Eh, It's Okay.......2007-04-24
For those that purchase soundtrack collages to have a variety of songs and themes, then this is good for you. Unfortunately, these tracks didn't have the signature Erich Kunzel version of the songs as he had on other soundtrack mix CDs. It was more like just that, a mix CD of different soundtracks and scores. However, it was a good buy in the fact that the tracks chosen had excellent sound quality and a sense of harmony.
We really enjoyed hearing all of the old movie themes.......2005-09-30
we put this CD in on a long road trip. We played a guessing game as to which one knew the movie. The music was excellent.
Outstanding Film Music.......2005-09-10
This is an outstanding collection of film music. The sound is qulity is very good. The selections cover a good range from various film genres and time periods. I like this CD.
An Interesting and Gratifying Volume 1.......2005-08-22
Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops' interpretation of film scores on this first tribute to Hollywood is somewhat a mixed bag. A SUMMER PLACE was beautifully executed and true to the nature of this sensitive film that was made during a time of innocence. The BEN HUR, CAPTAIN BLOOD and OUT OF AFRICA selections were good. The interpretation of GOLDFINGER was a rather bizarre and blatantly bombastic exercise in overkill. This is a good CD for me because of the A SUMMER PLACE selection.
Fantastic collection of movie music.......2001-02-13
Erich Kunzel and The Cincinnati Pops never fail to disappoint. This is a rousing stirring collection of overtures and themes from some of Hollywood's biggest films. And what better piece to start off the album than the "20th Century Fox Fanfare". A lot, if not all, of these pieces will be familiar to movie lovers. Who can resist the beautiful "Love Theme from Romeo & Juliet" or the "Theme from Love Story". Then there's the heart pumping "Theme from Jaws" and the "Theme from Rocky". This is a terrific album, and belongs, not just in a music fans collection, but also a movie lovers.

EPICS THAT DO NOT DISAPPOINT.......2007-05-14
WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA TO TAKE HOLLYWOOD'S COLLECTION OF HISTORICAL EPIC MOVIES, EXTRACT THE BEST PORTIONS OF THE SCORES AND COMBINE THEM FROM THE DAWN OF MAN TO THE RECENT PAST. I PARTICULARLY ENJOY THE SUITES FROM GLADIATOR, BRAVEHEART AND THE VIKING. THE REPRODUCTION OF THESE SCORES BY THE CITY OF PRAGUE PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA AND CHORUS IS BRILLIANT, AND THE RECORDING WAS EXCELLENT. I ONLY WISH THERE WERE EIGHT DISCS INSTEAD OF FOUR TO COVER THE VOLUMES OF SCORES THAT COULD NOT BE INCLUDED. LET'S HOPE FOR A VOLUME II.
Interesting selections . . ........2006-12-15
This compiiation album makes an excellent gift for that person wanting to discover great, epic scores. I'm surprised, however, that Vangelis' Alexander is included in this one. Not bad, just surprised.
The reason I give this album 4 out of 5 stars is because of the swashbuckler section. How is it that CutThroat Island - one of the greatest epics in history - was scrubbed out of the list? Pirates of the Caribbean is included on the selection but nothing from Debney's masterpiece?!
Yes, that is a huge compilant. If you haven't discovered CutThroat Island, I suggest you get it then you'll understand my frustration. Still, this album is a great buy and worth looking into!

Excellent Collection, Even Better Price.......2005-10-14
I picked this CD up as an afterthought while searching for some background music for a play I was putting together, and while it cost less than half of the other swashbuckler soundtrack CDs, it has more tracks than most, more variety than any(dramatic to romantic to action), and solid sound quality. If you're after a whole collection of the Korngold era tunes in one CD, this is it.
An Oldie Re-Issue, But Still A Goodie!.......2005-04-03
A re-issue of tracks from Marco Polo 8.223607, 1995. Practically perfect in every way. But the brass could be a bit more crisp and defined. Primarily an early work from master restoration magicians Messrs. John Morgan and William Stromberg. And now at "popular prices." Don't delay on this one!
William Flanigan, Ph.D.
Watch Out! This Music Will Raise Your Cholesterol!.......2005-03-16
And it will buckle your swash, too.
These performances appeared in 1995 on Naxos's full-price sister label, Marco Polo, and are among a spate of movie music scores making their appearances now at budget price. Some are wonderful - like Honegger's score for 'Les Misérables,' Georges Auric's 'Beauty and the Beast,' and Wojciech Kilar's 'Dracula.' Some don't stand up too well on their own, like Steiner's 'King Kong' or Waxman's 'Objective: Burma!'. But this one definitely has the best of the best, all in that late-romantic, richly scored music we associate with the genre. The producers have put together some of the best cues from four swashbucklers and from beginning to end this is music to enjoy, with no dead wood anywhere along the way.
The Main Title of Miklós Rosza's 'The King's Thief' is a heckuva lot better than the 1955 Edmund Purdom movie for which it was written. Victor Young's 'Scaramouche' is represented by nine cues, among them the delightful 'Main Title' and the faux-baroque 'Pavane.' The inventor of this sort of movie music, Erich Maria Korngold, is here represented by six cues from the 1935 Errol Flynn blockbuster, 'Captain Blood.' All five cues are terrific and sweep you along, but I particularly like 'Slaves--Arabella and Blood,' a seven-minute tone poem of great beauty and ingenuity. Max Steiner, a transplanted Viennese like Korngold, contributes six cues from 'The Three Musketeers,' also from 1935. The love theme is really gorgeous.
These scores were reconstructed by the late Christopher Palmer ('The King's Thief'), William Stromberg ('Scaramouche') and John Morgan ('Captain Blood' and 'The Three Musketeers') from conductor's piano scores; the full scores, like many of their era, were lost. In one case the score had only a violin line. The three arrangers attempted, then, to reproduce the orchestrations from the movie sound track itself, a difficult task at best, but it sounds to me like they did a marvelous job collectively. These orchestrations have the sweep and grandeur of the originals.
The Brandenburg Philharmonic Orchestra (Potsdam, Germany) is conducted by Richard Kaufman. They are beautifully played and recorded.
This one is worth having if you love the flamboyant style favored in adventure films; this is the crème de la crème.

