3 out of 5 stars Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24

For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.

5 out of 5 stars We really enjoyed hearing all of the old movie themes.......2005-09-30

we put this CD in on a long road trip. We played a guessing game as to which one knew the movie. The music was excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Film Music.......2005-09-10

This is an outstanding collection of film music. The sound is qulity is very good. The selections cover a good range from various film genres and time periods. I like this CD.

4 out of 5 stars An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 1.......2005-08-22

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' interpretation of film scores on this first tribute to Hollywood is somewhat a mixed bag. A SUMMER PLACE was beautifully executed and true to the nature of this sensitive film that was made during a time of innocence. The BEN HUR, CAPTAIN BLOOD and OUT OF AFRICA selections were good. The interpretation of GOLDFINGER was a rather bizarre and blatantly bombastic exercise in overkill. This is a good CD for me because of the A SUMMER PLACE selection.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic collection of movie music.......2001-02-13

Erich Kunzel and The Cincinnati Pops never fail to disappoint. This is a rousing stirring collection of overtures and themes from some of Hollywood's biggest films. And what better piece to start off the album than the "20th Century Fox Fanfare". A lot, if not all, of these pieces will be familiar to movie lovers. Who can resist the beautiful "Love Theme from Romeo & Juliet" or the "Theme from Love Story". Then there's the heart pumping "Theme from Jaws" and the "Theme from Rocky". This is a terrific album, and belongs, not just in a music fans collection, but also a movie lovers.

4 out of 5 stars Ben Hur Soundtrack.......2007-04-05

Just be aware that this is, indeed, the WHOLE soundtrack from Ben Hur, every piece of music played during the entire movie, not just the familiar orchestrations. I have the original vinyl and wanted the same on CD. This is not it. It is the original orchestrations but with all the inbetween tracks it makes it very hard to sample or just listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Ben-Hur - A Tale of the Christ: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack ( 1959 Version ).......2006-03-26

The accompanying book about the movie and the soundtrack is an excellent and detailed description - complete with pictures, and the soundtrack itself is superb in its drama, themes, and quality. I highly recommend this wonderful and timeless soundtrack.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Unsurpassed Film-Score Music!.......2005-12-04

This dual CD set unambiguously deserves many more stars than just a puny five! I have heard none finer. And only a few CDs of equal quality. The legendary Miklos Rozsa is the film's composer. This is the inaugural release of Rozsa's complete score for the 1959 film BEN HUR (BH). The CDs contain 88 tracks in the same order as in the composer's original score. By "complete," I mean there is more music here than there was actually in the film. This is because the CDs include unedited cues and music from film outtakes plus one alternative track. The vast majority of tracks were recorded on the M-G-M sound stage with sizable orchestras of up to 75 performers. The result is sound of intense richness, but not to the point where ensembles over whelmed individual instruments (of which there were quite a few "unusual" ones). Not surprisingly, Rozsa won an Academy Award for BH (his third). While you can debate which of Rozsa's score is his best (my personal favorite is his music for the 1947 film THE RED HOUSE), there is no debate over the undisputed fact that ALL his 90 or so film composition are simply (or very close to) magnificent. The CD booklet is over-the-top outstanding, and easily the most extensive ever created. More of a book than a booklet, it's authors, Marilee Bradford (Ms. Bradford is also produced the CD set) and the late Tony Thomas, have provided us with a definitive source of reference. Rozsa was probably the only composer of his time who could create the score for BH. This CD set is probably the only recording of our time that demands to be in your collection.

William Flanigan, Ph.D.

4 out of 5 stars This is good but..........2005-11-27

...you still need the 1991 Sony double-cd Ben Hur soundtrack (now out of print) if you want the two original, 1950's vinyl lp's on cd.

I bought the 1991 Sony two-cd set years ago and have loved it ever since. I recently bought the 1996 Turner set and what disappoints me is that some music from the soundtrack lp's seems to be missing; e.g., the Prologue by the Frankenland State Symphony Orchestra. There are other differences as well.

5 out of 5 stars Better than the First Volume.......2005-08-04

There is a great collection of music to be found here. There are many great renditions. The "2001, a Space Odyssey Fanfare" was outstanding. "Book of Days" from "Far and Away" had a very unique approach. I recommend this one deeply, oh yes I do, by far and away!

