After the surprise success of 1962's Dr. No, the producers of the budding James Bond series began to establish what would become its trademark elements, with its debonair anti-hero frolicking libidinously through increasingly amped-up foreign intrigue and exotic locales. Musically, this soundtrack represents perhaps their most crucial decision: hiring band leader/budding composer John Barry as scorer. Abandoning the first film's calypso kitsch for an orchestra powered cocktail of elegance and jazzy sophistication, Barry immediately gave the Bond saga a focused musical language that would become arguably its most consistent element over the decades and amidst a revolving series of lead actors and increasingly improbable cinematic predicaments. While anchored by a medley that includes Monty Norman's "James Bond Theme," this soundtrack also introduced another longstanding Bond tradition, the pop-ballad title track/single, here penned by Lionel Bart and sung with urgent conviction by British crooner Matt Munro. This digitally remastered new edition features new liner notes, as well as artwork and stills from the film. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Barry's first - incredible.......2007-01-19

Well, what can you say that hasn't already been exclamated? Barry's score for FRWL is, of course, brilliant. Very creative use of eastern/oriental influences that blends effectively with 1960's orchestral sensibilities. The score is extremely dynamic without being overbearing. Barry does a great job of establishing main themes without resorting to predictable embellishments. Personal favourites include the main 007 theme(obviously), "Tanya meets Klebb", and "Spectre Island and Smersh" (classic 1960's Bond suspense). All the bongo parts and rhythmic ostinatos work fantastically well! Listen to pieces like "Girl Trouble", there's some extremely well-crafted and sophisticated exotic motifs there, superimposed over driving syncopated rhythms. We also find a lot of vibraphone/string unisons (my favourite combo) and of course, great brass parts. And let's not forget the solid title theme, beautifully rendered by british vocalist Matt Munro in classic Sinatra style. Munro really set the standard for future title themes. The recording is great, just the right balance between ambience and that nice analog grit that you find on so many 60's orchestral recordings. Some of today's soundtrack composers would do well to take a few lessons from the old masters - you rarely hear music of this dynamic range anymore, which is a real shame considering todays technology and the potential for dynamic range, noise floor levels and soundstage fidelity. But that's the way it usually goes, isnt it? I'm usually more partial towards the Barry's 1970's work and some of the 80s Bond soundtracks like Bill Contis amazing work on FYEO, but when it comes to the true masters and genre milestones, look no further that John Barry and FRWL.

5 out of 5 stars Chronological order.......2006-11-20

Barry's first Bond score is, of course, brilliant. If you want to listen to it in film order, as I do, here's how to re-order the CD:

15, 1, 11, 2, 14, 16, First 1:00 of 9, 5, 7, 12, 8, 6, 3, 4, 18, 17, Second 1:00 of 9, 13, 10.

If you can't split up track 9, put it at the second spot. Also, tracks 4 and 12 do not appear in the actual film, but the positions are where Barry intended these cues to go.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Soundtrack!! Great Remaster!!.......2006-03-04

This is really a remarkable soundtrack and the remastered sound is phenomenal!! To me this is where the music for the James Bond movies really began to take shape. There are themes developed here that have continued throughout the series of films. Great stuff, highly recommend!

5 out of 5 stars The best of the series.......2006-01-12

Inventive, tuneful and just pleasant to listen to musical backdrop to what many, including me, believe to be the best of the Bond film series before they got so carried away with gadgets and world domination themes. John Barry is on top of his game really developing what musically becomes the Bond legacy. And best of all, the album stands well on its own as a listening expereince. When the track "007" begins it's like meeting an old friend. You've heard it before, but it's good to hear again.
Heartily recommend!

5 out of 5 stars Incomparable James Bond Soundtrack.......2005-01-21

FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE is a no-nonsense Bond film in the tradition of the Ian Fleming novels. The FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE soundtrack is an example of exceptional film scoring and a very satisfying album drawing on all the elements of the film's score to deliver an experience that musically runs the gamut of rhythm, romance, intrigue and flavorful vignettes of the film's locale that seems to go in tandem with Fleming's literary sense for these elements. John Barry began his "official" scoring duties in tandem with his screen credit on FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE bringing a highly recognizable and definitive substantiating sound to the Bond series that distinguished it with his unique and inimitable musical style. That has been a hallmark, which brings a cohesive quality to the whole series even in Barry's absence. John Barry not only firmly incorporated his prowess as a film composer with this soundtrack but also demonstrated his ability to establish his own unique sound on compositions composed by others. "From Russia With Love" from track 1 and "Bond Meets Tania" from track 6, with a melody composed by Lionel Bart, inimitably have that "Barry Sound" stamped on them. Once again Barry also demonstrated his unique musical handling of "The James Bond Theme" on track 14 with "James Bond With Bongos" while his "007 Theme" heard on tracks 7 and 18 bring a staccato and drive to the force of this James Bond classic. The re-mastering is good eliminating much of the background tape hiss. This recording sounds very good.

