Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice first presented this theatrical masterpiece to the public in 1970. These are highlights performed by the 1992 Australian cast featuring John Farnham (Jesus), Kate Ceberano (Mary Magdalene), Jon Stevens (Judas), John Waters (Pontius Pilot) & Angry Anderson (Herod, though you may recognize him from his 'Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome' fame). Recorded in Sydney, Australia on August 4, 1992.

When you want your JC Superstar to kick butt, get this version!.......2006-03-09
Easily the most alive and exciting Jesus Christ Superstar ever. The music and vocals are absolutely astounding and both were updated in a completely fresh and non-offensive manner. My only regret is that there is not a complete version of this cast anywhere. We used this version as a temlpate for a production my Alma Matter put on 4 years ago. Order this disc if you are a fan of musicals, Jesus, or rock music in general.
I've not heard a better version yet..........2006-02-11
I went to see the production that this recording comes from in 1992, at the age of twelve. I still have the memory of King Herod's song with tap dancers in shimmering silver sequined mini dresses with bright green lights and strobes. I loved it so much that my parents bought me this CD. I still have it now, at the age of 25, and I'm still impressed with it. I've heard other versions of JCS and seen several performances both amateur and professional, and none come up to it's standard in my opinion. The performers involved, John Farnham, Kate Cebrano, Russell Morris, John Waters, et al may not be widely known outside of Australia, but they're very highly regarded here, and that's the rest of the world's loss. This is a highlights album, so it doesn't have everything from the show, notably missing is This Jesus Must Die, which has David Gould, as Caiaphas. He has the deepest voice I've ever heard and really makes his presence felt in Hosanna. Now I wouldn't necessarily proclaim this to be the definitive version, as I've not heard every version that's around, its certainly a very good version and well worth a listen.
This album makes me want to move to Australia.......2005-09-14
I saw a regional theatre performance of Jesus Christ Superstar the other night and was pretty impressed with the music and the fact that it's a real "rock opera" with screaming high notes and rock drums and guitars and everything. My friend had a few recordings of JCC so I decided to sample some of them. First I tried the original concept album which was a little hippie-ish for me and then I listened to the movie version which I wasn't terribly impressed with.
I then put in the Australian Cast Highlights album and was completely mesmerized from the first note on. The job they did re-orchestrating the score is nothing short of amazing. You can really hear the Australian influence in the songs. It has this celtic/aboriginal flavor to it which makes the whole recording sound primal and majestic.
I used to have this opinion that Australia was a little backward when it came to music, not to mention Andrew Lloyd Webber was overrated. This recording has completely changed my opinion on both. It sounds incredibly fresh, exciting and emotional and NEW despite the fact that JCC came out in the 70's and this album came out in 1992.
The leads are the best I've heard so far. Judas does have a little bit of "LOOK AT ME I'M A ROCK SINGER" syndrome but he's so impassioned and he sings rock so well that you're willing to overlook it....or I am anyway since apparently I would sever ties to my homeland to move down-under because of one recording.
I'm a singer, and Jesus is a little depressing to listen to because you know only a select few on earth are possesed of a voice like the one he has. Pretty damn flawless. I really don't think you'll find a musical theatre rock tenor like this guy. If he isn't at least quasi-famous there's something wrong with the music industry.
Mary's delivery is a little "clipped" at times but she's still the best I've heard. Haven't quite heard that perfect Mary yet but she comes very close.
But really, the "best" JCC recording just depends on one's personal tastes. Still I defy you to say this recording isn't at least one of the best.
This will change your opinion of Weber..........2005-08-13
I am not a big fan of Weber... however, i do love JCS. But the music always tinkered a bit on the cheesy side. Then WAY back in 1994 my roommate was sent this version and i fell in love. when she and i departed in 1996, i was sad that i had to seperate from the beloved cd. 9 years later, i still miss it and now am purchasing it. get it
get it.
get it!
A Fresh, new Superstar.......2005-05-28
I'm a huge fan of Jesus Christ Superstar, and I have heard many renditions, most of which have similar orchestrations with very few changes. Ever since the 2000 movie starring Glenn Carter came out, the shows that followed have gotten worse and worse because they were made to be just like Gale Edward's production (which sucked in my opinion).
