Elton John doesn't seem like a natural choice to write for a Disney musical, but he rose to the task on The Lion King, transcending his usual penchant for the softest of soft rock. Sir Elton's collaboration with Tim Rice (former writing partner of Andrew Lloyd Webber) helps connect the soundtrack to the theatrical lineage of all Disney musicals--so much so that, like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King was eventually adapted for Broadway. Undistinguished songs like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" are far outnumbered by stirring, stately tunes that lent the film so much of its sense of pageant and play. --John Sanchez

4 out of 5 stars fun but flawed.......2007-05-07

in 1994, the lion king came out and broke records. the film itself took in an astounding 312 million dollars in the us. that makes it the highest grossing hand-drawn animated feature EVER (an accomplishment that will never be toppled since niether disney nor dreamworks is producing hand drawn features any more). that year at the oscars it also won two awards for the musical score and best original song (three of its songs were nominated0. so how does the music really stand up compared to other disney features.

first off there's hans zimmer's score. his score is both powerful and moving. it brilliantly incorperates elements of local african music (provided and arranged by lebo m) these elements give it a great feeling of belonging not only to the film but to it's setting. without these tribal elements the score would have been far less compeling. one small problem is when the score abandons these elementsl; they're not carried through in all of the music. but its not enough to be a real distraction. the power of the score allows the listener to feel the wildabeast charging or smell the rain falling during the monsoon or experience the brilliance of the circle of life.

SCORE 5 out of 5

the songs had music by elton john and lyrics by tim rice. the following is a song-by-song breakdown.

THE CIRCLE OF LIFE - this is a great opening number with powerful vocals provided by carmen twillie and impressive african-inspired vocals in the beggining by lebo m. with the actual film, this is not only a moving but inspiring piece of cinema. even without, this is a great song that still gives me goose-bumps. this definately warranted its oscar nomination
5 out of 5

I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO BE KING - this is a really fun song by simba and nala along with zazu. its infectious beat and lyrics definately leave u humming. this may not be the most memorable song, but it definately captures the youth and innocence of simba at this point
5 out of 5

BE PREPARED - this is scar's big number so to speak. it features the hyenas in a very dark yet memorable song. the rhaspy vocals and wonderful musical arrangements make this a great piece that is both eery and impressive.
5 out of 5

HAKUNA MATATA - this is the second oscar nominated song, and although its fun buddy type number, it does get old and doesnt really age as well as the rest. this is honostly one of the weakest songs, believe it or not, its good but just cant really hold up to the other stronger pieces.
4 out of 5

CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT - here it is, 1994's oscar winner for best original song. honostly i feel that the circle of life deserved that award, but here's the song that got it. the film's version is very romantic, especially for featuring a couple of lions, timon and pumba's parts are funny, but it is simba and nala's portion that takes it home. btw elton john's version at the end is a definate winner.
5 out of 5

SONGS OVERALL - 5 out of 5

so if the score gets 5 and the songs get 5, why does the album only get 4? the answer's pretty simple. for the first time since 1989 with the little mermaid, two composers helped on this film. one provided the film's score and one provided the music for the songs. because two composers worked on this, it feels a little incohesive at times. this isn't really noticible within the film but on the soundtrack it definately stands out. elton john and hans zimmer both did a great job and the only really saving factor are the african rhythms that they both used. although this is a great soundtrack, that lack of unity does bring it down.

despite that minor flaw, this is a must-own for any disney fan or music fan in general. this is a great soundtrack that ranks right up there with beauty and the beast and must never be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Perfect.......2007-04-09

This is hands down one of the best Disney soundtracks ever! Elton John came up with some killer tunes here! The opening song always give me goosebumps!

