Just like the Fox TV show it's taken from, Music from the O.C.: Mix 1 is studded with moments of subtle exceptionality until the end, when things get really good. Hard as it is to discount the haunting beauty of Joseph Arthur's "Honey and the Moon," the crispness of Spoon's spunky, handclap- and piano-spiked "The Way We Get By," and the hushed cool of Jem's bouncy "It's Just a Ride," this CD heats to its steamiest in the final four tracks. The Dandy Warhols cut through the Beatlesque rapture brought on by the 88s' "How Good it Can Be" with the snarky, self-conscious pop of "We Used to Be Friends"; William Orbit helps Finley Quaye free himself from the feel-good constraints of reggae on the dark, obsession-themed "Dice"; Alexi Murdoch drags the mood down farther still with the sung poetry of "Orange Sky"; and Phantom Planet ends things on a satisfying but quizzically simple note with "California," the show's theme song. Whether The O.C.'s target audience--teenagers--matches the disc's may be beside the point: Because Mix 1 is enhanced with scenes from the show, computer-equipped diehards who prefer their pop fluffier, with less indie attitude, will dig the vibe despite themselves. -Tammy La Gorce
Album Description
One of the most innovative soundtrack album series ever created launches with Music From The O.C. Mix 1. Featuring hip, recent, largely indie rock tracks heard on the FOX runaway hit sensation "The O.C.," the album is the first of several (at least one each 2004 quarter) designed to appeal to the 9 million to 11 million mainly teen and young adult fans who watch the drama each Wednesday night. The hottest show on TV with the hottest music on TV now has its own album series.
Customer Reviews:
season one - worthwhile.......2006-12-12
For all of the seasons i've listened to, and i admit, i'm not a big fan of the show but rather, a music critic and write a music column, i found this season's list to be the most interesting. Which is NOT to say that there are not other songs to be found on other seasons (so please, scope them out, because songs like "If You Leave" is truly worthwhile).
Still, you can't beat the list here - there is so much good, and so much that, at the time (and this is important to remember) was new (or new to the public; yes, you may have known it, just as i may have known it but i would guess that most viewers did not know Jet or Propellerheads by then, so you have to credit the OC with bringing these groups to the forefront).
It's hard. One feels torn about that always - It reminds me of when I liked the Replacements and nobody else did or even knew them and then the Pleased to Meet Me album came out and the song "Alex Chilton" and suddenly they were HUGE and everybody was a Replacements fan and I felt like, "Hey, i've been here all along...!"
That is a wholly selfish view; we should want bands we like to be successful and to do well. It's not selling out, no more than i think Dylan is selling out by doing IPod commercials. Groups, like any other worker or industry, have to look at the bottomline. They never claimed NOT to be commercial, and that's key. I don't see this as selling out then on their part, as some would, but as a smart and strategic career move for the many people who do watch the OC, and while i can't say that i've ever seen a single episode, it's not because i don't like the show (how could i judge? i've never seen!) it's that i know the music already and can judge on the basis of that - so the OC may have been a bit behind the times but hey, they caught up and the compilations are among the best out there for any television series.
Just my two cents for what it's worth. I'd buy this album. I did. It's worth it. Almost every song is good... and check out the other OC albums as well... there is much to be found.
Thanks for listening,
sadi ranson-polizzotti
A Great Change.......2006-08-01
This is an excellent CD and the best of the OC soundtracks. The music is all very good and has an upbeat optismtic feel to it. The songs on this CD aren't ones you hear everyday played on the radio over and over. This is a refreshing collection of excellent music that anyone can enjoy, whether you are a fan of the show or not!
very happy.......2006-01-25
I love the OC and one of the reasons I do is because of all the music in it. All of the songs are so catchy and I end up singing them the whole day. In the first season, I watch the Music Guide hoping to find a song I like and usually I do...until the soundtrack came out. I bought it immediantly and now I listen to it every day. It has all of my favorite songs from the OC on it, but I wish they included the songs "out of Control" by the Chemical Brothers (its from the escape when marissa catches luke with holly) and also the song "into dust" when ryan is holding marissa in his arms at the end of the escape. Other than that, this album is definately worth buying!