And then I found this- the 92 Aussie Version. This was one of the greatest recordings of JCS ever. The orchestrations are updated; you can hear more 'rock' in it; the drums and electric gutiars are more audibal, and everything has a new feel to it. The only thing I have to critizie is that some of the songs (like Everything's Alright) have lost their dramatic edge. Instead of the orchestra swelling after Jesus says his bit, it just reverts to the same music that played through the whole song.
And the singers are stellar- John Farnham (Jesus) has a great rock voice. He doesn't rip off of other people who have played Jesus, making a new type entirly his own, which I haven't heard for a long time. Although he can make it up to the High G in Gethsemane, his shout of 'Why Should I Die?' worked just as well; to top it off, he added a soulful 'Why' after that. In some places I prefer Darryl Lovegrove, the man who succeeded John Farnham after the 92 tour, but overall I enjoyed Farnham's proformance.
John Stevens is also excellent as Judas. He has a lot of emoation in his voice (it also sounds very rockish). But, sadly he can't compare with the great Carl Anderson, or the amazing John English, the original Aussie Judas. He rips a lot off of Andersons proformance. But overall, John Stevens is great as Judas.
The women who performs Mary (I can't remember her name) does a fairly good job, although she doesn't have the range that Yvonne Eliman does.
I don't care what anyone says- Pontious Pilate is good.
Angry Anderson does an excellent job playing Herod- I love the new heavy-metal approach to the song; he doesn't amuse me very much like Mark Haldow did (from the New Zealand Cast that featured the same music), but I enjoyed it all the same.
Simon Zealots is the best I've heard in a while. He ditchs the insane Larry Marshall act (which was funny, but it did get annyoing), and the flamboyent Tony Vincet act (which sucked horribly).
Overall, I highly suggest this recording to JCS fans old and new.
Also, check out:
-The Motion Picture (1973) with Ted Neely, Carl Anderson Yvonnie Eliman, Barry Dennon and Bob Bingom- one of the best casts ever.
-New Zealand Cast (1994) with Darryl Lovegrove, Jay Lag^aia, Marget Urlich, Frankie Stevens and Mark Haldow- the cast that succeeded the Aussie 92 Cast, using the same orchestrations as this one.
-Original Cast Recording (1970) with Ian Gillian, Murray Head, Yvonnie Eliman, and Barry Dennon- the first and one of the best.
-The Original Broadyway Cast (1971) with Jeff Fenholt, Ben Vareen, Yvonnie Eliman, Bob Bingom, and Barry Dennon- although the orchestrations are sped up, this is a must-buy; the first ever staged production.

ABSOLUTELY GREAT!.......2007-02-06
I am not exactly a musical fan, but KRISTINA FRAN DUVEMALA has been sending shivers down my spine since I first listened to it some 5 years ago. Don't mind if you don't understand any Swedish, just buy this cd set, sit back and enjoy time and again. TIP: download a translation, this will make you enjoy KRISTINA even more. GREAT STORY, GREAT MUSIC, GREAT SINGING. And start reading the EMIGRANT NOVELS by Vilhelm Moberg on which this musical was based...
Ja! A pinnacle of musical achievement........2006-04-18
This is simply one of the greatest pieces of musical theatre ever written. I hate to compare it with Chess, which is also one of my favorites -- instead I'll say that the two musicals are quite complimentary and showcase different aspects of Benny & Bjorn's talents. Kristina's music is more operatic, serious, lush, and dramatic, with rock replaced to a large extent by folk and classical elements.
A nice thing about Kristina is getting to listen carefully to delicate, subtle touches in the music that aren't as easy to hear in music with a rock emphasis. Kristina is very driven by melody and gorgeous harmony (not to say Chess doesn't have amazing melody and harmony as well -- but think of Kristina as focusing most of its energy on the musical elements of songs like "You and I" in Chess.) Du Maste Finnas, the climactic moment of the show, is especially moving because it reverts back to a more classic Chess/ABBA sound that has been somehow fused with the more operatic character of the rest of the show. The key changes are quite surprising and the music is beautiful. When the chorus starts rocking, we are treated to a moment with an unmistakeable Benny Andersson piano figure that sounds just like the quick repeated chords in Dancing Queen or The Winner Takes it All -- so within this one song, we move gradually from a super-dramatic orchestral introduction to a brief ABBA moment and back to the operatic world. Somehow this works beautifully.