4 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2007-03-31

This album is great, but I can't seem to find the part where simba and scar fight at the end. i was thinking it would be on "King of Pride Rock" but its not... so i'm a little disapointed in that. (thats one of my favorite scenes for some reason) other than that, i love the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, if only for the instrumentals.......2007-02-14

The songs with lyrics are cute and memorable, but the strength of this album is in the last four songs. Listen to "This Land" and it instantly transports you back to the scene with Simba and Mufasa laying under the stars, and then to the scene where Simba sees Mufasa in the clouds. Listen to "...To Die For" and you feel an intense claustrophobia as you relive Mufasa's last moments and Simba's discovery of his father. Listen to Under The Stars and you can practically hear Simba screaming, "You said you'd always be there for me!" And when King Of Pride Rock comes along, you can feel your heart swell as you see Simba take his place on Pride Rock. The instrumentals are incredible works of art that never fail to draw intense emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Soundtrack.......2006-11-16

I'm writing this review not of the release of this Special Edition, but of the music contained within. Disney's release and re-release of products is nothing new. It's one of the reasons that Disney is so strong in the market today. With that said, I have to admit that this is one of the best Disney soundtracks that has ever been cut to a disc. I never owned the original release of this music, so I'm glad that Disney did decide to re-release the original work with a few extras as part of the "The Lion King: Special Edition" release. Everything on here is wonderful, and the score itself was key to the development of the story. Selections such as "King Of Pride Rock" and "To Die For" encompass the emotional ups and downs of this film. Elton John's music is also wonderful on this disc. His most notable offerings are "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "Circle of Life." His only downfall is "I Just Can't Wait To Be King," which should have been left to the youngster who performed Simba's singing voice. It comes acrossed as forced by Elton John as he performs it.

The "extras" for this Special Edition include a mild and unnecessary remix of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "The Morning Report," which is included on the Special Edition DVD release. Neither add to the collection, but it is nice to have "The Morning Report" on the disc.

Overall, this is one of Disney's strongest soundtracks. In my personal list, I rank it in second place behind Phil Collins' wonderfully tribal "Tarzan" soundtrack. If you don't already have the "Lion King" soundtrack, I highly suggest that you purchase this special edition copy if you are a true fan of the film or of Disney soundtracks in general.

Highly recommended.

Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age is the sequel to Itzhak Perlman's popular album of movie themes performed with soundtrack composer John Williams. Unlike its predecessor, this disc focuses on classic cinema themes and features the Boston Pops Orchestra, not the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The Laura theme, as well as Max Steiner's Now Voyager and Miklós Rózsa's Lost Weekend themes, sound lush and romantic in Perlman's lyrical hands. The traditional Irish jig "The Quiet Man" is the disc's most upbeat moment, while the unforgettable Gone with the Wind theme is its most memorable. These are timeless, dreamy compositions, though not necessarily the most uplifting. If you're looking for something cinematic to get your heart racing, check out Ricardo Chailly's recording of Shostakovich's film scores or even Leopold Stokowski's classic work on Fantasia. --Jason Verlinde

5 out of 5 stars Perlman, Williams reunite in wonderful Serenade sequel.......2003-12-04

With the success of Cinema Serenade, conductor John Williams and violinist Itzhak Perlman reunited to record another collection of classic movie themes. Performed this time by the Boston Pops Orchestra, the music of Cinema Serenade 2: The Golden Age harkens back to the days of stars such as Bette Davis, Humphrey Bogart, Errol Flynn, Ray Milland and Clark Gable.

The 12 selections include themes by Hollywood legends Max Steiner, Miklos Rozsa and Erich Wolfgang Korngold (whose son George would later produce several of composer/conductor Williams' scores for Varese Sarabande Records). Cinema Serenade 2 presents beautiful arrangements of Steiner's themes for Now, Voyager and Gone With The Wind, Korngold's love theme from The Adventures of Robin Hood, Charlie Chaplin's lovely Modern Times and "St Patrick's Day," a traditional Irish song from the John Wayne classic The Quiet Man.

Since I consider myself to be a charter member of The Rick Blaine Society of Rank Sentimentalists, I'd have to say my favorite tracks on this album are Herman Hupfeld's timeless "As Time Goes By" from 1942's Casablanca and Victor Young's "My Foolish Heart" (from the 1949 film of the same title). It was while I was listening to the radio (on the late WTMI 93.1 FM classical station) that the DJ played "As Time Goes By" and I discovered this recording of mostly lyrical themes; I listened to Perlman's haunting violin solos and the Boston Pops' bravura performance and nearly wept. I, of course, bought this CD the next day and it's now one of my favorites.

