The Omen: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential recording
How to scare the bejesus out of yourself: spend an evening alone, lock the doors, turn off the lights, and play this CD. At the very least, the sudden twists and turns of dynamics and mood will cause some startled jumps, but there's more to Jerry Goldsmith's score than chilling effects. With help from orchestrator Arthur Morton, Goldsmith uses splashes of sound to great effect, bending pitches and inserting bursts of atonality until even the cheerful sections (very few) sound spooky. This soundtrack, which won Goldsmith an Oscar for Best Original Score in 1976, plays an enormous role in setting the tone for the classic horror film about an ordinary couple who unwittingly adopt the Antichrist. --Genevieve Williams

Jerry Goldsmith's chilling soundtrack music for Richard Donner's 1976 Antichrist-themed thriller The Omen was very nearly the score that never was; an unusual, last-minute budget extension was granted solely to secure the composer's services. That decision turned out to be one of the wisest the studio could make. Goldsmith's music would go on to score him his first Oscar
® and a Grammy award and become the crucial thematic glue that held the entire Omen trilogy together. Standing the traditional requiem form on its head, Goldsmith in essence created Satanic liturgical music. As chorally ominous as Orff's Carmina Burana, yet infused with the composer's own compelling sense of drama and color, The Omen instantly became both a genre classic and one of the musician's greatest achievements. Varese's 25th anniversary edition has largely resequenced the track order to match the film and expanded it by nearly a third with seven previously unreleased cues. These new tracks add dimensions of both pastoral calm and mounting suspense, making the familiar "Ave Satani" theme even darker and more spine tingling by contrast. Edition producer Robert Townson's detailed new notes also carefully place each cue in its cinematic and musical context. --Jerry McCulley

THE SOUNDTRACK OF NIGHTMARES.......2007-05-29
This CD should come with a DISCLAIMER!
Without exception, this is the most chilling, soul shattering, truly, deeply, profoundly disturbing musical composition ever written. What an ordeal to subject one's nerves to!
"Ave Satani" must have shocked the hell out of the audience when they performed it at the Academy Awards! And, as a previous reviewer very astutely noted, every single note of this score deserved the Academy Award.
And for the benefit of those of you unfamiliar with Latin:
Sanquis bibimus, Corpus edimus
Prode corpus Satani
Ave, Ave Versus Christus
Ave, Ave Satanti
We drink blood, We eat flesh
Bring forth the body of Satan
Hail Antichrist
Hail Satan
The other version runs:
Sanquis Vivimus, Corpus venimus
Prode Cantus Satani
Blood, we are alive, Body we are coming
Sing forth the incantation of Satan
[There are differing schools of thought as to what the actual Latin text is -one concert version actually exchanged "versus Christus" with "Jesu Christus"!]
Musically powerful and very effective, the score is one of the most original and polished ever written for a film -or the concert hall. It's essentially a chamber piece for small orchestra and mixed chorus, though recent recordings have used larger orchestras and even more varied vocal arrangements.
This newly remastered and restored version is a prized addition to any film music collection.
Nothing more needs to be said except . . ........2007-02-02
. . . this is the most frightening, superlative music ever written for a film.
The Omen Soundtrack.......2006-06-30
Far, far better then the remakes soundtrack. This one still gives me chills up and down my spine! The new one, PU!
The Omen; orchestral score.......2005-10-24
If you are looking for really dark satanic orchestra music, you found it. Lots of choral chanting by deep voices and women vocals too. I loved the score for "Bless the Child" and then I found this. Can not say enough good things about this. The song at the end has vocals and was not used in the movie. It sucks, but it is thankfully the last track so in no way should that stop you from buying this score
Hauntingly Chilling, and Perfectly Composed.......2004-08-10
I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith, but the undeniably most impactive score that I've ever heard under his name is this CD.
The 1976 success of Richard Donner's masterpeice is without a doubt 86% due to Jerry Goldsmith's requiem-stylized suites.
The tracks that stand out in this lister's brain are "Ave Satani," (once you hear in on the movie track, it will be instantly engraved in your mind.) "The Dog's Attack," enormously beacuse, when I hear it, my mood changes--as does with any music I listen to) and, course, who can forget the pressing motif in "the Altar" (I love it, and so will you.)
So, if your looking to listen to a killer score that will blow you out of your seat, slip this sweet little CD in and prepare yutrself for this beautifully remastered 25th Anniversary Edition of Jerry Goldsmith score to one of the most memmorable films of our time--THE OMEN

