Editorial Reviews
From the Label
THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN is widely regarded as one of Hollywood's greatest Westerns. The all-star remake of Akira Kurosawa's classic THE SEVEN SAMURAI in one of the greatest entries in the Western genre and has inspired three sequels and a CBS TV series. Elmer Bernstein's Academy Award®-nominated score includes one of the most recognizable pieces of film music, the rousing "Magnificent Seven Theme." This CD at last makes available the tremendous scope, power and furious energy of Bernstein's score in its first incarnation.

One of the Best !.......2006-07-24
the late Elmer Bernstein was for more than half a century one of Hollywood's leading score composers."The 10 commandment",
"The sweet smell of success""Ghostbusters""True Grit""The Shootist","Big Jake"all came from his imagination...But the score for this film is not only his best, but his most recognisable...
At the time of the original release of this film, some 40 plus years ago, there was no soundtrack album available..Indeed,save for the pop flavored rendition by guitarist Al Caiola, the music for "The Magnificent Seven"would have to wait until only recently to finally be released to the general public as a full-fledged soundtrack album.
A second film"The Return of the Magnificent Seven"incorporated SOME elements of the original score and was released,on the united artists record label, but that second film and the third, and the fourth were not as successful as the first, and sales for the album were disappointing to say the very least.
Later,Bernstein franchised the theme to Lorrilard Tobacco, and the theme from The Magnificent Seven became associated with Marlboro cigarettes, and the western-oriented"Marlboro Man"..A record album was released which included some of the music used in "The Magnificent Seven"under the title"Music From Marlboro Country"...
But this is the score from the film, rightfully released as such.IT is exciting and memorable...One of the great ones.
Not Bad At All.......2004-11-23
The film is a motion picture event to watch if you can.
This soundtrack, however, does not live up to the film's reputation, as it is quite grainy in sound and indistinct in places.
It's not all bad though, as it offers a wide range of tracks from the film, covering every major event.
An essential for the western lover, just watch out for that quality
Buyers beware!!.......2002-06-19
While Elmer Bernstein's music for The Magnificent Seven is one of the finest and most popular films scores ever written, this CD is virtually worthless.
The music is highly distorted and the recording is mono. If you must hear this wonderful music, buy the DVD or the marvelously recorded CD on the Koch Label (brilliantly performed by The Phoenix Symphony under the direction of James Sedares).
The latter was recorded in 1994, and Bernstein himself considers it to be the definitive interpretation of his music.
Great music - bad sound quality.......2001-12-23
The Magnificent Seven by Elmer Bernstein has one of the more famous themes of cinema, coming from the same year that gave us one of the most famous movie-cues ('The Murder' from Psycho by Bernard Herrmann). Both of these, along with Spartacus by Alex North are said to have ushered in the 'Silver Age' in film music.
This score is much more than its well-known theme, however. It packs in just about everything one would expect from a score for a Western/Mexican movie written pre-Morricone: Happy trumpet lines, lots of latin percussian, fanfareing horns, and Spanish guitar motifs -- and mixes them up brilliantly.
There's lots of great themes abound, especially the various "riding" themes. Almost all the way through the score is packed with some kind of forward energy (it's said that Bernstein intentionalally wrote music faster than the action on screen to make the movie seem better paced). Beyond the main theme, I especially like the secondary theme, prominant in 'The Journey', and the wonderful trumpet theme featured in cues such as 'Calvera's Return'. And the final ten minutes or so bring them all together masterfully providing a great climax to a great score.
Unfortunatly, if you buy this album, you must take the bad with the good. This is the ONLY release of the original tracks recorded in 1960, however the sound quality is, quite frankly, painful at times. The hiss is very overbearing in some spots and listening to this on headphones is not the most pleasent experience. It's probably not Ryko's fault, as they were quite capable of producing albums with great sound (see Taras Bulba, a 1962 score). It was long thought that the original tapes were lost, so they likely deteriorated. As a result, I would recommend either of the two re-recordings -- one on the Koch lable, and the other very hard-to-find one the BMG lable (the prior is still buyable, but the latter is a slightly better performance).
So overall, buy this great score in some form, but I recommend a different version than this, unless you are the type who MUST have the original performance.
One of the Best Scores Ever Composed.......2001-10-04
Elmer Bernstein's score for THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN is an innovative and groundbreaking score ringing in a new era for film music. This reissue and expanded recording of the original 1960 United Artists album is an essential CD. There actually was a soundtrack LP pressed for THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN and it did contain an actual United Artists catalog number. However, it was used for promotional use only and never issued for retail sale. This is the first time the original soundtrack has ever been available to the general public. It was worth the wait. Bernstein's main theme for THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN besides being highly recognizable is both rousing and reflective. It is a statement on the nature of bravery and nobility as the seven gunmen go up against innumerable odds for the rights of the downtrodden. The score is pensive yet contains a lot of orchestral movement which not only advances the plot but entices the viewer to become enthralled in the drama. Bernstein utilizes both traditional Western and Mexican orchestral flavor into the score yet rearranges these styles to deliver the adventure, human drama and most importantly asks us by the film's finale to fathom the enigma of bravery and self-sacrifice. This recording is in mono but is one of a handful of soundtracks that I would classify as essential.