For fans of Itzhak Perlman, John Williams or film music in general, both of the Cinema Serenade CDs are a treasure trove of beautiful and memory-stirring themes.

5 out of 5 stars Some of the most beautiful music you'll ever hear.......2001-06-15

This is one of the most beautiful CDs I've ever heard. The selections are musically much richer than Cinema Serenade I. In particular, Sir William Walton's music from Henry V, Korngold's music from Robin Hood, and Newman's music from Wuthering Heights are standouts. The Korngold is my favorite, with several themes from the picture packed into a short love scene lifted straight from the movie. The arrangements on this album are stunningly lush, especially those by Williams. His opening chords from The Uninvited are terrific harmonically.

4 out of 5 stars Don't compare it to Cinema Serenade 1.......2000-01-24

Itzhak Perlman is still considered by me the best violinist alive today. His techiniques are so impressable and heartouching and nobody can contest that. The idea of this CD was wonderful, although the selections of the musics aren't so good than in Cinema Serenade 1. But anyway, if you want to listen musics that worldwide the people emotioned with, buy this CD, but don't fall in the temptation to compare it to the first one.

5 out of 5 stars I can't stop listening to this CD...........1999-10-03

All of those lush movie themes are greatly compiled on this CD. I especially liked Laura and Stella by Starlight. After listening to this, you will want to go out and buy/rent these great old movies!

This version of Maury Yeston's Nine is so finely wrought that it deservedly won the 2003 Tony for Best Revival. While not a blockbuster, the original 1982 production, staged by Tommy Tune, was a nice success and allowed Raul Julia to make a splash as the only man in an otherwise entirely feminine cast. Inspired by Fellini's film 8 1/2, Nine succeeds in creating a strong male lead while parcelling out great songs to several different women. The mere fact that Antonio Banderas doesn't get eaten alive by the power cast around him (Chita Rivera, Mary Stuart Masterson, Jane Krakowski, and Laura Benanti) testifies to his charisma; even better, his singing is surprisingly confident ("Only with You" is downright sweet). And leave it to the Broadway pros to shine like diamonds: Listen, in particular, as Jane Krakowski steals the show with her sassy delivery of "A Call from the Vatican." You may need a cold shower after that one. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Description

Winner of 5 Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, the show the New York Post hailed as "a true original" and The Daily News called "brilliant, daring, innovative and divine" returns in a spectacular new production. The new broadway cast recording includes Antonio Banderas with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston.

4 out of 5 stars As Good As The Original.......2006-07-26

I'll admit I wasn't a fan of the original, but this revival has won me over. And now I really like both cast albums.
The revival cast is just as good as the original, Banderas well cast as Guido. I prefer Chita Rivera over Lilliane Montevecchi on Follies Bergere,(could never understand what the hell she was singing!) And while Jane Krakowski is not exactly the (sadly) late Anita Morris, she is sexy in a different way and it works. I love Mary Stuart Masterson, who knew she was such a terrific singer?
The whole CD is beautifully done!

5 out of 5 stars My impressions of Nine.......2006-02-23

Good music; very good performances. Am now acquainted with other sides of these performers.

2 out of 5 stars The samples on this page are from the original.......2005-07-10

So I went to listen to some samples of the CD on Amazon before I bought it, and lo and behold, Amazon cheated a little and put the original Broadway cast album up for samples, not the revival. That is definitely Raul Julia singing, not Antonio Banderas. Amazon- get it together!

4 out of 5 stars Great Revival Cast!.......2005-06-11

The cast & orchestrations are incredible for the Tony-winning 2003 revival of "Nine", surpassing even the original 1982 production.

Best tracks include:

My Husband Makes Movies
A Call From The Vatican [Jane Krakowski's Tony-winning number]
Only With You [Antonio Banderas' version outshines Raul Julia's original]
Folies Bergeres [Chita Rivera's big song]
The Bells Of St. Sebastian [though the original is somewhat better]
Unusual Way [Banderas/Benanti's beautiful duet & best song of the show]
Simple
Be On Your Own [Mary Stuart Masterson's gut-wrenching song]

A truly beautiful score!

