"Living Stereo" was the name of RCA'S highest quality recordings. The three major labels, RCA, Columbia and Capitol all invested large amounts of money and effort to improve, indeed, perfect the new LP stereo recordings of the 1950's. This album presents a good example of RCA's labor and technology. Although some of these songs are generations old and recorded on rather primitive equipment, they still sound great. Thanks to digital technology, these precious gems sound better today than they did when they were first recorded almost 50 years ago. I bought the LP, then the cassette version so I could listen to it in my car as I traveled the Pacific Northwest selling records and tapes to retailers. You will enjoy listening to the harmony of this cowboy classic.

As a small child in the early 1960's, I was given an EP of four songs that were originally on the COOL WATER album (these were: "Cool Water," "Tumbling Tumbleweeds," "The Last Round-up" and "Ghost Riders In The Sky"). At the time, I didn't know who the Sons Of The Pioneers were and had never heard any of their music. Long story short-- I LOVED that record. So, many years later, when the opportunity presented itself, I gladly bought the LP.

This early stereo recording (1959) is a marvel. Traditional cowboy songs with a full (yet not intrusive) orchestra. Gorgeous harmonies, classic tunes and excellent sound. COOL WATER is a truly great album that all fans of traditional American music should own. Highest recommendation.

the songs where sung by some of the oldest western singers in the 20th century, such as autry murphy and roy rogers.
the group was called the sons of the pioneers and if you consider that the wild west still was in the early `900's and tombstone still had stages and sherrifs you can see why.
if you truly like REAL country or western music, then sons of the pioneers is for you

5 out of 5 stars Stands Alone In Time & Genres.......2007-01-09

First the history of this album for me, then my impressions of the CD.

As a kid, we'd leave my hometown of Tulsa and make the drive to my Great-Grandparents' home, in the little town of Holdenville, Oklahoma. While the adults hung up coats and fixed lunch and talked and talked and TALKED, I'd race to the back room.

The back room had tinkertoys, a handful of trinkets gathered from local eating establishments, but for me it mainly had a record player and a stack of records.

It didn't take me long to figure out that very little of my Great-Grandparents' music was going to appeal to me; however, among the stack, I found this album. I loved it immediately and played it every time we went to their house.

Years later I inherited that album, but by that time a bad needle had ruiend the recording and none of the digital "tricks" I had could resurrect it.

Fast-forward to today, and the CD arrives!

As you might imagine, I had high expectations for this CD. Not only does it meet my expectations, it completely exceeds it.

First, the songs are of course exactly as I remember. However, it's like a veil has been lifted between me and the performace... this isn't sound in a groove coming from a cone, they're performing in the room! I'd forgotten how irresistable it is to harmonize with them.

The dynamics are at least as wide as on the album, actually wider because there's no "overload" point where it turns to fuzz. Voices truly soar.

The recordings, while focused on the nartually-eq'd voices, are deep, rich, full, clear, crisp and fresh. This is a very well-balanced recording!

O.K, finally, this is a recording from analog tape form 1959... how's the hiss?

ABSENT.

No joke. I like to think I've got pretty sensitive ears, and I'm not hearing ANY tape noise even at loud volumes. Absolute worst noise is the slightest 60 cycle hum at the beginning or end of one or two tracks when one mic is open by itself. Frankly, I'm not convinced I'm hearing that! I don't know if the RCA producers were magicians with analog tape, or if the company that mastered this CD figured out how to take out the hiss without disturbing the rest of the music... but it is whisper-quiet. the CD label says "Advanced Noiseshaping Redither," and maybe that's the magic... whatever it is, WOW!

In very brief moments, to only the slightest degree, is there a hint of analog overload, but it NEVER distracts from the music and is only a surprise because you almost forget this isn't a full-digital recording!

If you have the SLIGHTEST interest in the Sons of The Pioneers, cowboy music, or simply want an excellent example of what the medium was / is capable of, please do yourself a favor and get this CD!

P.S. - An added bonus for me: ironically, my Great-Grandparent's copy was MONO. Obviously, these recordings were meant to be heard in stereo. If you listen to the files on this page, you'll hear some of the problems of listening in mono: phase issues, etc. Buy this, and listen through headphones for best effect.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Western Songs By A Great Group.......2006-08-09

This CD has some great songs sung by The Sons of the Pioneers. Ridin Home, Way Out There and Riders in the Sky are outstanding. This is the group that carried on after Bob Nolan retired. The singer who sounds like Bob Nolan is Tommy Doss who does a great job on Riders in the Sky and others. I bought this album in 1959 when it was originally available, and am happy it is now on CD.

