Mike Figgis is a rarity: a marquee film director who insists on composing the music for his soundtracks (you can add John Carpenter to this elite bunch). With Figgis on Figgis we get a solid sampling of the composer's film works from throughout his career. It's an interesting journey for soundtrack lovers and Figgis-philes alike. Two tracks from 1988's Stormy Monday sound like a cross between Ennio Morricone's score for Once upon a Time in America (an influence Figgis acknowledges) and John Barry's Body Heat. Internal Affairs, dating just a year later, was never a great film but its soundtrack--a mix of flamenco guitar, percussion, and ethereal vocals--is Figgis gone worldbeat (a precursor to his Loss of Sexual Innocence work). Figgis really shines when he's at his most reflective (the moving chamber music for Miss Julie is nearly worth the price of admission alone), but--as with his movies--you have to show a little patience to get to the good stuff. --Jason Verlinde

Musical highlights from "STORMY MONDAY", "LIEBESTRAUM", "ONE NIGHT STAND", "LOSS OF SEXUAL INNOCENCE", "MISS JULIE", "TIME CODE"..."INTERNAL AFFAIRS" - as Hollywood beckoned the services of Figgis for the new Richard Gere film, the score which has never before been released to the public is classic Jazz at its finest..."LEAVING LAS VEGAS" gaining international stardom, and receiving four Academy Award nominations for the film, two for Best Director and Best Writer, not to shabby for a kid from Carlisle, England who began playing trumpet and guitar for various local rock and roll bands as a teenager.
Milan Records and Mike Figgis create the ultimate anthology for this one-of-a-kind composer which follows his unique career. From Jazzy trumpet to mournful strings, demonstrates the ease at which Figgis can transcend genres to evoke the appropriate mood...and so my "film-score-buffs" read my lips...this is one not to be missed!
