Howard Shore's music for the massively successful first film chapter of Tolkien's Ring saga won him the Oscar® for Best Original Score, something of a surprise given the music's ambitious scale and determinedly dark overtones, factors that handily blurred the line between typical film fantasy music and accomplished concert work. This is a must have for any Lord of the Rings fan or even any fan of music in general. I fell in love with the score to this beautiful trilogy and this complete set is perfect. I can't wait for the third installment!

As of recent, I have starting collecting again film music and the Lord of the Rings complete recordings was a natural.

The sound quality is very good and the packaging would make any collector of Lord of the Rings memorabilia quite happy. (I am not a collector but still appreciate the packaging.)

Contained in the package are cds with the tracks which I aptly moved to my computer in lossless format and also a DVD. The DVD turns out to be the entire collection of the CDS presented in DVD format with a menu. - Nice touch.

While I can't tell the difference of quality between the CDs and the DVD, I like the DVD set up when I want music in the background while I am working away.

Overall, a terrific collection and some my be disuaded by the price but I found this to be a particularly good set of recordings and well worth the cost.

Both "Two Towers" and "the Fellowship" are available and I'll wait for the 3rd to become available later (hopefully).

Let's be clear here - quality recordings, two formats provided, nice packaging for those that need it and a little costly. I can live with the latter and enjoy the music as anticipated.

Before viewing The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, I didn't think that anyone with great skill was composing music in the classical, romantic period style, anymore. I stand corrected! Howard Shore's music for the three LOTRs movies just blew me away. I rarely buy movie soundtracks because the soundtracks, divorced from the movie, don't stand up as well crafted pieces of music, on their own. If you have decent speakers, in your home theater set up, and a player that decodes 5.1 DVD-Audio soundtracks (I have a player that decodes both high end audio formats: SACD and DVD-A.) The sountrack on the DVD-A disk (5.1 channel, 3D sound!!), is phenominal! The use of the human voice as both a musical instrument and in songs to convey a message is something that I especially like in classical music and is iceing on the cake in Howard Shore's compositions. That he wrote music to take advantage of the vocal skills, of each individual vocalist, is one example of many where Howard Shore went the extra mile in composing his musical masterpieces for each movie.

Yes, this review is five years late, but frankly there's so much depth to the Lord of the Rings movies, that I consider them to be a prime source of entertainment, even now. I have always loved movie soundtracks, and recently acquired all three LOTR theatrical soundtrack CDs, which brings me to Gollum's Song.

I never paid much attention to the movies ending credit music until I got the Two Towers CD, which allowed me to really hear "Gollum's Song" for the first time. What a unique and haunting piece of music. It perfectly sums up Gollum's tragic history and future, but even more, is a metaphor for all who make terrible unreversable choices in their lives.

Fran Walsh wrote the bleak yet Tolkienesque lyrics, which were then scored in another sublime Howard Shore LOTR theme. But no words can aptly describe Emiliana Torinni's vocals. Her fearless interpretation of Gollum's descent into despair blows away the other two LOTR movie-ending songs. If Emiliana never finds material this good again, she can always be proud of this one searing performance, and we can be grateful for the world-class talents that came together in its creation.

What can I say that hasn't already been said about Howard Shore's magnificent score for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy? A soundtrack can define the whole atmosphere of a film, and this fully orchestrated work certainly does that with sweep, splendor and wonder, alternately humanizing (hobbit-izing?) the characters, imbuing the landscape with magic and capturing the world-shaking impact of events of mythic proportions. And this was no easy task considering the iconoclastic status of the story and the superb quality of Peter Jackson's filmmaking. This is a truly a soundtrack for the ages--a fitting accompaniment to a film for the ages! Every aspect of life, from the extreme to the mundane, is captured in this music. Listening to it can make every remembered moment of the movie come alive again in your mind, from the most horrific battle to the smallest moment of humor or kindness. In "The Two Towers," all the familiar themes from the first sound track return, reinvented as need be to tie the films together while adapting to new developments in the action and the story. In this album, I particularly like the hardanger fiddle-infused theme for the Rohirrim, the Viking-like horse-riders of the steppes, and the ponderous, quirky music for Treebeard, the walking, talking tree. I would have enjoyed a bit more of these distinctive elements, which lend levity and diversity to a sometimes depressing and overwhelmingly intense body of work. Here, they make all-too-brief appearances, at least from a listener's point of view. But soundtracks are ultimately slaves to the script, and in conjunction with the film itself, the timing and phrasing of Shore's music is impeccable. Mysterious, menacing, folksy or heroic, the total effect is utterly convincing and utterly transporting. Peter Jackson chose well when he picked Shore as his score writer. Very, very well! Be sure to get the scores from the other two movies in the trilogy as well - "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "Return of the King." They seem to be available in no end of different packagings, including ones with bonus DVDs about the creation of the score. Also, make sure to get the extended edition DVDs of the movie itself, with hours and hours of fascinating commentaries and behind-the-scenes documentaries about the making of the films. Truly a bargain at any price! And for a more comprehensive taste of hardanger fiddle music from Scandinavia, try the work of Annbjorg Lien or many of the varied releases from the NorthSide label.