5 out of 5 stars An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 2.......2005-06-17

Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' treatment of film scores on this second tribute to Hollywood are somewhat more pleasing than Volume I. The selections are more intriguing and demonstrate a more positive approach to film scores and their value as true musical art forms. There is quite a diverse representation of music here. The incredibly powerful main title to MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY (Bronislaw Kaper) juxtaposed with the bittersweet and romantic love theme to SPARTACUS (Alex North) and the intimately tender love theme to FRIENDLY PERSUASION (Dimitri Tiomkin) are masterfully achieved. I have never been that enamored with this CD's 20-bit digital recording but it has grown on me. Still, I highly recommend and enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Sheila from Savannah, Georgia.......2005-01-15

I love this cd. It is the greatest. Moonglow and Midnight Cowboy are my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars A great album.......2001-01-28

Erich Kunzel, once again comes through with another terrific album of movie music. On this album you will find preludes, themes and main title music from some of Hollywood's most loved movies. Films from as early as 1936's "Modern Times", through to 1992's "Far and Away", are represented here. The Cincinnati Pops Orchestra are as wonderful as ever, and the 20-bit digital sound system makes for unequalled sound quality. A pleasing highlight for me, is the wonderful "Moonglow" which starts off track 5. The jazz trio of piano, bass and drums eventually is joined by the orchestra for the theme from "Picnic". Then we have the beautiful waltz from "Around the world in eighty days". With the wonderful accordion solo, you can imagine being on a merry-go-round. This is truly a beautiful album...a must for lovers of orcestral music.

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT EPIC FILM MUSIC.......2007-04-11

ROZSA'S MUSIC THRILLED ME AS A CHILD AND IT STILL DOES NOW. A MUST FOR ANY LOVER OF FILM SCORES.

5 out of 5 stars Rozsa's Best Work.......2007-01-11

Miklos Rozsa composed some impressive scores. These are among his best. These recordings and selections are outstanding. Mother's Love from BEN-HUR is very emotional. The Spellbound: Concerto is also included.

4 out of 5 stars A good start for those who are getting acquainted with Rozsa.......2004-06-15

This CD contains some of Miklos Rozsa's finest film scores, but the pieces are abbrieviated (some of them are only up to 5 minutes in length). Nevertheless, they are still good. My biggest problem with the album was there was not enough pieces from QUO VADIS (my personal favorite). Other than that, the CD is a fine start for those of us (like me) who are getting acquianted with this excellent composer.

4 out of 5 stars Film score fans will enjoy this.......2007-07-07

You probably know if you'll enjoy this before buying it since you've probably heard these selections before or heard short suites of the films on other Rozsa CDs. If none of that applies, this new 2-CD set constitutes about 40 minutes' music each from a pair of religious epics, "Quo Vadis" (1950) and "Ben Hur" (1957), with the composer conducting all the music that accompanied the films.

There are 12 selections from each film score; the music from each film is alloted one CD. Considering they could have gotten the entire thing onto one SACD or, by marginally increasing the speed of the recordings, onto one standard CD, this becomes something of an expensive proposition for barely more than 80 minutes of music.

Still, it is the original scores for the two movies, making these definitive recordings. Dutton Laboratories took the original London Phase 4 tapes and remastered them for these CDs. I did not notice much difference in terms of fidelity from the selections of "Ben Hur" and "Quo Vadis" I heard on Angel's "Film Scores of Miklos Rozsa" CD. The main advantage is completion, meaning the vocal scores with wordless choruses are also included.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus and the National Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus do the playing and singing. Alan Hamer of the Miklos Rozsa Society gives you five pages of notes on the production, Rozsa, and the scores. They give newcomers information about why this composer wrote such wonderful film scores during the golden age of religious epics on the big screen. The back page also includes a visual advertisement for other film scores available from Vocalion. All in all, fans of Rozsa won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14

WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15

This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.

The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!

Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!

Good film music should be seen and not heard--that is, it's usually there for background, to reinforce what you're seeing, not to draw attention to itself. So why listen to it? Often that's a mystery, but the items in this collection seem to have been selected because they are interesting music (Prokofiev, Copland, Bernstein) or because they are so familiar that they bring back memories of favorite movies (Laura, High Noon, Star Wars). Like much movie music, a lot of these items are sentimental and overblown, even the more famous ones. (Those famous screaming strings in Psycho can sound silly without the onscreen action.) But if you want one movie-music CD in your collection, this may be the one to have. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for "Conquest" alone.......2005-09-12

The stirring martial music from the movie "Captain from Castille" ("Conquest") is on this album and so far as I know it's the only CD you'll find it on. But other tracks are great also, including the "Parade of the Charioteers" from "Ben Hur," the theme from "The Magnificent Seven," and "The Imperial March" from Star Wars.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT COMPILATION!.......2005-06-05

I've come to appreciate soundtracks more and more. This compilation progresses chronologically through 60 years of film music, starting with 1939's "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood", and ending with "Titanic". It encompasses a huge range of styles. Along with the usual suspects - music from "Ben-Hur", "The Magnificent 7", "Star Wars", et al, there are a few real sleepers, like John Barry's medieval-flavored theme to "The Lion in Winter", or Leonard Roseman's lyrical "East of Eden". Blessedly, most of the tracks are original recordings, conducted by the composers, among them Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. Only those of us burned by tinny, tacky, sacriligiously rearranged retreads on obscure labels can appreciate this.