Music from the O.C. Mix 1.......2005-11-03
I love this CD! No matter who you are or what your background is, even if you've never even watched the O.C. (unheard of, but possible) you will fall head over heals in love with the soundtrack. Each song, from artists like the Dandy Warhols and Jem, will impress you over and over again. This CD is a must-have for anyone who likes alt-rock type music. Overall, this CD is worth quadruple what you paid for it!
word...life.......2005-10-04
A hip hop classic. I've been listening to this since high school and it's still as tight as Illmatic. Three billion thumbs up.

If this CD were to be put in a time capsule to be opened in a hundred years, it would give musicologists of the future a pretty fair idea of commercial-minded pop circa 2005. Rarely has a TV show so captured a certain musical zeitgeist as well as The OC has, to the point that the series has become one of the best ways for smallish bands to break through. Collecting songs that have appeared in seasons 2 and 3, this CD is remarkably consistent in its aesthetics: Obviously in 2005 cool kids have been listening to a lot of very danceable rock and pop (Kasabian's "Reason Is Treason," LCD Soundsystem's "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House," Gorillaz's "Kids With Guns," Kaiser Chiefs' "Na Na Na Na Naah") tempered by a smiden of articulate, sensitive songwriting (Shout-Out Louds' "Wish I Was Dead Pt. 2," Stars' "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead"). The tracks here aren't innovative, but they are remarkably easy to like--even love. The real gems are actually tucked in at the end of the album: Phantom Planet's wistful reworking of the show's theme song, "California 2005," and Imogen Heap's dreamy, Vocoderized Kate Bush-like "Hide and Seek." --Elisabeth Vincentelli
Album Description
For the first time in its unprecedented and now five-album series, Music from the O.C. will be catapulted by the first on-show performance that is also the track to radio from a Music From the O.C. album. With The Subways' "Rock & Roll Queen" leading the way, alongside new and recent tracks from such cutting edge artists as the Shout Out Louds, Imogen Heap, LCD Soundsystem and Phantom Planet, Music from the O.C.: Mix 5 is a smart, sharp, indie-alt-modern rock from what is the musically hippest show on TV.

the beginning of the downfall.......2007-04-07
The first 3 "OC" mixes (1,2, and 4, i don't count the christmas one) were all brilliant soundtracks filled with just a small fraction of the music featured on the show. Although I didn't always agree with the song choices as the best from the show, it was very rare when I disliked one of them. The same does not hold true with "Mix 5", which features at least 3 bad songs, several others that are rather mediocre, and very few tracks that I can clearly recall from the show. This is perhaps because with the 3rd season of "The OC", the writing became less memorable, and I suppose with it, so did the songs. Budget for music was also obviously decreased from the second season, as the number of bands that performed on the show dropped from half a dozen to one or two.
The disc opens with "Rock & Roll Queen" by The Subways (one of the only bands to perform during the season) and Kasabian's "Reason Is Treason", a pair of upbeat songs, both of which are good but not great. "Rock & Roll Queen" declines into an irritating screaming finale, but is still remarkably catchy, but "Reason Is Treason" wears thin rather quickly. "Wish I Was Dead Pt. 2" by the Shout Out Louds is a slightly better acoustic song with an instantly memorable chorus.
"Daft Punk Is Playing At My House" by LCD soundsystem is absolutely excrutiating, involving no singing or musicality whatsoever, and "Kids With Guns" from the gorillaz is no better. "Requiem For O.M.M." by Of Montreal, is slightly better, but no less irritating and sickly boring.
