1 out of 5 stars What a GREAT disappointment!!!.......2007-07-02

I must say that the guys at Cafe del Mar have really lost it. I almost lost my faith in the Cafe del Mar series after vol. 12 and 13, which were sad examples of the lack of innovation, imagination, taste, and passion needed to compile an ambitious chill-out CD or set of CDs, but I wanted to give them one more chance. I should not have done it, as this vol. 14 is even worse. One just cannot hastily pull together a number of tracks that are far and away from the ambitious masterpieces compiled by Bruno or Jose Padilla in the not-so-distant past, and are more of a reminder of cheap "beach gigolo" kind of music. The guys at Cafe del Mar must do much far better than this, invite Bruno, Jose Padilla, Phil Mison or even Afterlife to compile the next set of CDs, or stop producing these the worst not-even-close-to-so-called-kitch-heartbreaking music for teenage kids altogether!!!

Café Del Mar's Volume 5 (recently released for the first time in the U.S.) oozes warm, fuzzy, and thoroughly provocative trip-hop laced tuneage sans the shadow of conventional electronica. As is the way with the Del Mar catalog, a true gem sits amid the collection waiting to be discovered. In this case, it is the superb "Les Negresses Vertes" from Face a la Mer (a.k.a. a Nick Warren project from the early 1990s) given a thoroughly good dubbing by the great Massive Attack. Only the KLF-like spatial dreamweaving of Lamb's "Transfatty Acid (Kruder & Dorfmeister remix edit)" comes close to bettering it.

Elsewhere, Levitation's "More Than Ever People" is pure orange sunsets on shimmering waves, the warmth of its backbeat adding sensuality, while the retro-disco of French act Ame Strong's "Tout Est Bleu" has the rounded curves of bottom-end as opposed to the sharpened corner of dancefloor disco. Overall, the way to enjoy Volume 5 is to adhere to cliché No. 177 (the sum is stronger than individual parts), dim the lights, find some romantic company, and let the music do the talking. --Steffan Chirazi

3 out of 5 stars Not Bad.......2007-07-12

Volume 5 isn't a bad mix, but is definitely not the finest of the Cafe Del Mar series. Volumes 4, 6 and 7 are far more relaxing and have better flow than this volume. Nonetheless, not bad for background music if you are entertaining and not intently listening to the album.

4 out of 5 stars Chill.......2007-05-12

Bought this on a whim, actually it was one of the suggested picks from amazon. I put it on but never really listen to it. Definitely background music. Its got like weird orchestral and indian stuff going on, but its good. I like Talk with Myself.

3 out of 5 stars the series did get abit tired..........2006-06-05

One of my favourite tracks ever from the series is the last track on Volumen Ocho, Plum Crazy by Celestial. And if you like that sound, then you'll love the albums from Hong Kong's Celestial. Check them out, they are titled:

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Cafe del Mar so far!.......2006-01-06

I'm not sure if I can articulate how amazing this cd is. It really grooves and flows. The beats are more lively than some of the other volumes, but this is exactly what I have been looking for! The other Cafe del Mar's have taken a few listens before I really liked it, but I got into this one immediately. I try to work while listening to this and all of sudden I just get caught up in the grooves and forget about work. I am also a big fan of volume 7, but volume 5 doesn't have the prominent vocals of v.7 (not that either is bad or good- they are just different).

3 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2005-10-16

There are a few tracks that I really enjoyed, but on the whole I was disappointed with the CD.

Eclectic, emotionally smart, and always engaging to the ear, Volume Six won't disappoint followers of the Del Mar series. After a curious slice of Talvin Singh's "Traveller" (Kid Loco's Once upon a Time in the East mix), Afterlife get the slow dusk grooves moving with the seductively vocalized "Dub In Ya Mind (Beach Club Mix)" before A New Funky Generation slip in some grooves as smooth and of-the-'70s as their name suggests with "The Messenger."

