Keyboardist Herbie Hancock's remarkable career took a surprising turn with this funk album--one of the first jazz albums to be certified gold. Hancock's already-storied career had included an extended tenure with Miles Davis as a member of both the classic quintet of the '60s and the trumpeter's groundbreaking electric dates. As a leader, the pianist had followed a similar course, cutting both outstanding acoustic dates (Maiden Voyage, Empyrean Isles) and experimental electric sessions (Sextant, Crossings).

Head Hunters, however, was something different: a stripped-down date featuring reedman Bennie Maupin as the only horn player, and a funk-oriented rhythm section made up of Paul Jackson, Harvey Mason, and Bill Summers. Hancock traded in his sophisticated piano performances and complex compositions for simple melodies, slow-burn funk grooves, and light electric keyboard splashes. The results, particularly on the tracks "Chameleon" and "Watermelon Man," had a profound impact on other musicians, although critics charged Hancock with playing to the galleries. But the album has stood the test of time--something neither the wealth of Hancock's imitators nor his own subsequent albums in this vein have been able to do. --Fred Goodman

3 out of 5 stars Funk Brilliance.......2007-07-12

I love Herbie Hancock's jazz material, so I tend to like the 60s Hancock, the Miles period, his work with VSOP, and some of his more recent material which I feel is a return to form.

Funk is not up there on my favourites, but its not a personal hate either. As far as an example of classic 70s funk jazz then this album has got to be a defining moment, along with Herbie's related work, Thrust.

Not much else to add, I'm sure Funk lovers will give this one a higher rating. Its a fun purchase to have, a little dated to my ear, but an important piece of its time. Many good moments on it to be had, and if you dig funk more than me than this should be a great album for you.

Hard to recommend, yet hard not to either

5 out of 5 stars MR. HANDS TOOK HEADS ON A RIDE WITH THIS!.......2007-04-05

After the lackluster reception he recived from Sextant, Mr. Hands regrouped, formed a new group and recorded this monster of a fusion album. By '73, Herbie was a afterthought. His predecessors failed to meet commercial expectations and his fanbase was dwindling down to the "die hard". "Headhunters" was to Mr. Hands what "Some Girls" was to the Stones in 78' and "Mama Said Knock you Out" was to LL Cool J in 90'. It was a tour de force that restored his commercial success and placed him back in the public conscious.

Headhunters is one of those albums that rose Herbie to legendary status in the jazz world and "Chameleon" is the prime reason to purchase the album. The track is driven by one of the most infectious basslines in r&b history and never lets up as they include some of the trippy sound bites and solos that can be found on Sextant. The only difference this time around is that its more balanced out with the main groove- giving it a universal presence that all music lovers can get into.

There's no need for me to explain the genius behind "Watermelon Man" since there's nothing I can say about that track that hasn't been said before. Unless someone mentioned the fact that the groove been used in countless hip hop songs( comes to show the amount of orginality hip hop producers have. Ha Ha!)

An underrated gem on this album that deserves recognition is "Sly". The groove starts off slow and gradually progresses to this facinating hybrid of a hard "Shaft" like wah wah groove and an africanized precussive back drop substaining the groove. Im my opinion, this is Mr. hands best piano performance on the album as his soloing is every bit as colorful and furious as the groove. Beenie Maupin dish out his sax chops like its nobody's business and comes close to stealing the show from Herbie. "Sly" is pure fire.

The album closes out appropriately with "Vien Melter". It doesn't raise the temperature like the other three tracks, but after the fast and furious funk on "Sly", its a welcome cooldown after the throwdown.

There you have it, Headhunters from the words of another reviewer who love it to death. Don't take my word for it. Put Headhunters in and let it go to your Head!

5 out of 5 stars A Good Concept.......2007-02-24

In the time that this was released, Herbie had struck jazz gold in the release of this landmark album. He took Miles' far out funk stew, dumbed it down, threw in some catchy hooks, and took some great solos to create this 70's masterpiece.

This laid the groundwork for jazz, funk, smooth jazz, jazz pop, and even some rock records to come decades later.

Some of it regresses into Miles' endless riffing Fusion stylings, but when this group finds the pocket, it is DEEP.

A great record and worth the buy.

5 out of 5 stars To The Head Of The Class.......2007-02-02

It was all about Sly Stone.

Herbie Hancock - in a December 1996 essay included in the liner notes to Head Hunters - writes, "I started thinking about Sly Stone and how much I loved his music and how funky 'Thank You For Letting Me Be Myself' is. I was hearing that song over and over again."