Yeah, it is Father's Day and I'm not yet or ever the 1st born son but....I do like this blues just especially for today. I like Sugar Sweet on it best, piano is so pretty, this album has that and more. It's a test of time album. (Now a CD, or whatever we say now, tunes that fly in ether in our down load universes)
Trying to think of a good way to say hello to Father's Day 2007.

I had "Fathers And Sons" by Master Waters on a way olllllllld copied cassette but it kind of died a slow dissolving death ( this was from about my life circa 1970 and I wasn't in a cradle) Sad, yet in two seconds on my new MacBook which I dearly love I found it again. Yeah. Mine was actually not good sound compared to the remastered sound here. A gift from a friend in about 1971. He was an older neighborhood brother of a girlfriend a then techno super kid ....Way cool kid. Garage player, guitarist. (Liked my 'art') had a tape player and speakers the size of a car. In days when wires and speakers, turntables, amps, equalizers, and for some reason cement blocks and boards seemed mandatory in every guys space. Or milk crates. And we STILL HAVE THAT LOOK IN OUR GARAGE. WHY????????

Muddy Waters sings you through father's day....this album has lots of energy.
It really is a classic to get, or recall, or rehear, play. The one I miss hearing.
'You Feel So Good', it lifts the soul. Even a soul left, standing on Dad's Day, alone, staring, looking at ...another's Dad Day that is so fast, too fast, here already. Another day to spend with the personal truths and tracks of fathers or just hosting the bar. Or as we are doing ....we plan...to relax....not think too much.
For some of us(okay, me) it's a very complex day. So...the Blues.

It's ...maybe my favorite Waters and I just down-loaded it from my iStore.
I like how they call it "my" iStore. Sure. Yeah...it's mine. I'm maybe born to jive. But am I stupid? Yeah I guess that too. So now I own my iStore. Hey, why are all these other folk in my store all the time?

So, yeah, this is official, it is my favorite Muddy Waters. Why not, gotta pick one.
Do you know it? You'll hear a thread of it in a lot of music you might listen to-try 'I Live the Life I Love....sounds like..... You'll know it. Cold on a page looks a little harsh, sung you end up headshakin. It was all Muddy in music I loved a few father's day back.
But you Dad's will remember. ...well you old Dad's will. Ha.

Opens with The Daddy's Lament...'working hard all my life, now I'm getting pushed around' yeah the ole time daddy song...oh, All Aboard's really the name.... actually which is sweet. Really.
So let's haul in the blues and grab a way to say it hurts a little bad today..You Can't Lose What You Ain't Never Had, no you can't. No little girl can't loose something she ain't never had. What a great tune. Perfect on Daddy's day....you need to listen to the playing on this one. Maybe not your perfect. Pick yours.

"Don't Say I don't love you just cause I stayed out all night long....you know I'm a country boy." ..there is this clanging part beating in this I love. I actually sing this one. Full of exactly what I feel. Exactly. I'm ready, ready as anybody can be....Happy Father'sDay, country DSad. Let it all go, you can't fix what done broke anyhow.

Just the same this album has it all.

Just to celebrate I downloaded this, listened, toasted my daughter, hugged my son,waved at Jack who was looking for cover, saluted the moon, wept at a star, forgave a few j-birds and let myself feel the love of a Dad (who kinda darkened my childhood). And babe, that ain't so easy with all the buzzing in this head.

The greats such as Otis Spann, Paul Butterfield, and Buddy Miles, who join "papa" Muddy Waters on this album make for some blues in the best tradition. I love jammin' with it on my harmonica. This became my favorite Muddy Waters album after the first time I listened to it. I think you will too.