Many of the other reviews here sum up how I feel about this music, so I'll be brief:

If you are a fan of these films but have never heard the music by itself, you're really missing out. After watching all 3 films probably 50 times now, I find that I enjoy the music from TTT the most so I finally bought the soundtrack. I knew it was great music but never really realized how powerful, emotional, and DARK it was until hearing this CD.

This is incredible music and I could kick myself for not buying the soundtracks sooner.

This is beautiful music. But you should be able to listen to it as it's meant to be listened to. Unfortunately, I work in a small cubicle area and share an office with hip-hop, country, and christian music fans. They are great people and we respect each other's spaces by playing our personal music preferences so as not to disturb each other. I live less than 3 miles from where I work, so I don't get to listen much in the car either. I would love to take a long road trip and play the CD's in my car. In the meantime, I play them at home and find myself recalling the movie scenes in which the music played.

In his review of the original publication of "The Two Towers", the great C.S. Lewis wrote: "Here are beauties which pierce like swords or burn like cold iron; here is a book that will break your heart."

Now Tolkien was a friend of his - so Lewis's objectivity is open to question. [And truth be told: for me, the books have never fully lived up to their reputation. Which meant that part of what made living through the release of the films so exciting was seeing how spectacularly this Tolkien geek (fat and bearded - like a good Tolkien geek should be) had managed to articulate the nobility and the beauty that the other Tolkien geeks had always seen in the books.] But to whatever extent those words are true of the novel, they are the best possible description of the music that Howard Shore wrote for its film adaptation.

In fact, I will claim that the scores are the single most important factor in the films being as great as they are. Consider the shot that introduces Shadowfax - a minor event in the narrative. [If you saw the movie, I am certain you have not forgotten it.] On paper, it would have verged on cheesy.

As filmed by Jackson, with a subtle use of slow motion and an anamorphic lens, it is a striking visual - conveying more artfully than the expository dialogue that this is no run-of-the-mill inn pony. Still, if you view the shot without sound, it is not much more than picturesque. It is left to Shore to do the impossible - to create a sound as epic yet exquisite as Tolkien's description of this legendary animal: "And there was one among them that may have been foaled in the morning of the world."

And this is just the horse, folks. Can you imagine having to create sounds worthy of evoking such immortal events as the fall of Gandalf from the Bridge of Barad'dur? The lonely sadness of the Shieldmaiden of Rohan? The hopeless stand of Theodin King at Helm's Deep? Not merely to find emotions that great within yourself, mind you - but to articulate them in practice through the workday medium of 100 union musicians and a 48-track recording studio? And to *actually accomplish it*?

If I ever meet Mr. Shore, I will be hard pressed not to fall to my knees and chant "We're not worthy!" This seems to me the surest proof that one has achieved the summit of one's art - to elicit not mere enjoyment, but gratitude.

This is not Howard Shore and no-one should think it is, however I found it a nice addition to my LOTR music collection. I have all the Shore music and it is outstanding - this is interesting, nowhere near as good, but very nice nonetheless. I especially like the soprano Charlotte Kinder on this CD and I would recommend it just for her contribution in some ways I prefer her to Renee Fleming, but that is of course a subjective statement. The other female singer is ok, but nothing special compared to the originals.

