Awesome Set!.......2007-07-01
I am a huge fan of Jerry Goldsmith. They did a great job preserving his vision. I can listen to this collection for hours. Great music!
Elmer Bernstein Film Music Collection.......2006-11-03
This is compilation of hit film music from one of the greatest composers in motion pictures. What is surprising though is the music not included like the Ghost And The Darkness, the 13th Warrior, Rudy and others. To be sure, 4 discs are not enough for a composure of this stature. THe recording, however, is an "engineering masterpiece" which makes the music even more enjoyable than when you first heard it at the movies. When are we ging to get the music that was omittd from this compilaton?
Overall a strong Goldsmith sampler.......2006-04-11
Okay, this is a CD review, so the focus is on music, but I've got to say this first: this has got to be a contender for the ugliest cover art ever. I mean, come on...instead of a tribute to the composer, the cover looks like someone spilled a glass of merlot over a NASA photo.
Fortunately, even an ugly cover will not ruin good music. And the good news is that I'd say about 75 percent of the music is good....and on a 4 cd set, that's a lot. Like other Silva compilations, the strength of this compilation is the variety. There are selections from the big releases (Star Trek, Omen, Rambo), but there is also a healthy dose of tracks from the smaller releases(Under Fire, Lionheart, The Swarm).
Two examples come to mind. Capricorn One and The Great Train Robbery are two movies that are not exactly household names today, but are dominated by two of Goldmith's finest main themes. The City of Prague Philharmonic come through with terrific renditions. And there are plenty of other strong performances...a few being concert versions conducted by Goldsmith himself. Suprisingly, "The Wind and the Lion" works, which is no small accomplishment given the ferentic original performance of "Raisuli Attacks".
It's not a complete success. A few of the performances fall flat, particularly some of the more inventive scores. Total Recall is just bad, mangling the performance with poor percussion and synthesizer choices to boot. Also a letdown is the Klingon Attack from the first Star Trek movie. The Prague Philhamonic attempt doesn't sound bad--it's just that once you've heard the original soundtrack's "blaster beam" with enough bass to rattle your teeth...well let's just say Silva's version is a little tinny in comparison.
But I shouldn't dwell on the negative. Overall, this is a strong sampler of Goldsmith's variety. There are plenty of quality performances here, and despite a few omissions (noticeably Planet of the Apes)this is a very good release from Silva.
Jerry Goldsmith - 40 years of pleasure.......2006-02-22
It was wonderful to hear Mr. Goldsmith's music that went all the way back to The Man from UNCLE, The Waltons, Dr Kildare, etc. And then to hear his music up to the present. The man was a genius!
Almost the perfect compilation.......2005-12-31
Age has its value.... This sweeping collection of compositions brings back so many great memories. This collection shows how significant Goldsmith was for both the movie screen and the small screen. With such a grand collection, every reader can be assured that at least one movie or TV program they like or remember had Goldsmith's contribution. It was an amazing life and the collection well worth having.
However, as sweepig as it is, there are a few holes in the selection. "First Contact", one of the sweetest and richest compositions from the Star Trek is absent. "The Ghost and the Darkness" is missing and the "Medicine Man" music should include the theme song. By dwelling on several selections from the Blue Max, these were squeezed out. Three full and important movie themes got the axe.
However, all but "The Ghost and the Darkness" are readily available and not overly expensive as is the "Ghost" CD. This is a must have for the TV and movie music fan.
Before there was Hans Solo there was Napolean Solo, before ER there was Dr. Kildare. Jerry Goldsmith IS Sci-Fi. "Resistance is futile.. you MUST assimilate this CD collection."

"The Professionals...The Wild Bunch...Wild Rovers...Silva".......2001-12-28
The "Classic Western" is never-ending...always at the forefront of the Film Industry---whenever our film-makers run out of projects, they bring back "The Western", fresh and never wandering far from the camera's eye or the composers pen---Silva Screen has been a leader in the "Compilation Department", so is it any wonder they release some hard-to-find scores...never fear my trail pardners...here they are!
Let me begin this review by stating the opening track "THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN"(1960-Elmer Bernstein), is without a doubt, one of the most recognizable Western Themes ever composed---the same for "HOW THE WEST WAS WON"(1962-Alfred Newman), two outstanding composers with unforgettable film scores---but the score for "GETTYSBURG"(1993-Randy Edelman), just about steals the show...over fifteen minutes in length, covers the Main Title right up to the Reunion and Finale, with a special arrangement for a Suite, highlighting our freedom and liberty for ALL!
But let's get to the hard-to-find scores---"THE PROFESSIONALS"(1966-Maurice Jarre), starring Burt Lancaster and Lee Marvin, great score with Jack Palance as the villian...Jarre's first attempt of scoring an American Western, captures the mood perfectly---"WILD BUNCH"(1969-Jerry Fielding), the classic Sam Packinpah film has been re-issued on DVD in it's entire uncut length, and composer Fielding completes the picture with this outstanding score---"WILD ROVERS"(1971-Jerry Goldsmith), this Blake Edwards film sets the wheels in motion for our composer to write a gripping score of the West, and how it was coming to the end of the trail, as civilization was closing in.
There you have it Buckaroo's...as we drive our herd to Abilene with Nic Raine(conductor) and The City Of Prague Philharmonic riding point, making sure no stragglers are left behind, we must meet our deadline at the rail head...James Fitzpatrick(producer) and Reynold da Silva(executive producer) giving us a fair price for our beef, this is how the West was, and through the recordings of Silva Screen Records is again...so "film-score-buffs", lean back in the saddle and watch the sun come up over the prairie skies...we're back when our country was just coming of age, gotta love it!

