Customer Reviews:
Did you other reviewers ever even LISTEN to this?.......2007-06-26
Don't get me wrong, DG is in my opinion the greatest guitar player there ever was. He mastered several genres on guitar and could change from one to the other at the drop of a hat. Danny does everybody....but nobody does Danny. I've got most all of his official releases and a few bootlegs also and am pretty well informed as to DG.....but I don't understand one thing:
Why does no other reviewer bother to tell you that this is a pure jazz CD that is featuring Joshua Redman on horns and that Danny is audible on only three of the tracks? Yeah, he does his thing for those three tracks, but all in all, this is NOT really a Gatton CD and you won't hear much of him on this one. Also, this is REAL jazz - that three cups of coffee on an empty stomach, shaky handed - nerve jangled stuff that is impossible to relax to.
Just wanted to inform ya about what no one else would. I gave my copy to a Redman fan and he loved it - not my cup of tea.
A masterpiece.......2007-02-08
Of the many albums I have from Danny Gatton, this one is perhaps my favorite. This cd really puts Danny in a pure straight ahead jazz atmosphere and he preforms flawlessly. Danny's technique has always been such a mystery with his use of octaves, tremolos, double stops and lush chords. These are always preformed with a clean sound which is so refreshing from the typical shred masters of today. It is interesting to me that so many modern players seem to ignore these other aspects of virtuosity in the pursuit of just blinding speed. The other players all do a stellar job and compliment each other wonderfully. I am instantly transformed into New York's metropolis listening to jazz street musicians and smoke filled rooms of big band music. The last track "One for Lenny" is particularly moving and inspiring. I think I enjoyed this version even more than his version on "The Untouchable". A true gem from a lost giant.
A tour de force .......2006-11-22
The original concept of New York Stories was to bring a diverse selection of musicians together in the studio, record the jam session, and repeat the process with different players on subsequent volumes. The other volumes never happened, but this recording is one of the most exciting jazz discs I've ever heard. Those assembled on this gathering are: Danny Gatton (guitar), Bobby Watson (alto sax), Roy Hargrove (trumpet), Joshua Redman (tenor sax) on his recording debut, Franck Amsallem (piano), Charles Fambrough (bass), and Yuron Israel (drums). Each musician, less Redman, brought a composition to the session where it was recorded in the least takes possible, to create a spontaneous sound that is stellar! Unfortunately, this is currently out of print, but if you have never heard this and enjoy these artists, you owe it to yourself to seek out this masterwork.
Some People Just Don't Get It.......2006-09-08
As someone who knew Danny Gatton casually, I think his playing hardly needs defending, no matter what genre he chose to take on. But the text of "Disappointed" is a prime example of that dried-out, bloodless yen for conformity that marked the decades prior to the 90s among jazz "purists". Those who considered themselves "true" jazz afficianadoes tried relentlessly to shove the form into a mold and, predictably, it never worked. The pure nature of jazz, more than any other form of music, is change, and Danny Gatton will go down in guitar history as almost the "missing link", bridging rock, country, rockabilly, and jazz. I can only feel sad for anyone who hears what he's done in this context, with these players, and is too closed-off to appreciate it. One of the previous reviewers said it was fortunate that Gatton tried to sound like no one but Danny Gatton. Amen and Bless You. Danny's creativity, chops, melodic sense, rhythmic feel, and phrasing were certainly up to the task and the completely inappropriate attempt to compare him to Jim Hall simply slights two great guitarists. The Lenny Breau tribute is, I think, one of the most lyrical, moving, and informed pieces of jazz guitar chordal composition I've ever heard and his interplay with Redman and Hargrove throughout the disc is breathtaking. If he takes the jazz purists a little outside the box, good on him. Most could benefit vastly from being forced out past the edges of their tiny confines. Danny did just that in every genre and the music was always the better for it. What a player. What a loss.
Stunned by the two star review..............2006-07-02
This is by far one of the best examples of modern jazz ever recorded. It pays important respect to where jazz came from in the first place (blues) and explors the possibilities always present in this venue. The reviwer who gave a scant 2 star review knows little about jazz. One of those cats that digs the same old tunes done over and over like classical music, no doubt you'll find some Kenny G in his collection and confuse that with jazz as well.
Not being able to hear the guitar in the lower registers--lol. Oh well, one should not depend on BestBuy for all our electronic needs!
This cd is a classic if for no other reason than the fact that these cats will never play togather in the line up on the CD ever again. And they all all huge artist now. This was recorded when no one knew who any of these guys. So count yourself lucky to own it and enjoy. In reguards to the guitar playing on the CD i can only say that I am happy Danny Gatton didnt try and "sound" like anyone but Danny Gatton. His playing is amazing and is what makes this recording so fresh (telecaster bad jazz guitar choise, please! tell that to Mike Stern).

