5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-07-12

David Bromberg at his best! I listened to these in the late seventies/early eighties and recently bought the CD's. What a pleasure to listen to them again. Bromberg is by far on of my top 5 favorite artist. Glad he is back.

5 out of 5 stars Almost an Old Classic.......2005-05-21

Well, I was looking to replace my vinyl copy of Reckless Abandon, and found this instead. I could kick myself in the arse for lending it out. Now I won't have a copy of "Beware, Brother, Beware" OR Stagger Lee. Damn. So, my review is thus: best muscianship you'll ever hear, delivered in a fun, funky and accessable style. Sort of like blues, bluegrass, Irish, rock n roll- all intermingled. Sigh....

4 out of 5 stars Master of Versatility.......2003-04-19

You may listen to this album and find it hard to believe its all one band. How can one group of musicians _possibly_ produce dixieland, bluegrass, electric blues, Irish music, country, Delta blues, jazz, several flavors of rock, and God knows what else, and sound credible at all of them?

I don't know...all I know is that listening to this band is an incredible experience and an endless joy. The songs are good, the musicianship is incredible, and there is a feeling of fun, of feeling good, that suffuses everything they do.

I bought this CD after having "Reckless Abandon" on vinyl. Getting to know the other album, and it's a treat. One casualty of the jump to CD....the original cover of "Reckless Abandon" by B. Kliban was wonderful in itself. Its what led me to buy the vinyl album in the first place!

I only regret that I missed the chance to see this band live. I understand that Bromberg has retired from performing and recording. A great loss...must have been God's own bar band. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Missing "Beware" but still worth 5 stars.......2002-08-18

Like another reviewer I was hugely dissapointed that "Beware, Brother, Beware" , which was originally on "Reckless Abandon" is not included in the cd. I too am at a loss as to why. It is one of his funkiest and funniest songs. That said, this combination of what were 2 albums by the David Bromberg Band still gets 5 stars for the many other variously energetic and poignantly beautiful songs.
I do hope that "Beware, Brother, Beware" will see cd light of day.

5 out of 5 stars Beware, Brother Beware.......2001-08-15

I love it, BUT: it is missing "Beware, Brother Beware", a favorite of mine. I wonder why. However, I am very happy to have these classic, excellent Bromberg albums on CD. The sound quality is great (a pleasant improvement over the cassette tape made from my vinyl). I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars the heaviest DP album since In Rock........2007-07-07

After Purpendicular, it was clear that Deep Purple could basically do whatever the hell they wanted to do with Steve Morse on the guitar. Abandon brings back the heavy style that was epitomized on Deep Purple In Rock. The only problem is that most of the songs and riffs just aren't as memorable as classic Purple or other Morse era favorites (Sometimes I Feel Like Screaming, Ted the Mechanic, Rapture of the Deep, Picture of Innocence). Any Fule Kno That is a pretty good opener, but most of the album is like The House of Blue Light and The Battle Rages On: solid and a little underwhelming. Seventh Heaven is good; Fingers to the Bone and Don't Make Me Happy are too. The last three tracks pick it up more. The riff to '69 is catchy and the lyrics (Your ma said you slept real good in your food last night/You couldn't hold it down but you broke up a real good fight) are pretty amusing to me. Evil Louie also has a neat rhythmic riff and again, the words, which I usually don't pay much attention to, are neat. Finally, we have a remake of Bloodsucker from In Rock. I'm not sure why. They could have put this out without it and had 11 songs...but whatever. It's a pretty good take, though Gillan's screeching isn't what it was in 1970.

Maybe it's not the first Morse album you'd give to a Purple newbie, but after awhile, it begins to catch on.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Purple Sound!.......2007-05-23

If you are a Fan of DP, you will really like this album, it's very Heavy and sounds just like Classic Deep Purple. This was Steve Morse's second Album with DP and it's much more in line with old DP then his first effort.