5 out of 5 stars A stellar version of "Nine".......2005-04-12

This revival recording of "Nine" is superb. I actually prefer it to the original Broadway recording and the London concert version (which are both fine). Maury Yeston's music and lyrics are among the best for any modern musical, and the cast here is ideal.

The performances are exemplary, from Antonio Banderas as womanizing film director Guido Contini and Mary Stuart Masterson as his long-suffering wife Luisa, to Laura Benanti, Jane Krakowski, and the rest. Their singing easily matches or surpasses the previous casts, and their acting on the whole is stronger. They just feel more assured to me. Banderas also sounds more feasibly Italian than previous Guidos, which is useful in terms of the character. For their part, the women put on fake accents, which has the potential to be a distraction, but here didn't bother me at all.

Highlights from the score and this album include Banderas's charismatic rendition of "Guido's Song," Krakowski's sexy "A Call from the Vatican," Benanti's almost impossibly-beautiful version of "Unusual Way," and Masterson's bitter and expertly acted "Be On Your Own." The orchestra here is smaller than previous versions, but this doesn't detract in any significant way. The strength of the music and the performances comes through just fine.

5 out of 5 stars Phantom of the Opera.......2007-04-07

If you are expecting a movie thriller like the old version of "Phantom of the Opera" starring Lon Chaney, you may be disappointed, but if you like classical music and opera, you will find this an excellent DVD. The staging and performers are very professional, and there are some interesting twists, and it is an opera. Consider, though, that it was written by Andrew Lloyd Weber, and that in itself should tell you it will be a great performance.

5 out of 5 stars stellar and inventive.......2005-08-15

Philip Glass gets a bad rap as a one-trick pony and this album is one of the best pieces of evidence that he isn't. True, this record sometimes employs Glass's strong minimalist roots and the familiar ascending/descending melodic lines repeated over and over again like some sort of avant-garde military marching band that are his staple. But most of it is very different, and these sections are usually short and shift rapidly, unlike the epic, 20-minute builds of "Koyaanisqatsi." At times it is ambient, at other times rousing and spirited. "The Anthem" (part two of which was used to great effect in "The Truman Show" along with selections from Glass's similar "Anima Mundi" score) manages to be both, and is powerfully symbolic of what "Powaqqatsi" ("life in transformation," if I recall the loosely translated definition of the word) is about. While this record runs a little long, it's brilliantly creative New Age classical and works both with the movie and on its own.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious.......2005-08-03

Powaqqatsi is my favorite of the the three qatsi films (although I haven't seen all of the last one in the trilogy).

This is also my favorite piece of music of the movies, and the best word I can think to describe is "glorious".

Philip Glass has created something enormous here. He plays with 2 or 3 themes and repeats them over and over again in different ways, yet the music never becomes dull. Listening to it on CD, it sounds even better than what I remember from the movie ...

5 out of 5 stars Minimalist worth a try.......2004-03-14

I was afraid of minimalist music at one time. In a nutshell, if you are looking to minimalist music, this is a safe way to start. While this wasn't my first minimalist CD, it is by far my favorite. Because it is a soundtrack, no song goes very long and each track is slightly different allowing you to be choosey with what tracks you want to listen to. Yet, this is still minimalist. For those of you who like intelligent composition, the reoccurring themes develop great intrigue in changing meters, different orchestration, and the use of rhythm to develop melody the trade mark of minimalist music. Everyone will like the beautiful native South American melodies intertwined into those of the Indian, African, and Chinese themes. This album is one of three in the "Qatsi trilogy", and while the others have their moments this is by far the best.

5 out of 5 stars Ignorance No Barrier.......2004-02-20

I frankly admit that I dont know anything about 20th Century serious composers-I mainly listen to jazz-but this album is astonishing. I have to admit that some of Glass' other works, like "The Photographer," don't excite me very much. But the music on this CD is wonderful. On the strength of this album and the other soundtracks for this trilogy I've been carefully buying other Glass CDs. If some customer stumbles on to this album and is intimidated or turned off by Glass' reputation as a "serious" composer, let me assure them that this is an album that almost anyone can sit down and listen to and enjoy. Don't let his reputation as a "classical" composer who works with orchestras prevent you from grabbing this incredible CD. You don't have to be a highbrow to listen to this

5 out of 5 stars Powerful music transcends the soundtrack..........2001-10-10

Aside from the moments of sheer bliss, there are moments of sorrow, moments of deep repose and moments of a connection with the world at large. It at first seems miminal and repetitive but it is so chock full of hypnotic ryhthms, it becomes more and more of an experience.