Elmer Bernstein's score for The Magnificent Seven, director John Sturges's 1960 recasting of Akira Kurosawa's The Seven Samurai as a Western, is one of the genre's greatest accomplishments--and, ironically, one that was originally overlooked. No soundtrack album was ever issued. In 1966, Bernstein got the rare opportunity to revisit his earlier triumph (whose main theme by then had achieved cultural ubiquity as a cigarette ad) for director Burt Kennedy's modestly budgeted, highly underrated sequel. Bernstein's Coplandesque flourishes are economically revamped to great dramatic effect, his Mexican folk flourishes anticipating Jerry Fielding's score for The Wild Bunch.
Amazingly, this is the first release of Bernstein's remarkable recording of his score on CD. How great is it? The composer received two Academy Award nominations, six years apart, for essentially the same body of music. --Jerry McCulley

RETURN OF THE SEVEN Soundtrack is a Classic.......2000-11-17
Officially this is the soundtrack to the1966 film "RETURN OF THE SEVEN," the sequel to John Sturges' 1960 classic Western, "THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN." Elmer Bernstein's score for "THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN" was innovative and groundbreaking ringing in a new era for film scoring. This is a reissue of the original 1966 United Artists album on compact disc and it sounds very good, excellent! This 1966 recording is very much welcomed. With this recording Elmer Bernstein was able to bolster up the strength and power of the orchestra and Leo Shuken and Jack Hayes improved on the orchestrations. This 1966 recording is dynamically more brilliant compared to the 1960 score. In 1994 maestro James Sedares conducted the most complete digital recording of the 1960 "THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN" score with the Phoenix Symphony. The Sedares recording is excellent, but I find the tempo of Bernstein's 1966 recording to be more accurate. Also, "In the Trap" is not included on the Sedares recording. The only complaint I always had with the 1966 recording is with Track 1 "The Magnificent Seven." The track comes to a definite end as if it were a concert piece. As heard in the actual films, "THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN" and "RETURN OF THE SEVEN," the main title does a smooth transition directly into "Calvera's Visit." The Sedares recording follows the film cue. Unlike with Berstein's 1963 soundtrack "THE GREAT ESCAPE" reissue, I do not care for the dialogue tracks included on the "RETURN OF THE SEVEN" compact disc. There is some excellent dialogue in "RETURN OF THE SEVEN." I saw this film in the theatre in 1966. The audience broke out in applause several times with some of the lines that Yul Brynner had with Warren Oates and Claude Akins. As for Elmer Bernstein's brilliant theme, the tune is immortal, as is this recording. It stands along side Jerome Moross' main title for 1958's "THE BIG COUNTRY," equally immortal. There have never been two greater Western themes from the cinema. Moross' theme is pure Americana and conjures up the American spirit of the individual to persevere against all obstacles and never bend one's principles to satisfy another's. Bernstein's theme is both rousing and reflective and is a statement on bravery and man's defense of the downtrodden, to take up a cause for good when the odds aren't. Both men's musical themes address and define the very essence of what distinguishes traditional American Westerns from other cinematic subjects. One note, since 1966's "RETURN OF THE SEVEN" went to video it has been re-titled "RETURN OF THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN."
Elmer Bernstein is one of the best!.......2000-06-12
I love western soundtracks and Return of the Magnificient 7 is definitely part of my collection. There is some similarity to The Magnificient 7 but Mr Bernstein uses his masterful technique to change the western sound just a tad, but not to offend the listener. I enjoyed this CD asmuch as I did the movie, as usually the case.