4 out of 5 stars 3,5 stars for hardrock profi men.......2006-11-07

musically the songs are harder than Purpendicular 1996
Almost Human is a heavy track, heavy drumming beat, good guitar-riff and keyboard solo.
Seventh Heaven is a heavy track, heavy drumming beat, good guitar-riff and highpicthed voice of Ian Gillan.
Watching the sky is a slow but heavy track either, heavy drumming beat, hard guitar-rhythm and nice vocal of Ian Gillan.
69, jack ruby, whatshername, evil louie are absed on traditional Purple sound, heavy keyboard and hard hitting guitar riff.

the highlight is the remake of Bloodsucker (originally was recorded in Deep Purple In Rock 1970).

3 out of 5 stars Abandon.......2006-09-27

Band Personnell:
Ian Gillan - Vocals
Steve Morse - Guitars
Roger Glover - Bass
Ian Paice - Drums
Jon Lord - Organs and Keyboards

This album ain't as good as many expected, "Any Fule Kno That" and the remaking of the classic "Bloodsucker" have to be the best tracks.

4 out of 5 stars Better Than Expected.......2006-07-08

After being amazed by Rapture of the Deep, I had to get the other three Steve Morse albums. Not having any preconceptions, I have to say I have found myself rather impressed with this album. These days, any album that has at least five songs that I like has to be pretty darn good. There are few modern albums that have all four and five star songs in my opinion. So this album sounds pretty good to me. Since I got it along with Perpendicular and Bananas I can only say that I think I like this one the best, simply because after one week I find this album has the most songs of three that I find myself playing over and over again. Probably my favourite is Seventh Heaven which seems to be the among the heaviest tunes DP has ever put out. Excellent guitar sound. When I was a teenager, guys Jon Lord's age said metal was nothing but racket. What does Lord think as he rocks away with Morse on this song? She Was is an interesting heavy tune that seems just beyond the borders of DP's previous stuff but fits nicely into their repetoire. One of the joys of having Steve Morse in the band is the use of more melodic and acoustic guitar which was rare under the Blackmore banner. The opening to '69 and the folksy sounding parts of Work Your Fingers to the Bone are a real pleasure to listen to. Lyrically, Work Your Fingers... is a wonderful new step for DP. There are a couple of other memorable tracks like Any Fule Kno That and Watching the Sky, the latter again combining hard rock guitar with experimental sounds and a softer touch. The whole album starts to come across as a stage for a variety of guitar sounds that are played excellently. The big surprise was to hear Bludsucker, one of my all-time favourite DP songs. Gillan is hard pressed to deliver the vocal performance he did back in 1970 but he pulls it off nicely, albeit with a few variations to accomodate his 'mature' vocal talents. I was starting to write him off after The House of Blue Light and the live performances on Nobody's Perfect but on this album Gillan proves that a man in his fifties can still scream to a hard rock guitar and do it well.

Though some people give this album a poor rating, I am overall very pleased with it.

Clear and crisp and played with vigor and heart. Mass call is of course Mess Call that someone spelled wrong. What worked for me is that I review four or five calls each night before bed. I hum them first and then listen to the call on the CD. The next day, I work out on the bugle until lip fatigue sets in.

5 out of 5 stars Clear and simple.......2006-08-04

Single bugle calls, clear and simple-recognizable to this Navy/Marine Corps veteran. Also some army stuff if you desire that sort of thing. Quite a lot of quality stuff.

Well Jason Morant is new to me. He has a great voice. His songs touch my soul. Give him a chance, you'll be glad you did. I am looking for more of his music. Love it, love it, love it.

5 out of 5 stars THE BEST!.......2005-12-04

find it, buy it, treasure it! this CD is amazing, jason morant is amazing! i not only love his music but yearn for the connection with God he has, he speaks such faitful and truthful words! this CD is one to play all the way and it will lift your spirits gauranteed!

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2005-11-06

I got my first taste of Jason Morant at Aquire the Fire in Dallas. In his music you can truely feel his heart. He perofrmed some of the songs from the album and I purchased the CD rigth away. I Am Yours is a great song expressing Jason's devotion to God. His remake of Bless The Lord is another great track. This is a CD you can pop in and let it play all the way through.