Kristina does leave one wanting more as a non-Swedish speaker. I hope an English production and cast album will appear to help cement the importance of this score in English-speaking countries. One can hope that perhaps Tim Rice will help out again on the translation. Kristina also impresses so much that I am impatient to hear what B&B come up with next!
Breathtaking.......2005-08-31
I have had this Musical on CD from the day of release, I do not speak a word of Swedish.
This is simply a Masterpiece, both with Music & Lyrics. I believe the Musical is coming to Broadway 2006/2007. With the english translation this will be huge. I can only say Mamma Mia is a Hit. So will this.

B&B's masterpiece.......2005-03-26
This is serious music, let me say this first of all.
Benny Anderson and Björn Ulvaeus addressed their considerable talents to compacting Vilhelm Moberg's tetralogy "The Emigrants" (a masterpiece as well) into a piece of musical theatre and have succeeded beyond credence.
It is an emotional work, to which some wonderful singers contribute. I shall mention Helen Sjöholm (Kristina) as representative of them all. Her "Du måsta finnas" is as moving as anything I have heard in music.
The compositional techniques used go across the entire range. There are anthems (of course: nobody can compose them like Benny), there are full-blown orchestral pieces, drums, organs, pianos, guitars are used.
And there is the utterly heart-rending conclusion "I Gott Bevar", which is simple and very pure, which I am listening to as I write and which again brings tears to my eyes and ever will.
It seems Kristina will be coming to America. May she arrive as pure as she is in this recording.
In my opinion, this is music of the highest order.
Charley
Great !.......2004-08-11
I don't understand a single word of Swedish but this music..is wonderful! In addition, Swedish lyrics gives it an "exotic" touch.
If you like musicals, or just music, you can't miss this.

I bought this thinking it was the entire show. It's missing some of my favorite songs, such as "Rainbow Tour." Elaine Paige is great, but I don't care much for David Essex as Che.
THE HIGHLIGHTS DISC OF THE ORIGINAL LONDON PRODUCTION.......2005-09-17
Over the years Andrew Lloyd Webber has made many musicals, some more successful and appealing to the public than the others. Most people will, however, agree that "Evita" remains one of his most satisfying works to this date. Numerous reasons confirm this statement. Just like in its predecessor "Jesus Christ Superstar", "Evita" is almost entirely sung-through; the lyrics are witty and appropriate; the subject matter is again a personality larger-than-life who rises from obscurity and dies at the peak of its fame, thus becoming a legend; the score is captivating and appealing to the listener, at home or in the theatre.
Following the suit of the Superstar, ALW and Tim Rice first published Evita as an album, which appeared in 1976. It was an instant success and soon afterwards the preparations began to put it on the stage. The veteran of the musical theatre direction, Hal Prince, accepted the offer to adapt the original album and Elaine Paige, then an unknown actress and musical theatre performer was cast in the role of Evita. The show premiered in London in 1978, winning acclaiming reviews and numerous awards. And yet, since the concept album was selling so well, the authors felt it unnecessary to release another full version of Evita, with the London cast. That is why we only have this highlights 53-minute recording of the original London production. The story of Evita is widely known, but for those who are new to this let's repeat the essentials: We follow the life story of Eva Duarte Peron, wife of post-World war two president of Argentina, Juan Peron. However, the musical is very loosely based on the actual life of the real Evita. The story follows Evita from the day of her death in July 1952, and then we have flashbacks until that moment, covering her coming to Buenos Aires, alleged love affairs, meeting Peron, being the first lady and dying of cancer at 33.
Being the first theatre version of the somewhat revised concept album material, this disc is not the best recording available. There are several drawbacks. First, it lacks a great part of the show, since all we have here are snippets, i.e., the main musical numbers, meaning it is a bit difficult to follow the story if you are a first-time listener, even though the booklet provides a basic story outline. One of the other obvious weaknesses is the minimalist orchestrations used on this recording. After the lush and epic sound of the concept album featuring the London philharmonics and a rock band, here we have the usual pit orchestra, consisting of only the basic instruments. Thus the beauty of the score remains somewhat lost and is only traceable in hints. The authors seem to be aware of it, since for the upcoming Broadway recording of the show, the orchestrations were improved and sounded clearer.