1 out of 5 stars Bad. Nowhere on the cover does it say it is..........2006-12-25

a compilation of instrumentals. I will be attempting to return it tomorrow.

3 out of 5 stars Second Choice.......2006-07-26

This set was purchased along with "The Best of Bond . . . James Bond" which is a single CD. Given the opportunity to preview both of them before purchase, I would have passed on this one in favor of the other. Disc two contains three radio spots and one demo version of "You Only Live Twice". Space between songs doesn't exist which is a big minus for me.

3 out of 5 stars Not what I thought it was.......2005-09-17

I bought this product thinking and believing it was vocals of the James Bond themes. Instead, it was instrumentals and while they are nice, they are not themes that are tremendously well done.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy if you are looking for original tunes.......2005-08-06

Beware of deals that are too good. I bought the CD thinking it was some of the original theme songs from the Bond movies. The title of the CD is, afterall, "40 Years of James Bond: 20 Themes" It SHOULD have been named: "20 songs BASED UPON 40 years of James Bond." I was highly disappointed that this is just all orchestral music and synthesizers. And not even great quality at that. Oh well, live and learn.

1 out of 5 stars Don't buy!!!.......2005-06-25

I don't like orcestra music i just like the original so i thought it was terrible! I wondered why the price was so cheap when i bought it. guess what i returned it the next day!

5 out of 5 stars THE ESSENTIAL JAMES BOND.......2006-03-13

LOVE THIS COLLECTION OF JAMES BOND THEMES. WAS WORRIED WHEN ORDERING BECAUSE I DIDN'T KNOW FOR SURE IF IT WAS REALLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR, BUT AFTER RECEIVING IT, I WAS NOT DISAPPOINTED BECAUSE IT WAS EVERYTHING I HOPED IT WOULD BE!!!

4 out of 5 stars Elegance and Oomph !.......2004-04-11

John Barry's pal and favourite orchestrator, Nic Raine faithfully leads the Prague Philharmonic through a beautiful and passionate rendition of the Bond repertoire. The playing is excellent, with an emphasis on the romantic myth of the secret agent and the recording quality brings out dynamics you can feel through the floor. The Australian Silva release is superb HDCD with Dolby Surround. The classic "Bond Theme" and "Goldfinger" sound wonderful. The standout track is the "On Her Majesty's Secret Service/A View To A Kill" suite , with its poignant cues amid the heart-thumping action music. Often overlooked is "We Have All The Time In The World" which is played sweetly here. Even the lesser Bond themes are given a nice treatment.
Note there is no singing , just the orchestra.
A mixture of dangerous sonic fireworks and lovely tender bits, just like a Bond Girl !

4 out of 5 stars Solid Interpretations with Homage to Appropriate Films.......2003-12-08

The first half of this collection is exquisite. The interpretations are faithful and fanciful. We could have used a guitar version of Monty Norman's theme in addition to the full orchestral treatment here, but I wouldn't have left the orchestral version off. Its just too good.

The collection pays homage to two films in particular, which are noted by Bond fans around the globe as being particularly significant. "From Russia with Love" is honored with two songs, the lush title track, rife with Eastern European flavor, and the "007" theme from that film which would come to dominate the action sequences for the next ten installments in the series. This song is actually the reason I asked for this collection for Christmas last year.

The other film that gets double treatment is "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", which is often noted as having the best soundtrack of the series (I disagree...the aforementioned FRwL is handsdown the best). You get its title track, matched elegantly with that of "From a View to a Kill," and an instrumental version of Louie Armstrong's "All the Time in the World".

The set starts to sputter toward the end, as Barry's compositions did. The last treat is the playful "Man with the Golden Gun" romp. Fun music, dreadful film.