5 out of 5 stars This is one of the best Christian albums I've ever heard.......2005-10-02

This is one of the best Christian albums I've ever heard. Unbelievable. I don't say that lightly. There is a combination of musical quality and lyrics that is outstanding.

The tunes are unique. They are not at all trite, like something you've heard before. They are very pleasing to the ear. The production of the album is meticulous. The instrumentation is good. But especially the vocals are outstanding. Jason's vocals are passionate, reflective, powerful, and diverse. He uses his vocals as a fine instrument.

The lyrics are equally excellent. They reflect a heart that loves God for the deliverance that God has done in his soul. And the concepts Jason uses are very biblical. Let me give an example:

"Now I walk alongside my Father
Without fear of what may come tomorrow
Because I know even in death I'm alive
Because You are inside of me"

In the context of the song, he spoke of God's overwhelming beauty, and also of God's mercy in calling him pure (justification by faith). Jason also spoke of how God had opened his eyes to see the daylight (new birth). Now, in the quote above, he calls God his own Father (adoption). He is not afraid of what may come, just as, for example, Jesus commanded in Matthew 6:25-34. Why is he not afraid? Because "even in death I'm alive." This is accurate, because, for example, when Jesus was about to raise Lazarus, he said in John 11:25 "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live." And why does the believer live? Because "You are inside of me." In other words, Christ lives in believers via the indwelling Holy Spirit. Remember that Paul said that "Christ in you" is "the hope of glory" (Colossians 1:27).

In short, the musical quality and the great lyrics make this album a great choice in providing another avenue for your heart rise up to God in worship.

I've been listening to this album in my car for a couple of months now, and I'm waiting till I would prefer to listen to something else--it hasn't happened yet. I bought this album on a whim, not ever having heard of Jason Morant. I just listened a little bit through Amazon. If you want to sample his music more before buying, I suggest you go to Jason's Web site. Just type his name in your favorite Web browser and you'll get to it. It will give you longer snapshots of all the songs, and it will give you an idea of his musical style is something you would enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Your ears/heart /mind and soul will thank you!.......2005-09-14

This is by far one of the best worship albums I've ever heard. (up there with Hungry, Facedown and United's look to You) Every song is incredible, from the great music to the passionate and powerful lyrics, the whole composition and production on every track is superb. Jason is very talented, I would love to see him live. The great thing about this album is I take it to work, crank it up and I'm not ashamed of listening to it or telling people about it. (pretty good witnessing tool) It is not some cookie cutter, cheesey over polished "worship album". Yuck!, Anywho, My favorite tracks are um basically every single one. But if I had to pick just 3 they would be:
#6 Bless the Lord
#8 Fashion
#12 I delight *including the secret song
I would actually rate it 8 out of 5 stars! Oh Yea! If that were possible!
So do your ears/heart/mind/stereo/body/soul/neighbors/family and spirit a huge favor and buy this album!!!

3 out of 5 stars YEP.......2006-06-02

First off avenged sevenfold had two amazing albums that destroy anything this band has ever put out before they came out with city of evil and sold out to the mainstream...but in either direction FATA is a ok band and this is a ok cd so go check it out if your into that sort of thing.... or look at a real band like the agony scene if u want good hardcore.

2 out of 5 stars ugh.......2006-04-19

Let me start off by saying that I absolutely fell in love with TBYB and have listened to it for months straight. It was just that amazing, That being said, I have a few comments on this album.

Yes I understand the viewpoint that they've matured and that's great and all. I just want to know, what the heck is the drummer doing singing half the songs that the lead singer should be singing? I mean, sure his voice is nice if you like the kinda whiny-esque thing, but seriously.

What made FATA them was their creativity and interesting components. The main thing this applied to was their singing, when Ben would sing and Francis would do some background singing. that added dimension to the songs and it was perfect that way. I don't understand why they would completely cut each other off from their (own) songs and I just think it's ridiculous. Yes, I am talking about how Ben seems to have his own songs and Francis his own.

