Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01
I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

Quite good, but not a stellar "Trek".......2007-05-18
Silva Screen Records has made a name for itself releasing reproductions of modern orchestral soundtracks, with most of its products centering around a particular genre or composer. Star Trek has a history of quality music, so its no suprise Silva has taken a crack at music in the final frontier. This is a fine release, with some strong points and some weak ones as well.
IN GENERAL: For the purist looking for a "best of" compilation taken from the original soundtracks take note: this isn't that product. Rather, these are reproductions by Nic Raine conducting the City of Prague Philharmonic. That said, this is a quality group, and the general sound is professional and comes off quite well (for the most part..I'll mention a few exceptions). It is superior to the other releases I have heard from the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra.
SELECTION: The biggest advantage here is variety of sources. The Trek feature films are all represented here, as well as the various series (except for the last one, "Enterprise"). The thouroughness seems to match or excel the oher Star Trek Compilation CDs that have been released. There are a few other offbeat additions..notably a four minute suite from the videogame Star Fleet Academy. Personally, I found this bland track to be four minutes of wasted disk space. The original series has many memorable moments (listen to the Amok Time/The Doomsday Machine soundtrack) which would be be more exciting and also a better fit on this album.
Jerry Goldsmith's standard Star Trek March is heard far too often on these 2 CDs. The march itself is terrific, but it has been used so much it has become the franchise's major theme and the album's producers rely on it by representing many movies by their "End Titles". Unfortunately, Goldsmith's end titles consistently use a three-section approach: two sections of the "standard" Star Trek March sandwich a middle section of music that is unique for that particular film. This is OK if you are listening to a single movie's soundtrack, but for a compilation album, the fourth or fifth time you hear the march, it is too much. It would have been a better idea to cut a few "End Title" performances in favor of other selections from the films' soundtracks.
PERFORMANCE QUALITY: For the most part it is very good and captures the spirit of the original soundtracks. Selections from Horner's scores for the second and third films stand out as particularly well done. The last movie, "Nemesis" also has a terrifically arranged suite, and most of the movie soundtrack reproductions are very good quality. The only exception is from "Klingon Attack" in which the awesome bass of the "blaster-beam" from the original cannot be matched by the comparatively hollow synthesized atempt here.
PERSONAL GRIPE: the inclusion of sound effects. Every so often a special effect like "Warp Drive" or "Dogfight in Space" pops up between tracks. This by itself would be extremely cheesy. Add to this that these are not the actual sound effects from the TV shows or movies and the cheesiness levels reach a level I think only a Wisconsin resident could appreciate. Sci Fi music (and Star Trek in particular) seems to inspire some labels to add special effects inclusions like this. Who knows why.
Love The Soundtrack.......2007-04-03
I bought this soundtrack and I love it.A great edition to the star trek fans.
Best ST recording in the Alpha Quadrant.......2007-01-10
Great collection of Star Trek series and Movie themes; only a Klingon
Opera is missing.
I must disagree.......2005-07-17
I own all the original recordings, and I still enjoy this re-recording. It is good. It is better than the Cincinatti Pops "Symphonic Star Trek", it is better than the Richard Hayman "Star Trek" compilation from 89, its better than the Sci Fi compilation on the Edel label from 93 and for the most part is better than Varese's Ultimate Star Trek from 1998.