However, Volume Six is often more poignant and melancholy than the usual Del mar compilation. dZihan & Kamien's "Homebase," while sporting an uptempo ambience, is spiritually destined for the subsonic bass groove of Deep Dish someday, and Humate's "3.2 Bedrock (Ambient Mix)" is the sort of ennui-filled dance music Madonna would be proud of. The hidden treasure on this volume is Moonrock's "111 Street Blues," a sumptuous downtempo stew of ambience, hip-hop, and ambient dub sensibilities. It helps make Volume Six the perfect destination for those seeking a spirited romantic beach vacation with their significant other in the living room. --Steffan Chirazi

5 out of 5 stars Soothing!.......2006-11-03

This is a great CD to listen to at work. It's a nice combination of soothing music and slightly up-tempo beats. Good stuff.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best CDs i own.......2006-08-08

this is my second time buying this CD because i left my first copy in the states and i could not live without it.

every single track on this CD is excellent. they all go together great, and this cd sets a great chillout mood.

the best cafe del mar CD of the collection, AND one of the best lounge CDs ever.

i highly recommend it, you cannot beat the price on amazon either.

5 out of 5 stars Jose Padilla is the king.......2006-03-11

I'm not a good writer, but I hope I can express to you how much I love this CD.

This CD is much like the Cafe Del Mar Vol 5 CD. Both have similiar format and the songs are a mix of some fun house music and some easy listening chill out music. Just like the Cafe Del Mar Vol 5 series, for me, the more I listened to this CD the more I loved it. Most of the songs you can listen to over and over and over again and never get tired of the pleasure they bring you.

Like all the Cafe Del Mar series they are perfect for almost any occassion. Personally, I love listening to this CD when I am with someone special or as I fall asleep at night.

Right now I am listening to track 13 which is "Adios Ayer", it is a wonderful song by Jose Padilla and I can't help but think he knew this was his last effort and he was telling us "Goodbye". Knowing this is somewhat sad, which really fits the mood of the song.

On slim chance that german girl named Caterina from Berlin ever reads this message I want to say "thank you" for telling me about this CD.

Also, if you do not already know this, Cafe Del Mar is perfect little Cafe on Island of Ibiza off the coast of Spain. Watching the sunset here is one of the things that everyone must do at least once in their lifetime. So thank you Cat, thank you Jose Padilla and thank you Cafe Del Mar.

4 out of 5 stars Another Really Good One.......2005-11-11

This is another really good Cafe Del Mar CD. It has a real "lay by the pool" and be "glad that you have nothing to do" feel.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable!.......2005-04-26

I origanlly bought this album only because it had the song "Beautiful" by Mandalay. Well, to my great surprise, the album as a whole is wonderfully poignant and mellow. Based mainly on ambient hip-hop sounds, Cafe Del Mar Vol. 6 is a great song to create, love and relax to. It is the definitive sound of beauty, and it is a trip into parallel realms of real music where the radio leaves us yearning for more. At times emotionally wrenching, yet optimistic at the same time, Cafe Del Mar Vol. 6 has great artists abound and shows off their incredible musical talents.

Hypnotic, dreamy but not as laid back as the 12th installment... but the series is more mature these days on applying more on the acoustic side rather than the electronic effects

5 out of 5 stars Good music.......2006-10-06

I bought the whole album because I fell in love with the very first song ('Heading for the Sunrise')when I heard it in a Greek beach bar. I simply loved it. Both CDs are great, but the second one I replayed three times in a row. Most of the songs have incredible orchestration and really sweet vocals, the songs are all well sang. Amazingly relaxing album, would definitely recommend.