There are a few notable omissions. The prolific Randy Newman isn't represented, though Uncle Alfred is. And NO Ennio Morricone? - incredible! Presumably, this has more to do with Sony's current copyrights and contracts than the relative merits of the composers. And it's fine to have John Williams included twice, but why two pieces from "Star Wars"? Why not the theme from "Jaws", for instance? Or "Sugarland Express", for a really unexpected treat? But these are minor quibbles. And for whatever it's lacking, there's no fluff substituted. This is real music from fine craftsmen, which sometimes attains art. A great intro to the form, and wonderful just to listen to. I bought it used - one of my best deals ever!

3 out of 5 stars So So Compilation.......2002-01-14

My major interest in this CD was in the selection entitled "Robin Hood And His Merry Men" (duration: 4 min, 28 sec), conducted by John Williams, and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. It turns out that this is a re-issue of the track from Sony Classical SK 62788, 1997. Surprisingly, this performance is poky, ponderous, and prodding. The conducting is, well, somnambulistic. Miking/mixing/processing yields a sonic brick deficient in instrumental nuances while sounding like way too many musicians were shoe horned into the recording studio. As for the rest of the tracks, it's hard to believe, but Silva America offers better compilations! Best to skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves more than five stars.......2000-06-23

I have several discs of film music, and this one if by far the best. As one of the previous reviewers noted, there are many peices absent that could have been included here, but I don't see how anyone could be completely satisfied with any compilation that fit on just one disc.

The performances here are crisp and clear, and include a good selection of both old and new, ranging from traditional film favorites like the Star Wars theme, to less common selections like the screeching strings from Psycho (at least, I think they're less common, but I could be wrong). And I could listen to the Magnificent Seven theme over and over.

Anyway, this is a great disc for almost anyone. If you're looking for one thing in particular, find that film's soundtrack, but otherwise, this is a fantastic disc, and one of my favorites!

4 out of 5 stars Music In Film (NPR Milestones of the Millennium.......2000-05-02

Great CD;the music is crystal clear with an excellent variety demonstrating the wide variety of musical talents in Hollywood. Liner notes are also most interesting, explaining some of the history behind the cuts and pointing out differences in the composers styles...as with John Barry. His style ranges from "the Lion in Winter" bold dramatic soundtrack to the exquisitley tender "Dances with Wolves" theme music. A CD to enjoy over and over

5 out of 5 stars An outstanding CD of Miklos Rozsa film music.......2005-09-28

This CD is the real deal, the authentic music from Rozsa's movie scores delivered by an unnamed orchestra with the composer at the helm. The first half is recorded in stereo and recorded in Los Angeles in 1962. The back half is in excellent mono and recorded in Europe in 1952.

While many listeners have heard the Roman marches from "Ben Hur" and "Quo Vadis" as well as the music from "Spellbound" by watching the films themselves, I would draw your attention to the outstanding music herein from "El Cid" and "The Red House", two movies I have never seen.

The three selections from "El Cid" -- Overture, Love Theme and the outstanding El Cid March -- comprise an organic entity boiling over in Spanish flavor. The four selections from "The Red House" -- Prelude, Screams In The Night, The Oxhead Woods and the very disturbing Retribution -- do even more to create an atmospheric thriller in good mono right there on your home or car stereo! The addition of a wobbly female voice in "Screams of the Night" section adds suspense and aura to this already highly effective thriller coming from your equipment.

I'd say this music has to be heard in its entirety to be believed. It eschews the common failings of film music and in effect creates a suite from each movie that rivals, even betters, well known classical music suites. These are impassioned, thrilling, highly fulfilling performances that must be considered authoritative given the leadership of the composer.

The one small drawback to this issue are the scanty two page notes about Rozsa and his role in Hollywood. Still, it is the music you want to hear and the music on this CD is glorious beyond glory. On the evidence of this issue, there is no question Rozsa ranks up there with Bernard Herrmann as the best writers for film in the 20th century.

4 out of 5 stars Discover Rozsa's Great Film Scores.......2002-01-18

When film lovers talk about classic film scores, they normally speak of Hermann, Waxman, Steiner, and a few others. It's too bad Rozsa's name is not mentioned more, because he was truly one of the greatest composers of film music. Rozsa was a master of creating excitement and tension in his scores, even if excitement and tension were lacking in the films themselves! I have never seen 'The Red House,' but I'd see it in a minute after hearing the soundtrack represented here. A nice look at a forgotten film great and his music.

4 out of 5 stars Rozsa's Brilliant Score to Epic Films.......2000-06-29

The scores on this CD are beautiful and grand, matching the expanse of the movies they were ment to score. Written in the Golden Age of Film Scores which helped inspire modern film score composers such as John Williams.