Scared The Hell Out Of Me The First Time I Heard It
6. Don't Let Him - 7/10
Another slow instrumental that picks up.....a variation on the opening theme it has the same piano keys
7. The Piper Dreams - 10/10
Very cool version. Originally titled 'The New Ambassador' Jerry Goldsmith recorded two versions for this CD. This version is by far my favourite
8. The Fall -8/10
I think this is the scene where Damien rides his bicycle into the table and Lee Remick falls over the railing.
9. Safari Park - 8/10
Even the animals turn away at sight of Damien
10. The Dog's Attack - 8/10
The Graveyard Scene. Perfect track starts low and slowly builds up as the Dogs begin the chase.
11. The Homecoming - 9/10
Has a bit of that Back To The Future touch to it at the beginning very cool.
12. The Altar
The end of the movie. Who won? Good? or Evil? You decide.
One thing is for sure. This CD is definitely a winner
Hail Goldsmith!.......2001-10-27
This reissue of the original soundtrack release is missing a great deal of the score, so it only gives the listener an idea of what Goldsmith did for the film. Nonetheless the score is justified in its Academy Award win (although Goldsmith himself dismissed the thought of even getting a nomination for work on a "horror show"), and is the respected composer's only one to date (now that is a crime). Dark, haunting, frightening, and only lightened with soft tones on a few of the spare tracks, this version may become the odd disc out now that a Deluxe Edition has been released, but collectors and Goldsmith addicts may want it anyway. An essential score to have in any score library.

"I hear voices.".......2001-06-22
Words of Jerry Goldsmith while writing the score, and the perfect thought it was. This is my second Goldsmith score after The Secret of N.I.M.H. It took me a while to get this soundtrack, but after seeing the movie four times then I couldn't resist. My favorite tracks are 3, 5, 8, and 10. There the ones with the most tension in the music. I was dissapointed about one thing though. The soundtrack didn't have the music of when Damien flips out just from the sight of the church. That music was one of the best parts in the film. A soundtrack I'm also trying to get by Jerry is Psycho II, but it's impossible to find. Jerry makes some of the best horror music ever. It's sad that he hasn't gotten more academy awards instead of just one for this score. Lionel Newman brings out all the tempoes just right in the music that it almost sounds like Jerry is conducting. I hope someday they give a full version of the score.
Good horror music.......2001-01-20
The Soundtrack is really good. The music reminds you of the horror moments in the movie. A different kinda soundtrack to have in your collection

This is act III of the Omen Opera........2006-06-05
What everyone needs to do is forget any of the so-called operatic works of Verdi, Puccini, and all the others because this Opera of the Omen series is the best and only Opera fit for the Opera House.
This Opera contains three acts. The first act is about the birth of the Antichrist. The second is about the Antichrist grown up as a teenager. Now, we are on the final act of this Opera which is about the defeat of the Antichrist. This album of the third and final act is absolutely amazing. Songs like "Statue, "666," "Blooding Reel," "Second Coming" and "Final Conflict are great examples of diabollical pieces of music that gives ominous hints of what the musical future has for mankind. This music is fit for Opera Houses everywhere around the world. If you want the entire Opera of the Omen, then buy the box set. Enjoy it(...) if you dare.
Overlooked gem from Goldsmith.......2006-04-07
For my money, "The Omen" trilogy has the most fascinating progression of styles I have heard in soundtracks for a movie series. The first one bagged the Oscar and provided the gothic power of that energized that movie. The second one has a beating rawness combined with an electronic edge. But number three--"The Final Conflict" in my opinion tops not only the series, but is one of Goldsmith's best works.
This soundtrack continues to portray the ominous evil this series is about, but in a completely different style from the others. Unlike the choral and electronic driven entries before, Goldsmith really lets the whole orchestra loose here. In addition the movie allows him to balance the portrayal of the ultimate evil with the ultimate good...and the contrast makes for some great listening.
My favorite tracks: the "Main Title", and the absolutely outstanding "The Hunt". "The Second Coming" is riveting as well.
It's a shame the music was attached to a mediocre movie. It's not likely this soundtrack will get the attention of the Goldmith has received on "Star Trek" or even the first "Omen". Varese Sarabande has done a terrific job with this release however, and this remains an underrated score that deserves more attention.
Best Music by Academy Award Winner Jerry Goldsmith!.......2005-03-03
I think this one is the best Music Soundtrack ever by Academy Award Winner Jerry Goldsmith ever since he did Music to The Final Conflict. I mean the first Music Soundtrack is about The Birth of the AntiChrist, The Other one was when he grew up as a Teen. and The Third one is about the fall of the Antichrist. But If you want to listen to the Music to any of The Omen Trilogy listen to this one instead.
Slightly different than the first two!.......2004-12-12
Each of Goldsmith's soundtracks to the films in "The Omen" trilogy was uniquely constructed to reflect the on-screen horrors that it accompanied. The first was a masterpiece that turned religious scores upside down, deservedly winning Goldsmith his only Oscar.
The score to "Damien: Omen II" took the first to its next phase by assaulting the senses full throttle with the driving demonic chorus from the first but at an accelerated and more frenzied pace.
Finally, the third score hints at the past two but is more traditional in its approach, signifying the story line's defeat of the Anti-Christ.
This deluxe version, like the ones for the preceding films, offers cuts not found on the original LP release.
And, in light of this year's death of the great Goldsmith, it is fitting testament to his place as one of the cinema's most prolific and gifted composers.
One of the great film scores.......2003-09-07
Simply put, a towering achievement.
What is it about film composers of Jerry Goldsmith's stature that their music so often transcends the material it was written for? I guess that's why the word "genius" was invented.
The sound is a vast improvement over the original release, as is the inclusion of new material.
This is Jerry Goldsmith at the absolute pinnacle of his art. Complex, melodic, challenging, and emotionally overwhelming.