Not quite background, not quite foreground, it kind of seeps into you and remains, resonating within for quite a while after listening to it.

5 out of 5 stars The Face in the Misty Light.......2006-03-17

"I remember the weekend Laura died..."

With those haunting words one of the finest motion pictures ever made begins to unfold. But it is the lush and beautiful music of David Raksin playing from the moment the camera pans to Laura's portrait that set the tone for this film classic. It is one of the most easily recognizable scores in the history of motion pictures. Perhaps never before had a score so embodied a film. The film itself and its score are so intertwined it is impossible to separate the two.

While not the complete score, this lovely suite is magnificent in and of itself. David Raksin wrote other very fine scores as well, however, and two of them are also given their due here. Film buffs cannot hear the music from "Forever Amber" without thinking of the young and breathtaking Linda Darnell. The music and the manner in which it is conducted is extraordinary.

The longest segment here, however, is from "The Bad and the Beautiful." It fit this film perfectly and while it does not contain that one haunting melody to remember, Raksin's music as a whole is stunning.

The liner notes contain some invaluable comments from Raksin himself regarding the story behind each film. Those who think they have heard the story of "Laura" may be surprised to know that one of the most famous scenes in the film would have been cut had the young composer not argued for its inclusion in the film. They will also learn that once Raksin began to play what would become one of the most beautiful and memorable scores ever composed, it was not inspired by sheet music, but rather the letter from his wife taking its place.

Every film buff will want to own this. The suites are beautiful and the comments from Raksin himself are priceless. David Raksin will always be remembered for "Laura." We will always see Gene Tierney when we hear it. Listening to this, however, will remind us of the genius behind that "face in the misty light."

5 out of 5 stars 3 Seriously Great Film Score Suites.......1998-02-10

David Raksin, now the senior living film composer of Hollywood's "Golden Age," prepared and conducted this recording in the late 1970s with the National Philharmonic at the height of interest in film music from the past. His selections are highly representative of the beauty, sophistication and brilliance of three of Hollywood's greatest film scores. Does anyone honestly not like "Laura"? Raksin virtually invented the theme-based score with this work and he provides a very generous suite. "The Bad and the Beautfiul" is one of Hollywood's most incisive looks at its ugly side and Raksin wrote one of the more complex, bittersweet themes composed for any film. It's a gorgeous performance. "Forever Amber" was one of the major best-sellers of the 1940s and Raksin was pegged to score 20th Century-Fox's "toned-down" production. This was the '40s version of "Valley of the Dolls" but on a more lavish -- and campier -- scale. Raksin delivered a full-bodied, lush orchestral masterwork. These three scores are among the most-admired ever written. For anyone interested in film music, this recording is as seminall as all of RCA's Charles Gerhardt/National Philharmonic recordings from the 70s. The CD reproduces the LP album's generous, insightful liner notes by the composer. For the more avid film music fan, the complete original soundtracks of "Laura" and "The Bad and the Beautful" are available on CD, and "Forever Amber" will be available by March 1998. END

Good film music should be seen and not heard--that is, it's usually there for background, to reinforce what you're seeing, not to draw attention to itself. So why listen to it? Often that's a mystery, but the items in this collection seem to have been selected because they are interesting music (Prokofiev, Copland, Bernstein) or because they are so familiar that they bring back memories of favorite movies (Laura, High Noon, Star Wars). Like much movie music, a lot of these items are sentimental and overblown, even the more famous ones. (Those famous screaming strings in Psycho can sound silly without the onscreen action.) But if you want one movie-music CD in your collection, this may be the one to have. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Worth it for "Conquest" alone.......2005-09-12

The stirring martial music from the movie "Captain from Castille" ("Conquest") is on this album and so far as I know it's the only CD you'll find it on. But other tracks are great also, including the "Parade of the Charioteers" from "Ben Hur," the theme from "The Magnificent Seven," and "The Imperial March" from Star Wars.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT COMPILATION!.......2005-06-05

