Like its late-'90s spiritual soulmate Rushmore, director Alexander Payne's Election is a sharp, mature comedy of morals and character in high-school drag, pitting obsessive overachiever and student-body candidate Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon) against a multifrustrated teacher's (Matthew Broderick) best efforts to stop her. And like Rushmore, its smart, eclectic soundtrack eschews the tyranny of Top Fortydom for an eclectic mix of modern pop and a few suitably ironic chart chestnuts (Donovan's hippy-dippy "Jennifer Juniper"; the Commodores' "Three Times a Lady") that gratifyingly becomes an integral part of the film's ethos rather than a tacked-on marketing clause. Late-'90s pop of the jangly school (Taxiride's raga-rock inflected "Get Set," Hurricane #1's "Rising Sign") mixes with subtle, country nods (Mandy Barnett's "If You'll Be the Teacher," "Drown in Small Cowgirl Boots" by Jolene) and retro touches (The Damnations TX's "Born to Be with You," Patience & Prudence's chirpy faux-'50s "Gonna Get Along Without Ya Now") to create a witty and effective musical backdrop to the backstabbing political metaphors. Rolfe Kent's equally piquant orchestral score, dominated by Randy Newman-esque string and woodwind arrangements that are by turns playful and longing, is represented by a concise suite of cues. --Jerry McCulley

2 out of 5 stars The answer to a reviewer's question.......2006-05-11

The reviewer, "allouciksk" asked what is the song that is the "'tribal' war cry song thingy" you hear in the movie but not on the Election soundtrack. That song is "Navajo Joe" by Ennio Morricone. The movie starred Burt Reynolds. Ennio Morricone is famous as the composer of the spaghetti westerns soundtracks which starred Clint Eastwood. "Navajo Joe" is on many of Morricone's compilations.

2 out of 5 stars HELP ME.......2001-08-27

In the movie reese gets really mad when she sees the other guy starting to run for the first time and in the backround music there is this "Tribal" war cry song thingie... WHAT IS IT... I CANT FIND IT ANYWHERE>.. SOMEONE HELP MEEEEE!

3 out of 5 stars Big Oversight.......2000-04-13

Nice selection of songs, but why could they not have included the screaming Spaghetti Western theme by Ennio Morricone, originally from the film 'Navajo Joe', that plays whenever Tracy flips out? As a big Spaghetti Western fan, this amusing use of Morricone's music made Election a great film for me.

2 out of 5 stars What, no score?.......2000-04-13

The score for ELECTION is excellent, and it is bewildering to me that there is so little of it here. Just one track of about 7 minutes. The song choice is reasonable, but the CD is woefully inadequate for those of us who really want to revisit Rolfe Kent's great and strange music from the film. having said that, 7 minutes is better than nothing, and the suite of score is really good.

5 out of 5 stars Great!!.......1999-05-17

Although it's not listed, there is a song on this soundtrack by Martin's Dam. It is called "Only God Knows" (check out their cd Sky Above for a sample) It's a great song on a great soundtrack of a great movie!!!! It is a must to check it out.