From that inspiration from one artist to another came this jazz-funk classic. Clean production, ample room for Bennie Maupin (reeds), Harvey Mason (drums) and Bill Summers (percussion) to stretch their solos, with bassist Paul Jackson pushing the rhythm and Hancock pulling down unique electronic sounds in the Fall 1973 recording sessions that produced this extraordinary album.

Hancock is nothing less than superb on the classic Chameleon and Sly, the band's tribute to Sly Stone. The studio tricks on Chameleon are a special treat. Vein Melter covers a more jazzy terrain, while Watermelon Man produces some hot work from Mason and Summers.

The 1970s brought a revolution of musical vision, with Head Hunters near the top of the pack in busting down the finite walls of sound and delivering infinite possibilities through a new generation of musicians who had jazz in their hearts and funk running through their veins.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-01-23

A lot of people seem to be complaining that this is a tired non-jazz, non-funk album. Maybe they are right. Maybe it's not straight forward jazz or funk. That doesn't mean it's not good music though. Maybe Herbie took out the jazz and took out the funk and made something completely new. There are certainly elements of jazz and funk throughout the album. Jazz is a broad category. This album fits because of the elements it contains. It contains nothing less than wonderful improvisation. The sax solo on Sly is one the best pieces of instrumentation I have ever heard. That's a big piece of jazz. I know it's also a big piece of rock music as well, but not the same way it's used here. I'll be honest, Sly and the Family Stone and Parliament are great funk musicians, but I'd take Headhunters over them any day. The music is deeper, more complex, and always offers up something new.

4 out of 5 stars Over all great score........2006-10-23

I've been a fan of Harry Gregson-Williams for quite some time (and to a lesser extent, John Powell). Gregson-Williams is known for working with Hans Zimmer (they worked together on the soundtrack for The Rock) and he is also known in the video gaming community for his work on the Metal Gear Solid franchise (his take on the theme, not originally composed by him, is absolutely breathtaking in both the second and third games).

So it was no shock to me that I absolutely adore his work on the Shrek franchise. I can't say much here that hasn't been said by other reviewers, but I will say that the strongest work on the soundtrack involves the more serious, epic pieces (of which there are far too few).

Stand out tracks, for me, are "Fairytale", "Escape the Dragon", "Ride the Dragon", "I Object", and "Transformation/End".

The action theme of the film is used perfectly throughout the film, but it shows up far too rarely on the disc. I'm not sure if it's actually present less, or if it was a less-is-more kind of thing when it did play in the film. Regardless, it's a beautiful composition (though it does remind me of the "hero" theme from Deep Blue Sea).

You can feel Gregson-Williams' influence on "Escape the Dragon", as there are similar pulsing electric beats that are reminiscent, to me, of his arrangement of the Metal Gear Solid 2 main theme (which to this day remains one of my favorite pieces of soundtrack music ever - it's exciting, it's patriotic, it's epic. What more does one need?)

There's also some beautiful solo guitar work on this score that's a bit reminiscent of Trevor Rabin, but excellent regardless. My only gripe is that the disc feels a bit short in running length, but I think that's because a portion of the soundtrack was dedicated to pop and rock tracks, which show up on the second album.

If you're a fan of Gregson-Williams, Powell, or just film music in general, I strongly recommend picking this disc up. It'll make you sad and it'll get your blood racing.

5 out of 5 stars Completely surprising.......2006-05-24

Harry Gregson-Williams is a fairly new composer, but despite that, he is beyond comparison. (Except for John Williams and Howard Shore and Hans Zimmer). This is supposed to be an animated film, where music doesn't matter AS much. But this composer goes beyond all expectations, putting forth all his best efforts, bringing out the best in Shrek. You can hear some links from this CD to the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, Harry's later work. Even by listening to the samples you can tell this music is hard to beat. I don't think Shrek would have won Best Animated Film if Gregson-Williams had not composed the music. BUY THIS CD!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best animated film music ever!.......2004-03-19

Although the other reviewers are right in that there isnt a lot of music on this disc, a little over 40 minutes, it's worth the price just for the first and 25th tracks. There are so many awe inspiring tracks on this cd it's impossible to pass up. The disc opens up with a very serious and magical theme on the strings and oboe. This theme is the same one that the princess sings in her fatal duet with the bird, that track is on here too. Also, there's the memorable Welcome to Duloc theme with the child choir. Also, the fight with Robin Hood theme with some riverdance in it is on this disc. The best theme on the disc is first introduced in the escape from the dragon track, with a funky beat behind it. It's presented in it's full orchestra and choral glory in the Ride the Dragon track which is guaranteed to give you goose bumps. All in all this is a very wide ranging score with some of the most light-hearted/goofy music ever along with some of the most inspired and passionate heroic music. I can't recommend this soundtrack enough. The music of Harry Gregson-Williams and John Powell added so much to Shrek, making it the best animated film I've ever seen.

