. This is a heartfelt sincere love song, and it is one of my favorites. This is a wonderful soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Soundtrack.......2006-01-14

Too often it seems as if a soundtrack is a "stand alone" product to the movie. In the case of Glory Road, the soundtrack and movie brilliantly weaves the story of the Texas Western basketball team and the society it faced at home and on the road. Glory Road is by far the best sports movie produced for the big screen. The soundtrack should be a part of anyone's collection who not only has an appreciation of R&B, but who also wants to place the music chronicled in a historical context.

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

With its rural Scottish setting and thematic undercurrents of business versus local traditions and personal redemption, this Cinderella soccer tale seems to have a few things in common with Bill Forsyth's Local Hero, not the least of which is an evocative score by Dire Straits leader Mark Knopfler. The Scottish guitar hero again rises to the occasion, his acoustic "Sons of Scotland" theme underscoring the story's melancholy emotional landscape, if not necessarily its geographic one. To that end Knopfler bows to expected musical conventions by sprinkling the score with bagpipes, fiddles, and pennywhistles, yet shrewdly weaves them into a more modern, personal tapestry of guitar and pulsing rhythms (especially on the Highland reel-meets-electronica of "Four in a Row") familiar from his work with Dire Straits; tradition meets tempus fugit. Knopfler also serves up a trio of winning songs, whose tenor ranges from the understated macho anthem "He's the Man" to "Say Too Much," a dry, slinky cocktail of lounge jazz influences, and the melancholy folk lament "All That I Have in the World." While Knopfler's contemporary scoring efforts have been sparse and sometimes uneven, this soundtrack seems the perfect match of material and musician. --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars Another nice soundtrack from MK.......2002-06-17

These soundtrack CDs have become a nice way to get some original material from MK between his solo projects. This is no exception. The instrumentals are really nice and the contemporary tunes range from the typical DS style tune to material more like his solo work (I'm thinking Golden Heart here). Of course, I haven't even seen the movie yet and don't know the context for which these tunes were written. This CD is longer time-wise than the last soundtrack (Wag the Dog), but still a little short for today's CD media standards (38 min.).

3 out of 5 stars Check out these other soundtracks.......2002-05-30

I'm a huge MK fan, but I was a little disappointed with this one. For a couple of fantastic MK soundtracks with a Celtic lilt, check out "Local Hero" and "Cal". Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad soundtrack, but I didn't feel like it was as good as MK's other work.

4 out of 5 stars Good Mood Music...Not His Best OST.......2002-05-03

I've long enjoyed the Dire Straits' guitar sound and have been a fan of the Knopfler Brothers for a long long time. While I prefer the Dire Straits albums, or the solo albums by David or Mark, the soundtracks that Mark has composed over the past 20 years have found a comfortable spot on the cd rack as well. And this release doesn't vary the formula from his previous soundtracks too much at all (although it is much more a Knopfler album than the somewhat annoying "Metroland").

Here are the basics: The cd is 38 minutes long. Mark Knopfler composed all the music and sings vocals on three tracks--the best of which, "He's the Man" would fit well on either of his solo releases. All the songs with vocals are more reminiscent of his work with the Notting Hillbillies or Chet Atkins. What I'm trying to say is these songs have a little more country sound to them. The other eight songs are instumentals and have a Celtic flavor to them. In fact, the entire album (aside from the vocal tracks) is very familiar--it sounds a heckuva lot like the "Local Hero" soundtrack. The songs feature Celtic instrumentation and the primary theme throughout sounds very much like 'Going Home'. Additionally, as you'd expect, this OST features Guy Fletcher on keyboards! Overall, an enjoyable soundtrack, but a tad too short and familiar.

3 out of 5 stars These are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks.......2007-01-21

I was disappointed that these are not the same arrangements as the original movie soundtracks. For example, in Colonel Bogey, the countermarch from the movie soundtrack is not included in the arrangement on this CD. Don't get me wrong, the songs are good, but I would have preferred the same arrangements as the original movies.

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding compilation.......2006-08-25

This compilation is superb and a real must-buy. From Band of Brothers to A Bridge Too Far: every war movie theme is represented here. An all time classic.

3 out of 5 stars The really good ones are missing........2005-07-18

While this compilation has some masterpieces such as the theme from The Great Escape and Is Paris Burning, it's missing some of the finest tracts ever written. Where is the theme from Victory and Ernest Gold's stirring epic from Cross of Iron? The closing theme from Inchon was also a feast for the ears, but it's not here. It was written by Jerry Goldsmith, one of the foremost soundtrack composers of our time. Instead we're subjected to the likes of Hanover Street and The English Patient. I'll admit Inchon and Victory weren't Academy Award winning movies, but their soundtracks were second to none. As John Stossel would say," Give me a break"!!!

5 out of 5 stars "many were winners by the Academy for best scores".......2004-05-26
