The beauty of Steve Reich's minimalist compositions can be found not in their repetition but in their evolution. Listening to the Kronos Quartet perform Different Trains, the listener quickly gets over the camp value of the conductor samples to discover an unfolding theme that harks back not only to bustling industrialism but also to the horror of the Nazi concentration-camp trains. Reich is a master of such subtle changes in sonics, and his impeccable timing turns simple phrases into musical tapestries. On Reich Remixed, some of dance music's more innovative artists pay homage to the composer in the way they know best: by sampling his works and remixing them into their own. Coldcut's take on Music for 18 Musicians adds a fast-paced techno flair to the classic composition, Howie B's Eight Lines respectfully keeps the integrity of the original piece, and Tranquility Bass peppers "Megamix" with voices and (eventually) beats. There are some misses here, and, most unfortunate, DJ Spooky's schizophrenic treatment of City Life lobotomizes a previously fine composition. No, you still can't dance to Reich, but you can see how others use him for source material. But after hearing these condensed and diced versions, you might find it's worth delving back into Reich's originals to hear what the fuss is all about. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Boring and unimaginative.......2005-07-13
My opinion is that this compilation doesn't glorify Reich or electronica. I used to think that most techno enthusiasts and maybe even techno composers had probably never heard of him. While I've come to learn that this isn't true, I think this CD would be a good argument in favor of it. I certainly didn't expect Reich Remixed to compare with the originals. And there is certainly nothing wrong with a tribute. But everything here is against Reich's style, both too fast and too simple.
The Coldcut remix of Steve Reich's 18, unfortunately the best track on the disk, is laughable in comparison and a warning against the tracks that follow. After reading the reviews for the original Music for 18 Musicians, there are several people who can say nothing except that it is slow and boring. I think you might as well include Coldplay in that number. It is as if he recorded himself skipping forward through the first 5 or so minutes of the original and smiled at his creation.
He isn't the only one who obviously missed the point. Most of the remixes use some of the cheapest sounding instruments and methods I've heard; these aren't just bad tributes to Reich, they are bad tributes to techno! And don't expect to hear phasing, which was introduced for the first time in Come Out and Drumming, in their remixes. That would require at least some trivial knowledge of Reich's contribution to minimalism, which these artists obviously do not have. And anyway, Reich used much more than rhythmic, vocal/musical repetition and staccato notes, let's get that straight.
I wasted my money on this one. If you haven't been introduced to Reich, I envy you! Try Music for 18 Musicians and Different Trains, many agree that those are among Reich's most powerful pieces.
Children of Reich Create Loving Homage.......2005-04-16
The entrancing hobby of looping gave birth to essencially all forms of techno in existence today, and all followers should be thankful Steve Reich's cassette tapes messed up one day to create a looping effect. He soon became obsessed with overlapping sounds and varying tempos, a basic foundation for modern day electronic music. Such is the reason why a wide variety of artists came together to create a tribute album to this obscure classical composer, and the end result is a diamond in the rough.
If "Reich Remixed" has any style permeating through the whole album, it is the esoteric sounds of trance. Each track brings in a sentimental mourning, but also sings out hosannas of joy, hailing the appreciation of the father of techno. Tranquility Bass's "Megamix", succeeding fully in painting a mural of Reich's repertoire, Coldcut's loving recreation of "Music for 18 Musicians", and Howie B's "Eight Lines" tribute will draw you in with their joyful melodies. Yet darkness lies ahead as well. Andrea Parker brings in a creepy Trip-Hop version of "The Four Sections", perfect for committing a bank robbery if you get off on that. The bonus track from freQ Nasty & B.L.I.M. has the rough sound of Drum n' Bass without corrupting the original message, although it sounds a bit out of place on this album. The masterpiece is Nobukazu Takemura's "Proverb", which stacks the voices in one loop, which will make one double check the CD for scratches. It not only holds true to what Reich was attempting, but re-interprets.
To those who were already die-hard Reich fans, a word of caution. This CD will sound repititive, perhaps even like cheap rip-offs of the original tracks, as they cannot possibly recreate the massive pieces Reich composed in six or seven minutes of CD time. As well, there are slip-ups. "City Life" is butchered to pieces and essentially impossible to enjoy, and "Come Out" only highlights the limitations of techno's possibilities to create as compared to pen, paper, and a symphony orchestra.
