Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15
As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".
Mediocre.......2006-05-17
The sound quality for this collection isn't much better than the samples offered by Amazon.
One Hundred Greatest TV Themes.......2005-08-06
I have watched almost all the shows that are on these 4 cd's. Many were made before I started watching TV. Most I've seen once or twice before.
Pretty close to original recordings.......2005-07-24
Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.
Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11
I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

Customer Reviews:
A very mixed musical bag . . ........2004-05-14
This recording is a primarily a collection of themes, and music from British television programs, from the 60's and early 70's. These are not the original recordings, but updated versions recorded presumably just for this compilation. Most of the music is performed by various orchestras, including those led by Laurie Johnson, Barry Gray and Tony Hatch. Being from TV, the pieces are mostly short, and are taken from various kinds of programs including comedies, dramas, and adventure/action type shows. There is great variety in the sounds you hear, and there really isn't an overall "theme" to this collection of themes. The rather detailed CD notes provide informative background and some vintage photos.
Music from programs that made it to America, like The Avengers, The Saint, or Danger Man/Secret Agent Man, may be familiar to American listeners, but unless you have been exposed to British television, much of this music will be unfamiliar. There are also some themes from American TV, like Perry Mason, The Fugitive, Peyton Place and Ben Casey, which may be recognizable.
Taken for what they are, some pieces are well done. For those who favor upbeat, action type themes, there is High Wire from Danger Man, the twangy Maigret's theme, and the themes from Riviera Police and Department S. The version of the theme from the Avengers, performed by original composer Laurie Main's orchestra, is stirring, as you would expect. The same cannot be said for the disappointing version of the theme from The Saint. There are a few vocal tracks as well, such as the rousing Stingray, sung by Gary Miller. Many pleasant and easy to listen to tunes such as Roy Budd's Mr. Rose, and the themes from M. Somerset Maughham and Dr. Findlay's Casebook can be found.
Though there will probably be something here for everyone, such a mixed musical bag makes a general recommendation most difficult. For most, the purchase of this set is very much a roll of the dice. If the track list does not look familiar, you might want to look elsewhere.

More 80's gold........2004-12-14
Following up directly on the heels of The Leisure Hive, DWATBRW: Volume 4 contains two previously unreleased scores: Meglos and Full Circle. Meglos is a mostly forgetable story featuring an alien cactus's plot to harness the energy of Ty, while Full Circle deals with a genetic puzzle between the races on a swamp plannet.
Meglos's score is a bit of a mixed bag considering two composers worked on it (the only time this ever happened in Doctor Who). Part One's music was written by Paddy Kingsland, whose most famous work up to that point was The Hitchiker's Guide to The Galaxy. Peter Howell takes over from Part Two on, but Howell's style (voltage control, punctured by rhythmic shifts) doesn't go very well with Kingsland's {accoustic, with leitmotifs).
Full Circle is purely the work of Kingsland and features all the trademarks of his work for the show. Melodic passages permeate the piece, giving it a dreamy fealing. Action pieces are rousing without being bombastic. The synthisizers are completely different (Oberheim OBX over Howell's beloved Yamaha)and add a more fluttery sound to music.
Terrific stuff, now let's get Earthshock out on cd!
You'll never hear music like this on TV again.......2002-07-26
This is exceptional music from an exceptional era in Dr. Who, Season 18. The most unusual stories, the best sets, the most spectacuar special fx(for Dr. Who), Tom Baker, the most original and unusual Dr. Who, and Romana, the most intelligent of compaignions to boot. And of course the futuristic music from this CD. Meglos is much like Leisure Hive(see reveiw), Futuristic. Full Circle has a more mysterious feel, much like State of Decay and Warrior's Gate(Hopefully will be released also!) With haunting and sometimes sinister melodies. like 'Mistfall' or 'The Giants Leave the Swamp' or 'Spiders 1&2'. 'Adric finds the TARDIS' is also very haunting.