5 out of 5 stars Once A Measure of Hipness.......2007-04-10

Back when Fathers and Sons was originally issued, I was in the ninth grade. As kids in those days seemed to have broader musical tastes than many kids do today, whether or not you owned and liked Fathers and Sons quickly became a measure of musical hipness. Unfortunately, it seems that many of the older kids who were musically hip were also getting in trouble all the time, so it was a little difficult to be a big blues fan and not be seen as at least a potential troublemaker. But looking back, its amazing that we were sharp enough to detect the quality in the play of those who have stood the test of time.
Paul Butterfield and Mike Bloomfield were both young white blues heroes of the time and they introduced many thousands of suburban white kids to the black "old masters" of the Chicago blues scene. Chief among these old masters were guys like Muddy Waters and Otis Spann, both of whom are featured on this album. The symbiosis that took place when guys like Butterfield and Bloomfield were on the front lines learning the blues became beneficial to both the old masters and the young turks. With the aid of guys like Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf, white blues players gained both invaluable on-stage experience as well as the acceptance and grudging respect of black blues aficionados. What the old masters gained was access to the ears and to the purchasing power of millions of young white kids who would otherwise have remained largely ignorant of the blues scene.
Fathers and Sons is one of the fruits born of that symbiotic relationship. Though both Bloomfield and Butterfield died young, they are still looked at today as titans of the blues renaissance of the late 1960s. As for Muddy Waters and Otis Spann, what real blues fan is not hugely familiar with their work? Throw in old session stalwarts Donald Dunn, Sam Lay and Buddy Miles and you have the ingredients for a smash album.
I don't really have any favorites here, yet there is not a single song I dislike. For a measly ten bucks or so, the listener gets not only the original album, but also four songs not on the original. Those who hadn't heard the album yet will find on listening that they are probably familiar with a few of the cuts that have been covered by others.
In retrospect, Fathers and Sons stands as one of the great albums of the 1960s. If you like the blues, particularly of the Chicago strain, then you should own this.

Fathers and Sons is a classic. I first owned it on vinyl, then 7 track, then cassette now CD. This is a classic for any blues and Chicago blues lover! How can you beat Bloomfield, Waters, Spann, Bloomfield, Booker T and Buddy Miles all together? Slide it in, lay back and go for an awesome trip back to the 60's when this sort of jam drove thousands wild!

I'm so happy, after all these years, to have finally broken down and bought Twin Sons of Different Mothers rather than debate it for 30 years. Liking all kinds of music, I have a special place in my heart for "muzak," particularly world and smooth jazz, so whoever has been giving all of the other reviewers here neggies for liking it, go ahead and get mine over with right now as well.

True, you hear several tracks from this wonderful collaberation in the halls of shopping centers and on very light stations, but I also find it easy to listen to in the car and quite romantic all at once. Weisberg's flute is a major attraction for yours truly, and Fogelberg's acoustic guitar playing compliment's his style perfectly. Best tracks are breezy "Lazy Susan," exotic Brazilian "Guitar Etude No.3," haunting "Paris Nocturne," a lovely remake of the old Judy Collins song, "Since You've Asked," and the powerful, wonderfully pretentious "Power of Gold."

If you like your music to be muzak from time to time, I definitely recommend this disc to take the edge off a lousy day or just because you're mellow. Good stuff from two talented musicians whose styles really aren't that far apart in the first place.

I purchased this CD way back when it first came out and over the years and several moves later it "disappeared". I'm glad I deceided to buy it again. This is great "drive music" from two like minded free-form artists. Upbeat and refreshing are the keywords here. I'm no music critic as you can tell, but I know what I like in music and this fits the bill.

Mr. Weisberg or whoever controls the rights to your outstanding late-1970s album "Night Rider!", please consider releasing it on CD. "Won't be comin' back" is one of my very favorite songs. Thanks.

For those of you who haven't noticed, this extraordinary album has finally been remastered (the sound is great!)and is now available as a Japanese import that comes housed in a beautiful, mini vinyl sleeve. I hope you true Dan Fogelberg fans out there will buy this, so that Sony Music (Japan) will continue to remaster Dan's backcatalogue. Can't wait to get my hands on the remastered versions of "Nether Lands" and "The Innocent Age".

I have'nt heard this music in decades. As soon as i started playing the CD, I was back in high school again with my high school sweetheart. Good music, good memories. A good buy at a good price.

I first encountered this on cassette, quite by accident. It later became the background for my work at morning at the easel painting watercolours. But this is no wallpaper music. The technical genius of matching separate recordings of different trumpet parts is surpassed only by Marsalis's bright and lively technique. The masters would be pleased. As for the watercolours, I can now stand before them and see the music's influence on paper. Well worth the listening...

