5 out of 5 stars Excellent album worth owning for all electronic and dance music fans........2006-01-13

Tripomatic Fairy Tales is by far one of the best electronica and dance album releases EVER!

Back in 1992 there was this little known trance track that I heard of called Stella. From the very first time I heard of it I was hooked. It was fast and energetic, sort of a minimal track that just caught you off guard and took you along for the ride into euhporic extacy. I was so into this track I had to learn more about Jam & Spoon. I was totally hooked and researched anything and everything this duo who had produced many euro dance bands but Stella was nothing like Dr. Alban or B.G. The Prince Of Rap. It was tons better.

I waited until 1994 when Tripomatic Fairy Tales was finally released by SONY. Then I found what a great album it was. I kept listening and listening to tracks like Find Me (Odyssey To Anyoona) (Radio Mix), Odyssey To Anyoona, Right In The Night (Fall In Love With Music), Path Of Harmony and of course that excellent track STELLA.

Now that I am listening to this wonderfully excellent album of pure dance pleasure I am reminded that albums like Tripomatic Fairy Tales are few and far between.

If you haven't the pleasure of listening to this amazing album then by all means run to your local used music store and snatch it up before you wont be able to anymore. On another sad note I learned yesterday that DJ Spoon had died. Through his excellent album he will always be remembered.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD, a must to have!!! .......2005-11-21

I am visiting Las Vegas, and today, was shocking experience, at the Wynn Hotel, when i was playing roulette, i couldn't believe, they have in the general audio, the song FIND ME of Jam&Spoon!!! All my friends where shock when i told them, it is a song from more than 10 years ago!!!
If you are a real fan of electronic music, you must have this CD. The songs Find Me, and Right in the Night, really worth the price of this.
Also, take a look at the single Be Angeled, the Paul Van Dyk mix is absolutely great!

5 out of 5 stars Tripomatic Love.......2005-08-02

I was in the music store going through the cheap $1.00 CD's when I saw Jam & Spoon amongst a cabinet full of rubbish. Considering I have 1000's of CD's in the dance/trance/techno department and the fact that I am a DJ and have loved dance music for 15 years, I knew exactly who Jam & Spoon were when I saw the CD. However, considering they have multiple albums, many different aliuses (e.g. Storm, Dance 2 Trance, and Tokyo Ghetto Pussy) and I haven't listened to any of their music in several months, I was thrown off by the title of the CD. I assumed it was a newer release with the '2001' being in the title. When I looked at the tracks very briefly, I saw "Stella" and immeadietly jumped to the conclusion that it was the new millenium remixes and not the original version.

So I bought the CD, popped it in, expecting to hear their newer, slower sounds (post 1998), but what I heard was some of the best trance music ever. I kept asking myself, "Why is this so freaking awesome?" Then I got home and looked up this CD on Amazon and started seeing reviews about how this album is like a pioneer of trance music. I quickly grabbed the CD and looked closely at it and realized it was made in 1993, not 2001!!! I was dumbfounded, yet, to my surprise, I was so happy that I had picked up this CD. I cannot stress how powerful this album is.. it sounded like some of the newer progressive house music from 2004 and 2005 (e.g. Tilt and Way Out West) and it's still not dated, 12 years later. On top of that, the CD offers some very powerful deep, hard trance that I have been looking for ever since I really got into J&S's other project, Dance 2 Trance but was unable to find anything comparable.

This CD gets 5 stars plus 5 more because it's not only living proof that J&S are responsible for the incline of trance music, but it's also a CD that can be loved from the opening of "Heart Of Africa" until the final seconds of "Stellas Cry". However, it's "Find Me (Odyssey To Anyoona)" and "Tow Spys In The House Of Love" (tracks 2+3) that sets this CD off for me, in the way that they are intertwined together so perfectly. It's hard to understand why Jam & Spoon drop the hard trance style heard on this album and navigate into the Eurodance sound in later albums. All in all, this is one fine creation!

5 out of 5 stars A Benchmark.......2004-03-21

There are 2 significant releases from the '90's that reshaped the future "face" of club/dance music: "Tripomatic Fairytales 2001" from Jam & Spoon and "Accelerator" by Future Sound of London. Both undeniably brilliant in how they pioneered what was to become "trance," "progressive trance," "art-house trance," et al. "Tripomatic" is an all-inclusive work of art that only trained seekers of electronica will seek and enjoy. This is the Mona Lisa of what was to come. Experience this.