This collection has music you will not find anywhere else. The Tasha's Farewell track is beautiful and the only other place its avialable is the Edel "Best of Science Fiction" compilation from 1993, and while that was recorded by the same orchestra, it was with a different conductor, and comparing the two, you can tell that Nic Raine was more successful with Prague than William Motzing was. That said Edel release is also more than $30 here on amazon. Also this release is in HDCD Dolby which is a plus. There's also two cues from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; one of them is on The Best of Star Trek: 30th Anniversary Special, the other is not on any other album. In addition, there is music from Ron Jones "Starfleet Academy" video game which is pretty cool to listen to, and not availble anywhere else that I know of. Finally, Jerry Goldsmith's main theme can get boring after a while, I mean, its repetitive that it is in all the end credit suites, it would have been nice for Insurrection to have maybe an action cue instead of the end credits suite...And Nic Raine, did just that, only for Star Trek: Nemesis. Instead of the tradition end credit suite, Mr. Raine arranged a professional suite with the main Nemesis theme, some action cues, as well as the Goldsmith Star Trek march, and it is a wonderful 8 minutes. If you already have the 3 space and beyond albums, the Star Trek Nemesis track as well as Birds of Prey Decloaking from Star Trek III are the only new tracks on this CD.
This is a must-buy for fans of star trek in general, and hardcore star trek fans should buy this album for the aforementioned cues that aren't available anywhere else.
Middle-Trek.......2005-01-13
I rate this album as fair-to-middlin' for Trek score tributes.
After Star Trek: The Motion Picture's ground breaking and intensely serious dramatic score, the other Trek filmscores slide downhill somewhat and like the films themselves became less spectacular. Goldsmith himself never even re-captured the grandness of the first film's music and it shows in this album. The playing by the orchestra is fairly competent but it suffers a bit by being a smaller ensemble and these scores need at least 90 or 100 pieces to do them justice. Also the "Blaster Beam" instrument is so integral to a couple of the scores as to be alarming by it's absence. Only Craig Huxley and Micheal Stearns still use one as they built each-other's instrument in the late seventies.
What would have rescued this album from the admittedly 'high end' of mediocrity would have been if the producers could have recorded some of the missing cues from ST-1 and ST-2 and maybe a couple of the others.
This would have made it much more valuable to soundtrack collectors and Star Trek music buffs.
What we are left with is a nicely produced somewhat 'ho-hum' in an endless series of Trek music covers...

Alexander Courage may have given the sprawling Star Trek franchise its signature musical fanfare, but for two decades it's been composer Jerry Goldsmith who's periodically infused the film and TV cycles with their crucial musical heart and soul or, as in the case of this rousing masterwork, their fire and fury. Giving nearly free reign to his notably modernist muse, the veteran has turned in a dark and driving orchestral maelstrom that's relieved only by its edgy, occasionally synth-burnished passages of alien intrigue and mounting suspense. Underpinned by bracing blasts of massive brass worthy of Bernard Herrmann and powered by Goldsmith's passionate sense of drama and mastery of orchestral color and dynamics, it's a score that not only ranks among the best of the imposing Trek musical catalog, but certainly one of the composer's most accomplished sci-fi scores of the last 20 years. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Great Soundtrack.......2007-04-03
I absolutely love the soundtrack. I love Star Trek and it is a good soundtrack to have.
Darker and haunting.......2006-05-07
This was Jerry Goldsmith's last soundtrack before he passed away.
It's a shame, he brought Star Trek to life through music. All us Trekkers will remember him.
I think he did a marvelous job of making the atmosphere of the soundtrack darker and more haunting and still retains that "Star Trek sound." There are action sequences like "Lateral Run" and "The Scorpion." There are also some touching pieces reflecting back on Data's herioc sacrifice. "A New Ending" and "A New Friend" are perfect examples of Data's last moments.
I was shocked that the producers didn't put in Data's rendition of Irving Berlin's "Blue Skies!" I never knew Brent Spiner could sing that well............
Listen to this soundtrack and let it take you back to the world of Star Trek.
Good, But It's Mssing Something..........2005-01-28
I loved the movie Star Trek Nemesis and the music was great. I'm glad they have a CD of the music from the film. However, I am APPALLED that the song "Blue Skies" wasn't incorporated into the CD. How could they do that?! To me, the Deanna Troi/ Will Riker Wedding was made a little better by Data singing them "Blue Skies" for his wedding present. But, putting that aside, I would highly recommend this CD
Awesome.......2004-07-29
This album is absolutely awesome. Jerry Goldsmith was an amazing composer, and as one of the last albums he's done, this is amazing.