This cd features a lot of Wynton's earlier piccolo playing, which, while perhaps not as brilliant as you'd hear on his Gabriel's Garden album, is slightly more refined and appropriate to the repertoire. That isn't to say he doesn't embellish; The Fasch concerto has some tastefully inserted ornaments. "Let the Bright Seraphim" is as well played with soprano Edita Gruberova as it is in Wynton's later recording with Kathleen Battle. The Purcell selections on the album are probably the best examples of good piccolo playing I've found, particularly the trills. One only need listen to the "Entrada" to see how delicate and refined the playing on the whole album is.

Marsalis' prodigious talent coupled with the greatest of Baroque brass composers is a combination that cannot be beat! Of course, Anthony Newman takes everything (less the slow stuff, of course) at his characteristic "lively" pace, but Marsalis keeps up. His execution of the ornamentation is awesome! Gotta have this one!

Without doubt, the birthday ode to Queen Anne (Eternal Source of Light Divine) is one of the loveliest pieces ever. Couple that with two of the most accomplished talents in the world, you have a near spiritual moment. Even those with even a passing interest in the classics will find this a stirring expierence. this is true candy for the ear and food for the soul.

This is CD "Sons of Sumerled" is the first works of Steve McDonald I have listened to. I read here on Amazon he has other works. I was in a Mall store that specializes in crystal work, and this most beautiful music was playing, so I hung around, trying to find a loved one a crystal Angel. After three songs, I had to ask who is this. Lucky for me, they are playing and selling this wonderful work of beauty.....

After three songs, I bought two, on a gamble the rest of the CD would be good. One for me, and one for an Angel of a women half way around the globe.

When I got home, and was wondered what I just bought (and if I just wasted money), I listened.

I am so blown away...... Maybe I live in a cave, but for me, this is the most beautiful music I have ever had the pleasure of being a human being on this earth that has the gift of hearing (ref: Moive: Children of a Lessor God). I have had music that has given me goose bumps before, and yes, this gave me plenty.... But I have never shed a tear before, not until now. To Steve McDonald, it is so nice to hear Angels sing. Steve McDonald, I have no idea if or how good your other work may be, but this one has captured me. It is just that simple......... BTW...I'm afraid to listen to any of you other work, for how could you top this?

The original 1978 Broadway cast recording of Stephen Schwartz's Working has long been awaited on CD, and this great-sounding 2001 release proves it was worth the wait. Surely one of the more unlikely sources for a musical was Studs Terkel's 1972 book that compiled interviews of American working people discussing their jobs and what they liked and disliked about them. Schwartz transformed these interviews into a series of songs written by himself, Craig Carnelia, Mary Rodgers and Susan Birkenhead, Micki Grant, and pop singer James Taylor, and accordingly the variety of songs is as great as the variety of the workers featured. There's the lyric beauty of "The Mason," the rueful "Just a Housewife," the retiree's wry "Joe," the waitress's lilting "It's an Art," Taylor's pop-country "Brother Trucker," and the powerful emotion of "Fathers and Sons," realized by a compelling cast that features David Patrick Kelly, Joe Mantegna, Bob Gunton, and Lynne Thigpen, among others.

Six bonus tracks include a new version of the grocery checker song written for the 1999 L.A. Theatreworks production, Carnelia and Grant performing their own songs (unfortunately, Grant's track comes from a poor-quality audio source), and Schwartz's moving performance of "Fathers and Sons" from 1999's The Stephen Schwartz Album. Also welcome are 2001 notes from Schwartz paired with 1978 notes from Terkel, and a detailed listing of the composers and performers of each song. This musical seems to be very underrated, because it isn't done in a traditional style. There is no set storyline or characters. It is essentially a grouping of songs about different people and the work they do in their lives. Some of the songs are very powerful, like "Millworker", and some are just fun, like "Lovin' Al". Some songs date the recording, as songs like "Brother Trucker", while good, have a bit of a synthesized 70's feel. The majority of the songs are more traditional.

I saw this show done by my high school years ago, so maybe it holds a bit of nostalgia for me, but it is definitely worth checking out.

I have never seen Working, but would love to, and I would love to perform it so as to revive interest in it. I found out about this recording from an online site, and I fell in love with it. It's a very modern style musical although from 1978. Were it on Broadway today, it would still be revelent to today's working class. My favorite number probably has to be "It's An Art", just because of its sheer fun. I could listen to that song all day and never get bored with it. I do, however, find "Brother Trucker" to be a bit tiring, and "Neat To Be A Newsboy" is just plain old, outdated, and ANNOYING! Other than that, wonderful ablum for an almost forgetten show.