I had real high hopes for the soundtrack cause the movies ROCKED!!! This was a disappointment cause the vocal version of "Into the West" "sucked" cause the lady sounded like she lost her voice an faded in an out. They should have gotten Enya to do the vocals or AT LEAST the Into the West cause the ldy that sung it made the volume "suck" when I thought it would have a BIG finish but instead it had a BIG disappiontment!!!

Just be sure to read up on this closely... it's not the orchestra you hear in the movie, and you may be especially disappointed when you hear the vocal tracts - gone are great talents Enya and Annie Lennox, replaced by no-name voices. This is not BAD music, but don't think you're a genius for capturing the music of the movies on one inexpensive 2-CD set.

Howard Shore's scores to the three Lord of the Rings movies are a classical masterpiece in their own right, and as such I don't mind hearing them played by a different orchestra. While I prefer the originals on the whole, this set has some very nice things to recommend it. The best part is that you get instrumental renditions of the end credits song from each film. My favorite is "Into the West," from The Return of the King, with a cello replacing Annie Lennox's vocal performance. I really disliked Lennox's ugly, popified performance of the song, but I thought that the melody and orchestration were gorgeous, so I could not be more delighted to hear the song performed by a cello, with all original orchestration intact. That one track is worth $20 to me.

From the song titled "Concerning the Hobbits" which is lighthearted and cheerful, to "The Bridge of Khazad Dum" with it's intense shadowy drums and chants this collection of The Lord of the Rings trilogy's music ensues the essence of all three movies. My favorites are included along with some new added bonus favorites now. "May It Be," "Into the West," and "The Riders of Rohan." The vocals are absolutely beautiful in some of the songs with soothing women's voices that just glide along as if riding the wind of white cottony cloud. The only down side to the CD's that I found dissapointing was that the last three songs, not being sung by the original artists, don't quite rest as well with the soul as the original's, yet are still very beautifully executed. I have listened to them over and over again even as they are different artists. I highly recomend this soundtrack compelation to anyone who enjoy's the Lord of The Rings Movie's Music.

Bought and returned it with the first few minutes after sliding it into the player. The cover art is nice. As for the, um, muzak, I expected something less...fuzzy. Even the player hated it, spitting it out within seconds after tasting the first track.
If any of the original movie scores rate 5 stars, this rates a solid 10 black holes, IMHO.

The title line of this product says Enya (Composer), Roma Enya / Ryan (Composer), Annie / Walsh, Fran / Shore, Howard Lennox (Composer), Howard Shore (Composer), Fran Shore Howard / Walsh (Composer). Had I read the descriptions more closely, I would have seen that the composers were listed in a way that made no sense. Rather, the list merely is composed of the names of the writers, musicians, and composers of the music in Peter Jackson's trilogy, so that someone who is familiar with the music of the trilogy would be deceived into buying this subpar and inadequate product. The trade dress is deceptive enough that it might border on trademark/trade dress infringment of the real stuff.
If you are a fan of the LOTR soundtracks and/or Howard Shore, I would avoid this product and opt for: 1) the official soundtracks of the trilogy; and 2) The Lord of the Rings The Fellowship of the Ring The Complete Recordings. Let's hope they follow up with the Two Towers and the Return of the King Complete Recordings.

Too bad I can't give this one no stars. This disk is really bad. The performance is by a bland synthesizer "orchestra" without any of the depth or emotion you can find on the movie soundtracks. I would sell this CD back to the music store where I bought it, but then somebody else might be tempted to buy it. No; this disk is headed for the trash bin.

Simply put, this album corrupts Howard Shore's music in the same way the ring tried to corrupt Frodo. The more you listen to it, the more you realize you should have bought the original soundtrack.

I wish I had read the other reviews before buying. 78 minutes of meandering through (and maiming) Howard Shore's fantastic work. No focus, no edge to the playing, themes apparently put together at random. The horns are poorly synthesized and sound pretty cheezy. Spend your money on the movie soundtrack. I wish I had.

I picked up these CDs, thinking that it was the orchestral soundtrack to LOTR. Not exactly.

Upon listening to the contents, I noted that the recording sounded distinctly different from the orchestral music of the films. After closer inspection of the package, I see now that it is "performed by Mask."

I have a feeling that "Mask" is basically one person armed with a battery of synthesizers. Listening to the CDs, I have this mental image of Yanni, outfitted in chain mail, giving a one-man keyboard concert from the highest level of Minas Tirith....

