By far the best adaptation of a John Grisham bestseller, this smart, fast-paced 1993 film--directed by Sydney Pollack (Out of Africa)--offers up the dilemma of a young lawyer whose life is turned upside down when he takes a job at a Southern law firm owned by the mob. Mitch McDeere (Tom Cruise), having just graduated from Harvard Law, is besieged with offers but takes a job, too good to be true, with a small Memphis firm. He and his wife, Abby (Jeanne Tripplehorn), are sucked in by the seemingly close-knit, collegial nature of the firm's partners and the expensive perks that come with the job. His mentor, Avery (Gene Hackman), teaches him the ropes, but Mitch and Abby begin to sense there's something wrong with this idyllic life. When a couple of associates turn up dead, Mitch begins to investigate the history of the firm; and when the FBI asks him to spy on the firm for them, Mitch realizes his life will never be the same and that, if discovered, he, his wife, and his long-lost brother will be in mortal danger. Mitch must use all his talents as a lawyer to outsmart the firm, the FBI, and the mob in order to reclaim control over his life. A very entertaining thriller that engages the audience at a breakneck pace while not taking itself too seriously. It also features some fine writing and strong performances from a large cast of exceptional actors. --Robert Lane

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10
If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.
Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19
Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.
And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.
I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.
More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30
There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.
It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).
This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.
There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.
Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25
This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.
Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27
This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.
I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.
Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

Really Liked This!!!!.......2007-01-03
This is an awesome LP, especially if you're in the mood for a little New Orleans style piano sound. The tracks are well mixed between piano solos that are performed by Dave Grusin and other various artists that make up a great range of adult listening pleasure. I have had many dinner parties with this CD playing in the background, it works great and the guests enjoy it.
NIce.......2006-01-16
Jazz piano stuff is especially good. Very unique and smartly crafted soundtrack. :)
amazing music.......2005-12-01
I love love love all kinds of movies and their music, so it's really rare that i find a soundtrack from one particular movie that stands out as a favorite for me. But I have to say that this is my favorite soundtrack of any movie. Grusin is a genius in his composing and performing. And the other artists that contributed to this soundtrack were just as outstanding. The only song on this cd that I could do without is "Never Mind", but everything else is stellar. I loved it so much I ended up seeking out some of the other artists' albums, and I also bought the sheet music for piano and am trying to master every song. If you love jazz/blues piano, you'll enjoy this album. (All this paired with a great screenplay and awesome actors makes The Firm one of my favorite movies as well.)
Outstanding!.......2005-07-27
This soundtrack is filled with outstanding music. The moment I saw the film, I knew I had to get this soundtrack. You can sit back and listen to this at home, or while you're at the office, or in the car. It's really a feel-good CD. Enjoy!
Not So Firm.......2004-10-28
Once again Mister Grusin demonstrates his inability to score a film. His music is not bad but he has no inkling about the rigors that go into scoring a film. I suppose he has been around long enough and he did score THE GRADUATE but he still has not shown any real depth when it comes to getting inside the characters we see on the screen. His compositions lack depth and that important spark of emotion. Sorry.

Classic Material.......2007-04-18
What else but a classic would you expect from Nas Foxy Brown and AZ
Decent album that didn't really live up to it's expectations.......2007-04-12
The Firm album was supposed to be an all-star supergroup album with 3 of the top MCs in the game (Nas, AZ, Foxy Brown) along with one of the top producers in Dr. Dre. It's hard to say where this album fell short but I still think It was a pretty decent album. Not as good as it should've been but still worth buying.
Could a been better without Foxy.......2007-03-26
I find this album trash for a few reasons but Foxy was the number 1 reason to me. I just hate female rappers. She was like what, 16 in this? I aint takin no young hooker serious. And since Nas is my favorite mc it hurts like hell to give this a low rating. The only listenable tracks to me is firm biz and phone tap. Canibus ripped them on they own track. All I gotta say is this. Dont cop this album. Cop Nas and AZ albums. The firm is for the birds.
Not All Collaborations Are Good Ideas............2007-03-02
The Firm(a conglomerate consisting of Nas, AZ, Foxy Brown and the relative unknown Nature(who took the place of original member Cormega after a heated dispute))...came up with the "brilliant idea" to collaborate on a full album...after the release of "Affirmative Action" from Nas' It Was Written album. After enlisting the assistance of Dr. Dre's Aftermath Records and production by the infamous Trackmasters, The Firm's album is subpar to say the least...it sounds like each individual artists is trying too hard to outshine the other and many of the beats consisting on this album are just a lil too sample heavy...."Hardcore" for example. However, I will admit, there are some shining moments by all four members....and some half decent production....i.e. "Phone Tap"..."F**k Somebody Else"(lyrics are forgettable since Foxy is doing what she does best on the mic...talking about sex and its many forms....I think you might be able to masterbate to this one...LOL). I will give this a decent try but I can't go no further than that. I will agree with one reviewer saying that listening to the group as solo artists is a more satisfying.
The worst collabo allbum of all time! (1and 1/2 stars).......2006-12-21
To tell you the truth I am surprised that this album is bad(DONT ASK!). But it is bad as these reviewers say it is. Songs that I endorse:FIRM FIASCO, PHONE TAP, FIVE MINUTES TO FLUSH, DESPARADOS(Canibus was the deciding factor), and THROW YOUR GUNS. Filler: Firm Family(crickets chirping), Firm All-Stars(YAAWWWN!) Firm Biz(they literally destroyed their buzz with this song), Hardcore,F*** Somebody Else(Foxy sounds like a real dumb b***h on this song)and the rest of this album. Bottom Line:This album is the reason why most people say nay to Collaboration albums. The production was bland, the lyrics were below average and the fact that this album stained Dr Dre's credibilty says a lot. Question: If Cormega was a part of this group, would it have been a big deal? Answer:No, because even if Cormega is nice that doesnt mean this album is going to be hot. Anybody who says this album is bad is not hating, they are telling the truth.

Customer Reviews:
A great CD for those who appreciate movie themes.......2000-10-06
I enjoyed this CD because Leonard Martin does a good job in selecting the scores of movies that are special in itself, outside from the context of the movie. His selection is diverse, in the sense that it includes scores of not only the big blockbusters of the 90s (Titanic, Saving Private Ryan, Braveheart), but also of the movies that have already been forgotten (Fast, Cheap and Out of Control, and The Rainmaker). There is reasoning behind such a selection, according to Martin: "Some scores wear well over time and provide a rewarding experience long after the movie begins to recede in one's memory."
Martin selects the scores from a variety of film genres (drama, dark comedy, suspense, for example) which translates into a well rounded compilation of musical pieces (classical,spanish-inspired, blues, etc). He also includes liner notes reagrding each selection and composer, which serves as a brief, yet interesting, background regarding each selection.
The only qualm that I have with the CD is the abscence of some of my personal favorites, which are certainly memorable both as films and as scores. Reagarding such statements Martin states that "Lists, of course, are highly arbitrary and designed to provoke argument." Moreover, Martin acknowledges that selections are not the only great scores of the past decade; they are, however, among his favorites. I definitely agree with him on this statement.
Purchase the CD for not only your favorites but for the nice variety that Martin put together. You will be surprised that you will love the scores, even of the movies you may not have seen!
