A Remarkable Improvement.......2007-06-21
Over the Destination Rio album, that is. I was so turned off from that album, I probably put up my most negative review ever on this site. There wasn't a fresh spark to it, and it was lacking in sampling what's new and out there. But this one - Latin Vibes, is a major improvement. Admittedly, I didn't know it was Kinkysweet putting it together (I still check out Seamless "BarGrooves" albums from time to time. Had I known, I might've passed based on the Destination album. But I was very pleasantly surprised with this one (although I have yet to give it the test in a computer).
One of the more impressive things about the album is it's truthfulness in the title. It's more of an overall latin vibe... not just "Brazilian Electronica", but there's also Spanish influenced music as well and some great latin house & jazz. Very neat blends. So as not to go through two discs of songs, expect to hear a deep beat, excellent flute work, acoustic guitar and neat effects in the music. A really cool, tripped out latin experience in general, highlighted by Moodswings, Shawn Ward, Favela 5 and others. And that's CD1. CD2 starts out a bit shaky, but eventually warms up. Mondomo's track is a throw-away IMO - I never got into it when I first heard it on Cafe Copacabana. A bit too... not over the top, but the electronic voice takes away from the tune and is a sample that should've been left out. But the entire album really does have a sort of ambient vibe, even if the bossa feels a bit too dramatic. Some top cuts there were Malena's "No Me Digas Nada" (remember their popular "Para Ti" fro ma while back). This track reminds me of some of the old S-Tone Inc. songs from the early 2000's with Manuela Ravagliolli (SP?). Great soul! I thought "Fireside" was pretty interesting too.. nice little touch there with the horns, has a real sort of "Sunset on the West Coast USA" feel. Then the album ends with a pretty dreamy song dedicated to a giant melting pot of latin culture (today), Miami.
So this is a pretty good compilation. Real ambient, latin vibes perfect for lounging. Granted I couldn't listen to disc two all the way through, but there are some terrific songs here. Admittedly, I've had this one for a while but never tried to load it into the pc for iTunes or Rhapsody, Media Player etc. so I couldn't tell you if the wretched copy protect is still on this. If so, I'll adjust the star ranking tomorrow. :) Otherwise, it's a pleasant enough album - not a Brazilectro/Brazilution or Brazilian Love Affair threat by any stretch, but a cut above the criminally priced "Cafe Copacabana" import and obviously better than Frequent Flyer: Rio. So if you like this, check out Brazilectro and Nova Latino. You definitely want to catch the "Latin Deluxe" series, although it's hard to find now. And you'll probably like "New Latinaires" too.
Great CD!.......2007-05-21
When I first listened to this CD, I thought I had made a mistake. However, after forcing myself to listen to it more, I have come to love it!

If you fancy something chilled out & relaxing but with some deep & sophisticated latin vibes check out Kinkysweet's first release in their new 'Vibes' series of CD compilations (future 'Vibes' to include jazz, disco, funk etc). "Latin Vibes: Lounge Selection" reflects and collects on an array of production talent from some of the worlds coolest labels including, HiTop, Lovemonk, Papa & Freerange as well as introducing 14 (yes 14!) previously unreleased tracks making it a must have for both the sophisticated music fan & DJ alike.
The album is an intriguing exploration of how the many forms of latin music have subtly infiltrated the consciousness of so many of today's contemporary producers representing the new, sophisticated tastes of a wider audience. A perfect accompaniment to the poolside, beach or barbeque, this classy selection incorporates a wonderful balance of style & substance where the traditional rhythms of Latin America blend smoothly with cutting edge contemporary production values and soulful musicality, taking you on a smooth evocative sun drenched trip from Rio to Madrid and back, all from the cool and comfort of your convertible...

Decent Downtempo.......2007-01-16
I agree with the other reviewers; there are a bunch of really good head nodder tracks in this mixed bag of chilled out house music. The album is titled "Universal Vibes" and that seems to be a pretty accurate reflection of the diversity of the tracks in this mix. Some of the tracks really come alive and sound like the kinds of things you'd hear in a lounge/club atmosphere. I really dig this music for studying, hanging out with friends and having some background tunes, etc.
My one complaint is that several of the tracks have an annoying sax line. I like saxophone, but it's synthesized saxophone, and it just sounds like a cheap sitcom tune. Eh, can't have everything..the album does lose a star for it though.
Ok I am digging this CD.......2002-01-11
I got it on a hunch. It is a mix bag of chill housey type music. Some real head nodders on it. Highlights are come alive and Beautiful smile.
I love this CD.......2001-08-03
Great tripping music, even if you don't use anything! I love this CD - hypnotic, relaxing, groovy, jazzy...
Chill out at its best!!.......2001-07-29
If you like CDs like "Cafe Del Mar" and "Buddha Bar", this CD is for you!!!! A mixed of jazzy electronic worldbeat with instrumental tracks and songs in English, Portuguese and French. I love this CD!!!!!