This is a great sampler of the Bond scores. Don't expect Duran Duran, aha, or Sheena Easton here...its INSTRUMENTAL! And listening to it is instrumental to understanding the series.

Great stuff...

5 out of 5 stars long live 007.......2003-02-28

This cd has the instrumental scores from the James Bond movies. As I was watching a movie marathon recently, I started to pay attention to the background music. The movie themes are very soothing and evocative. I ordered this cd because it does not contain the "hit" vocal recordings, and have not been disappointed. I was surprised at how many memories I had associated with the various theme songs of the movies. 007 has been around for a long time! I use it as background music at work, among other things.

5 out of 5 stars So true to the movie versions...........2002-11-08

The only thing missing are the VOCALS.

These instrumental renditions of the oh-so-familiar opening themes from the first seventeen Bond films are exemplary in their execution. Each meticulously arranged tune brings to mind the artists whose voices are heard accompanying the orchestral strains.

As the twentieth film in the series awaits its release, this compilation serves as a fine reminder of why Bond music has been such a part of pop culture for four decades.

4 out of 5 stars A great idea, but incomplete.......2000-10-26

Erich Kunzel plays the Bond themes? What a great idea! In addition, there are a few more selections in the same vein, like the cops-n-robbers TV medley, music from The Untouchables, Lethal Weapon, Beverly Hills Cop, etc.

Sometimes, you want to listen to the 007 music in instrumental only, and Kunzel and the Cincinatti Pops do a good job with the arrangements. But where are the rest of the songs? Missing are three of my all-time favorites, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever, and Moonraker. I think the album would be better with 'more Bond, less other.' We certainly don't need TWO selections from Dick Tracy. And the theme from Darkman is stylistically quite similar to Dick Tracy; nothing is gained by playing both. Don't get me wrong; I like Danny Elfman (check out his "Beetlejuice" theme on Kunzel's 'Great Fantasy Adventure Album'). I just wanted to hear all my fave Bond pieces on the one CD.

Still, it's a keeper.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2006-10-24

This is a re-issue of ASIN B00006JTGH with five additional tracks, and improved packaging!

The first three discs are identical to the previous release, while the fourth disc has five additiional tracks performed by the City of Prague Philharmonic conducted by James Fitzpatrick. The new tracks are from Die Another Day (two tracks: title song, and "Going Down Together"), as well as three tracks from the unofficial Bond films, the theme from Michel Legrand's Never Say Never Again, and two tracks from Burt Bacharach's Casino Royale.

Everything is performed wonderfully by the City of Prague Philharmonic conducted by Nic Raine and James Fitzpatrick, and electronic percussion added to the necessary tracks by Gareth Williams and Mark Ayres.

The "James Bond theme" even features the famed Vic Flick on guitar!

Until Silva updates this in time for the NEXT film, this is the definitive James Bond set!

Kudos to producer James Fitzpatrick, Engineers John Luard Timperley and Mike Ross-Trevor for making this spectacular release happen.

3 out of 5 stars songs not by original artists.......2007-02-11

a good collection of Bond film themes, but be advised that the lyrics are NOT by the original artists.

1 out of 5 stars Actually gets zero stars........2005-04-16

This is dreadfully horrible. All the songs have been edited and are now being sang by new artists you've never heard of. Truly horrible because I just wanted the old songs. Stick with the "Best of Bond" album, because this is awful.

2 out of 5 stars not horrible..........2005-04-02

This CD would seem fantastic, featuring all of the James Bond title songs. The only problem is that they are not the original songs (sung by Shirley Bassey, etc.). They are bad quality remakes with singers I've never even heard of. But the second disc makes up for it with acceptable instrumental versions of the famous songs. Worth buying? That's up to you, if you want the original songs or not.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer beware.......2007-05-26

When they don't list the ARTIST by the track listing, we should know that they didn't go to the effort (or money) to get the real artists. This happens FREQUENTLY on 'collection' CD's.

1 out of 5 stars This Album Is Bogus!.......2007-01-11

I bought this album under the impression that this was all the Bond themes from the movies sung by the original singers who made the songs famous. Not even close! The singers used to "interpret" the songs are unknowns and the album is a giant rip-off. It should have been stated quite clearly in the description that these were not the original singers. Do not buy this album if you are looking for the original recording artists!