I've come to appreciate soundtracks more and more. This compilation progresses chronologically through 60 years of film music, starting with 1939's "The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood", and ending with "Titanic". It encompasses a huge range of styles. Along with the usual suspects - music from "Ben-Hur", "The Magnificent 7", "Star Wars", et al, there are a few real sleepers, like John Barry's medieval-flavored theme to "The Lion in Winter", or Leonard Roseman's lyrical "East of Eden". Blessedly, most of the tracks are original recordings, conducted by the composers, among them Leonard Bernstein and Aaron Copland. Only those of us burned by tinny, tacky, sacriligiously rearranged retreads on obscure labels can appreciate this.

There are a few notable omissions. The prolific Randy Newman isn't represented, though Uncle Alfred is. And NO Ennio Morricone? - incredible! Presumably, this has more to do with Sony's current copyrights and contracts than the relative merits of the composers. And it's fine to have John Williams included twice, but why two pieces from "Star Wars"? Why not the theme from "Jaws", for instance? Or "Sugarland Express", for a really unexpected treat? But these are minor quibbles. And for whatever it's lacking, there's no fluff substituted. This is real music from fine craftsmen, which sometimes attains art. A great intro to the form, and wonderful just to listen to. I bought it used - one of my best deals ever!

3 out of 5 stars So So Compilation.......2002-01-14

My major interest in this CD was in the selection entitled "Robin Hood And His Merry Men" (duration: 4 min, 28 sec), conducted by John Williams, and performed by the London Symphony Orchestra. It turns out that this is a re-issue of the track from Sony Classical SK 62788, 1997. Surprisingly, this performance is poky, ponderous, and prodding. The conducting is, well, somnambulistic. Miking/mixing/processing yields a sonic brick deficient in instrumental nuances while sounding like way too many musicians were shoe horned into the recording studio. As for the rest of the tracks, it's hard to believe, but Silva America offers better compilations! Best to skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars Deserves more than five stars.......2000-06-23

I have several discs of film music, and this one if by far the best. As one of the previous reviewers noted, there are many peices absent that could have been included here, but I don't see how anyone could be completely satisfied with any compilation that fit on just one disc.

The performances here are crisp and clear, and include a good selection of both old and new, ranging from traditional film favorites like the Star Wars theme, to less common selections like the screeching strings from Psycho (at least, I think they're less common, but I could be wrong). And I could listen to the Magnificent Seven theme over and over.

Anyway, this is a great disc for almost anyone. If you're looking for one thing in particular, find that film's soundtrack, but otherwise, this is a fantastic disc, and one of my favorites!

4 out of 5 stars Music In Film (NPR Milestones of the Millennium.......2000-05-02

Great CD;the music is crystal clear with an excellent variety demonstrating the wide variety of musical talents in Hollywood. Liner notes are also most interesting, explaining some of the history behind the cuts and pointing out differences in the composers styles...as with John Barry. His style ranges from "the Lion in Winter" bold dramatic soundtrack to the exquisitley tender "Dances with Wolves" theme music. A CD to enjoy over and over

5 out of 5 stars More than just a good listen... it stir the soul! .......2007-05-31

Soon as you put the CD on, you are transported to another time... another place. The music sooths, as the words spoken by the beast penetrate to the deepest part of your soul. You're emotionally spent, yet feel more alive than ever after your journey.

I bought this years ago when it first came out on Cassette (gives you an idea how long ago that was) I listened to it so many times the tape wore out. I just ordered the CD.... I can't wait for the journey to begin again...thank you Vincent!

5 out of 5 stars I Loved this Show and this Album.......2006-06-09

I bought the CD today as a backup in case my original signed by Ron Perlman CD wears out. I keep waiting for the owners of this series to release at least the first 2 season on DVD. I have no interest in owning the 3rd season when the show broke my heart. I wish someone would redo this show in it's original conception as a movie or a TV series. I loved the show and was a great fan of the Love and Hope shown by Catherine and Vincent.