Customer Reviews:
Silence please!.......2006-08-30
My only reason for buying this CD is the track 4:33 by Frank Zappa. 4:33 minutes of total silence, well almost total silence because you can hear a little background noices in the control room of Frank. It is a very interesting cd. But if you are not a fan of Zappa or Cage, and you like to hear music I say: buy something else. If you are ready for an experiment: buy this one or the CD Roaratorio.
Georgia Stone the best antiwar composition to date.......2002-12-15
The whole collection is interesting. However, the great moment of this collection is the Ono contribution Georgia Stone. It's a fluxus symphony. Never have I heard a more poignant antiwar piece. It rates in power and beauty to Henryk Gorecki's Symphony #3 with soprano Dawn Upshaw. If anyone ever doubted the genius of Yoko Ono as being relevant and an artist of the highest calibre then listen to this masterpiece and you'll be jolted into her energy as an artist. Yoko, give us more of this kind of music.
unknown..but i'm real excited.......2001-06-05
Jspark wrote a review that totally grabbed my intrest..I did my senior art history project on John Cage..using random sheets of paper for the lecture. the idea of hitting the "random button" is a great idea..and the idea of running two disks at once is even neater..being a big fan of just about everybody on the cd..especially Laurie Anderson doesnt hurt either... I haven't heard it yet, but i think i'll be sticking with the 5 star rating.
What? 183 tracks? What for? There is a reason..........1999-08-03
It might be bewildering at first. The first disc has 98 tracks; the second, 85. If you listen straight through, you do not perceive any discontinuity. A collection of John Cage pieces performed by friends, collegues, and admirers. Frank Zappa (American composer [complete biographical blurb that he provided]) contributed 4'33". Laurie Anderson tells a few Merce Cunningham tales. Seems like a fun tribute from the git-go. But wait! (And this is where the fun begins!) Switch your CD player to the shuffle (random) mode. Now look what happens. It goes from, say, Yoko Ono's piece to the Kronos to the Moraz prepared piano performance to Ken Nordine's narration - all in the matter of seconds. It is a great to homage to Cage himself with the great use of the random chance operations that he might have enjoyed. Every performance of this disc becomes a unique experience (just like Cage). For even more fun, try playing both discs at the same time (provided, of course, you have the means; if not, improvise). Or add another sound source as well, like, say, the radio, or the television very low, or a tape of white noise. The possibilities are endless. I had the pleasure of trying this one day with FOUR players going on simulataneously: two with these discs, another with Miles Davis far in the background, the fourth with a disc of bird calls. It was quite a fun sound environment and I would not hesitate to try it again. But that was my experience. Your experience may be different.

Album Description
One of the wittiest and most insightful contemporary singer-songwriters, Christine Lavin, sets aside her customary focus on interpersonal relationships in the bewildering modern era to create a characteristic mixture of irreverent and genuine winter holiday songs. Discovering that she "just couldn't find a good Christmas/Kwanzaa/Solstice/ Chanukah/Ramadan/Boxing Day album," she rounded up seven other vocalists, a sackful of humorous, offbeat and sometimes moving seasonal songs, a couple of original stories, and created this lighthearted a cappella alternative to the usual cloying Christmas-season songbook.
Inspired by the vocal techniques of Sol "Roundman" Weber," Christine enlisted singer-songwriter Julie ("From a Distance") Gold, Emily Bindiger and Margaret Dorn from The Accidentals, the harmony octet that won the 2002 National A Cappella Competition, Ervin Drake (author of standards "Good Morning, Heartache" and "It Was a Very Good Year"), actor/director/singer David Lutken (a veteran of Broadway and Off-Broadway), R&B/gospel singer Gregory Clark, and artist/vocalist Andrea Vuocolo in this "all vocals/all ages" project (which Bindiger produced).
This CD contains tales of Christmas wishes gone wrong ("Polkadot Pancakes"), choral complaints and celebrations regarding seasonal food ("Scalloped Potatoes" and "Tacobel Canon," respectively), and a snippet of what sounds like munchkins on helium ("Elves"). The title track is a bedtime story Lavin wrote to explain why people decorate their Christmas trees (to weight them down so they won't escape, of course). Interspersed with these unorthodox holiday excursions are a handful of more conventional hymns to the peace and joy of December - the lovely "Dona Nobis Pacem," "A New Year's Round," "Lamb and Lion," and "Allelujah/Amen." There's also the slightly twisted "A Christmas/Kwanzaa/Solstice/Chanukah/Ramadan/Boxing Day Song," an express-lane version of "The 12 Days of Christmas" (retitled "Th 12 Dys f Chrstms") and "The All-Purpose Carol" (which ends with a resounding "Oy, mon!").
"Try NOT to sing along," challenges Lavin. "That's the hard part."
Customer Reviews:
Round and round and round.......2006-12-03
If you like rounds, overlapping voices, and echo effects, then you'll love this CD. I'm a big fan of Christine Lavin and enjoyed it quite a lot, but also found the style to be a little repetetive. My eight year old daughter loved the two stories - they had her complete attention. She got tired of the rounds quickly, though, and wanted me to skip past the taco bell canon (which I actually found pretty funny and enjoyable). You might want to choose your favorite songs to put in a mix, rather than listening to the album straight through more than the first few times.
No! Not polkadot pancakes!.......2005-12-23
This album features "favorite holiday songs and bedtime stories". Actually, there are only two stories here, both of which are cute stories that are aimed at kids. The rest of the album features Christine Lavin (and friends) singing acapella Christmas songs. There are some very old songs, along with some fairly new songs. The songs are all well sung, and certainly different from the songs on other acapella Christmas albums. This is a unique Christmas album, give it a listen.

Confident Acoustic Jazz.......2007-06-28
Sultry, subtle small combo jazz. Very nicely performed and recorded. Sounds like you are up close and personal with the band, who plays with understated, confident soul and swing. Heavy emphasis on Thelonius Monk and Wayne Shorter covers. All acoustic. Sophisticated and sweet.
