Take one measure each of The Hill Have Eyes and Deliverance, toss with a little modern Joy Ride sensibility and you might end up with something approaching director Rob Schmidt's contemporary teen horror-thriller. Czech-born composer Elia Cmiral has carved himself a neat niche in the supernatural/horror genres since Stigmata, fueling his score here with a familiar, but effective cocktail of edgy 20th century orchestral modernism, cut with some bracing post-modern brio. Punctuating proceedings with silences and the instrumental equivalents of murmurs and whispers, the composer shows his mastery of the not always compatible facets of dynamics and tension to good effect throughout, using some deceptive pastoralism and a few dashes of what sounds like hillbilly baroque as a launching pad for his percussive thumps, string-powered creepery and brassy jolts. --Jerry McCulley

A great score to a simple, primal film........2003-06-22
Cmiral takes nothing for a budget and turns it into a texturally rich score from organic sounds, instruments and synth music. As the film careens through a multitude of dangerous and thrilling situations, the score never lets up. By far my favorite tracks are "Wrong Turn Title", "Mountain Men" (absolutely spectacular action scoring), "Killing Mountain Men" and "Three-Finger is Back".
The only fault I can think of is that the more relaxed moments in the score feel a little too relaxed... it becomes almost inappropriate, given the rest of the film (and music). But past that, this is a great piece of work from a talented composer.