I had the privilege of seeing a production of this wonderful musical at L.A. Valley College in May 2004. I quickly fell in love with the songs and the entire premise of the musical. Now, with this CD, I can finally sing along to all the brilliant songs over and over again, belting them out like there is no tomorrow.

What makes Working so special is that anyone can relate to the lyrics, they are powerful, beautiful, touching, and extremely real. Anyone who has ever worked a day in their life will feel the lyrics hit close to home. Whether you're a housewife, a valet parker, a fireman, a millworker, a teacher, a cleaning woman, or even a hooker, this musical has a place for you, no matter what job you do.The emotion, sincerity, and love expressed in the songs are amazing, and they are all extremely unique and a pure joy to listen to.

All the songs are fantastic but the stand-outs have to be "All the Live Long Day," "Just a Housewife," "If I Could've Been," "It's An Art," "Father's and Sons," "Cleaning Women," and "Something to Point to." I also have a soft spot for "Brother Trucker" and "I'm Just Movin" from the 1999 revival, which I am so grateful is included in this CD. This is a terrific, feel-great album everyone should listen to. Give Working a chance, it's worth it.

i admit that this is an obscure musical, but nevertheless i found myself in a production of WORKING as Grace, the millworker. upon listening to the cd, i found that each song characterized the character well. the newsboy song is NOT annoying and my favourite songs are "its an art", "cleaning women", "if i could've been" and "lovin al". I would only recommend this CD for a real musical theatre afficionado, as those who don't appreciate the beauty of a musical won't understand these songs.

I had never heard of this show until I stage managed a musical revue that included "If I Could've Been." That song grew on me, and I finally had to check out the rest of the soundtrack. All of the music on this CD is fantastic, and the lyrics feel sincere, creating beautiful moments for each character. Stephen Schwartz's best decision with this show was collaborating, allowing different composers to bring their own talents and specialties to the music, thus making it more real and less "Broadway." My only criticism is that the liner notes are slim.

The "Essential" Purcell? Well, you could get a bunch of critics to argue about that for a few days, but in the meantime, here is a sampler of highlights from the King's Consort's three admirable Purcell series: the Complete Odes and Welcome Songs, Complete Anthems and Services, and Complete Secular Solo Songs. There are, of course, some of Purcell's most-performed pieces (which probably are "essential"): Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, "Sound the trumpet" from Come, ye sons of Art, Rejoice in the Lord alway (the "Bell Anthem," named for the string figure at the opening that sounds like pealing bells), the gently patriotic "Fairest isle, all isles excelling" (sung by a miscast James Bowman), and a selection from the funeral music for Queen Mary. There are also some delightful surprises--particularly among the little-known secular songs and church music. The plaintive "O fair Cedaria" gets a lovely performance by Barbara Bonney (a singer not usually associated with Purcell); tenor Rogers Covey-Crump (possibly the ideal high tenor for Purcell) sings the enchanting "If music be the food of love"; the church anthems "Let mine eyes run down with tears" and "Remember not, O Lord, our offences" have some startling harmonies as daring as any Monteverdi ever wrote. If you're unfamiliar with Purcell, this reasonably priced disc is a good place to start exploring without a big initial investment. --Matthew Westphal

Like in his renditions of Handel's oratorios, Robert King manages to bring a freshness and strenght to Purcell's music that I had seldom heard before. This CD also features some of the best performers of early music in the world. My favourite tracks are Oh, Fair Cedaria, sung by the multi-talented Barbara Bonney; Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher; She Loves and she Confesses too, sung by the wonderful Susan Gritton; and Welcome, Welcome Glorious Morn, sung by Rogers Covey-Crump. The only track I didn't find absolutely wonderful is Fairest Isle, sung here by James Bowman. Don't get me wrong, I generally love Mr Bowman, I think that his performance in Mr Purcell's Most Admirable Composures (also conducted by Robert King) makes it another essential Purcell recording; but I find that Fairest Isle was much better done elsewhere, particularly by Christopher Hogwood and Barbara Bonney.

These songs aren't only beautiful, they're also poignant, sweet and unpretentious. I think that it will be very clear to anyone who listens to this recording that Mr Purcell was one of the finest composers that ever lived.