No conflict here, the score is pure gold........2001-10-27
Odd as it might seem, The Final Conflict was the first and only film in the Omen trilogy were Damien Thorn himself was the main character and focus of the film's plot. The first two films in the trilogy were primarily focused on other characters becoming aware of just who and what Damien was. This subtle shift in narrative focus allowed Jerry Goldsmith the opportunity to create an entirely new theme for the Anti-Christ. This majestic and foreboding sounding theme appears in nearly all the tracks. Just as Damien's plans and personality influence the people and events around him, so his theme interpolates into the underlying music that serves as a background for the drama. This is a truly majestic score, one that no Jerry Goldsmith fan should be without. Shame on the Academy for overlooking Mr. Goldsmith's wonderful contribution to this film.
The final climax!.......2001-06-19
first of all, excuse my bad english. i'm german and it's long ago, that i could improve my language abilities. "the final conflict" is definetely one of the best scores jerry goldsmith ever has composed and it's the best of his "omen-trilogy. sometimes you think, he wrote classical music. the main title is better than "ave satani" (!). there are pieces sounding exactly like music from the 15. century with a dark, morbid and elegant touch. "the hunt" is simply brilliant and evokes old hunts from victorian england of the last century.
this score is a must have!
greetings from germany!
"Sam Neill as Damien...Goldsmith's thrilling gothic score".......2001-05-30
Director Graham Baker and Richard Donner (one of the producers), gives us something to dream about (nightmares), in this last chapter of the Omen Trilogy ~ "The Final Conflict". Sam Neill delivers a commanding performance as Damien (Satan's spawn), but none of this would have the same effect, without a spine tingling score from Jerry Goldsmith, a stroke of terror is introduced.
Goldsmith who gave us the first two "The Omen" (1976) and "Damien:Omen II" (1978), each time a chilling, thrilling and gothic score with blending of full chorus. This time our favorite composer gives us the full treatment ~ leaving no note unturned ~ featuring tubular bells, electronic keyboard, haunting strings and counter-balanced brass. Could not see any other composer at the helm, knowing Goldsmith's past accomplishments.
May I mention the stand outs ~ "MAIN TITLE", sets the mood ~ "ELECTRIC STORM", is simply the highlight ~ "THE FINAL CONFLICT", paints each cue on a musical canvas, with streaks of horror and cold chills thrown in.
Hats off to ~ The National Philarmonic Orchestra, Lionel Newman (conductor), Robert Townson (executive producer) and our host, composer and producer, who has many "film-score-buff" followers ~ JERRY GOLDSMITH!
Total Time: 48:26 on 13 Tracks ~ Varese Sarabande VSD-5282 ~ (1981)
Hail, Damian.......2000-08-31
I like this music because it's interesting music. I like the way Jerry Goldsmith used the "evil choir" to make it spooky and ominous. Listening to this music makes me feel like Damian is waiting around the corner to come get me. Jerry Goldsmith is a master composer and this CD is an example of his unique style.
The Final Score.......2000-05-01
This score is a monumental piece of work that is right up there with the great biblical epic scores by Miklos Rosza and others. Unfourtunately, the movie itself was nowhere near as compelling as the music. I have to say that of all Jerry Goldsmith movie scores, and I have heard almost all of them(there are over 170), THE FINAL CONFLICT is my personal favorite. This score is different than the first two Omens(the first Omen won the best score Oscar). CONFLICT is bigger in scale than the first two and contains all new themes including a driving horn theme for the evil Damien and a beautiful pastoral theme representing the forces of good. The score still contains some of the same kind of unsettling choral music from the first two films. The CD itself could be better but I shouldn't complain for I'm grateful it is available on CD. It is long enough at 50 minutes and captures all the highlights of the score. The best tracks are "Main Title","Trial Run","The Monastery","The Second Coming","The Hunt","The Blooding Reel", and "The Final Conflict" which underscores no less than the second coming of Christ. There is only one good piece of music toward the end of the movie that I think should have been included on the CD. The sound quality isn't the best but this album is still worthy of 5 stars. Buy this!