The Best Star Trek Score By Far.......2004-06-03
Jerry Goldsmith is a master composer. There are few people who will disagree with that assessment, but something about the tenth (and final?) "Star Trek" movie has inspired him to new heights. From the opening moments of the spectacularly pulse-pounding "Remus" -- one of the best pieces of music written for a "Star Trek" movie -- to the awesome "Engage" and finally "A New Ending," the grand conclusion to a terrific soundtrack. There isn't one misstep in this collection. If accompanied by a better movie this score gets an Oscar nomination hands down.

A Knight's Tale.......2006-12-30
This is such a fun CD. Mixes, jigs, electric guitar, choirs--what more could you ask for? Oh, and fanfares, of course.
Excellent Soundtrack Masterpiece.......2004-03-12
A knight's tale is one of the best movies ever made in history. It has everything from action to comedy to romance, all which I love in a movie. The soundtrack lives up to the movie. This is one of the best soundtracks ever composed. All the songs on here are excellently performed. My favorite song would be Track #7- To run or not to run. Excellent emotional song, good love theme also. I recommend to soundtrack to all soundtrack collectors. Do not pass this one by, for this soundtrack is already hard to come bye, so if you seen the movies and loved the score get the soundtrack, i guarantee you will not be disappointed.
Rousing and beautiful.......2003-02-22
Carter Burwell, who provided the score for A Knight's Tale, had to come up with music that would carry the film through. After all, it is the score, not the rock music that is the heart and soul of a movie. With that in mind, he succeeds. The music is heroic and romantic with lots of great sounds in it. "Nemesis" kicks things off with dramatic, medieval music, which leads to an adventurous section with plenty of horns and driving percussion. "Cooked Patents" contains an electric guitar mixed with traditional instruments from medieval times. "A Lance Without Target" is another thrilling adventure track with the same music that existed in "Nemesis." "St. Vitus' Dance" is utilized in 2 different tracks with different mixes. The Smithy mix is much better than the Grog mix. The best theme in the score is the love theme, which is a mainly string oriented 10 note motif that is the heart and soul of the film. The best tracks that showcase this outstanding theme are "To Run Or Not To Run" and the best track, "Showdown", which reprises all the other themes into one almost 7 minute track. An added bonus to this score is dialogue from the film from Chaucer, played by Paul Bettany found in the last track, after the music dies down. The director of the film, Brian Helgeland, describes the music in this way: "Carter's music has got sixth sense. It goes a level deeper than it's supposed to. It doesn't play the emotion of the character, the emotion of the moment. It plays the psyche, the consciousness of the character. Carter's music psychoanalyzes the moment. But in our hearts as well as our heads." I couldn't have said it any better.
Perfect soundtrack........2002-09-07
If you are checking for a wonderfull soundtract you must get this. I listen this and it was so great that i'm listennung this songs alll day in the car, in my house, in school, even in the bathroom! You must have this cd at your own home. 5 stars!
"always a fresh approach with each score...Burwell!".......2001-09-05
A talent to be reckoned with ~ Carter Burwell...who has in such a short time given filmgoers a trip and a half through his music...reaching down in his big black bag on past achievements ~ "Raising Arizona" (1987), "Miller's Crossing" (1990), "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1992), "Rob Roy" (1995), "Fargo" (1996), "Conspiracy theory" (1997), "The Big Lebowski" (1998), "Being John Malkovich" (1999), "The Corruptor" (1999), "The Generals Daughter" (1999), "Book Of Shadows:Blair Witch 2" (2000), "Hamlet" (2000), "O Brother Where Art Thou" (2000)...I only mention a few from his over fifty scores composed since 1984.