Customer Reviews:
Good Previn Great Korngold.......2006-12-23
I was never too enamored with Andre Previn as a film composer or a conductor. However, I found this recording to be rather exhilarating. Previn gives Charles Gerhardt a run for his money with the performances here of Korngold's music. If you have seen the films the recordings take on a new life. I recently viewed "The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex" and I enjoy those selections even more.
MAGIC FORMULA.......2005-12-17
This disc provides four sets of selections from Korngold's legendary film scores. That suits me for one better than the scores in their entirety, and I like the way the production has been done, with each set of extracts played without intermissions (although there are separate tracks for the individual episodes). Korngold's film music is all about effect so far as I'm concerned, and enough of a good thing is enough, especially when the transitions between the separate extracts are arranged as skilfully and smoothly as they are here. Korngold's style fitted the epics of the 30's and 40's to perfection - it was his natural style, he didn't adapt that as William Alwyn did, and he didn't follow models but was the model himself, starting with Captain Blood in 1935. It was as if someone had invented a glove because he liked the shape of it, and found out that it was perfectly suited to being worn on the hand.
The liner-notes that come with the disc are admirable. Previn contributes a short and lucid introduction giving us his general view of Korngold and of film music. The majority of the material is from the authoritative source of Brendan G. Carroll, providing a more detailed commentary on the four film scores separately. These are given in the chronological order of the films, whereas the scores are not, in case anyone needs to know that. Previn suits me down to the ground as an interpreter of music like this. He had an exceptionally adept touch with scores that are thick-textured and lyrical, something I found many years ago in his Brahms readings, and which you will find in his recording of the German Requiem from 2000, one year prior to the present disc. The way he does it is just right for me, with plenty of body and fullness to it, but showing real mastery in keeping the texture clear at the same time. He and the LSO are long acquainted of course. Their relationship had its stormy episodes, but in my own opinion it was one of the most successful such partnerships in the entire 20th century. There is a sense of consistency here, which might seem unsurprising given that this is Korngold whose idiom is not exactly varied, but it does great credit to the various orchestrators, of whom I count five. Korngold simply was not given time to go through the hard slog of writing out his scores in full, but he knew the kind of sound he wanted and I would guess he supervised his assistants pretty closely.
The recording seems exemplary to me as well. It suits Korngold, it suits the LSO, it suits Previn's special approach. The packaging is a new kind that I was also given by DG for a set of Lutoslawski concertos. It is in soft board, with a fold-over cover forming an envelope containing the liner. Extracting the latter can be like coaxing an unwilling dog out of its kennel sometimes, but I have no objection to this new format. In my filing system this disc will be separated by only one other from my disc of Ketelbey, another composer for the masses during the same era. The two make an interesting contrast. Ketelbey wrote for the radio, specifically for the BBC Light Programme and was listened to by an audience of impoverished British housewives in pinnies as in the film Vera Drake, and by the husbands and sons of these in flat caps. Korngold sang of romantic adventure and - more to the point - of romantic opulence. Where I come from, and for my age-bracket, this is the music of escapism, and it is a pleasure to escape down memory lane again.
Suffocated in marzipan?.......2005-11-05
For anyone too young to remember, Charles Gerhardt single-handedly revived the movie scores of Korngold in the late Sixties with swashbuckling performances on RCA. Korngold wasn't just forgotten--he had been crushed by a famous review that said his serious music needed "less corn and more gold." Gerhardt worked dilligently to bring both serious and popcorn scores back into circulation.
This 2001 CD from Previn and the LSO is about ten shades less luxurious and shmaltzy than those earlier sets. Here Previn aims to keep the sweetness below the saccharine level. Is that even possible? I think he succeeds a lot of hte time, despite the loss of visceral excitement that goes along with it. One big dose of Korngold per lifetime is a great thrill; too much leads to insulin shock.
So, at this stage of life I welcome these less excitable readings (in gorgeous sound) and can enjoy them without feeling that someone is suffocating me in marzipan.
Great Music, but a Mediocre Performance.......2005-11-05
Korngold was indubitably one of the greatest film-score composers in the history of cinema if not the singularly greatest one. Both his innovations in the syntactical procedures involved in the production of film music and his highly individual expressiveness have seeped into the work of nearly all the composers in the genre in the generations since. What Korngold did for the art for which he is best remembered may be likened to what Monteverdi did for the opera or what Haydn did for the symphony. It was thus with great enthusiasm that I greeted the release of this album from the preeminent Andre Previn and the equally illustrious LSO.
While it is already granted that what is being played is both brilliantly constructed and enjoyable to listen to, I was disappointed in the playing itself, especially given the reputations of the players. In this recording, the LSO is uncharacteristically lethargic, and their sound is a bit on the bellowing, turgid side, lacking in an articulation adequate enough to highlight the many breathtaking orchestral details which are typical of Korngold's intricate style. I also find it disconcerting that this recording continues the trend of committing to disc only truncated suites of the scores. If we are ever to appreciate these great pieces of music, one must first play them in their entirety. Two-hour tone poems operatic in their scope cannot be done justice when they are turned into fleeting musical interludes.
Film Scores By Korngold.......2003-05-03
I have been collecting film scores for over fifty years. One
of Erich Wolfgang Korngold's great film scores is for the film
that made President Ronald Regan a major film star "King's Row"
with Claude Rains, Robert Cummings, Ann Sheridan, Charles Coburn
and a host of very fine film actors of the period - 1942. I have
often though that the film could be remade for a new, younger
audience, but no one could duplicate the outstanding film music
composed by Korngold, along with Max Steiner, and Sir Malcom
Arnold, a favourite of mine.