Incognito's third album nods to the influences that ground their jazz-funk-and-soul jams. The 11-member band adds a Latin feel to a snazzy cover of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry 'Bout a Thing," while "Magnetic Ocean" has a Weather Report-in-ballad-mode vibe. "Change" combines Maysa Leak's Chaka Khan-like power with sweeping Soul II Soul-ish strings, and "Need to Know" gives props to Roy Ayers (check the clavinet) and Rick James (horn section). The band is at its best showcasing Leak or featuring soloists, as on "Colibri" and the Mandrill-ish "Closer to the Feeling." Still, some attempts fall flat, like the syrupy "L'Arc en Ciel de Miles" that's more Chuck Mangione than Prince of Darkness. This one's for smooth-jazz aficionados; Brit-funk fans should check the band's later fare. --Suzanne McElfresh

Good music is good music.......2006-11-25
Ain't no doubt about it, this is good music. No correction; this is great music. The Cogs brought their A game on this one. It really is a standout release. Highlights are numerous, but the one that knocks me out is Maya's powerhouse delivery on I Love What You Do For Me. Man! Such emotion.....and what a voice!!! Do yourself a favor and pick this one up.
Nominee: Most Refreshing Musicians - Incognito.......2006-03-15
I have been a fan of the musical genius Bluey and this band of musicians for many years; and they continue to amaze me with their dynamic sound. The refreshing brand of music that Incognito continues to create is a real delight and totally overshadows the roster of manufactured faddish so-called performers currently getting radio airplay. A must have for your Incognito CD collection!
Love it.......2002-08-22
I have three CDs by Incognito: Tribes, Vibes & Scribes, Positivity, and 100 Degrees and Rising, and this is my favorite of the three. For some reason, "Don't You Worry 'Bout A Thing" is my absolute favorite track...it gives me goosebumps every time I hear it. :)
Get up to get down and Jam!.......2001-03-28
Well, let me tell you that this cd is a star bright and prue delight...so good that you want to hold on tight all thru the night..cause you might lose yourself in the sweet harmony of incognito! I first brought this cd after listen to Incognito's greatest hit's(Japan Import version) which of the meter also,I fell in love with "Change" and "Colibri"...
It makes you want to holla like Mavin Gaye!
If you into real R&B Please pick up this cd!

You won't regret it! Peace
Something's lost in the translation of Incognito's "Scribes".......2000-08-15
After some respectable but unremarkable work in the late eighties, British jazz/funk/soul outfit made a wise move in the early nineties with the hiring of vocalist Maysa Leak. Her rich vocals have a honey-colored tone all their own, and she skillfully manages to sound emotionally powerful while maintaining a silky-smooth nuance that makes it all sound effortless. Unfortunately, the material on hand for her Incognito debut, 1993's "Tribes Vibes & Scribes," shows there was still room for improvement.
The most noticeable problem is Leak's lack of elbow room. She's only featured on five tracks, and while she handles them beautifully they don't use her talents to their full potential. The scatted samba "Colibri" is enjoyable, but the repetitive vocal runs leave Maysa the chance to do little else but go through the motions. "Change" is a midtempo delight, featuring lush strings and a trademark Incognito drum lick behind Leak's masterful vocal, but "I Love What You Do for Me" is so strikingly similar it's a surprise some sort of production tooling wasn't attempted. "River of My Dreams" gets off to a dreamy a capella start, but ends up robbed at a length of barely more than a minute.
Of course, this wouldn't be as obvious if the instrumental material were stronger. And while the Yellowjackets-flavored "Magnetic Ocean" and the slinky "Tribal Vibes" deliver, fare like "Closer to the Feeling" and "Pyramids" sound like watered-down Brand New Heavies, closer to the realm of smooth-jazz than the funk that is obviously being attempted. But Maysa's fifth track is worth the price of admission all on its own: her flawless and spirited vocal take a Latin-flavored, horn-laden rendition of Stevie Wonder's "Don't You Worry Bout a Thing" to the realm of brilliance, making for one of the band's most memorable moments.
Completists of either Incognito or Maysa Leak will no doubt want this in their collection; there are definitely enough worthwhile moments to make it a wise purchase. But in hindsight, "Tribes Vibes & Scribes" is somewhat of a low watermark for a band whose artistry would later reach high tide.