5 out of 5 stars I'm so glad to have it!.......2003-01-12

I'm so glad I got this score. Such a humorous film like Shrek doesn't sound like it would have so much beautiful music, but this score proves it does. The music is absolutely stunning, sometimes powerful, sometimes scary, sometimes sad and sometimes just beautiful. There are a few recurring themes, but they are great themes and sound nice in every song. Although most of the soundtrack is pretty serious, there are a few funny songs placed in, which only add to it's greatness. If, while watching Shrek, you happened to notice some of the nice themes like I did, then I suggest getting this score. It really is a great CD and I'm happy to have this part of my collection.

3 out of 5 stars didn't get enough time???.......2002-12-21

This is the third score that Harry Gregson Williams and John Powell composed together and after buying "Antz" and "Chicken Run" I had high expectations. Unfortunately this score is by far not as good as their previous ones. Still good though, but especially less comfortable to listen to. Most songs are just too short. By the time the theme had captured you the song is over. Strongest part of this album is the humor Powell and Williams have used. Some endings of songs are quite "unusual", like "farquaad's speech" and "merry men", which can crack me up if I'm in a funny mood. Strongest tracks on the album are "escape from the dragon" and "fairytale". The rest of the album kinda sounds as if the composers didn't get enough time to compose the music, so they just put the pieces they already had behind each other. Too bad, because this is a duo that has a lot to offer and hopefully they will soon again, with less, but much longer tracks.

    4 out of 5 stars Essential EP.......2007-04-21

Angra's 2002 Hunters and Prey EP reminds me a lot of their Freedom Call EP. Both were released just after career-defining albums (Rebirth and Holy Land, respectively), feature a cover song, and include acoustic versions of Angra songs, and both are absolutely worth owning.

The first four tracks on Hunters and Prey are new songs, and all have the same feel as the band's powerhouse album Rebirth. I loved Rebirth from the very start, and these songs are just as strong as anything you'd find on that album. The songs "Live and Learn" and "Eyes of Christ" are powerful rockers, "Bleeding Heart" is a ballad, and the title track is an upbeat rock song with a strong Brazilian flair.

Next are two acoustic versions of songs from Rebirth - "Heroes of Sand" and the title track. These are interesting enough versions of the songs, but they tend to slow down the pace of this EP a bit too much.

Also included is a cover of the Phil Collins-era Genesis tune "Mama". This one is all about vocalist Edu Falaschi, who gives a powerful emotional rendition of the song.

Closing out the EP is "Caca e Cacador", the Portuguese language version of "Hunters and Prey". This version obviously strengthens the Brazilian feel of the song, and further reinforces the fact that Angra is not just your average prog/power metal band.

There are plenty of reasons to buy this EP. It's definitely a must-have EP for fans of the Rebirth-era Angra lineup, but older Angra fans will also find plenty to enjoy here, as will most fans of the progressive and/or power metal genres.

    5 out of 5 stars Great EP.......2004-01-10

Angra does a great job in remixing their songs and giving us some new things to taste as well. The new song in portuguse is a very nice touch... and the multimedia stuff on the cd is very nice too... overall VERY good and worth the price! Buy it if you like remixes and a small taste of a few new songs.

An excelent choice for thats who wants real music, dont lost your self too much into the tons of alt. rock an nu metal that the radio ant TV show and alway sound the same, thats ok but Angra is a diferent and strong/melodic rock music that you must have, just wonderfull, I love all their albums... (sorry about my english)

4 out of 5 stars Excellent mini-album! 4 new songs and other goodies.......2002-12-26

The new version of Angra, featuring Edu Falaschi, decided to capatalize on the momentum of their triumphant rebirth with the 2002 release of the "Hunters and Prey" mini-album. This features 4 new songs, 2 acoustic "Rebirth" songs, a Genesis cover and a Portuguese version of one of the new songs.

The 4 new songs are all excellent and up to the sky-high quality of the "Rebirth" album. These songs have a similar sound and style to "Rebirth" as well, and complement the album very well. "Live And Learn" opens the mini-album with fast riffs and memorable guitar solos. Kiko and Rafael are two of metal's most talented guitarists, and their chops are in display all over this mini-album.