I won't say that I don't think they've grown a bit, but personally, this album just felt really weak to me. TBYB had a lot of beautiful heartfelt lyrics and this had subpar lyrics that felt more or less generic rather than personal.

Musically, creativity has nearly died and withered away. It bothers me that they have so much potential and they're not using it. Vocally, I know that if they just collaborated and made their songs less commercial they could've done ok.

And right now, I'm being extremely nice in this review. The album was bland and weak in most aspects, but I understand their whole situation with losing members and all. I just hope they can clean up their act for their next album... hopefully I won't be as disappointed

5 out of 5 stars Much improved!!.......2006-04-04

First off, I've known FATA for a while but they haven't really interested me... until now. I really like this album. Normally I would've given it 4 stars but because they sound so much more mature and focused on this album I'm gonna go ahead and give it a 5.

People that say this CD isn't hardcore and naming off other "hardcore" bands are really naming metal and noise (Yes, that's a genre. Look it up!!). That is just downright ignorant and uninformed and I'm not even gonna comment on that.

These guys definitely DID NOT sell out. They're still on Vagrant which is an independent label the last time I checked. You want sell-outs, look at EVERY SINGLE metal band. Avenged retardo Sevenfold, which is on Warner (major label), is absolutely horrible. These morons can't even scream! (Their label won't let them, haha!!) If you're on a major label you can't write the kind of song that's in your heart you have to write something that'll sell records. Independent labels don't care. And that's why From Autumn to Ashes is a REAL BAND writing REAL MUSIC.

The bottom line is... if you like emotionally powerful music written from the heart (you know, good music) you're gonna like this album. Just buy it. If you're into nice ballads with beautiful melodies, this record's got you covered with "Placentapede"(my personal favorite, the outro is freakin awesome!), "Streamline", "Abandon Your Friends" among others. If you like furious angercore check out "Where Do You Draw the Line?", "Vicious Cockfight", "Jack and Ginger" and "Short for Show". If you like disgusting, make-me-want-to-puke metal please look elsewhere. There's none of that garbage on this recording.

EDIT: It's true previous FATA albums had more meaningful lyrics and the comradery shown when Ben and Francis both sing in the same song is definitely inspiring but I'm sorry to say that Too Bad You're Beautiful (TBYB) and Fiction We Live (FWL) are subpar albums. It's not that they don't have some good stuff there (I have the albums and I like them but they're burned, not originals) but they weren't worth my hard-earned money.

Jiyoung, I can tell you WERE being nice in your review and I'm trying to be too. Here's what I think...
For me one of the standout tracks on TBYB is Reflections (track 8). Although I absolutely love the guitar solo and about 2 min in the middle of the track the remaining 4 min of the song is really just random noise. Most of the album seem to have this "randomness" instead of actual structured songs. And that is why I prefer Abandon Your Friends. That's not to say that ALL of FATA's older stuff is like this. I really like Lilacs and Lolita, Milligram Smile, Autumn's Monologue and Fiction We Live off of FWL, of course. And that's not to mention After Dinner Payback which is one of my favorite tracks ever!! But when you consider that is 5 out of 10 tracks that's not worth buying. Sorry.

5 out of 5 stars This is a great cd........2006-01-24

Wow first off comparing this band to Avengend Sevenfold. No way they sound way better. A7X sounds like mainstream. Francis mark's voice is amazing. The slow songs are great. I love the old alubms just as much as the new ones. Its good when a band can be creative and focous on different styles. Every song on this cd is absloutely amazing. The lyrics are great as well. As far as it goes for the haters. I would like to see any of you putting down this record put one out and do as well as FATA. I don't think that would happen.

5 out of 5 stars shut up .......2006-01-12

Shut up everyone who doesnt like it cause its "emo" you want hardcore go put on your sisters pants and get your ass kicked at a show. This cd is so good. I loved the last one but i think this one blows it away. So shut up changing your sound does not mean uve sold out. And they barely changed theyve sounded like this for a while.

