True Fiction Pictures: Music From The Films Of Hal Hartley [Soundtrack]
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
A collection of music from Hal Hartley's first four features (Surviving Desire, The Unbelievable Truth, Trust, and Simple Men) and one early short (Theory of Achievement), this CD features some of Hartley's catchiest compositions. (That they happen to be cues for his films makes them no less fun to listen to.) Played on guitar and keyboard, his compositions tend to be short, repetitive chord progressions that build inexorably--and stay in your head for weeks. Though Yo La Tengo's two contributions can both be found elsewhere, Ether's wonderfully ethereal "Rue des Jours" and Hub Moore's cannot. Moore went on to contribute to other Hartley works, and his solo album, Hub, is also recommended. --Randy Silver

Just to let you know..........2006-12-06
Anyone who is buying this for the Hub Moore songs (specifically "Walk Away"), should know that they are not all the same versions that were used in the films.
Just thought I would put that out there, as this collection tends to fetch quite the pretty penny.

beauty.......2002-06-02
I first saw one of Hal Hartley's films as a loan from a friend of mine. (Simple Men.)
I then went on to devour every thing Hal Hartley made. I cannot recommend these films or this music more. I distinctly remember catching my breath a few times, having to rewind and reset more than a few. I was left believing in the beauty of life and all the ugliness it brings.
This "soundtrack" is a beautiful reminder of all those moments.
The end credits to Simple Men (#15 on this comp.) just make me glad i'm alive. So beautiful and so sad.
"Gonna Miss You" (#9) by Hub Moore is also especially great.
Eh, it's alright........1999-04-13
This is a decent collection, particularly since it includes the Hub Moore tracks; but, as with most soundtracks, it suffers in the translation from film to stereo. What's great about the majority of the tracks is that they work beautifully in the film, but once they've been removed, they're just little ramblings and plods on a keyboard or a guitar.
Ace........1998-12-24
Its about time the music from his earlier films was made available! If you like this cd, definitely check out the soundtracks to Flirt and Henry Fool.

Ever since I caught Trust late at night on Bravo, I fell in love with Adrienne Shelly (who wouldn't?) and I was also introduced to Hal Hartley. The music accompanying the last shot was so (for the lack of a better word) cool, that I watched the credits to catch who did the music. After years of looking for this Ned Rifle guy, Hal released Amateur, and I got that soundtrack, and it was awesome. Now I just got this soundtrack, and it's twice as good. With the themes for Simple Men, the Unbelievable Truth, as well as Trust, this is a must have for any Hal Hartley (or Adrienne Shelly) fan.