Then again, Howard Shore's music is so strong that the CD's are not an entirely disagreeable listening experience. I find myself actually liking them at times, not for the synthesizer timbre, which is sometimes painful, but because they actually sometimes closely evoke the orchestral score.

But really, if you want the LOTR soundtrack, get the orchestral recording, not this!

Another viewer incorrectly stated that this was played by a "medicore orchestra" this is not an orchestra at all, it is a guy and his synthesizers. (who apparently goes by the code name: MASK"

I would save the money you would spend on this and buy the 2 disc set from Silva with the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Nic Raine, that is of course assuming you already have the original soundtracks and are looking for it being played by a different orchestra.

I don't find it hard to recommend this to anyone, especially if you love Howard Shore's orchestral pieces and are looking for a new spin on the original. Some call it mediocre, but I call it wonderful. This is good for a Roleplaying soundtrack, and/or for listening to while reading the books. If you purchase this, you won't be dissapointed.

If you are expecting this to be the actual soundtracks from the three films then you will be disappointed. What you have here is music composed for the movie and performed and recorded by a mediocre orchestra. The music is competent enough, but it is slow and subdued compared to the films. You could call this the "easy listening" accompaniment to LOTR. You see, the film took music from this score and punched it up to get the thrilling and dramatic effect. You only get faint echoes of that here.

On the other hand, I cannot be too hard on this 3 CD album because it really is a decent symphony based on the Rings. The themes are well written and appropriate, and tell the whole epic in musical form. The actual playing is what I would expect from any medium sized, second rate, city symphony orchestra- competent, but nothing more. Oh yes, and the voice on "Into the West" is NOT Annie Lennox....

I will say that this makes for good reading music on a quiet evening.

I played my official soundtrack CDs to death so I was looking for a replacement. This is not the real thing. A lot of the tracks aren't even on these, and the order on the rest of them is all mixed up. Bad quality sound, without the energy and passion of the original -- sounds like elevator music. There are even misspellings throughout the playlists. It is not readily obvious to the buyer that it isn't what you think it is, until it arrives.

The Fellowship volume won't play on one of my hard drives at all; it plays, but fuzzily, on my laptop. I gave up before trying it in the CD player in my vehicle.

I was expecting this to be the music from the movies - it isn't. It is nicely done, but if you're expecting the same style and sound as from the movies, look elsewhere (this sounds more MIDI than orchestra).

Howard Shore's music for the massively successful first film chapter of Tolkien's Ring saga won him the Oscar ® for Best Original Score, something of a surprise given the music's ambitious scale and determinedly dark overtones, factors that handily blurred the line between typical film fantasy music and accomplished concert work. Its sequel takes the same, often Wagnerian-scaled dramatic tack, following the film's story line into even more brooding and ominous dark corners. The previous film's Hobbit-inspired pastoralism is supplanted here by rich ethnic textures that expand the musical scope of Middle-earth and the World of Men; the Hardanger, a Norwegian fiddle, represents the Rohan and the North African rhaita colors the Mordor theme, while log drums, dilruba, wood xylophone, and cimbalon add intriguing textures elsewhere. What can I say that hasn't already been said about Howard Shore's magnificent score for the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy? A soundtrack can define the whole atmosphere of a film, and this fully orchestrated work certainly does that with sweep, splendor and wonder, alternately humanizing (hobbit-izing?) the characters, imbuing the landscape with magic and capturing the world-shaking impact of events of mythic proportions. And this was no easy task considering the iconoclastic status of the story and the superb quality of Peter Jackson's filmmaking. This is a truly a soundtrack for the ages--a fitting accompaniment to a film for the ages! Every aspect of life, from the extreme to the mundane, is captured in this music. Listening to it can make every remembered moment of the movie come alive again in your mind, from the most horrific battle to the smallest moment of humor or kindness. In "The Two Towers," all the familiar themes from the first sound track return, reinvented as need be to tie the films together while adapting to new developments in the action and the story. In this album, I particularly like the hardanger fiddle-infused theme for the Rohirrim, the Viking-like horse-riders of the steppes, and the ponderous, quirky music for Treebeard, the walking, talking tree. I would have enjoyed a bit more of these distinctive elements, which lend levity and diversity to a sometimes depressing and overwhelmingly intense body of work. Here, they make all-too-brief appearances, at least from a listener's point of view. But soundtracks are ultimately slaves to the script, and in conjunction with the film itself, the timing and phrasing of Shore's music is impeccable. Mysterious, menacing, folksy or heroic, the total effect is utterly convincing and utterly transporting. Peter Jackson chose well when he picked Shore as his score writer. Very, very well! Be sure to get the scores from the other two movies in the trilogy as well - "The Fellowship of the Ring" and "Return of the King." They seem to be available in no end of different packagings, including ones with bonus DVDs about the creation of the score. Also, make sure to get the extended edition DVDs of the movie itself, with hours and hours of fascinating commentaries and behind-the-scenes documentaries about the making of the films. Truly a bargain at any price! And for a more comprehensive taste of hardanger fiddle music from Scandinavia, try the work of Annbjorg Lien or many of the varied releases from the NorthSide label.