good smoking music.......2007-01-04
this is a chill album with some good beats. it's not as good as the first one but there are some great songs on it. the whole thing is great as background music
Excellent.......2005-10-28
I'm coming from hearing Export quality first, then Desi Vibes (remastered). I thought Export quality to be an EXCELLENT album, very infectious. It's got that dance music done right kind of feeling to it. And if that makes you shudder, keep in mind that by 'done right' I mean produced well, creatively arranged and done with a quality aesthetic which holds throughout the album. Desi vibes is a little more stripped down, and a little more raw than export quality. Export quality shows a direct evolution in the production of their music, but desi vibes just has that rhythmic looped grit that Export quality JUST evades. The CD is very rhythmic, with various eastern instruments, scratches, one mc, and a plethora of creative and enjoyable melodies - while kicking out that constant beautiful backbone hip hop breakbeat.
The music is upbeat, well crafted and layered. Excellent, excellent CD. Has been in rotation constantly
the drone that refreshes.......2005-09-27
I loved Dum Dum Project's subsequent album, Export Quality, but apparently for the wrong reasons. I love this album too, let's hope for better reasons.
My favorite track is Mind Expansion, whose eternal loop blends what sounds like a clueless tourist's question with a more dedicated practitioner's command. Jackson Heist is a close second, somehow combining a relentless beat with a loose sashay. Also frequently resident in my player is In Flight, which lives up to its name (somehow I feel I should be lining up at Customs when it's over ... OK, OK, I realize they're based in NY).
But the whole album hangs together - the drone that refreshes.
(Note: I am listening to the earlier 1999 edition, but for this review I don't incluide the 3 tracks that this new 2004 edition lacks.)
Outstanding East-West fusion CD.......2004-07-08
This is my favorite CD. It's a great, lively, tap-your-feet, east-west fusion CD. Here's what it's not:
- too dancey/hip-hop
- too indian
- too anything
It's an especially awesome train/car commute CD - keeps you awake and humming along. Buy this now!!

Album Description
Continuing with the Latin theme set out in the first album of the Vibes Series (Latin Vibes: Lounge Selection) we see further exploration of South America's influence on a myriad of contemporary dance music producers. The sun has set on a day's loungin' on the beach and the tempo is increased; as the action moves decidedly onto the dancefloor for the evening.
Respectful of the music's history, the artists here obviously know their stuff, effortlessly blending the old with the new. We hear traditional South American-influenced musicality and organic Latin rhythms weave their magic through a solid backbone of contemporary house grooves and energetic beats.
Latin Vibes 2: Club Selection is compiled and mixed by England's Mettle Music and features some of the biggest names dominating the world's more discerning clubs today including Ananda Project, Kenny Dope, SUMO, Faze Action, Wagon Cookin and John Beltran.
Customer Reviews:
Solid selection.......2006-04-28
I have a bad habit of expecting too much from a cd. That was not the case for these cd's. I found 6-7 songs on here to be absolutely stunning. 7,8,9 on cd1 had me driving w/out a care in the world.
But what kept it from getting 5 stars was that there are quite a few songs that are just too "sporatic" for my taste. But all in all it is a very good cd for the "discerning" grown-up trendsetters. Me, i like it a bit more playful.
Brazilian Flavoured Funk.......2005-10-27
If you're into Latin deep house and lounge you will love this cd. My favorites are Coconut Lounge, Salsa D, and Latin Horns, but you will not be dissapointed by any track on this 2xcd compilation. A must have for your collection if you're into this type of music.

Best Of The St. Moritz Series!.......2007-02-04
Every single track hits the mark, more so than on any of the other St. Moritz albums. The intro of "Come On Baby Light My Fire" by Astrud Gilberto was breathless, campy, fun, and chilled me to the bone! The third track was a cool/hip number by the Street Thugs (I generally don't like rap sounds much, but this one was very cool stuff).
All the tunes are integrated well, and that is what makes this collection probably the best in the St. Moritz series. I just had to smile out loud when I hear the spanish version of "Spinning Wheel" - These are tunes you will play at your next party or evening with friends. I don't recommend the St. Moritz "Vibes #3" in the series, but the "Les Fleurs de Mais" #4 is also highly recommended.
music-licious.......2004-04-08
This compilation Suite Royale is awesome. We play it at our restaurant and not only do we love it but our guests are constantly asking us to write down the name for them. The perfect music to kick it to with a bunch of friends over a few drinks and eats. Cheers....to another must have CD by Jimmy Cohrssen
Suite Royale.......2004-04-05
I have had a copy of the CD for quite awhile now, and play it at least once a day. It is my "fix." The wonderful sounds fill my office, and I find that I am getting up from my desk to move my body and forget about work. It is just "fun" to listen to. I encourage everyone to listen to this CD and enjoy.
Great CD.......2004-04-05
i llllooooove his kenzo CD. and this CD has a different feeling than his kenzo CD. it's more loungy type of CD, where you can have it in background with bunch of people hanging out.
This album is a "Baby Maker".......2004-04-04
ok, so I got this one because I liked his other compilations (especially the Kenzo set!!) and this one went on the iPod immediately. Give it a listen if you want some swanky dinner party music or a smooching by the fire soundtrack. Frankly, if he wants to DJ my bedroom antics, that'd be fine too!