It is truelly sad that Chasing Furies did not recieve the radio play and attention they deserved on this CD. Being a promoter of Alt/Rock bands in Southern OR for some time, I find it hard to believe that this CD did not take off. Instead Chasing Furies is a name that very few are familiar with, and since it has been many years sine the release of this their final CD, I assume they are no more. Amazingly beautiful harmonies. Chasing furies where tearing apart our souls and minds, long before Evenesence, was even on the radio. If you do not own it, but it...

5 out of 5 stars A True Delight.......2003-11-29

No true Christian/Alternative/Rock music collection would be complete without this album in it. The lyrics are awesome, heartfelt and honest in their revealing of the inner hearts of these 3 siblings as they struggle through life and try to walk closer to God.
Haunting vocals and sweet harmonies make my heart melt every time I listen to it.
I like it for the aforementioned reasons and also because it is technically well-produced, the music is well written and contains a lot of variety in style, and because it crosses generational barriers. (My kids both love it too, and one is 19 and the other is 26)
Unfortunately, as far as I can tell, this is their one and only CD. However, you can also hear two other cuts from Chasing Furies if you buy the compilations "Happy Christmas" and "Listen: Louder", I believe both on Sparrow Records.
If any one knows how to het hold of Chasing Furies, please have them call me. I'm in the phone book. I know of a Christian Night Club who'd LOVE to book them!
Happy listening!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best I've heard.......2002-12-26

I borrowed this cd from my church, and I couldn't stop listening to it. I don't know if I'll ever be able to return it, at least until I get a chance to go out and buy it. :) My favorite track is #3, it reminds me of Violet Burning...another cool band to check out. :)

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2002-06-20

I first saw their music video for "Thicker" on Sky Angel, and from that time I've been hooked on this CD. The lyrics are very poetic. I would recommend this CD to everyone that wants to know what real music should be.

5 out of 5 stars I could listen over and over...........2002-03-23

I first heard of Chasing Furies from a silly TBN game show and immediately went to check them out. This CD is one of those that you could listen to over and over again. Whether its background music or drivin down the highway music, this band fits almost any mood.
If you like the enchanted melodic sound of the Cranberries or the soft-core style of Drain STH or even just sound of interesting alternative then check this band out.
The chick who sings lead has a wonderful voice that digs down deep inside you.
Better yet...they are using all this amazing talent to golorify God!
Definitely worth the investment

5 out of 5 stars One more for Mansell........2005-09-09

Clint Mansell, who you may know from his involvement with the soundtracks for Pi and Requiem for a Dream is also behind this (obviously) little known gem.

But perhaps gem is an understatement, it's a diamond and considering that I held reservations due to Katie Holmes' "singing" (she provides a series of tonal 'aaah's and 'laaa's, nothing spectacular on her part) - it all the more deserves to be referred to as such.

The score is fantastic, as to be expected. Mansell's previous work started on a good foot with Pi and took a good mile leap into the realm of 'amazing' with Requiem For a Dream. This soundtrack further solidifies the idea that there is more to Mansell than being the self-confessed founder of Greboism.

Stankface Laboratories is an independent record label based out of Los Angeles, Ca. It was started by Brad Smith (principle songwriter and founder of the multi platinum recording group Blind Melon, and currently in Unified Theory). Our first release, Brad's solo album, is a collection of songs written, performed, and produced by Brad himself. It also features the remaining members of Blind Melon, as well as Squirrel Nut Zippers, and Fiona Apples touring drummer.

Brad will be taping the VH1 "Behind the Music" along with the remaining members later this month and will promote these releases on the show.

5 out of 5 stars Blind Melon fans must get this CD!.......2007-05-29

We've been looking for this CD for such a long time and it is so worth the wait. All Blind Melon fans must get this. You'll be glad you did!