An oasis of calm amidst the turbo-fueled clubbing tornado that is Ibiza, Café Del Mar is the White Isle's original home of red-eye chill-out vibes and weepy sunset soundtracks. The series of compilations bearing the bar's name, meanwhile, have long patented that authentic sound of Balearic bliss (even claiming Madonna as a huge fan), and this seventh volume maintains the high standards. Founding DJ Jose Padilla may have long moved on, but his successor, DJ Bruno, is clearly well aware of the old adage about not fixing what ain't broke. There's the usual mix of names well known (Moby, Bedrock, Nightmares On Wax) and head-scratchingly obscure (Uko, Lux, Aromabar), but the sound of beautiful music for loved-up and lazy beach bums stays the same. Frankly, this sounds as good at home as it does on the early-morning terraces of San Antonio. --Calvin Bush

The things I like about this CD are the same things one reviewer hates: the feminine vocals. The Moby track annoys me because the voice is electronic instead of natural, and I simply hate that. But everyone else seems to like it so don't pay attention to me. Other than that, this CD pretty much rocks, but it did take a few listens before I was competely into it. Tracks 2,5,7,and 10 are my personal faves. All in all, a great chillout CD!

While I've gradually acquired other titles in this line I have to say that Its the one that best soothes my frayed and tired nerves at the end of the day. Some tunes will literally have you crying out, "Take me away"!.... Ahhhhh... A nice cafe by the beach with some cold ones to sip while feeling the breeze and enjoying a glorious sunset. That in a nutshell keeps me coming back to this release.

5 out of 5 stars Again, this is the best of the collection.......2005-10-06

I normally wouldn't submit a review just to say "I totally agree with everything that he just said". Except in this case. I really enjoy the Cafe Del Mar collection even though many complain that the series is overproduced, too commercial, and generally not the best chill. This is not the time to seek to debunk those reviews. I just finished my collection of volumes 1-9 and wholeheartedly agree that this is the best of all. Volumes 1-2 have some good tracks, but the track flow lacks continuity in tempo and vibe. Volume 3 is closer but it is only in Volume 4 that Jose Padilla gets the full-on chill groove perfectly. Later cds are hit or miss (Volume 9 is back on track!). My two cents.

5 out of 5 stars The Best in the entire collection.......2004-12-17

Cafe Del Mar 4 (Volumen Cuatro) is by far my favorite. I have all the volumes to date, from 1 to 11, but was missing Volume 4, which I just picked up. I LOVE this CD!! Don't get me wrong, all the other Cafe Del Mar volumes are fair to good, with maybe 1 or 2 or 3 very good tracks on each of them. Despite these gems, most of the newer volumes (especially from Vol. 9 onward) tend to sound monotous--you know, the same beat, the same rhythm, the same "sound". But in Volume 4, every song has something new, different, and exciting to offer--and I just can't say that that is true with the other volumes. Volume 4 is the best ecclectic fusion of electronica, jazz, midtempo, and lounge of the bunch. Very cosmo!

5 out of 5 stars A Pearl of the Collection.......2004-09-29

'Cafe Del Mar 4' is one of the most melodic additions to the wonderful series which has come to dominate and perhaps even define the downtempo movement in modern popular music culture. This particular compilation combines a varied range of jazz-symphonic excellence with some edgier rhythms, most suitably espoused by Wasis Diop's No Sant featuring vocals by Lena Fiagbe. The breathtaking and jazzy culmination of this album is Stan Getz's Street Tattoo. The deft blending of natural sounds, such as crickets in the wild and a child's voice in Grillos by Paco Fernandes is simply inspired. Opening the album is the sensuous track Que Bonito by Jose Padilla, a electronic fusion of cymbalon, Spanish guitar, xylophone and bells in an altogether more uptempo arrangement. The energy of this track ordinarily would rule it out of the donwtempo genre, but juxtaposed with Talvin Singh's remix of John Martyn's Sunshines Better, it is a welcome compliment and in fact emphasizes the eclectic nature of this superlative member of the Café Del Mar family.

2 out of 5 stars Not the best CD of all the volumes.......2003-08-01

Well, this volume of Cafe Del Mar is pretty bad, the only good songs are:
Jose Padilla - Que Bonito
John Martyn - Sunshines Better
Chicane - Offshore (Ambient Mix)
Karen Ramirez - Troubled Girl (Spanish Version)
If you can only afford one CD, I will recommend "Cafe Del Mar Volume 9 or Volume 8", but not this one.