Goldsmith's Lightest Cowboy Music.......2007-02-17
One of the types of genres where Jerry Goldsmith excells at is western, and in spite of the fact that this is a Blake Edwards movie, "Wild Rovers" is no exception.
Blake Edwards is known for his light and intelligent comedies and dramas, but it's interesting that he tackled a cowboy movie, and even more interesting, the fact that he hired Goldsmith, instead of his usual composer Henry Mancini. No matter. The truth is this is a very good work by Goldsmith. The main theme is wonderful, keeping the true spirit of the western genre; even as a song sung by his daughter Ellen (Smith, in the album)and Sheb Wooley, that theme is truly remarkable. Also, there are the tracks 'Bronco Bustin'' and 'Wild Horses', which are very exciting and enjoyable. The rest is music conveys how the drama develops between the characters played by William Holden and Ryan O'Neal. It's fine music.
The idea of coupling the original film soundtrack and the album re-recording allows the listener to compare the two pieces of music, as only FSM knows how to do it. It may get tiresome sometimes, but Goldsmith's music for "Wild Rovers" is incredible and makes you relax, feeling that you are traveling through those western landscapes with the "Wild Rovers."
ANOTHER SOILD EFFORT BY JERRY GOLDSMITH.......2006-09-21
"The Wild Rovers",a western buddy-type movie directed by Blake Edwards(of Pink Panther fame, and husband of Julie Andrews)has recieved an exciting symphonic score written by one of the recent masters of the genre,Jerry Goldsmith...This album has been issued a couple of times previously, but this edition is the definitive version...Previously missing cues have been added, and some of the familiar cues have been re-mixed in order to conform to the composer's original intentions...When "The Wild Rovers" was released into the theatres the film, the score, everything about it had first been butchered by the studio, over the protests of director Edwards..No wonder the resulting mess was a big fat zero at the box-office..Originally the album was released on M.G.M as an L.P...later Ted Turner's short-lived experiment in soundtrack cd production paired this score(in its original L.P. format)with another Goldsmith effort entitled"The Last Run"..This edition, from Filmscore Monthly,is expanded and complete...If you like Goldsmith in his prime then add this cd to your collection.

Though he's garnered a reputation of innovation and excellence in his sci-fi scores, composer Jerry Goldsmith has informed any number of other genres with his masterly writing and arranging technique. Richard Fleischer's elegiac 1971 caper affords Goldsmith the opportunity to produce an elegant, if distinctly Euro-flavored, score; perhaps a telling tribute to the widespread influence of Ennio Morricone during the period. Conversely, Blake Edward's would-be comical, if somewhat half-baked, 1971 take on the Western allows Goldsmith to again exercise his skills in a genre where his contributions have sometimes been unjustly overlooked. The composer responds with a score that combines many of the familiar expectations of genre with a Copland-esque modernism, sense of space, and dramatic drive that far outshines its cinematic inspiration. --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Strange Combination of Good Moody Scores.......2000-09-16
Jerry Goldsmith has been in the business for longer than most of his contemporary listeners. The Wild Rovers and The Last Run are two outings of the very early 1970s that explore very moody atmospheres with nicely developed orchestrations with fluent melodic material. The Wild Rovers, a western that suffered the fate of being heavily recut, enjoys a beautifully melodious opening theme, which later reappears as a main theme. (It was also vocalized into an effective song with nice backup orchestration.) Jerry's other thematic material clearly indicates the nature of a western with joyful and at times appropriately exciting rhythms. The Last Run was a low budget melodrama starring the late George C. Scott that was supported by an equally melodramatic score. At times it is reminiscent of the works of Ennio Morricone yet it has at it's core the inherent qualities that Jerry brings to his music. Previously only available as an LP, this CD is a welcome collection to anyone's collection, even if the scores themselves score higher separately than together on this combination CD. Nice work from thirty years ago.