5 out of 5 stars One of those CDs you never take out of the changer..........2004-08-24

Since I was on tour 2 years ago, I've been hooked on Abandon Jalopy. Of course, I was already a fan of Blind Melon, and I believe that Brad Smith is one of the greatest rock bassists/multi-instrumentalists out there-but I didn't EVER expect for Abandon Jalopy to be half of Blind Melon. Blown away by the sample I heard on their former website, I played it over and over-"Wake Up Bradley"...(that particular song is not on this album, but I hope it's on a future album). So my inroduction to Abandon Jalopy was nothing on the album here being reviewed.
Nontheless, I bought the album and EVERY SINGLE SONG was damned amazing:) For those who are musicians, this album is filled with tasty licks, amazing fills, and all around great musicianship. And for those unfortunate enough to not be musicians, this album is great for the lyrics and wonderful for any occassion. I could sit here and recommend certain tracks, but then again, I would just be listing off every track lol.
Not only does Brad Smith deliver his talents, but he also has the help of the remaining members of Blind Melon (RIP, Shannon Hoon). And since Blind Melon, as a whole and as one, was a group of amazing musicians and 2 guitarists that didn't step all over eachother, this album is a continuation of what could've would've should've been done with Blind Melon...but of course with the morbid twist.
When, oh when, will Abandon Jalopy go on tour?!?!?!

5 out of 5 stars sounds like a follow up to "Soup".......2003-10-02

I was always a Blind Melon fan, but admittidly I didnt know much of the personal other than Shannon Hoon. I assumed he was the driving creative force behind Blind Melon. After listening to Mercy, now I can hear the contributions Brad Smith made to that band. This disc will certainly satisfy Blind Melon fans as all of that bands wonderful quirkiness is found here. Trippy lyrics, great guitar playing, and just unususal arraangments make this a great follow up to Soup. To me this is better than the Unified Therory disc, but I havent heard that one as much. But all in all this disc is highly reccommended by myself, and Im sure other Blind Melon fans will love it.

4 out of 5 stars Working Through It.......2002-02-28

Abandon Jalopy's mercy is not a CD to be taken lightly.
As most reviewers stated Brad Smith is indeed late of Blind Melon, one of , if not the most underappreciated bands of the 90's.
Smith's vocal range/ability is a bit of a distraction on the disk. Though he hits his notes just fine and attempts some very unique stuff his voice, despite all the years of experience, doesn't project particularly well and I wonder if this has more to do with the original recording process than anything else. This will not impede your enjoyment of the music whatsoever, I guess I was just a bit shocked either by the mix or the ability, I don't know which.
Still, Smith delivers a record that is quite unlike anything currently being done while being refreshingly loyal to his southern roots and sensabilities. It is obvious where much of what I consider to be the 'overblown' B.M. arrangements comes from, Smith reaches far often going from quiet guitar introspection to grandiose orchestra arrangements and back again without even a change in tempo. This may result in music that's a bit schizophrenic at times, and may alienate listeners who are more 'hook prone'.
I must admit that I am slowly, but surely, ingesting the disk. Not everything blew me away at first listen, but the disk is slowly revealing itself and the journey seems well worth it. Smith uses very unique phrases and lyrics, peppered with wry humor and honest observation. I wish Brad had included a few liner notes regarding each song, it's genesis and all. Smith strikes me as the type of guy you'd love to spend an evening talking with, much in the same way Hoon seemed to connect with people on a very real/genuine level.
Be aware however, that this Cd as a musical statement, is all Brad, and though a few ex Meloner's appear as well as others, the disk definitely has a 'solo' tone throughout.
I wouldn't count on any tour to support it, though if he does I'm there!

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!!!!!!!.......2002-01-08

Brad Smith is an extremly talentedartist. He plays alot of the instuments himself. And lyrics aregreat and I think alot of people can identify with.Very underatedmusician. The music is very eclecticand would appeal to open minded people.Simialr to Soup music wise.Every song goes somewhere new.Stompin'the fuse is about his old bandmate Shannon Hoon passing.Songs about his childhood, his wife, just an excellent all around album. Can't wait for his next.Maybe a tour too?