LOTR soundtracks are timeless classics of art that make you feel like you are in the actual movies.You feel relaxed, and comftorable-as courageous as Sam(we all know that Sam was the REAL hero), as strong as Aragorn, as powerful as Gandalf, and as cute as Legolas(noone is cuter than him,accept for Gimli,lol!)
Never the less, the LOTR soundtracks are bound to move you over and over again!

From the opening "Foundations of Stone" to the plaintive Gollum's Song, these hauntingly beautiful sounds evoke intense emotions and sriking visuals of the film. There is the majestic, pristine alpine vistas which opens "The Two Tower." The Carmina Burana-like chorus which accompanies the slow, flaming decent of the Balrog in that monsterous underground cavern. The themes for Edoras and the Riders of Rohan flow like a distant call to honor and glory, and recall the wide windy plains and sun-kissed mountains that surround the Golden Hall up on it's lonely rocky mount. And the ethereal tones of "Evenstar" stike home the lament of the elves in losing Middle Earth and their Evenstar, Arwen, to a mortal doom.

*sigh* I just love it. Of all three LotR soundtracks, I love it best. Of all soundtracks I've heard, I love it best.

So, Howard Shore still gives us his best talents as a composer. I actually bought the soundtrack CD of the Two Towers before I watched the movie, and was able to depict few scenes in my mind according to the themes, which spoke for the contents of the movie! The soundtrack has a variety of themes, including vocals.

This time Shore reminds up of the previous theme in the Fellowship of the Ring (Foundation of the stone) when Gandalf falls in the shadow, and defeats the Balrog with a braveheart & comes back to the fellowship at the turn of the tide.

Shore then makes a transition into the City of Rohan, which has a unique music background. At the same time he tells us through his music about the fear Frodo & Sam have while passing through the marshes. Meanwhile Arwen does not want to leave her beloved human Aragorn because she believes in him. The vocals in the theme of (Evenstar performed by Isabel Bayrakdarian) will touch you and make you feel of Arwen's inner conflict esp. with her father. (The Leave taking) is also sensitive and shows the sadness of Arwen to leave Aragorn behind to the Undying Land.

After Aragorn falls from the edge of the hill, a new vocalist (Sheila Chandra in the Breath of Life theme) comes to play, representing Arwen who promised to support him. He's now saved, and is going to Rohan to fight along with Men & the Elves.

The battle themes (Hornburg, Isengard Unleashed, Forth Earlingas) were vital, and reflect the intensity of the unfair battle between thousands of Uruk-Hai and few hundreds of Men & Elves, who show the bravery in fighting. Now the great role of the Treebeards comes to play when they decide to fight along (the mid part of Isengard Unleashed theme- featuring Elizabeth Fraser & Ben Del Maestro).

We can sense how brave Samwise is from the theme (Samwise the brave), and how his support to Frodo was crucial. However, Gollum still suffers from his psyche conflicts, and that was added to the soundtrack in a separate sad song (Gollum's Song- performed by Emiliana Torrini).

An awesome bonus to the soundtrack was (Farewell To Lorien- featuring Hilary Summers), this is so calming theme and it gives hope as well!

I heard from my friend another theme called (Requiem Overture) which is part of the Trailer. It's gorgeous but was not included in the soundtrack CD.

All these music and vocals make u feel that u r part of the story.

What can I say? Thanks Mr. Shore for being borne!