There are stand outs ~ "ST. VITUS' DANCE (SMITHY MIX)", "ST. VITUS' DANCE (GROG MIX), "THE SHOWDOWN", bringing all the counterpoints and themes together, blending each with particular care...but the highlight has to be ~ "TO RUN OR NOT TO RUN", beautiful beyond all doubt, strings open with muted brass and the theme comes through like a ray of sunshine entering a group of trees, thundering percussion abounds giving each measure strength to behold, one of the best compositions I've heard from this composer who is rising to his place in the stars.
Entire album is a must have for any "film-score-buff", don't pass this up...you'll be missing an important part in the career of the composer extradinor' ~ CARTER BURWELL!

Like it.........2005-04-13
I like the soundtrack because im very hooked with the game. Specially, when you finished the game, i love the music that is playing (Disc 2 Staffs and Credits) very much. It want to feel like "you did it!" thing.. And i also felt the tense and horror of the music, really.. So if you want to complete your collection of resident evil soundtracks, this is a must! And oh, if you want to have a copy of this in mp3, just let me know. I know a website that is offering a download of soundtracks of all Resident Evil, that's right. ALL!!
A decent collection, but perhaps it could have been better.......2002-04-07
This Nemesis CD is a great collection of the creepy musical score that fans have come to love about the videogame series, and I do recommend it to anyone whose trying to expand their RE soundtrack collection. However,I feel that this soundtrack could have been better. Although, Nemesis provides a decent amount of origional musical scores, there are a number of tracks that are remeniscent of the Resident Evil 2 soundtrack. Also, while the Resident Evil 2 soundtrack had a diverse collection of scores ranging from scary to soothing, this is not as apparent in the Nemesis soundtrack. Never the less, it is still a decent soundtrack worth purchasing if you're a die-hard fan of the series, or at least this videogame.
Great game..........2002-03-20
From the very beginning to the very end, this game gets your attention and makes you think. Many puzzles, lots of gore and violence, and a good storyline. Throughout the whole game, a monster called Nemesis follows you, almost as if he's hunting for your blood. Nemesis is the persistant type, even after you do away with him, he comes back...many times.
This is the sort of game that you can breeze through if you're really into it. Like I said, very violent...but fun. Nice ending too.
There's also an extra game at the end that tests your skills to the limit, so if you're going to get this game, look forward to that too.
Resident Evil 3.......2001-04-18
Coming in at just seconds under two hours, this album is a good example of a `complete score' release. Some of the cues time at just five seconds, so completists really don't feel that anything is left out.
This time working with Saori Ueda, composer Masami Ueda shines in this score. The style is recognisably a continuation of Resident Evil 2, and seems bigger due to the length of the album and the variety of material.
Generally, the music is sombre and oppressive, which perfectly conjures back the game (and matches it when you hear it in that context). Jill's progress through destroyed nighttime streets of the city is vividly re-created in the music. Fear and suspense are evoked by use of sustained chords, punctuated by sounds such as bell tolls (a reference to the clock tower that will figure in the story's middle chapter). The clanking you can hear at times sounds much like Brad Feidel's Terminator scores. There is also a touch of Graeme Revell's The Crow in here.
At the other end of the mood scale, the action-music is based on violent orchestral strings and blaring brass, imitating Nick Glennie Smith and Hans Zimmer's score for The Rock. As in his score for Resident Evil 2, Ueda uses piano to soften the general harshness, and again, the result is very pleasing, and keeps this score from being too much like the movie sources he draws from.
Also like the Resident Evil 2 album, it's a little strange to have music fade out rather than come to an end, but this is due to the music being written for continuous looping. A piece will play in the game for as long as you are in a room or area, so it isn't structured to come to an end.
If you listen to the album in the wrong frame of mind, its low-key character can make the music fall easily out of your notice. But in the right mood, it is quite enthralling. In all, a very good album if you're a fan of film scores and/or Resident Evil games.