The album explores techno's creative possibilities to new levels, and is an aural treat. Consider it Reich's first DJing experience, changing the world of music in the same way his originals shook the ear drums.
Highs: Techno symphony, with the same variety as an orchestra, skillfully mixed, loving and appropriate recreations of Reich's original masterpieces.
Lows: Reich's originals are better, sometimes butchered here, same repitive downfall of techno at times.
The Score: A-, Reich not Lost in Techno Translation.
Decent, but disappointing overall........2002-01-05
There are a few really good tracks on this CD. My personal favorites are Music for 18 Musicians, Four Sections, the Megamix, and Piano Phase. The Desert Music remix (the bonus track) is okay, not great, but okay. And then there's the bottom end of the spectrum, which is everything else. Unfortunately, what I like is overpowered by what I dislike.
Great music for an electronic fan.......2001-10-04
I enjoyed every one of these pieces on their own. I am familiar with most of the electronic artists and each one of these songs is beautiful. I had never heard Steve Reich's music before this. I enjoyed his music but, I didn't think that the remixes were completely true to his form. Reich's music has some good ideas that the remixer's somewhat expanded upon. I think the idea was to take some of Reich's ideas and put it in to a more modern style. If they wanted someone to rehash his ideas, then it would have been boring. I enjoy these artists, but there are artists out there that are using some of his ideas already, namely Plastikman and Tortoise. Overall the songs are great in any sense.
Proxy for a Reich's Greatest Hits CD?.......2001-06-16
Of all modern classical composers, Steve Reich is the one whose music is most likely to attract the rock-oriented ear. 'Music for 18 Musicians' was a ground-breaking album which closed out the 1970s, and it took much of the audience that had been nurtured on Tangerine Dream's 'Ricochet' and, before that, Mike Oldfield's 'Tubular Bells'. It was only to be expected that other artists would start sampling Reich's works.
I can't get enough of 'Music for 18 Musicians' -- I bought it on LP in 1979, and two versions on CD. It is my No. 1 self-hypnosis album. So I was intrigued to discover how it would be re-worked for this album. I was disappointed, frankly. The Coldcut Remix provides no evidence that the DJ has listened beyond the first five minutes of the original.
But there's no heresy in modifying Reich's music. I welcome every effort to do so. I knew about half of the pieces selected here, so, for me, it's partly a Reich sampler. The great thing about the album is that not only did it get me buying more of Reich's output, but it also got me listening more to the originals.
For me, the stand-out track here is 'Piano Phase', which applies prog-rock values to a piece I didn't know at all well. It could so easily be Rick Wakeman or Keith Emerson playing the synth lines over the piano loop!
The opening track has grown on me over the years. At first listen, the Megamix seemed to have too many different samples crowded in; it seemed too ambitious in searching for common musical themes between no fewer than nine of Reich's albums. But now it flows nicely.
The closing track, supposedly based on the Desert Music, is a straightforward techno track, almost Prodigy-like, whose relationship to Reich's music seems entirely tangential.
I believe every Reich fan should hear this album, even though a few will find perhaps nothing to like. And I'd recommend anyone who buys this album without knowing Reich to listen also to 'Different Trains', 'Electric Counterpoint', and of course, 'Music for 18 Musicians'.
Until Nonesuch releases in the US the greatest hits CD compiled in Japan, we will have to rely on this as the only single-CD tour through Reich's works, however oblique and re-shaped these may be.

Thats where the happy people Go!.......2006-07-09
THE TRAMMPS actually have several Best Of collections, as well as the "original" albums with many of the original hits available on CDs around the music market. LOVE EPIDEMIC extended mix on original cover CD.
Some are edits.......2006-03-10
While the selections are timeless classics, be warned. 3 of 4 songs I ordered it for, "Love Has Come Around", "Harmony" and "Fantasy", are single edits. At least the Trammps cut is the long version.
SOME GREAT MEMORIES!.......2001-03-23
This is a great collection of very hard to find classics. It brought back some "disco dancefloor" moments from the past. Especially noteworthy are "Victim" by Candi Staton, "The Night The Lights Went Out" by Trammps, and "Harmony" by Suzi Lane. Most of these songs are extended mixes and very hard to find, especially on CD. So where is Volume 2? A suggestion for the next volume is the full album mix of "That's Where The Happy People Go" by Trammps. If anyone knows where I can find that on CD, please let me know.