In addition, the cast performance here is also mixed. Although the role of Eva Peron raised Elaine Paige to stardom, I find her performance not the best, simply because her voice sounds too young. With time her vocal abilities matured, but here she just doesn't reach a much needed uncompromising determination of the character, the way Patti LuPone did on Broadway or Julie Covington on the original album. That is not to say that Elaine performance here is altogether bad, but it could have been much better. David Essex, on the other hand, is a very good Che. He has the strong vocal power Colm Wilkonson and Antonio Banderas both demonstrated in their interpretation, which leaves one wondering why was Mandy Patinkin cast in the role when the show was transferred to Broadway, since he had a very light and unpleasant voice. Joss Ackland, an esteemed British actor is a well chosen Peron, with a suitable dark note in his performance.
The CD comes with a couple of the production photos, but no lyrics are included.
For those of you who are getting acquainted with the story of Eva Peron for the first time I must point out: Bear in mind that this musical is only loosely based on the life of the real Evita. As much as Tim Rice's lyrics are craftily made, they lack a lot of historical accuracy. As a historian I became very interested in Eva Peron's life story so I did some research after seeing the movie. It turned out that the authors based their entire work on a single book called EVITA: THE WOMAN WITH A WHIP by Mary Main. It was based on rumors, lies and myths, written with the single purpose of slandering Eva Peron as much as possible. It contains no footnotes and no bibliography. The authors used it mainly because it was one of the few books available on the subject in the English language during the 70-is. So one should be very careful in making any conclusions based on the musical or the movie alone.
So this disk is more of a welcomed addition for the collectors of the Evita cast recordings, rather than a first-choice album for the new listeners. The latter should get one of the three available 2-CD albums: the 1976 concept recording with Julie Covington, the 1979 Broadway cast with the best Evita of them all, the Tony-winning Patti LuPone, or the very good 1996 movie soundtrack with Madonna in the lead. They all have the complete score and are much more satisfying than this highlights album.
Not the Original Broadway Cast, but not bad.......2005-08-17
This soundtrack does not, in my opinion, rate as high as the Original Broadway Cast album with Mandy Patinkin and Patti Lupone, but it is not too bad. It is incomplete, which was a disappointment. Elaine Page doesn't hold a candle to Patti Lupone as Evita, and the Che leaves much to be desired. The highlight of this album is "Another Suitcase in Another Hall" which is simply superb. It was worth buying the cd just for that song. Some of the lyrics are different, which was interesting to hear, because they changed them around a bit when Evita was brought to the US. If you are an Evita lover I would suggest this album, but if you are just being introduced to Evita I would suggest going with the Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin cd.
Misleading CD cover.......2005-05-07
I wanted the complete Evita soundtrack, and this rendition was terribly disappointing. The cd ends abruptly mid story. Voices are spectacular of course, but the cover suggests this is the original London peformance and a buyer, like me, expects the entire musical score. I wouldn't buy this again.
MISSING SO MANY GOOD SONGS.......2004-07-11
THANK GOODNESS FOR THE BROADWAY PRODUCTION OF EVITA! THIS MUSCIAL IS VERY GOOD, YET IT HAS SOME WEAK SPOTS, BUT THAT DOSN'T MEAN LONDON SHOULD TAKE THEM OUT IN THE FIRST STAGE PRODUCTION OF EVITA. THERE ARE A LOT OF MISTAKES AND THINGS THEY SHOULD OF ADDED. HERE'S A LIST.
*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'RAINBOR TOUR' I LOVE THAT SONG
*BUENOS AIRES SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*A NEW ARGETINA SHOULD OF BEEN LONGER
*THEY SHOULD OF ADDED 'DICE ARE ROLLING" ANYTHING THAT HAS THE 'A NEW ARGETINA' MUSIC I JUST LOVE.
*THE COVER LOOKS TOO OLD. IF THEY WERE GONNA PUT IT ON A CD, THEY SHOULD OF MADE A NEW LOOK OR COVER.
*IT SHOULD OF HAD 23 SONGS INSTEAD OF 15
THERE ARE A LOT MORE REASONS WHY THIS CD WAS DREADFULL BUT I DON'T WANT TO WASTE YOUR TIME. I SAY BUY THE ORIGINAL BROADWAY CAST WITH THE EXELLENT PATTIE LuPONE. WHO CARES ABOUT THAT ESSEX GUY.