The Fantasy Album.......2007-05-09
You can't have too many Sci-Fi albums. This is a good addition to anyone's collection. A good crosssection of SF music. It even has music from The Thief of Bagdad from the 30s(?)
nice release from Silva.......2005-08-15
As with most of the recent Silva America releases, Silva Screen has compiled older recordings from previous CDs and added some new material exclusively for this release. In this case, Silva has recorded music from The first Harry Potter and Lord of The Rings films, both Mummy films and Gladiator. I'm not sure what else is new, but combine these excellent tracks with golden age material from Hermann and Rozsa, and some Elfman (Batman, Edward Scissorhands) and Williams (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Witches of Eastwick) for good measure, you have a heckuva compilation.
The performance is first rate with only the Raiders March being a subpar track.
Outstanding Fantasy Scores from Hit Fantasy Movies.......2003-04-05
If you're looking for some fantasy role-playing game backround music to play or just like mostly classical fantasy-esque music, this double CD contains excellent scores wrapped in whopping total of 140+ minutes worth of music.
Classic music from your favorite hit fantasy and action movies are found all over this huge, quality collection. You'll hear suites and sounds from outstanding films like Lord of the Rings, Gladiator, Willow, The Mummy, Harry Potter, Excalibur, Conan, Highlander, Batman, Edward Scissorhands and more.
A recent (2002) and impressive collection of musical scores, and by far the best CDs I've personally bought for fantasy themed music.
"successful formula from Silva spells Classic all the way".......2002-09-24
History repeats itself with this latest compilation from Silva Screen "Fantasy Album:Adventure & Fantasy at the Movies", a heap of music to digest within the twenty-eight tracks. All beautifully arranged and conducted by Paul Bateman and Nic Raine with the City Of Prague Orchestra in full force...with the helping hand of David Temple (choir master) of the Crouch End Festival Chorus. A perfect blend from brew master James Fitzpatrick(producer) who has impeccable foresight and taste in film music.
What I most enjoy about Silva, is the fact they always have the lesser recorded selections within the big picture...take for instance "THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD"(1958), "THE THREE WORLDS OF GULLIVER" (1960), "MYSTERIOUS ISLAND" (1961) and "JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS" (1963), all four composed by Bernard Herrmann who is in a class by himself, they'll never be another.
But for my money the highlight picks are "GLADITOR"(2000), Hans Zimmer's recreation of the spectacle that was Romes, with man against man, man against beast and the armies that clashed and fell under the powerful story that unfolds within this suite from the film ~ "BEETLEJUICE", "EDWARD SCISSORHANDS" and "BATMAN", each from the films of Tim Burton still ring true within the realm of great direction and storytelling, this can only be topped by composer Danny Elfman who adds the frosting to an appetizing treat ~ "LEGEND" (1985), can faeries, goblins, woodland spirits mix well with the Lord of Darkness...only the legendary Jerry Goldsmith can conjure up a tune to drive the entire cast into a frenzy with "FARIE DANCE/REUNITED", this is the stuff nightmares are made of with a happy ending of course.
With composers like Tan Dun, Randy Edelman, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, James Horner, Maurice Jarre, Michael Kamen, Brian May, Jerome Moross, Carl Orff, Basil Poledouris, Miklos Rozsa, Howard Shore, Alan Silvestri, John Williams and Hans Zimmer...one can only hope this will last forever. Silva, I don't know how you do it, but keep them coming...gotta love it!