5 out of 5 stars Of Love And Hope.......2006-04-07

Hi! I bought "Of Love & Hope" last November, through Amazon.com, and I must say, I enjoy it! However; the producers of this album, which I love, should have used another introduction instead of just the MUSIC. Why not use the main theme, where Vincent and Catherine introduce each other? THAT would have been great!! After all, Cathy was also a great character on the show!

I hereby recommend this album to all Beauty and the Beast fans out there. I have listened to it so often, that now, I can recite more poems by heart! BATB FOREVER!

5 out of 5 stars Lushly Romantic!.......2005-09-04

I was a great fan of the TV series, "Beauty and the Beast" and owned the cassette version of "Of Love and Hope" in which Ron Purlman as Vincent reads poetry by Shakespeare, Lord Byron, Shelly, Rilke and other greats, interspersed with beautiful music, mostly from the soundtrack of the series. As I love beautiful music and beautiful words, I counted this tape among my treasures. When the tape eventually became damaged, I truly was distraught. I am delighted to now own the CD, which brought me instant pleasure which can only continue for the rest of my life.

5 out of 5 stars Moves me to tears..........2005-07-06

I actually have this on cassette, bought years ago before television network executives butchered this incredibly beautiful show, and dug it out of storage recently. Interestingly enough, I found that I had forgotten none of it. Never has music spoken so eloquently to my heart, nor represented a television show so clearly and wonderfully. Ron Perlman's "Vincent" voice, interpreting the classical literary selections in this, is sensual, articulate, undeniably romantic. It's one of the most unusual collections of music and poetry I've ever come across, a fitting and fine representation of the show.
My favorite is the opening theme of the series, with lyrics sung and "Vincent's" "No one, not even the rain, has such small hands" intonation.
The television show and it's tragic, other-worldly love story was too perfect to last long on tv. I'm glad that fans such as myself have been able to hold onto rememberances of the show such as this marvelous, sweeping score. I only wish that it could be re-released on Cd, along with dvds of the series. Fans have been keeping the magic alive all these years; it's time we were recognized.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Skip this CD.......2007-02-13

This CD seems to have gone out of its way to trnsfer the worst VHS tapes to CD Audio and package it as classic film scores. The short excerpts are very bad and fade out just as the tempo begins to build. If you love film noir, skip this CD. If you are interested in film noir, skip this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great soundtracks "from the original films!".......2006-08-06

I feel compelled to respond to some of the negative criticism below. This is not a collection of restored and re-recorded scores by a modern orchestra. These are the original soundtracks from the films themselves. Given that they are in mono and suffer from age, they cannot possibly be judged by the same criteria as a modern recording. BUT, as a collection of noir soundtracks, they are superb. It's a huge list of title tracks from great films noir. And, as many of these are unavailable as restored and re-recorded scores, it is a wonderful disc to have in your collection. If the only scores you like are high-fidelity, however, then this is definitely not for you. But this disc also can't be judged by those sonic standards. For those of you who desire to listen to some of this more obscure film music--just as it would sound playing the video on your TV--then this is a great disc to have.

4 out of 5 stars Good for fans.......2006-01-18

Given that there are very few Film Noir compilation soundtrack cd's available, I'd say this one works just fine for what it is. It's certainly not the most polished work, but it does have a lot of film scores and no fan should be without it. I'm glad I bought it.

2 out of 5 stars It's at today missing for me........2006-01-15

I am waiting this CD in my home. At today it's missing. Take note of this, please.

5 out of 5 stars Not For Audiophiles, But Wonderful for the Rest of Us!.......2006-01-13

I thought that this disc was quite possibly the best attempt so far at cataloging some of the best themes of the film-noir genre. It leaves out the dialogue snippets that break up the feel and mood of the music, and some of the selections are, quite simply, marvelous. Also, the compilers here were brave enough to include some of the rarer and seldom-mentioned noirs for inclusion here. If you're an audiophile, you must realize that these recordings are SIXTY YEARS OLD, for goodness sakes. I'll never understand why some people put so much stake in stereo sound and crystal clear remastering. I happen to feel that the gritty mono (which really isn't nearly as bad as has been suggested) heightens the hardbitten feel of these works. So, if you're someone who enjoys authentic film music, give this a shot! If you're expecting something butchered, repackaged, and changed around for modern tastes, don't bother with this collection!