The next song is the absolutely stunning ballad "Bleeding Heart". This sounds like something that could easily be all over radio, only much better (and we all know radio wouldn't touch something this good). Edu Falaschi puts in a very emotional vocal performance, and the lyrics are poetry. This has one of those choruses that just lifts your soul to new heights and stays in your head all day.

The title track, "Hunters and Prey" follows. This seems to be a rather "happy" song with a lot of Brazilian flavor. There's plenty of Brazilian percussion that really adds to the beauty of the song. The song is very lush with extremely catchy melodies by singer Edu. The guitar soloing is technically dazzling and fits within the song perfectly. This is the highlight of this mini-album and among my favorite Angra songs.

The final new song is "Eyes of Christ". This is a mid-tempo track featuring some fine basswork during the verses. Edu has a bit more edge in his voice on this song.

The next two tracks are acoustic versions of "Rebirth" and "Heroes of Sand" from the "Rebirth" album. These versions are ok, but are truncated from the originals. They are pleasant and feature re-done vocal parts by Edu, but I think they could have done more with these. I also don't like the fact that these are about half as long as the original versions.

Then follows a suprise... a cover of the Genesis song "Mama"! This is one of the best cover songs I have ever heard, I was totally suprised at the quality of this song. It has very sparse instrumentation that swells to a powerful cresendo towards the end. The real highlight of this song is Edu Falaschi's vocal performance. He sounds utterly amazing and totally convincing. He really vamps all over the place on this song. Stunning.

"Caca E Cacador" is a Portuguese version of "Hunters and Prey".

There are some multimedia elements on this disc as well. A video of "Rebirth", which I was actually disappointed in, because it is the shortened version of "Rebirth", cutting out the great solos. The picture galleries are entertaining though.

This is a great item to satisfy the appetite for the rabid Angra fan!

Few bands have come to single-handedly rule a genre as well as Stereolab. The only question remaining is which genre. The band's machine-funky grooves, oddball synthetic washes, and disturbingly flat vocals suggest a futuristic disco where the survivors of nuclear war have settled for alienation anthems that recall the "space-age bachelor pad" music of the distant innocent past. But this is all conjecture. No one knows what the music of the future will sound like. (Heck, we once thought by the year 2000 we'd all be walking around in Lost in Space outfits.) Stereolab, however, are certainly what we think of.

Microbe Hunters is both compact and expansive: only seven cuts but taken over 40 minutes. It begins with the lengthy Can-inspired instrumental "Outer Bongolia," which uses a circular rhythm and hook to layer the special effects. "Intervals" is the ballad form delivered in icy female tones to rob it of all sentiment. "Retrograde Mirror Form" ends things with a trippy tape loop. Beginners should start with Emperor Tomato Ketchup as Microbe Hunters works best as an addition to the Stereolab catalog and not as an introduction. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars BEST THING S"LAB EVER DID: spacelab lullaby lounge music.......2004-03-18

perhaps greater songs scattered thruOUT there cosmosii but this is too perfect...especially songs 2-thru-6: the nuclear core of this incredible ep. too many bad reviews of this, too many crusty old lab fans (i WAS one)...but this slicks out past the future and the present...ya know, i think the best song ever done is certainly from COBRA: permutations........but this is the ep that interfaces with IT and makes the whole gel slide whole and edgy and groovy without nary a hipster in the room. if you are a hipster, you will painfully atomize. "become one...hold your thoughts to the Present".........ETC.

5 out of 5 stars blah blah blah..........2003-08-27

i read above somewhere that this is more of an addition to a stereolab collection rather than an introduction. i, however, stumbled upon this album with no previous knowledge of stereolab and fell in love. but i guess everyone is entitled...

5 out of 5 stars One of the Groop's best.......2003-08-12

I should begin by saying that I've been a huge Stereolab fan since 1992; I own nearly all of their releases (with the exception of some of the vinyl-only releases).

The funny thing is, I usually don't care that much for a new Stereolab release the first few listens. They reinvent themselves a bit on each release, so I suppose I need a few listens to get "oriented." First of the Microbe Hunters was no exception. I didn't get into much at first, but it's become one of my favorites. About half of the tracks on this would be candidates for a personal best-of compilation ("Household Names" would be a shoo-in).

Is this the best CD to start with if you're new to Stereolab? Probably not. Go for Mars Audiac Quintet or Emporer Tomato Ketchup.

    4 out of 5 stars Awwww...poor little stereolab fans.......2003-04-08

I have listened to a lot of moaning about this CD. "...Not as inspired," "...not a progression," "...the same album as (fill-in-the-blank with any recent stereolab release here.)"

I have enjoyed stereolab in all of their many sound-guises and found their musicality peerless.