2 out of 5 stars For completist mopheads only *sheepish grin*.......2005-10-30

The cover shows Douglas beating a hasty retreat from irate fans confronted by yet another stop gap album to line his pockets. Even Socialist art is more exciting than this dismal offering. I was especially amused to find track 15 sounding like BIKO. It is time for Mr P (for it is he) to stop releasing reductive and pointless old material and start writing some reductive and pointless new material. Preferably with some nifty synth dance rhythms a-la NADA! And a distinct lack of porcine references.

The inside picture shows Douglas looking alarmingly like Eugene Terre-Blanche and seemingly geared to pen some autographs in an empty field of rape, which says a lot.

4 out of 5 stars We Said Review!... Another DIJ Catch Up Release.......2005-08-20

Yet another release in the large and ever growing discography of Death In June. This time with Abandon Tracks we find a wide open assortment of unreleased tracks or rather hard to find/out of print ones from over a pretty large span of their career. I found this release layed out and packaged quite well (in typical Death In June fashion). I find though that some of the remastered and updated tracks to be so-so and the rest, for myself (a huge fan of DIJ), nothing really exciting due to the fact i practically own all their material inside and out (why i gave it a 4/5). If your a big fan and your missing all those old out of print releases, than this release is for you, but for the occasional fan you problably won't find this release all that great (stick with and purchase some of Douglas's best releases like: Brown Book, But What Ends When The Symbols Shatter, Corn Years and even All Pigs Pigs Must Die for example).

Dawn Upshaw's recital of 20th century French songs is a bouquet to their great exponent, and often inspirer, Jane Bathori. Recorded live before an appreciative Paris audience, Upshaw's in fine voice, her lyric soprano caressing each song, leaving no doubt that she loves this repertory. She adopts slow tempos and characterizes broadly, assuming a girlish voice for some songs, a device that some listeners will adore (and others find repellent). The songs themselves are wonders, from favorites like the Ravel and Satie selections to rarely heard gems. The encore is a highlight: Dutilleux's 1993 setting of "San Francisco Night," receiving its premiere recording. Upshaw's legion of fans will need no urging to grab this disc, and it's a good choice for those seeking a representative group of outstanding modern French songs. Devotees of French mélodie, though, will prefer Marston's reissues of idiomatic historic recordings by an older generation of singers, such as Jane Bathori herself and Clare Croiza. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The joy of hearing, and listening to, the voice that is Dawn Upshaw........2006-10-16

The joy of listening to Dawn Upshaw perform is that in any venue, in recital or stage performance, in any language, one can understand every word of text, and feel every expression. And, in any recording, especially this recording, one can "see" her expression, poise, and performance without having been in the auditorium. From Mozart to Vernon Duke, from Milhaud to Goliov, she exudes the pure joy of singing, with a clarity of tone and text, that communicates to the back row of an auditorium, or through stereo speakers, the jubilance that is Dawn Upshaw.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best live recordings ever.......2001-12-26

I usually don't like live recordings. I don't need the audience to laugh appreciatively or burst into thunderous applause to tell me I should like the piece. But this album is different. It doesn't have that strange distant sense of watching a performance from outside the hall. In fact, just the opposite.
The warmth and character of Upshaw's performances pulls you in to the hall. Her respect for Mme. Jane Bathori makes this a true "hommage." Her French is impeccable, and it is clear she knows of what she sings. The performances of Ravel's "Histoires Naturelles" and Debussy's "Trois Chansons" are excellent, but I have to say her perfomance of Roussel's "Adieux" increased my respect for the composer immeasurably. However, of course Upshaw doesn't do it alone, being accompanied by one of the best piano accompanists I have ever heard. I recommend this album without reservation to any fan of Upshaw or 20th-century French song.

5 out of 5 stars Upshaw shines!.......2001-08-27

This is truly an incredible collection of french chanson and Dawn Upshaw is really in her element here. It's a live recording, but the applause really doesn't interfere with the mood presented. The collection of peices varies by artist, but generally it's a light array of lyrical music. Upshaw's interpretation is fantastic and her pronunciation of the French language itself is incredible, much better than most non-French opera singers I've heard. A wonderful album!