European fire and sophistication.......2007-06-27
As an enthusiast of the "Man of La Mancha", I was very interested in this French language version, which is quite expressive. Even though I don't speak French, I can tell this by the inflection of the singers. All the roles are portrayed with a great deal of verve. For example, in the song "Aldonza", the soloist Joan Diener, exudes a great deal of anguish and frustration bordering on a complete meltdown.
Then again, this IS the FRENCH version. One would expect a language so Romantic and nasal, to carry a musical such as "Man of La Mancha" with a certain touch of European fire and sophistication. It is quite different from the English language versions, but still nice and worthy of a powerful message.
I am still waiting for a Spanish language version which would be quite appropriate giving the setting.
Comparisons: Original Broadway Cast; Brian Stokes Mitchell as Quixote; Placido Domingo as Quixote; Jim Nabors as Quixote.
This Is A Fine Version Even Though It Is In French.......2005-12-07
I know French speaking people are going to hate the above title of this "review". I'm speaking for "the average" English speaking person here. I didn't compare the English versions with this one. In listening to this one I am taking it on "its own merits" as a "listenting experience". Even though I couldn't understand most of the words, I do know the story which helped me understand "the emotion" underlying the words. After listening to this CD twice, I can honestly say that it is an "experience" ---- a "fulfilling experience" to hear the different types of voices in this production....and to hear the emotion conveyed by the singers. Without making any protestations that this is "the best one", I will say that I think if you like "Man of La Mancha" you will appreciate this version very much. Why not buy one of The English versions AND this one to complement them....or vice versa....as I say, I'm not comparing here----all I'm saying is that this one is very good and possibly "great" in its own right. You will enjoy it! (There are two editions of this CD: this is the edition with FRENCH LINER NOTES published in 2004. If you are "handicapped" by speaking only English, you should consider THE OTHER version published in 2005 which has excellent Liner Notes written by Thelma Blitz of NYC) Email:boland7214@aol.
Two Profound Paths Cross.......2004-07-06
One of those artistic miracles that is almost impossible to believe. Man of La Mancha, of course, is the Show That Cannot Die. (I've been in productions that were so bad they *should* have died, but that didn't stop the standing ovations for one of the most profound musicals of the 20th century.) Brel, meanwhile, is a singer whose passion, sorrow and wisdom cut through any language barrier. So how strange and wonderful that Brel should translate Man of La Mancha into French, then star it it himself! What prompted him I've never fully understood. (The story is recounted in Eric Blau's book about "Jaques Brel is Alive and Well...") I gather that Brel, who himself always seemed so intent on facing life as it is with courage, found some strange sympathy with the Cervantes who said "Perhaps insanity lies in seeing life as it is, and not as it should be." There is no way to listen to this recording without hearing both the English (Richard Kiley) version and Brel's own songs in one's head. You'll be pondering it for days afterwards.

Only Wish It Had Crossed The Atlantic.......2005-06-18
"Closer To Heaven" has a wonderful score & is a great "first attempt" by the Pet Shop Boys into theatre. The songs are beutifully produced and contain thoughtful lyrics. A couple of the songs are "so-so", but most of the score is great! Best songs include:
Something Special
Closer To Heaven [a terrific ballad version of their "nightlife version]
For All Of Us
Positive Role Model
Despite this being a theatrical score, it plays like a great pop cd. I only wish the production would have played in the U.S. as I would have loved to see it!
Absolutely fabulous!!!.......2004-05-14
The music and the design for the show were phenomenal. Yes, like any other musical, it presents itself with a `drag'. But this musical takes a twist that Mr. Rice would love to contrive. Most of the music is a remake and re-constructed. The only songs which was totally 70's was "Out of my system". The rest of the show and music was incredible. With over nine years of theater musical direction, I only wish that I had the finances to re-design/re-construct the show and tour it through America.
The Best Pop Album Of Recent Years.......2002-07-07
This is simply classic pop. The fact that PSB don't perform the songs here isn't too critical: It actually provides more variety to the album. Buy it even if you are not a PSB fan and haven't seen the musical(i didn't see the musical).
1 My Night(10)- Brilliant start. Classic PSB pop song with a great funny vocal by a female singer and a nice twist as the whole cast joins in. Great mixture of a pop and musical.