The exploits of Ian Fleming's British super-agent James Bond have long since become the longest running film series in history, spanning 40 years and counting. Not the least of the cycle's charm has been its music, a body of work that encompasses pop clichés (the twangy guitar of Monty Norman's original "James Bond Theme") and elegant underscores alike. While this collection spans music from Dr. No to The World Is Not Enough, decades of various legal entanglements prevented it from becoming the ultimate Bond music anthology. This is more a credible simulation, a newly recorded collection of cues and suites (including music previously unreleased on the original soundtracks) performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Symphony Orchestra. With John Barry's lush, ever-evocative scores both forming the core and setting the tone (but also featuring the work of George Martin, David Arnold, Michael Kamen, Bill Conti, and Eric Serra), it's the most comprehensive--if not exactly authentic--collection of Bond music yet attempted. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
almost the perfect James Bond collection.......2005-07-20
this 4 CD box has most of the familiar James Bond compositions.
Still, some tunes are missing(from for instance Thunderball and For Your Eyes Only)and most of the time the attention is on the instrumental version of the title track which is a bit of a shame. And yet, there are too many great pieces on this collection to make it a failure.Alpine Drive,Dawn Raid at Fort Knox,On Her Majesty's Secret Service(every track),Miss Goodhead and so on.All great pieces that not only show the great talent of John Barry but also the great power of James Bond films.Cause when you hear the music, you see the scenes in front of you.
Very much a recommendation to all Bond and Barry fans although sometimes it focusses too much on title songs. The only solution is to buy all separate soundtracks.
Good Collection.......2005-02-24
Very nice packaging and good tracks from the Bond music library make this an anoutstanding item. "From Russia With Love" and "Diamonds Are Forever" contain beautiful and energetic renditions. The John Barry music is handled quite well. I didn't real care for the David Arnold selections. "The World Is Not Enough" was weak. Overall it is a good collection just the same.
Not excatly what I expected.......2003-04-10
I when I read some of the reviews of this I thought that this was a complete collection of all the originals of the Theme songs of every James Bond movie and remakes done by the Prague Philharmonic of some of the other songs in the various movies. After recieveing this ... I started to listen to it and found out that it was all done by the orchestra. The are very good, but to a point it is not the same thing as owning a disc will all the orignal songs on it. Overall, this good if all the you want is the orchestral versions of most of the songs in the movies or the suites out of some of the movies. To a point these don't compare to the orignals. Keep looking if you want a set with all the orignals songs in it.
The James Bond CD for the John Barry purist?.......2003-01-28
Let's cut to the chase. Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra do John Barry's work justice. 90% of this collection is as close as you can get to the original James Bond soundtracks. The other 10% lends itself to some artistic license with respect to the arrangements. Most notable is the main theme to Goldfinger. Also Nic slips in a few previously unreleased tracks. You will find these on the On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Golden Eye tracks. This CD boxed set is definitely made for the Bond soundtrack fan. The die hard John Barry "purist"/ traditionalist may find some of these tracks questionable at first, but after a few times Nic Raine's artistic license gives a fresh perspective to the familiar Bond/ Barry themes. The only reservation I have with this CD set is with some of selections that are performed. For instance, from Goldfinger, "Dawn Raid At Fort Knox" was a poor selection considering the selection available on that particular soundtrack. The most famous 007 soundtrack of all I dare say. Overall Nic hits the mark, and this CD set is a tribute to Barry's (as well as, George Martin's, Marvin Hamlish's, and Bill Conti's and David Arnold's) work. It's all here in one collection. I am a die-hard Bond soundtrack fan, and to the casual soundtrack fan I say this CD is set all you need to experience the Bond music legacy. To those who are hard core 007 soundtrack fans ...this is a FANTASTIC "addition" to your collection. This has to be the BEST (and probably the only) 007 "soundtrack" compilation. Whereas all the others feature the "main themes" from the Bond films as originally recorded, this one truly gives you the Bond experience.
Very enjoyable with most of the BOND music you'd want........2002-12-08
This is similar but more comprehensive than another BOND collection on one CD by the City of Prague Philharmonic. These are good renditions but clearly not the orginals. I must ask if the Prague Philharmonic does not own a harp? It is glaringly missing in the Goldfinger themes and i am sure on others. That harp is an exciting and beautiful touch to the wonderful GOLDFINGER theme and its absents is unfortuneatly very noticeable. Also some of the other themes can even sound muzaky if thats a word(elevator music)
It gets 3 solid stars good collection yet defineatly something is lacking.