Amazon.com

This latest installment in the Café del Mar series, designed to defray the effects of Ibizan-type madness (or usher some in), sees the del Mar folks weaving together their most mature, confident, and well-placed aural massage yet. Sometimes it rolls across the ears like a slow, steamy, romantic rubdown, as on Digby Jones's "Piña Colada (Jazz Mix)," and at other times it evokes deep sunrise spiritualism, as on Mari Boine's superb "Gula Gula (Chillumanti Mix)." There are even some poignant and melancholic pressure points, such as Hollywood fave Thomas Newman's haunting "Any Other Name" (last heard on the American Beauty soundtrack). Also seemingly bound for soundtrack inclusion is Dido's "Worthless," which overflows with piano-tinged, jazzy trip-hop flavor. Whether used as a chill-out album, a warm-up collection, a record to dine with, or a romantic backdrop, Café del Mar, Vol. 8 will find good use in most contemporary lifestyles. --Steffan Chirazi

2 out of 5 stars Not Up To Standards.......2005-09-25

I found this CD to be disjointed and confusing in it's "feel". Not the type of Cafe Del Mar I enjoy.

1 out of 5 stars Scandalously dismal.......2004-12-25

Annoyingly, the lowest rating I can offer is ONE STAR. Way too much. How on earth is it possible to produce such complete drivel. From the first tedious 30 seconds of track one (I can't be bothered to turn the CD box over to see what the 'track' is called ... it simply doesnt matter), one's heart drops as you simply know you have been sold a total dog. Make no mistake this is a totally uninspired depressing groove-free load of tosh. The price they charge for these things is also incredible. For the cost I expect something really decent ... I have the receipt, and its going back. Generally CD's of this type are a bit of a lottery, I sense this is one CD in this series that never should have made it out of the re-cycling bin. Surely its a mistake! In a word, R U B B I S H .

5 out of 5 stars unique downtemp grooves.......2004-02-09

A year after buying Vol. 7 and Vol. 8, I still find myself spinning these grooves up. Timeless downtemp joy.

2 out of 5 stars Getting worse.......2003-05-01

It seems the Cafe Del Mar series just gets worse. Aside from Goldfrapp's introductory track (mesmerizing), and a funky Digby Jones track, this CD does not impress. It has a nice variety of musical styles, which I can appreciate, but get the first few Cafe Del Mar CDs before this one.

2 out of 5 stars NIce cover, disjointed content, not more than its parts.......2002-10-26

For some reason everyone has heard of the "Cafe Del Mar" series, and I'm convinced its as much the catchy series title as the quality of the work. It tends to be the love of public radio music shows also (see KCRW, Santa Monica, CA). Probably the label had a lucky ride on the early 1990s sudden penchant for lounge/ambient/chill etc. and the series was initially quite novel, but has since been overtaken.

The main problem is the jarring styles jammed on to this and the other disc, you have reggae, samba/latin, jazz, R&B, soul, trip hop, new age for goodness sake, the obligatory French female vocal (beloved of all chill) vying for your ear. The sum is not more than the parts here, if someone made you this compilation out of their music collection you might think it was Ok, but not to shell out serious bucks for. This particular compilation delves dangerously close to some new age soundtrack for meditation. For example, the famous Thomas Newman piano piece is a bad choice. The bane of a thousand movie soundtracks its very sad, and will make you weep into your pine colada. Then this is followed by a jolly summer day "Girl from Ipanema" style samba-acoustic guitar piece. Yikes.

Compare the genius of Thievery Corporation or Kruder and Dorfmeister for making something thematically unified, which just "sounds right", out of other people's songs. Here, however, you are painfully aware that, "now its time for the cool "French" vocal, now its time for the reggae one, etc."

Look, if it works for you fine ambient, pleasant enough for the beach, but its just not the transcendent experience all many reviews [make] it up to be. But I think the Cafe Del Mar series has worn out its welcome after the departure of uber chill meister Padilla.