But within these throwaway tracks there is still hidden some true gems. Rogue Wave's publish my love is brilliant indie-pop, and Youth Group's cover of "Forever Young" is simply gorgeous, marking itself as a true "OC" staple. The end of the album is a true tour-de-force, made up of 4 great tracks. The Kaiser Chief's offer up "Na Na Na Na Naa", which despite its nonsense lyrics is the exact brand of indie rock that made "The OC" famous in the first place. Phantom Planet's acoustic take on their theme song with "California 2005" was the first memorable song to be played in season 3 and therefore deserves a place here.
The other two tracks are some of the most brilliant on the album. Stars' "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead" is a gorgeous indie ballad marked by excellent lyrics and beautiful vocal harmonies from the two singers (one male one female). The soundtrack closes as it should with Imogen Heap's epic "Hide & Seek", one of the most memorable songs ever played on "The OC" from the shocking season 2 finale, this one truly belongs in "The OC" hall of fame. Since it was used on the show, the song has become very well known for its tight nit vocal arrangement. One listen will reveal why this song is so well loved among fans: because it sounds like nothing else you've ever heard of, something only "The OC" could introduce.
In the end, the album is saved by the strength of its second half (with the help of a few tracks from the first). The highlights manage to overcome the low points to create what was the last good "OC" soundtrack. It may be one of the weakest, but it still contains some must hear gems.
Many good songs.......2007-01-12
"Forever Young", "Rock & Roll Queen" and "Hide and Seek" are my favourite songs.
Not your regular TV Series Soundtrack! .......2006-03-04
I love watching the show and love even more that I can listen to the music anytime I want. I was watching some special features from the first season and they had this 'music of the oc' feature; and what I really like about the music selection process is that it's selected based on the emotions and feelings of a particular scene, not just whats on the 'pop charts' at the moment and who wants to pay out tv show to have it aired even though it has nothing to do with the scene! The OC music really connects you with the show and it's a CD that you won't just listen to for a few weeks and put away.
Just like the show..........2006-01-14
Reflecting the show upon which these mixes hail from, The OC: Mix 5 has completely strayed from what these CDs once were. This album is inconsistently decent at its best. It's a real shame because I had very high hopes for this one, since the only two tracks I went in knowing were Youth Group's "Forever Young" and Phantom Planet's "California 2005," both of which are amazing songs, but can be purchased on iTunes for less than a dollar apiece. "Rock and Roll Queen" by The Subways is a good enough opening track; it's quite catchy. However, tracks 2-5 all fall flat and are highly uninteresting. I'd say the worst is "Publish My Love" by Rogue Wave, which sounds like a bad U2 cover of some sort. "Kids With Guns" is a pretty good track, but only for those of us who are Gorillaz fans. It wouldn't be surprising for the average listener to dismiss this as a boring track. Simply put, the first (nearly) half of this CD is garbage. The second half, from track 6 onward, is pretty good, but it's still not the mix 1-4 were. I can spin the first four mixes all night long. I'm gonna find myself reaching past this one on the stack whenever I feel the need to listen to an OC soundtrack.
Not "Right Back Where We Started From".......2006-01-05
As a big fan of the OC & its subsequent soundtracks - I'm sad to say that the show has gone downhill a bit since its first season. Does that mean the soundtracks have as well? Well in this case - a little bit, but it's not exactly the music director's fault. The best part of the first mix of the OC, and even the second, was that the songs represented key moments of the show - where the song & scene were so memorable the two were forever tied in your mind (ex: South's Paint the Silence is Marissa & Ryan's first kiss song). As the show gets less memorable - so do the songs, but that doesn't mean this isn't a great album regardless.
If you're going for a bit of a rocker vibe, then tune into one of the best songs on the album, The Subways ultra-catchy "Rock and Roll Queen". Kasabian's "Reason is Treason" provides a good follow-up, while the Kaiser Chiefs track is a good mid-album rock break. For a more alternative indie vibe, tune into the dreamy "Wish I Was Dead" or the soaring "Publish My Love".