"Silva Screen release of BBC...Doctor Who scores of past".......2001-12-06
There is a passion, an almost "cult" following for this character of more than thirty years on the BBC...our hero presented himself in a fashion we've never known before, traveling throughout universe and time in the TARDIS...who else could it be...think a minute--- the illustrious DOCTOR WHO.
Mark Ayres (our composer), does an outstanding job scoring three major stories, which I believe are a GREAT LISTEN ---take for instance this classic "THE GREATEST SHOW IN THE GALAXY", with over twenty-seven minutes of Robot attacks, Werewolf play, sacrifices and eavesdropping, events are in a mess - but never fear the good DOCTOR(Sylvester McCoy-the seventh Doctor) and Ace(Sophie Aldred) take on the bad guys and ancient Gods of Ragnarok, all is well---the next venture takes place in 1883 with "GHOST LIGHT", religion and theories of evolution transpire, but remember not to go down in the cellar---lastly, do you believe in curses, any curse would be terrible, but this one is doubly troublesome, we're faced with one of old "Viking Haemovores", could it be any worse, never fear our DOCTOR and Ace can handle the situation with ease, as long as the music holds out, and our favorite composer keeps on scoring ~ MARK AYRES.

A Rare Find; Must-have For Any True Fan.......1999-02-27
This is not music but a radio-style drama that was released originally on vinyl during the T Baker era. Briefly available on CD, if you are a fan of the show & can get this CD, do so. Stars Tom Baker as The Doctor & Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith. This is a fun listen even though it is a little corny & predictable as Sci-Fi goes.

Poor reissue of the 25th Anniversary album.......2007-05-05
Don't waste your money on this poor reissue of the Doctor Who 25th Anniversary album - the music has been mastered at the wrong speed [it plays far too slow] pitching the sound down over the entire album

If you're a Doctor Who fan, you'll probably want this..........1999-02-09
Ominous and scary at times and odd at others. Just like the episode. Proves that Mark knows what he's doing. Much more active than Mark's 'Greatest Show in the Galaxy' music, but I happen to prefer that one a bit more (personally). Maybe this one is a better buy since it is so much more active, but that's up to you. As a severe Doctor Who fan, I got it because I have to get them all. Maybe you do too.

The Greatest Doctor Who Score Ever? Maybe!.......2004-06-02
The Leisure Hive marks a turning point in Doctor Who music. From now until the Sylvester McCoy era, all music would be provided by the now legendary BBC Radiophonic Workshop. Peter Howell's score for TLH kicks off this new era with a bang. Voltage controlled synthesizers guide apregios to hights previously unattainable by Dudley Simpson's chamber orchestra. And the famous title theme has recieved a well deserved overhaul (the only good one I might add). This cd presents the Leisure Hive score in its entirety along with the appropriate opening and closing themes (these are the original recordings, not available on cd up until now). Some sound effects from the story along with Meglos and Full Circle are also included. One final surprise is an all new stereo remix of the original Derbyshire Doctor Who theme, which combines elements from the original album version and Hartnell recording. A must buy.
thier is synth music then thier is GOOD synth music.......2002-07-26
This Dr. Who music is by far the best of all Dr. Who music. Yes it is synthesized, but it is composed as a synth orcrastra rather than just a few slopped together instruments like most synth music today(and the Sly McCoy trash). This is every bit as good if not better than the classic DW music. It was done as classic music, only modernized by synth and then given a space-opra feel for the times. Paddy Kingsland and the other artists should be comended for their masterpeices. 1980-81 was the best of Dr. Who music!(Even if it was Muzak).