Captain Howdy = Gooood..........2000-08-17
A truly odd band. Featuring Billy West (the voice of TV's Ren and Stimpy) on guitar, and Penn on vocals, this band has a fairly interesting sound. Produed by Kramer, an interesting musician in his own right, this album is definitely worth listening to.

Brilliance........2005-08-05
An album that desparately deserves to be put back in print, James "Blood" Ulmer's recording debut, "Tales from Captain Black", finds the guitarist stepping into his own as a leader. With mentor Ornette Coleman blowing alto and Coleman's son Denardo serving as drummer, it would be quite possible that this record would simply be a Coleman record under another man's name, but it's not. Working with bass wizard Jamaaladeen Tacuma, the string players manage to define the voice of the record.
The great addition to the concept of harmolodic music this record really exposes is tight interaction between rhythm section and melody. Tacuma solos underneath all of Ulmer's solos, and often both are soloing underneath Coleman's reedy alto. Underneath it all, Denardo maintains a rhythmic pulse while responding to and frequently quoting the rest of the musicians. This sort of collective improvisation has always been present in the best of Coleman's records, but with such a sympathetic group, it comes out cleanly. The other thing this group does is drag the music a bit further out of the jazz idiom-- it's clear that Ulmer and Tacuma come from a background more seeped in funk and soul jazz, because the blues tinge that infects Coleman's record (not necessarily a bad thing) is far deemphasized on this rcord.
A good example of this is "Nothing to Say"-- Ornette blows a sing-song melody line, Ulmer is seeped in deep South blues, Denardo is freely associating with them, and Tacuma sits in his own universe. But as disjoint as it sounds, the record thrives off this sort of tenuousness and tension.
But this is an album that's quite hard to find-- and at 33 minutes or so in length, its difficult to justify the expensive used market or import prices. Still, its one of the great lost albums in free jazz/funk, and is essential listening for fans of Ulmer or Coleman. Highly recommended.
Soul Guitar Thunder.......2000-01-14
James Ulmer is one of the finest guitar players in the jazz world. He was influenced by Hendrix, but developed his own style. On this album, he plays with Ornette Coleman. The guitar is hard driving and uncompromising. His closest cousin would be Sonny Sharrock. Also try Odyssey the Band on Knitting Factory.

A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.......2007-05-05
one of my favorite bands of all time. i think if you dont like them i wouldnt like you and you are a moron. Megalomania is my favorite song ever written, If you are an athiest punkrocker you will love that song and this band. They are a mixter of dash Uk82 with and dash of OI! Just a flat out great punkrock band. in the vien of Blitz, Partisans, Mau Maus.
EXCELLENT OI !/MELODIC 80'S HC PUNK.......2006-07-18
Of a very particular kind. This unique sounding collection features over an hour of the most original and fresh sounding 80's hardcore punk. Massive choruses in atypical non-oi, no-singalong fashion, a lead singer with a gravelly voice, powerful, highly skilled two-guitar arrangements with plenty of metally/rock'n roll solos and machine gun drumming, this collection of the self titled lp + a lot of 7 ''and demos covering the 82 - 98 ! period starts out in what reminds a little of Bad Religion but rapidly develops into a speedy melodic mayhem of unrelentless heaviness. The sound leaves a lot to be wished in the upper treble department but the music more than makes up for it. A CRIMINALLY underrated brit-punk band hailing from the early 80's.
Great British punk.......2005-12-20
Everything you need by The Blood (they became a marginal metal band shortly thereafter). In the same vein as Peter and the Test Tube Babies, these guys were true musicians without losing the manic punk sensibility. Fans of Machine Gun Etiquette Damned will especially love this.
get this record if you like UK punk!.......2005-07-28
This is one of the best UK oi/punk records and maybe the most underated. This album is simply brilliant. These guys knew what they were doing. Its fast, hardcore, and melodic at the same time. If you like oldschool british punk rock this album is a must have.