More scares from RE.........2001-01-21
Resident Evil 3 is another great game, but the musical compositions are starting to run out of steam a bit. Still, this massive Cd runs over 2 full discs, so you can't complain of a rip-off. The best tunes here are the opening, the save room theme (more sinister than previous tunes) and Nemesis's theme. Shame you don't get him grunting "Starrrrssss..." over the top! The mood of the destroyed city is impressively conveyed in some very dismal tracks, but a lot of this is too uniformly similar, and the closing theme is not on a par with those of RE1 & 2. Actually, there's almost TOO much music on here, I swear I can only remember about half of it. Don't get me wrong, it's still good, it's just the lesser of the three PSX soundtracks. (The game itself rocks!!)

IMMERSIVE SCORE THAT HAS TO BE PLAYED - LOUD!.......2004-09-11
Don't listen to the inexperienced reviews here. One of JG's best works! If you are a fan of the movie, this soundtrack is a real treat. My favorite tracks are: Track 3-My Right Arm, this short track speaks emotional volumes. Track 9-Scorpion, incredible, draws you right in, you can practically see the scene from the movie but this track HAS TO BE PLAYED LOUD. Track 11-Engage, another to be played loud. Track 12-Final Flight, you can almost see Data 'fly'. Track 14-New Ending, 'Blue Skies' intro fade into Trek theme is spectacular. I purchased the SACD for the extra $ and bought a SACD player just for this disc. WOW! - In 5.1 audio, you will be blown away, like nothing you've ever heard! Blast Track 9 and you'll see what I mean. MORE SACD RELEASES!!!
Great film but poor score.......2004-06-11
Goldsmith always manages to pull off great scores for the Star Trek movies and Next Gen, Deep Space 9 and Voyager tv series. But he fails in so many levels to capture the excitment of this action packed film. Maybe hes getting old or lacks the exuberance he once had. After doing hundreds of film and tv scores I dont blame him if he lacks originality. Star Trek the motion picture still stands as his best for the Star Trek movies. Hope you can come out with more originality in his other film scores.
Almost as good as Goldsmith's first foray into TREK!.......2003-05-05
Jerry Goldsmith's score to "Star Trek: the Motion Picture" stands as a pinnacle in the annals of music for a science fiction epic. The composer's contribution to the latest installment in the long-running saga is a worthy addition to an already brilliant string of monumental scores.
This disc offers the listener to fully appreciate the powerful themes that were overshadowed somewhat in the theater experience. A more militaristic score than his previous scores, "Nemesis" bombards and thrills the senses, befitting the confrontation between the valiant Enterprise crew and its latest enemy.
The quality of SACD is definitely worth the extra expense and, like Trek, is a preview of things to come.
For that, audiophiles can be most appreciative.

Good music!.......2003-07-28
Michel Rubini is not one of the most well-known soundtrack composers in the world. In fact, most of the movies he's done music for were ultimately forgotten cult-classics or B-movies, yet the man is capable of some truly exciting and dynamic music. "Nemesis" is probably one of the best examples of the B-movie aesthetic, with little or no production value, poor special effects, relatively bad acting, and a less-than-effective script. Yet, it was one of the better B-movies ever made, considering what that film's director has done before and since (all the "Nemesis" and "Kickboxer" sequels, as well as one of Van Damme's earlier movies, "Cyborg"). At least "Nemesis" made an attempt to look like it had a bigger budget than it actually had, and that helped save the movie. The other saving grace is Michel Rubini's score. Relying very much on recurring themes and motifs, the music is a good mix of modern synthesis and classical symphonics. Utilizing strange sound effects and rocking guitars to add to the futuristic feel, but still based in the traditional symphonic score, the music gives the impression of a futuristic world still close to our own, but on the verge of a technological spasm. It's by no means the most original soundtrack, and certainly not the greatest, but it is a very well-made, well-produced soundtrack, and one that deserves a little more recognition. Sure it's from a movie with a budget lower than the average cost of high school lunch (figuratively speaking of course), but the movie itself is actually not that bad, and the soundtrack is pretty darn good. If you can find it, I recommend it.