If anyone has benefitted from the reversion in the last three or so decades to period instruments and historical reconstruction, it is Henry Purcell. Before, he was merely great, the peerless word-setter in the English language, a virtuoso of boundless range, a professional composer whose offical commissions were always imbued with personality and invention. But period instrumentation has added to this a greater depth, an other-worldly texture of sound. With his intricate, multi-part vocal writing, his preference for low, rumbling instruments such as the bass viol and the strange and remarkable theorbo, as well as his often sombre and low-key subject matter and treatment, Purcell creates a round, glowing, humming sound as pregnantly full as dub reggae.

This has an extraordinary effect on the listener. Whereas Bach, with his mathematical abstractions, sounds universal and timeless, Purcell's music takes the listener back 300 years, back to different ways of thinking about, feeling about and addressing things we still think etc. about today - death, love, friendship. The emotion is timeless, but the music's beauty is alien, THEIRS, hence its preciousness.

A lot of intelligence has gone into the unity of this compilation, beginning with two Welcomes (to the dawn and to the listener, in this case a King), and ending with thoughts of evening, death and a Baroque 'Thank you for the music'. These are bright, fanfare-like works, but the predominant mood is slow, ruminative, quiet. The selection covers the wide range of Purcell's oeuvre, from opera and funeral marches to secular songs and odes, and includes his most famous vocal works - Dido's Lament from Dido and Aeneas, sung by Gillian Fisher, and never more evocative of pagan loss and death; the massive 'Bell Anthem', with its ingenious opening symphony and joyful antiphon; and a miraculously serene 'Evening Hymn', Dido's opposite, death indicating hope, the treble voice swirling over the heavy ground bass like the soul released from the inert body.

it might seem quixotic to choose highlights from an exemplary collection of highlights, but the entry of the strings washing over the serene repetition of 'Be Welcome then, great Sir' always makes my heart stop still, while the musical picture of 'Bold Honour', the 'noisy Nothing, stalking shade', blocking the poet's amorous intentions in 'She loves and confesses too', adds a chilling hint of life's transience to a bouyantly bawdy song.

With this album director and Purcell expert Robert King provides the listener with an excellent introduction to the composer's vocal works. The pieces presented here were taken from Mr. King's recordings of 'The Complete Odes and Welcome Songs', 'The Complete Anthems and Services', 'The Complete Secular Solo Songs' and diverse anthology discs. King, his wonderful soloists and musicians do the brilliance of Purcell's music fully justice. Whether he was commissioned by royalty, the church or theatre, Purcell shone in all areas. This disc certainly demonstrates the variety and originality of his craft, not to speak of his uncanny ability of setting words to music.

An outstanding Purcell offering. With a beautiful perfomance by Barbara Bonney of 'Oh, fair Cedaria'. Susan Gritton is equally captivating in 'She loves and she confesses too'. Gillian Fisher's rendition of the famous 'Dido's Lament' is haunting and poignant. Further an intelligent and brilliant 'Hosanna to the highest' by Michael George. James Bowman and Michael Chance sparkle in the countertenor duet 'Sound the trumpet' (from 'Come Ye sons of Art away'). And I should not forget to mention the joyous, luminous performance of the beautiful 'Bell Anthem'. To name but a few favourites, only James Bowman's 'Fairest Isle' was a disappointment.

Those who are familiar with Purcell's music will get an excellent disc with some of his most beloved works. If you are new to Purcell, this is, as already said a great introduction. Which might be the incentive to further explorations of Purcell.

Though this doesn't cover the entire Sons' career, it captures them in the full-flower of their post-Roy Rogers line-up, after founding member had returned to the group. At the time the Sons' were a 5-piece with the vocal trio of Spencer, Bob Nolan and Lloyd Perryman backed by Pat Brady on bass, Hugh Farr on fiddle and Karl Farr on guitar. All three of the instrumentalists also added vocals.

The group was well-served by the compositions of Nolan, including numerous Western standards like "Cool Water." In addition to their trademark harmonies and yodeling, the band also cut the occasional instrumental, such as the hard-swinging "Cajon Stomp" and the hot fiddle tune "The Texas Crapshooter." Forty-two finely-remastered tunes on two discs may be an oversized helping for a few, but for fans of Western song, this is an outstanding value. Those wishing a broader overview (with less detail on this particular Sons' line-up) might look at Hip-O's single-disc "Ultimate Collection," which includes earlier highpoints like "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" and "Bluebonnet Girl."