2 Something Special(8)- Full of Heart.
3 Closer To Heaven(8) Romantic.
4 In Denial(8)- Upbeat song.
5 Call Me Old Fashioned(10)- Funny, marvelours pop. Classic PSB.
6 Nine Out Ten(8)- 8 out of ten actually. Nice duet.
7 Caligula(10)- More funny Euphoric pop from the female vocalist of the first song. She's great.
8 Hedonism(Instrumental)(10)- Great dance instrumental. Relentless style.
9 Friendly Fire(8)- Good tune and lyrics. Sad song.
10 Shameless(8)- Great song, but in this case only it falls from the original PSB performance(most of the songs here are completely new).
11 Vampires(6)- Every silver lining has a clowd... Yeah, i know it should be opposite. Didn't like this one on Nightlife as well.
12 Closer To Heaven(8)- Different version.
13 Out Of My System(4)- Awful. Doens't sound PSB at all with the annoying Cher sample. Sounds like Posh Spice Out Of My Mind.
14 K-Hole(8). A Mysterious instrumental. Nice.
15 For All Of Us(10)- Awesome. Emotional. Brilliant. Perfect. Get The Picture?
16 Closer To heaven(8)- Short this time, but nice. Very Sad indeed!
17 Positive Role Model(8)- Barry White sample(My First, My Last: Ally Mcbeal). Very nice.
To sum it up: Brilliant.

Make this YOURS!.......2001-06-10
How can people argue that musicals now are becoming tuneless? There can be no argument with the Witches of Eastwick: The musical score must be, without a doubt, the best musical score of the 21st century. The such beautiful harmonies written for the leading ladies - Lucie Arnaz, Maria Friedman and Joanna Riding - are just so wonderful; beyond words. This CD captures the feeling of being there live as much as any CD can do. Ian McShane does not always sing ( a mixture of singing and wonderful acting)does that matter? No, I don't think so - Every single part of the Witches of Eastwick is performed at the best quality possible and the score, suitable for both modern and contemporary style listeners, surely, is the best model for new, some may say less tuneful shows of this era.
You'll Wanna Dance With The Devil!!!.......2001-02-17
I have already posted a review of this smart, vibrant musical, that displays that all the power we ever need, is within ourselves. As our three lovely, lady leads belt out, in perfect harmony (Along with many other songs in the musical), in the final number "Look At Me." I went to London in the spring of 2000, hoping that I would go to the theatre at Drury Lane to see Miss Saigon. But sadly, it closed, and I was sad. But when I saw that Cameron Mackintosh, the greatest musical thatre producer of our time, was making a musical version of a literary and cinematic classic, and he was reteaming with John Dempsey and Dana P. Rowe. The duo who wrote the aggressively witty political satire musical "The Fix," (Also produced by Mackintosh) I was filled with even more anticipation. For all of you who had the smarts to heed my review of "The Fix," when I hailed it as a underrated musical masterpiece, the you'll know that with "The Witches of Eastwick," you will recieve music and lyrics that "Snap, crackle, pop" with life and energy. Starting with a rollicking overture all the way to a touching finale. Along with many brilliant musical numbers in between. "Make Him Mine," "I Wish I may," and the before mentioned "Look At Me" Are sung beautifully by Riding, Arnaz, and Friedman. Their voice combined perfectly displays unity between our three heroines. And Ian Mcshane is divinely devillish in his portrayal of Darryl Van Horne, the man of our three ladies' dreams. You know he's the devil but you just can't help enjoying his wild antics in his songs "I Love a Little Town," "Dance With The Devil," and "Who's The Man." With these songs. McShane managed to give something to the role that Jack Nicholson could never supply in his portrayal of "Ol' Scratch" I'm hoping and praying that this play eventually comes to Broadway, very soon. This will be the first musical where I will see the three lovely ladies fly all over my head and watch a church explode. I don't see what's stopping them. The show seems to be taking London by storm. It will only be a matter of time before the Witches Cast their spell upon us all. Amongst many of the great, new musicals that we've been graced with this past year. "Witches of Eastwick" is a major standout that has life of it's own, that will definitely pave the way for Dempsey and Rowe's potentially, illustrious careers. This musical is like a drug. You'll want to keep listening to it over and over, until each song is trapped in your head, and you'll never want to let them go. I don't think I'm making an overstatement by saying that this is one of th best new musicals to start the new millenium. So Make this CD yours!!!
