Following Anna Sokolow The choreographer who knew to listen and discover good composers I discovered Alex North who was Anna Sokolow's companion at her early days. I found his music restful (most of it). Directors in Hollywood knew to choose the right composer for great films.; Technical information: In order to listen to the music you need a DVD player, In my product I can not use a CD player.

Memories of FF.......2005-05-31

Japanese story telling in various media has been the driving force in anime and various RPG's. Unpredictable stories and lovable characters. Gundam seed is the epitome of this genre. As with the Final Fantasy series music is used to describe emotional moments in the series.

Track 1: the very first score played in Phase 1 False peace, very gentle melody, "peaceful"

Track 2: Rightfully called Suspense, was used during the infiltration of Zaft in Heliopolis, nicely done by the LSO

Track 3: Take off, for obvious reasons this was titled so. The score played during the pre-launch sequence of both gundams, mobile armors, and the Skygrasper from the Archangel

Track 4: This made the CD worth it. Titled memory because of the emotional moments when this score was played. When Kira thinks of the past and his friendship with Athrun

Track 5: Zafuto or "Zaft" pretty much their theme music. Similar to the imperial march. Threatening. direct from the anime

Track 6: Death, Forgive me but this is my only failure. The fan that i am i cannot pinpoint where this was in the series. I assume it has something to do with Nicol and Tolle.

Track 7: Music that was played during various points in the ending quarter of the series. Much to do with the Freedom and Justice Gundams.

Track 8: The ending theme song, Anna ni isho Datta noni, Superbly done by the LSO. Easily recognizable by fans to the series.

Track 9: Lacus's song of peace. Shizukana i believe it's titled, (NEVER LISEN TO THIS IN THE SERIES IN ENGLISH its a terrible Britney spears-like ballad, Always credit Rei tanaka by listening to it done by her in japanese on dvd 2, or the LSO) =D

Track 10: Finale, obviously present in the final dvd of the series. Played often when Freedom and Justice Dock with the Meteor units. Perfectly performed, definitely makes you want to watch DVD 10 all over again, and again and again.

A Nice Melody Mixture.......2005-05-06

I have to admit that I anticipated this CD greatly, and the first time I listened to it, I was a bit disappointed. I guess I was expecting more of the Gundam SEED theme songs to be reproduced than were actually done on the CD (of course, I have not seen the entire TV series). Having said that, I still greatly enjoyed the London Symphony Orchestra's marvelous talents, and the entire CD is growing on me very quickly. There are several points during the CD when I thought I was listening to the soundtrack for Galaxy Quest or Harry Potter instead of my beloved Gundam SEED, but hey.... it's all science fiction, right? Anyway, my favourite tracks on the CD are #4(Memory), #7(Gundam) and #8(The Song).

Track #1 (Opening) is good, but I was expecting it to sound more like the music from the opening of the show. Instead, it is a fanfare that sounds like the opening of a blockbuster movie. I still enjoyed it, it just wasn't what I expected.

Tracks #2(Suspense) and #3(Take Off), were okay, but nothing spectactular. Track #3 is the one that sounded like Galaxy Quest to me.

#4(Memory) is just like in the tv series when Kira is thinking about his friendship with Athrun (or vice versa). Very poignant and a haunting melody. The flutes and clarinets are effective. One of my favourites.

Tracks #5(Zafuto) and #6(Death) are pretty good. #5 is the one that sounds to me, at times, like it's taken from the Harry Potter soundtrack, but it's still very well done. #6 is very soft and gentle, and the strings are fantastic. Very nice harmony.

#7(Gundam) is great. I don't recall hearing that music in the tv series, but it's got great drums and is very catchy. A great fanfare.

#8(The Song) is taken right from the closing of the tv show (the closing theme for the first 20-something episodes). Very nice harmony, very catchy, and exactly what I was hoping to hear. This one makes the whole CD worthwhile.

Tracks #9(A Wish) and #10(Finale) are pretty good. #9 is another nice and soft one with good combination of instruments (flutes & srings etc.) #10 is a great sendoff. Once again nice work on the strings and percussion.

All in all, even though at times I feel like I'm hearing a marching band, the CD is nicely done and worth listening to, especially if you like classical music.

Gundam SEED team and the LSO...amazing.......2004-08-19

While IMO anything the LSO (London Symphony Orchestra) does is breathtaking. The LSO pull forth their full effort with this realease as they always do, all of the instruments are vibrant and jump out at you. A Gundam SEED fan, or a LSO fan will not be disappointed with this album. The price is rather steep, so I would only buy it if either you have a few dollars to spend, or you really just want this album.

Certainly there is much more about Alex North than what is contained on this disc. What we get here is a brief concoction of mature writing styles from the Philadephia born, Russian schooled, film composer. Perhaps his greatest contribution has been to incorporate elements of jazz
into dramatic film scores. With the exception of musicals, jazz wasn't even a consideration in a field previously dominated by the classically influenced Steiner, Korngold, and Waxman. North ushered in the next generation of soundtrack composers. This is most evident in his Ocar nominated(1951) " A Street Car Named Desire". It opens with a big piece of symphonic jazz. Swing for the piano and brass with undertones of the blues for the strings. Throughout North cleverly disguises his soundtrack. The audience is unsure if the music is coming from a nearby
jazz club or is supporting the sleazy action taking place in the New Orleans slum flat. Interesting concept that only works while viewing the film. The 1961 "Misfits" (Clark Gable's last film by the way)uses a more subtle line of jazz. Romance between the Gable and Monroe characters carried by the soprano sax. For the 1956 "The Bad Seed" North really gets it right in this story of an 8yr. old unredemptioned psychopathic killer. He uses throughout a harrowing dissonant theme entwined with a an off key childlike French folk song for a chilling demented musical experience. Perfectly hiding the evil behind the innocence of a child. The single selection from 1951's "Viva Zapata" is derived from the rhythm of his followers clacking stones. They view the arrested Zapata on horse back, noose around neck, riding to his death, with a typical Mexican folk like theme buildup for full orchestra. North depicts the brutality of Rome in "Spartacus" through the ominous howling of brass, winds, and percussion. He does give us a beautiful love theme for Spartacus and his affection for a slave girl, North never forgetting his roots and gift for melody. The overall performance of the LSO is good, as with the engineers and annotators. Because the selections are generally short one feels the absence of continuity with the program.