Every soundtrack has a few songs that maybe aren't quite as great, and this album is no exception. "Daft Punk is Playing at my House" goes on wayyyy too long, despite it's catchy beat, and quickly grows tired. For a better funky alternative listen to the wicked track by the Gorillaz, "Kids with Guns". Youth Group's "Forever Young" is just kind of cheesy - and correct me if I'm wrong but featured in Napoleon Dynamite? It just doesn't suit. "Requiem for Omm" is a Beatles take-off, but it's a sound that's been beat into the ground.
The stand-outs? Probably the last three tracks. Stars "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" is an awesome string-arranged duet, and although I don't remember the scene I had downloaded it ages ago when it aired on an episode cause I liked the song. "California 2005" was of course featured in one of the first episodes of Season 3, when Ryan and Marissa get kicked out of Harbour at the Kick-Off Carnival, and features a cool new take on an old favourite (the theme song). Finally Imogen Heap's awesome dream-like synthesized song "Hide and Seek" provides a nice round-up to the end of the album. Many of you might remember it as the track playing during Caleb's funeral at the end of Season 2.
All in all a good mix - not as strong as the others, but a must-have for any OC fan, or anyone looking to discover some new fave artists.

Album Description
"A showcase for new music that's fallen under the mainstream radar." ("All Things Considered," NPR, April 24, 2004) Musically the hippest show on TV, "The O.C." spawns the edgiest album yet from the unprecedented Music From The O.C. series. Headlining Mix 4 is a new song from alt-rock superstar Beck, "Scarecrow," co-written and co-produced with The Dust Brothers, and "Decent Days And Nights" from post-punk pop's The Futureheads. Two other tracks also debutchamber-pop quintet Matt Pond PA unveils its cover of "Champagne Supernova," the mid-'90s #1 Modern Rocker from Oasis, and ethereal alt-rocker Imogen Heap (half of the band Frou Frou) offers "Goodnight And Go." Music From The O.C.: Mix 4 is as sharp as Marissa and as cool as Seth.

its ok.......2006-11-20
its a good CD if you like indie music!
if you like the OC soundtracks, you should definately check out the One tree hill soundtracks...even if you dont watch the show, they have a perfect mix of indie and some more popular bands songs (plus Vol.2 donates some of the proceeds from the purchase to womens breast cancer research)!
all in all 3/5
Wheezer?.......2006-07-15
Is there any OC mix that has Wheezer's song Beverly Hills on it? I could have sworn that the OC mix 4 had that song????!! I was going to buy it b/c of that song!
Once again. The Kids Are Alright.......2006-01-26
I don't watch the O.C. I have nothing against it, I just never seem to see it. But I always hear things about how good the music is, so I figured I'd check out this soundtrack.
Awesome. They put the kids in charge. Sufjan Stephens?? Matt Pond PA?? How did the hipsters land that job of Music Supervisor? However they did, we can be grateful.
Lots of times these days, the best place to hear and discover new great music is on TV shows and on Commercials (you know, besides the internet). I don't know when MTV is gonna catch on already!
In the meantime, soundtracks like this will have to pave the way. Next year's season, look out for Apollo Sunshine, School for the Dead, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and the Lucksmiths. I betcha.
GREAT ALBUM.......2006-01-25
This mix was yet another success. But I have to admit, the first one is still the best. I also wish they had the song "The World at Large" by Modest Mouse. They did a great job putting that in when Marissa's dad leaves in episode 2.07 (The Family Ties). Other than that, this is another great album.
Girl OBSESSED with The O.C. This is the best mix EVER!!.......2005-11-22
This mix was yet another succcess. It had many brilliantly performed songs which otherwise would have probably never been heard. I just wish they had "Hide and Seek" by Imogen Heap. That's the only flaw of this mix. Otherwise it had really good songs like "The View" by Modest Mouse and "Champagne Supernova" by matt pond PA. Ur totally gonna luv this mix!!