Spotty but entertaining.......2001-02-12
I've heard mixed things about the show "The Witches of Eastwick" -- some good, most terrible. I probably won't be able to comment on the show as a whole until the show is brought to Broadway, if it ever is, but I can comment on the score right now.
And "mixed" is still the adjective I reach for, though my feelings about the score on the whole skew more towards the positive. I'm not bewitched by Ian McShane's portrayal of Darryl Van Horn or by the songs he's given, though maybe you just had to be there. And while Rosemary Ashe dazzles as Felicia, I find her songs to be even sillier and less functional than Darryl's.
But all of this is forgotten whenever the leading ladies are heard. Composers Dana Rowe and John Dempsey had their work cut out for them in writing for the Devil, and succumbed a bit too much to caricature when writing for the townspeople... but they came through in spades for the more complex lead characters Alexandra, Jane and Sukie. Their seduction numbers are all brilliant, as are their second-act solos and several trios. Lucie Arnaz, Joanna Riding and Maria Friedman sing beautifully and create memorable characters.
The import price is a little steep for half a good score, but theatre buffs will consider it a must.
UNBELIEVABLE!.......2001-02-10
Unbelievable! I saw the show two weeks after it opened it London's West End. This soundtrack brought back so many awesome memories from the show. It's as true to the show as any soundtrack possibly could be. I was very impressed. The music is as memorable as "Phantom" or "Les Mis". This is well worth the wait!
The Witches of Eastwick - Original London Cast CD.......2001-01-29
I recently saw this show in London and was very pleasantly surprised! The CD contains all of the songs from the show with the exception of a few reprises.
All of Dana P. Rowe's melodies are "hummable" after only a few listenings and John Dempsey's clever lyrics range from warm and tender ("Something") to pompously Neanderthal ("Who's the Man?"). You won't hear anything new or different in the music (like Sondheim, Brown or Guettel might create). All of the musical structures are familiar to musical theatergoers. There's a rousing march in the opening number ("Eastwick Knows"), a tango duet ("Eye of the Beholder"), a bluesy vamp at the opening of Act II and a moving, sentimental ballad toward the end. Neither the score nor the CD is boring, however.
What this CD IS, is a lot of fun with some very strong performances. "Dirty Laundry" is a recreation of the townsfolk of River City gone bad with gossip. Rosemary Ashe's beautiful coloratura (she was the original Carlotta in "The Phantom of the Opera") sails high above the chorus at the end of the number a la Jonesy in "How to Succeed..." - transforming the ensemble number into "The Brotherhood of 'Mean'". Ms. Ashe is truly a highlight on this CD as Felicia Gabriel. Resentment and cynicism ooze from her voice as she spits up coins, candles and cherry pits during my favorite cut, "Evil". It's hard to believe this is the same woman who produced that lovely high passage in "Dirty Laundry"!
Ian McShane (known in the US from the "Lovejoy" series on PBS) rips into the character of Darryl van Horne via some very strong vocal acting on his part and the hilariously vulgar lyrics of "I Love a Little Town". As Alexandra, Lucie Arnaz' hard, jazzy belt is perfectly jaded in the very vampy, "Another Night at Darryl's" (again, some very cleverly written lyrics from Mr. Dempsey). Maria Friedman (Sukie) performs the very warmly written ballad, "Loose Ends" with touching sensitivity.
The three leading ladies (including Joanna Riding as Jane) have similar vocal qualities. Their three-part harmonies are well executed in "Make Him Mine" and are particularly lovely in the finale of Act I, "I Wish I May". I am delighted to find this number in its entirety on the CD and it doesn't take much imagination to hear the ladies fly through the theater as they actually did in the London production (even down to their ad-libs).
My only criticism of this recording is a matter of personal taste and involves the quality of the cast's voices. Not all would be considered strong singers. Ian McShane uses his acting ability to carry him through most of his songs. Maria Friedman, a very well accomplished musical theater actress in the UK (US folks may recognize her as the Narrator in the video release of "Joseph..."), sounds hoarse throughout most of the CD and noticeably "cracks" at times.
All of the leads (with the exception of Rosemary Ashe) have a "nervous vibrato" - the extremely rapid, fluttery vibrato that makes the pitch of every note sung seem almost sharp. A whole CD of this kind of singing is a little hard on the ears, but strong performances and an extremely likable score make this CD well worth hearing.