"Barock-Plastik" is one of the great funk grooves of our time. And "Household Names" would be the lead-off track if I made a Stereolab best-of mix.

After seeing stereolab live (touring for this EP and "Cobra Phases") with sonic youth a couple summers ago, THIS is the CD of theirs that I most often put in my stereo. Detractors should be ignored. Let your ears be the judge.

    5 out of 5 stars A Nice Little EP........2001-11-03

A nice EP from Stereolab to keep us pacified till Sound Dust. I like how it begins with a nice cocktail instrumental. The EP is a nice collection of songs, granted it's not their best work, but it is far from their worst.

If you loved "Emperor Tomato Ketcup," then you will certainly like this fourty minute EP from Stereolab. It's a really atmospheric release.

If you need loud, insane, honest, raucous, demented, therapeutic music to cathart too, this is the ticket.

If you're into early Nick Cave, Birthday Party, Foetus, Bauhaus, Einsteurzende Neubauten, or anything else quite punky, offbeat, heavy, dark and twisted (Mr Bungle, Butthole Surfers etc.) well this is right up there if not far better and more twisted. A true classic album.

Hunters & Collectors are one of those bands whose awesome, crazy, uncompromising, innovative early work, has been obscured by their later, often mediocre, commercial pop-rock hits.

4 out of 5 stars Much Better Than Recieved.......2006-06-20

There's no denying Hunters and Collectors were in top form on 86's "Human Frailty". It was a positively smashing dose of fine Aussie rock and roll. I found that the consensus about their 89 release "Ghost Nation" was that it was an uninspired, weak effort. I couldn't be happier to report that this is completely untrue. "Ghost Nation" is a very good album.

While not the rocking powerhouse "Human Frailty" was, H+C took a much different path and found a wonderfully altered sound for this entry (and you gotta respect them for making it work). You'll find a lot of slower, country-influenced numbers here, but H+C fans don't fear: they are actually good. Songs like the cynical, cautionary "When the River Runs Dry", the wonderful "Blind Eye" and "Crime of Passion" show these guys have harnessed their knack for sweet melodies and sharp, sometimes satirical, lyrical bite and kept it in tact while refining their sound. The real album stealer here is the heartwrenching "You Stole My Thunder", a ballad that feels like a welcome reply to their masterpiece "Throw Your Arms Around Me".

"Ghost Nation" is a fun, poignant album for H+C that exemplifies the wonder in a band who can successfully reinvent their sound.

        5 out of 5 stars Show Stealers.......1998-11-16

Caught Hunters & Collectors in Dallas as the openers for Midnight Oil in '92. I was impressed as much if not more with the show and sounds they put on as the Oils. A great sound from start to finish. Well worth the time to experience a lesser known band from The Land Down Under!

5 out of 5 stars A favorite for ten years now.......1998-09-23

I agree with the other review: Ghost Nation is a great album. When I bought it nearly ten years ago, Hunters and Collectors were distributed in the US; sadly, after this album that was no longer true. No idea why: this band rocks. They have a bit of a "bar band" or "football fan" rep in Australia, apparently, and I can see why: they play straight-ahead, no-nonsense rock and roll. But it's smart, emotionally-aware, conscious, and fairly politically progressive stuff at the same time. It's also a real kick to hear a band that integrates horns, guitars, and keyboards so seamlessly. You have to go back twenty years or more to Chicago for that, but without Chicago's slide into Adult Contemporary hell. If anything H&C sound a bit like what Blood, Sweat, and Tears might have been if they had been a punk band. Or Mighty Mighty Bosstones with more melody and social consciousness, but no less muscle.

4 out of 5 stars Solid LP by one of Austrailia's best bands.......1998-06-28

"Ghost Nation" is a very strong entry into H & C's collected works. Those unfamiliar with the band may recall hearing the single "When the River Runs Dry" back in 1989 on college/alternative radio. In short, on the "Ghost Nation" CD, Hunters and Collectors write tight, thoughtful songs about a issues ranging from poverty ("Turn a Blind Eye") to drug addiction (the gorgeous "You Stole My Thunder"). Their sound is difficult to pigenhole, but there are few rock bands with a larger, more driving/rhythmic sound than the Hunters. The horn section they employ is an added bonus. Lead singer Mark Seymour (brother to Crowded House bassist Nick Seymour) has a distinctive voice honed to roaring perfection on the Austrailian pub circuit, and he's an equally gifted lyricist. Check out any CD by Hunters and Collectors, particularly their new "farewell" release, "Juggernaut." For a good sampling of their work, try "Collected," a best of compilation available on IRS records in the US. Enjoy!