There are much better choices out there, see anything by Thievery Corporation, K&D, Air etc. Oh and for summer beach listening, the more obscure "Cafe Ibiza," or anything by Costes. And it terms of value, see the Budda Bar series or Verve Remixed or any other two disc collections that give a lot of more value, and arguably a lot more of a consistent feel.

5 out of 5 stars pretty jazzy.......2006-04-18

This is an excellent CD. Every song belongs on the disc (except
"time is the enemy" by Quantic, although an excellent song, it is too upbeat for this CD and could have been replaced by something from the Knighthawks. This song can be found also on Private Lounge 3, of which I own, and the song by Quantic was a purchasing point for me to buy the CD, so don't take this opinion in the wrong way or out of context.). All of these songs keep a tight knit from one song to the other - this has made it into my top 3 CD's out of 50 something.

If you like this album, or haven't purchased it, you should check out some albums by Praful at the same time, you're sure to enjoy.

Again, this is a great disc.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2004-12-10

This compilation is so soothing. you can just sit down with a drink in your hand and let your mind wander as you listen to the blissful tunes coming from this cd. Its simply brilliant, a perfect way to spend a chilled out evening as you maybe watch the sun set on a golden beach. If you dont have a beach, dont worry, listening to this cd will make you think you were on a sunset beach in Ibiza.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2003-08-29

This is chill music for the soul, music to live by. One beautiful track after another. It has played non-stop on my various CD players since I got it 5 months ago...and I am not even close to growing tired of it. Rather, it has become like oxygen. I can't live without.

Every CD in the del Mar series is worth its weight in gold, but this one can be weighted with a far more precious metal. I would need to be a poet to say more about this wonderful compilation. But I must mention track 5: it is a highlight among bright stars. Never have I heard such smooth and darkly elegant guitar work, all of course backed by a first-class chill groove.

Plug your soul into this CD...you will be transported to a lovely place.

5 out of 5 stars A New Refreshing Album With A New DJ.......2003-07-08

Well, I first heard their music from their album VOLUMEN OCHO. Though I really hate the cover, still, the music is wonderful. Then, when this new album arrives, I wonder whether I can buy it or not ( NB : See the prize and you'll know what I mean ). Finally I buy it and I really enjoy it. Everything is nice, the music, the booklet, and mostly, the video they put on this CD. But very unfortunately, the track that is perhaps the best one, Rajamanta ( i.e. last track ), can't play except you turn the video. I really wonder why such an unfortunate thing can happen.
But don't be so dissapointed, the tracks are wonderful. My favorites are :
- Jo Manji : Beyond The Sunset
- Kalioppe : Lunar Landings
- ? : Desire
The others are nice but, for me, not the best. If you are a CAFE DEL MAR's fan, better buy this one.

4 out of 5 stars not bad though the brand is a little tired.......2006-06-05

One of my favourite tracks ever from the series is the last track on Volumen Ocho, Plum Crazy by Celestial. And if you like that sound, then you'll love the albums from Hong Kong's Celestial. Check them out, they are titled:

Hong Kong Dub Station
Happy Valley
Spirit House

it's a deeper dubbier sound that most of Cafe Del Mar, more real instruments, and more space...

3 out of 5 stars Not the best in the series.......2006-05-26

I love some of the previous CDM cd's in the series, but this one is definitely disappointing. Nothing inspiring or innovative. My favourites in the4 CDM series are numbers 4, 9, 11 and the 25th Anniversary Addition.

2 out of 5 stars Cafe Del Mar contact Blank and Jones.......2006-05-19

I agree with Mr."Graduate Student" in that Cafe Del Mar has lost something with this latest CD. Where has the effort gone in this production? Sure it's relaxing, but it's just not entertaining. Blank and Jones have taken over the trend with their new Relax II CD. Check it out. It may fill the void while CDM gets it together.

4 out of 5 stars It all depends on what you expect from these 2 CDs.......2006-04-24

If you're expecting to find more of those dynamic rythyms and beats from volumes 1-7, you will be sorely disappointed, as I was.