Great Dance Classics!.......2000-06-28
What a great album. I bought this for the Womack cut (the best song on the album) but soon got into its other songs: the song about the NY blackout in the 70s, "The Night the Lights Went Out," the tropical-sounding "The Real Thing" and the superb "Love Has Come Around." If you love 70s dance hits and are looking for obscure but good stuff you can't go wrong here. Many of these songs are very hard-to-find otherwise.

Mostly Slow Techno.......2002-06-05
Maximum Electronica starts out with three terrific songs: the beautifully melancholic "Hyper-Ballad" by Bjork; "Out of Space" by The Prodigy--a fluctuation between spastic beats and Jamaiican/raggae voice samples; and, of course, the surreal, hip "Metronomic Underground (Wagon Christ Mix)" by Stereolab. After track #3, the remaining songs follow the same slow beat and are, at times, unrecognizable from the next. The one exception is Moby's "Feeling So Real", which far surpasses The Prodigy's song speed-wise with full-throttle energy. These two songs save this CD from becoming one of my sleep/white noise CDs.
So, if you like slow-pulsing, leisurely techno, then you'll probably enjoy this CD; otherwise, you might want to look elsewhere for speed.

Its all about house.......2003-07-11
This is by far the best house set that I own. I listen to it on a regular basis and I still am surprised at some of the tracks.
Track 7 and 8-----damn. The Janet Jackson joint is magnificent. A wonderful blending of house beats and the hottest flute I have ever heard. Just buy this if you dont have it already. If you are a true house fan, though, you should have this in your collection as I write this review.
Im waitin for volume two..........
Ladies and Gentlemen, the Party Has Officially Begun!.......2002-08-18
Is "Maximum House and Garage" as good as the below reviewers say it is? You bet. It's a nonstop party of tight, well-mixed grooves of house music featuring thumping beats, infectious basslines, and some vocals for well over 2 hours. If there's any CD that cements Roger's standing as one of the leading names in house, this is it. Disc One gets the mood right with the uplifting anthem "Can't Get Enough" by Soul Searchers; Twilight delivers a house interpretation of the Chic classic "I Want Your Love," and then there's my favorite track on the disc, "Everybody Dance" by diva Barbara Tucker. Tucker's jam isn't a cover of the Chic song of the same name, but rather, it's a near-flawless disco stomper equipped with a bassline that will have you hooked. On Disc Two, the better of these discs, we get "My Beat" by Blaze; an impressive Masters at Work dub mix of "Go Deep" by Janet Jackson; Roger's own remix of "High Times" by Jamiroquai, and "House Music" by Eddie Amador. There's not one loser on this disc, which is guaranteed to get any party started. While the price on this baby is steep, it's still a worthy investment for any dance music lover. Quite simply, house music rarely gets any better than this.
The moment you've all been waiting for!.......2001-06-08
After 40+ reviews I'm sure you folks have been wondering who the artist is that does it for the HousERaT. Well I'm happy to say that my favorite house dj is the one and only S-Man (Roger Sanchez). I've waited this long to start reviewing his work because I wanted people to know there are other house artists out there that know how to get the job done. However none do it quite like Roger Sanchez. I've got many of his cds and I'm going to review as many as offered.
This cd is the single best double cd set I've ever purchased. Everything I like in house music is here, thumpin' beats, deep basslines, foot stomping tempo, excellent mixing and a wide variety of house styles blended seemlessly together in perfect house harmony. In this two cd set you'll find several styles including house, garage, disco, and tribal. There is literally no weakness in this double set totalling more than 155 minutes of house music done right.
My cuts of choice on cd 1 (Peak Hour) is "The Real Tribute", "A Day In Copacabana", "Kings of Spain", and "Buffalo Gals Stampede." Cd 1 is over 78 minutes long and features mainly house and disco. It comes together nicely and starts the party strong. If I rated cd 1 on it's own it would've gotten five stars but sense it's coupled with a second cd it get's 4.75 stars (since I liked the second set better).
My cuts of choice on cd 2 (After Hours) are cuts 1-7 and 8-17. For those non-mathmaticians out there, that means the entire second cd. I like the second cd so much it would be next to impossible to pick favorites. From the numbers above you can see the set is broken into two parts and Roger just lets loose with everything from disco to tribal. This set clocks in at over 78 minutes and without question cd 2 gets 5 stars. On it's own cd 2 would be considered one of my favorite house sets. The only Roger Sanchez set I like more, to date, is the free cd that came in the Mixmag June 2000 Issue, featuring a "Global House" mix. You'll have to spend a few pennies to get this set here but it's well worth it.