I have a lot of cassettes by the Pioneeers, some dating back to when Leonard Slye wasn't Roy Rogers yet; they are all special to me. I've read the other reviewers' comments and I agree wholeheartedly with the positive comments about this CD. I'm especially happy about one song in particular, "He's Gone, He's Gone Up the Trail", originally done by Pat Brady and Gabby Hayes (yes,Gabby Hayes) in a Roy Rogers movie. This is a real collector's item.

This music has made a really deep impression on me; it's pure, simple, honest and...historic---it preserves a sound, a vocal and instrumental style and a world view which I'm afraid is just about dead in 2004. A real pity. In fact, it's tragic.

So get this set and experience it! It's vintage PIONEERS, at the height of their fabulous art. The bare essentials---vocal trio, bass, 2 guitars and the astounding fiddling of Hugh Farr (who famous conductor Leopold Stokowski called one of the 2 greatest living violinists during the 1940's!)

Bob Nolan's "Song of the Bandit" is like a mythical American folkloric ballad--that third verse, when the bandit comes to the girl in her dream, complete with angels and a winged horse gliding down the moonbeams---whoa!! And yet, the tune is upbeat and energetic--not at all what you would expect from the lyrics.

"So Long to the Red River Valley" is another beauty---the haunting yodeling in the final verse, with Hugh's fiddle gently wailing away---it's true ART!

"Trail Herdin' Cowboy" is another rare gem---with more amazing fiddlin' from Mr. Farr, paricularly at the very end, when the voices go into what sounds like an extended "Amen" cadence.

"Whispherin' Wind" resembles a 19th-Century "parlor" Waltz tune--rather simplistic--yet the Pioneers arrangement and performance transform it into something remarkably elegant and touching.

This performance of Bob Nolan's masterpiece "Cool Water" is MUCH better than the later ones I've heard; the RCA version included on the "Cigareets & Whusky" cd is rushed and almost sounds like they were bored with it; this version, even though it ends a bit abruptly, really captures that mythical quality which we associate with the Old West, as man interacts with nature.

AND FINALLY----"Ridin' Home"---for me, the ultimate in the Pioneer's art---profoundly beautiful, the absolute essence of the romantic spirit of the Old West (unfortunately THIS TRACK is marred by some pretty harsh crackling from the old acetate master recording---but GOD, it's still so lovely!)

Wonderful music, beatifully preserved and re-mastered.

Incidentally, I am a "classical" (symphonic) conductor by profession, but this 2-cd set has given me some of the most satisfying musical enjoyment of the past 10 years.

This 42 song Varese Vintage Series album represents a range of The Sons of the Pioneers musical styles. Guitars are strummed as fiddles add quality of a wistful echo of sentiment, of the B-Westerns we enjoyed as little cowboys and gals. Saddle up for "The Essential Collection:The Sons of the Pioneers", as we sit round the campfire listening to lesser known works that render the ultimate of "pure Americana". Enjoy the cue "BLUE PRAIRIE", melody is deeply woven into the American landscape, blends of warmth and simplicity add a welcomed appreciation for the early days of The Western.

First rate singers, the Pioneers are also wonderful instrumentalist with this line performing ~ Bob Nolan (string bass/guitar/baritone vocals), Tim Spencer (tenor vocals), Lloyd Perryman (tenor vocals/guitar), Pat Brady (stand-up bass/vocals/comedy), Hugh Farr (fiddle/bass vocals) and Karl Farr (guitar/tenor vocals) singing and yodeling, became quickly the very definition of Western Cowboy Music. Moving tunes inclusive "WEST IS IN MY SOUL", "TRAIL HERDIN' COWBOY", "HE'S GONE, HE'S GONE UP THE TRAIL", "OPEN RANGE AHEAD", "DOWN ALONG THE SLEEPY RIO GRANDE" slow sad songs about a very difficult life in the west. Loneliness, old age and romance made a lifelong impression upon the wranglers. In closing this 2-CD-Set we enjoy "I'LL TAKE YOU HOME AGAIN KATHLEEN", traditional tune that director John Ford used in many John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara films ~ this lyrical and melodic song still tugs at your heartstrings. If you want a collection of the Pioneers, this album would be the essential choice.

These CDs don't meet the standards I would have expected from Elmer Bernstein's wonderful film music.
*Boring*
It just didn't have the energy one would expect from "The Magnificent Seven" and "The Man with the Golden Arm". I think the City of Prague and National Youth Jazz Orchestras were bargain orchestras used to make an inexpensive CD set of one of my favorite film composers. The conducting and arrangements were what made this an obviously bad album.

it's unfortunate that more tracks weren't able to be recorded as theree was a good 15-20 minutes of space remaining on both discs. Regardless, this is an excellent sampler, especially in conjunction with Varese's Bernstein sampler including rare stuff like the Black Cualdron.