However, after listening to the tracks together with my own playlist songs, it starts to grow on you! After I took about a week to forget about the disappointment in the noticeable shift in the flavour of the Cafe Del Mar series, Volume 12 slowly began to stand out in its own merits. Like the earlier volumes, it is a chill out CD, but far more mellow and relaxing. With tracknames like "Lazy Lounging", you can't really expect tunes as catchy as ones earlier in the series.

In fact, the music from this collection is so relaxing, that you just can't help but laze around to them. Its so difficult to get to work (like preparing for my college exams). If I'm working on my stuff and songs from this volume plays, I'll start to sit back and daydream. But that might just be me.

The high quality of tracks is consistent throughout the 2 CDs, and it is difficult to single out good ones without naming half the tracks from the entire volume. I would recommend at least these few tracks, which are what I find captures the essence of the Volume 12 spirit.
05 - Another Day
06 - Antologia Cafe Del Mar
14 - Bailando Va

I can't help but paint a picture of the imaginary dreamlike place this 2 CDs always seem to whisk me away to.

If Cafe Del Mar Vol.12 is like your weekend away to a nice relaxing mediterranean beach resort, then CD1 would represent your arrival at the beach, and once you unpack, you lazily lounge away the entire day away, relaxing and watching the sunset sipping endless cocktails with tiny paper umbrellas on them.

CD2 would represent the 2nd day of your mini holiday, bringing slightly more upbeat tunes more suitable for a day filled with parties and games by the beach, while still retaining the relaxing chill-out mellowness characteristic of this volume.

The last few tracks of CD2 are a little more solemn though, suitably wrapping up the dreamy episode.

I admit that I seemed to be describing an experience, than writing a 'review' of this compilation. But an experience is exactly what the Cafe Del Mar series has always brought to its listeners. Well, a tad more mellow this time.

Just remember, like what a few previous reviews have mentioned, if you're expecting music from the single-digit volumes, stay clear of this "tiki-torch party" muzak. If you'd like something different for a change (like when you first bought your Cafe Del Mar CD), this volume would grow on you fast. Having said that, I'd still wish for the series to return to its previous style of the earlier volumes (eg. 6th, 7th).

1 out of 5 stars Very Poor Quality, Unfortunately.......2006-03-16

This is the first review I have written on Amazon, and I am doing so only because this CD is so bad. I have every other Cafe Del Mar Vols 1 - 11, and while there is some variation in quality, I have generally enjoyed them all. Overall, the Cafe Del Mar (CDM) series is undoubtedly my favorite ambient / chillout compilation.

Volume 12 is the first in the series to lose its edge, and it has an elevator pop music feel to it. Whereas the prior volumes had legitimate bands on it (Lamb, Talvin Singh, Dzihan & Kamien, etc), this is no longer the case, and it is obvious from the quality of this CD. I actually went to the CDM website and cross-referenced the CD to make sure I hadn't bought a fake imitation CD. Really disappointing.

The producers of CDM may have boosted it to 2 CDs while keeping the same budget for artist fees, hoping to increase profit margins due to a higher priced double CD set with the same production costs, capitalizing on name rather than quality. Of course, this is all speculation, but it fits with what they have done here (first double CD, first reduction in artist quality). Perhaps I'm being cynical and they are just looking for a new sound; if so, they should just fire their marketing department. To be more balanced, from the reviews below, some people do enjoy the CD, so you may as well. However, if you have enjoyed the sound of prior CDMs, make sure to listen to this one before buying, as it is very "fluffy" compared to the others.

Unless you are looking for unobtrusive background music for a tiki torch party, please steer clear of this CD. Buy any of the other CDMs, in fact; they are all solid and each has a unique sound. Hopefully, low sales of this CD will compel CDM to put out a Vol 13 that is more consistent with the quality of the rest of their line. If not, it least Hotel Costes hasn't taken a nosedive yet.