Let it be known people, if you can get your hands on any of the Roger Sanchez house sets, you'll be doing your house collection a really big favor. Every one that I have thus far is 5 star material. If you haven't done house music in the past, start you collection with the S-Man.
Deep House for true dancers!!.......1999-03-07
DJ Roger Sanchez is like that evil character in all horror movies. He doesn't die, he just multiplies!! Just when you thought he was outta the game, he comes back! What's it all about? Two CD's, 37 tracks and a selection of music divided into Peak Hour (disc one) and After Hours (disc two). Soul Searchers' CAN'T GET ENOUGH is the baited hook that reels you in. When you become untangled, LOVE CHANGES sucks you back in. "Changes . . . thats what love makes one do!" Missing that 4/4 foot stomping anthem? Its next, MAKE ME FEEL by Marcel Krieg. Thumpin'! If you are talking House and Garage, you KNOW my man Armand Van Helden's gonna reprezent! His Last Hustle in Paris Mix of WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE rules!! Once again another Drum 'N' Bass and House fusion.
Disc two really get workin' with Blaze's CAN YOU DANCE TO MY BEAT. When I first heard this song, I was like, "What!" It was so good, but nothing that I had ever heard before. I was instantly hooked, and I'm sure you will be too! Kings of Tomorrow I WANT YOU (For Myself) has got that "it" factor too! But a song everyone will be feeling, even those who are hooked on phonics, is Janet Jackson's GO DEEP (Spiritual Flute Mix). Louie Vega worked the hell outta this tune at the "Does Your Mama Know" party in LA and the crowd went wild!! Meera!! There's more! Senor Sanchez leans on EVERYTHING YOU NEED by NYC Live & Direct. Customer Reviews:
Drum and Bass for Dummies........2002-09-30
For the average consumer, picking the right drum-and-bass compilation is as risk-free as a game of Russian Roulette. Among the CDs that keep crowding record store bins, there are the quality sets and their shoddily-assembled imitators. But for those who want to introduce themselves to the genre should consider "Bass in Your Face," which features remixes of tracks from artists familiar to the average Joe Schmo. Nervous beats and a memorable bassline revamp Missy Elliott's "The Rain," while rubbery bass glides through Busta Rhymes' radically transformed "Dangerous." En Vogue get the drum-and-bass makeover on the Babyface-penned "Whatever," and the disc's best moment is Armand Van Helden's dynamic re-working of Aaliyah's "One in a Million." Those already familiar to the genre may stick with other releases for advanced students in the drum-and-bass school, but this disc is a worthy consideration for those looking for a good introduction that doesn't have that cheesy "Totally Dance" aftertaste.
This is definitely D & B.........2001-08-07
Actually Mickey Finn, Aphrodite, Dillinja, Natural Born Chillers, Lemon D, Dream Team (Bizzy B & Pugwash), Breakbeat Science, and 4 Hero are all Drum & Bass artists, so this easily and most definitely qualifies as a D & B CD. Some of the tracks are excellent, such as The Rain and Me or the Papas..
This is Bass, not Drum & Bass.......2000-03-01
This is a great CD filled with Bass for your subwoofers in your car, but it is not Drum & Bass. It has lots of really great remixes which I love. Lots of drop beats, and low lows for chest shaking sounds... but no Jungle style Drum & Bass. Buy this one for your car if you've got subs in the trunk!
A Cool CD especially those with varied taste.......2000-01-12
I am a huge drum & bass fan. And most everything else for that matter. I think the cd is awesome, and is a superb blend of 2 cool genres. For those who think that rap and techno can not blend should hear stuff by propperheads, archive, and roni size just so they can know how wrong they are. Dilinja's remix of me or the papes is incredible
saving grace.......1999-06-09
all right, i'll agree with DMBassfan305 as to the fact that the two genres of bass and hip hop are different from each other in a very definite way, but jeru the damaja's "me or the papes" (dillinja remix) is an incredible song in a strange sense, and so redeems the album somewhat. as a drum n bass fan, though, i have to say that the mix presented here should be kept seperate. this is one of those "could be better, could be worse" kinda things.