With regards to this silva set, these recordings range back to 1994, with Sons of Katie Elder and True Grit being recorded for a John Wayne CD and Bridge At Remagen for a CD of classic War themes. The Great Escape was also recorded for that CD, but producer James Fitzpatrick opted to record a new arrangement (same with Magnificent Seven). In '97, The Buccaneer for included on a Swashbucklers disc, while Heavy Metal was on the popular 'Space and Beyond' compilation. In '98, the world premiere recording of Airplane first appeared on a DISASTERS film disc. So while it may technically be the world premiere RECORDING it certainly is not the world premiere CD RELEASE of that recording. Ghostbusters was included on Space 3: Beyond the Final Frontier, the second followup to the popular 'Space and Beyond'. Fast forward to 2002 and 4 recordings first appeared on WAY OUT WEST: ESSENTIAL WESTERN FILM MUSIC COLLECTION VOLUME TWO, those being The Comancheros, The Hallelujah Trail, The Scalphunters and The Shootist. Man With the Golden Arm and Walk on the Wild are from Silva's JAZZ IN FILM cd.


The remaining tracks were all newly recorded for this release. They are of course the strongest tracks, seeing as the City of Prague Philharmonic has improved over time. I do wonder though why they did not include the older arrangements of Great Escape and Mag. Seven as bonus tracks.

I also recommend the simultaneously released '40 years of Film Music: Jerry Goldsmith' for another great set honoring a late great film composer.

great westerns to the Theme from Airplane to music he did for television,
Bernstein was one of the greatest.

It's great! It brings back memories of my dad. He loved John Wayne and the old cowboys of the Magnificent Seven. But it's nice just to listen and relax (it's not all cowboy music).

I love the Sons of the Pioneers. This is a great price. I bought the cd for about 3 times as much at the Roy Rogers Museum. There is no sound like the harmonies of this group. It also captures the musical style of the era.

One of the benefits of CD is that the background pops and hiss of vinal can be eliminated. However, nobody bothered to do that before releasing this CD. On some cuts the background hiss is so bad it is difficult to hear the music.

The music is great, the sound quality is awful. Spend your money elsewhere.

If you're looking for basic down to earth versions of the Pioneers most popular songs this CD is for you. A delightful simplicity in the playing here breathes fresh life into songs we might have heard too many times. 'I'm An Old Cowhand' with Roy on lead vocal and fine fiddling by Hugh Farr, interestingly enough, has a 'One More Ride' style yodel harmony at the end, and is that Lloyd Perryman or Pat Brady slappin' that bass? Great Stuff! For a Pioneer nut like myself the spartan 'Tumbling Tumbleweeds' on this CD is worth the price of admission, and the haunting eerie mood of 'Blue Prairie' couldn't be improved upon. 'A Melody From The Sky' and 'Blue Bonnet Girl' are both tender and masterful, while the plaintive 'Empty Saddles' never sounded better. 'Over The Santa Fe Trail' is the anomaly here, it almost sounds like an experiment in weirdness, but the strange phrasing and off-key sound make it something of a conversation piece, I'm wondering if the recording might be off-speed. I think 'Cool Water' is one of the best songs ever written, maybe the definitive example of Bob Nolan's poetic genius, and this take is very nice, although I think I slightly prefer the version on 'The RCA Victor Years Vol. 1' (RCA CD (9744-2). According to an old friend of Bob Nolan's, 'Cool Water' was written by Bob back in the '30s, while he and his mule 'Dan' were walking the Mojave Desert on a trek from his cabin here in Big Bear. That story gives a wonderful vignette of Bob talking to his mule ("Keep'a movin' Dan, don't you listen to him Dan, he's a devil not a man, and he spreads the burnin' sand with water. Dan can you see that big green tree, where the water's runnin' free, and it's waitin' there for me and you."), as they trudged toward the cool wet shade of the Mojave Narrows almost 70 years ago. Because MCA chose not to include any notes with this release, the oddness of 'Santa Fe Trail', and somewhat uneven sound quality, I considered giving it a 4-star rating, but after many listenings, the overall content, and the sweet rarity of these selected versions begged 5 stars. A very nice collection!