4 out of 5 stars Wave after Wave of inspired compositions.......2004-01-07

One of the most interesting features of Jam and Spoon's pioneering trance album is that the two singles "Right in the Night" and "Find Me (radio mix)" are both characterised by prominent vocals. Although both of these songs are very good in their own right, the more one listens to the album in its entirety, the more one realises they fit in less and less.

The brilliance of this album comes from its instrumental qualities. Although these qualities were always present in the singles (and who can forget the vivid introduction to "Right in the Night") they are present in unadulterated form in the album tracks. From the beginning, through "Heart of Africa", "Find Me" and "Stella (original version)", the tone is unmistakeably set. Vocals are properly relegated to a supporting role in all of these - as is pure and beautiful.

Writing in early 2004, eleven years after the inception of Tripomatic Fairlytales, it is remarkable how little it has dated. Although one can recognise from the early 1990s some of the bass-driven sequences which could be labelled as 'deep house', yet it portends far further forward in time than it reaches back.

A final remark should be made. Most of the tracks are at least 6 minutes long. The result is unhurried bliss.

5 out of 5 stars Top Notch Ambient Background Sounds.......2005-09-22

If your already a fan of this group, then, you shouldn't be caught without his cd. Its just as good as "Go Hawaii" and "Whole Numbers Play The Basics" There are so many tracks on this album that you're bound to hear something new every time you play it. For those who haven't heard the music of Casino Versus Japan, Its mainly dreamy, ambient style music. They're aren't any human vocals which is a plus for me. The music sort of incorporates rough, industrial sound and adds in a couple dreamy, catchy beats (Its hard to describe its sound) It's definitely worth getting since its a rare import and the marketplace prices are relatively cheap right now so get it before someone else does.

4 out of 5 stars First-rate leftovers.......2004-03-13

Hard to believe that this double-CD set is made up of recordings that never made it onto other releases. It's pretty difficult to find an ambient album that's pure goodness from start to finish. Woob, FSOL's Lifeforms, some of the em:t samplers, some Eno, Boards of Canada's Geogaddi.... Uhmmm, I think that's about it.

Hitori + Kaiso makes the grade, though. A mix of super-ambient and heavier tracks with a haunting sound and sparse melodies, this is almost too good to be true for ambient fans. Not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Renaissance Ibiza - 2001 Collection.......2001-07-31

To quote an exerpt from "Drop Some Drums" off the first of three vastly varying discs:

"You should feel pretty good by now. But, that isn't good enough. I don't want you to just feel 'pretty good'. I want you to feel GREAT!"

And if you aren't feeling great by the end of Disc One's tribal house set, then Disc Two's trance set will have you all wound up and ready to give some loving to the perfect end that Disc Three's ambient trip-hop set wraps up with.

Being a fan of the electronic genre, Renaissance Ibiza, the 2001 Collection really appeals to the vast taste in current clubbing music. Each set is extremely well done and everything here is fresh and ready to get you going. With three discs, each with a different flavor of electronic, you've got the perfect travelling, working or background CD... but who'd use it for background music?? This CD inspires some servere body moving and even now I find it difficult to concentrate with such amazing rythyms beating from my speakers.

For the price, this is an amazing bargin! I originally heard the entire three sets on MP3 and after scouring the retail world and DJ stores locally, I turned to [the internet] where I found it for [price]. What a steal for three discs packed with songs I never have to skip!

If you have a vast taste in electronic music, including a love for tribal house, trance and ambient/trip-hop, you owe it to yourself to pick up this CD at this cost. However, if you find you really only love one type of electronic music (i.e. Psy, Trance, DnB, etc...), you might want to skip over it because you'll find yourself only spinning one or two discs.

1 out of 5 stars Why meddle with good things?.......2005-12-24

Alan O'Day is probably best known for the original version of his 1977 #1 hit "Undercover Angel," which was quirky yet infectiously simple pop. He also wrote songs for a variety of artists (Helen Reddy, Three Dog Night, and others). He obviously didn't exhaust his songwriting skills, as I guess he still currently writes and I was quite surprised to learn he wrote for "Muppet Babies" (admittedly, I can't remember any of the songs from the show, only the theme, which I'm not sure if he had a hand in writing) and some other shows later on in the '90s, including some Disney stuff.

I read somewhere that he was inspired to re-make his old hit due to the inclusion of the original in the Charlie's Angels soundtrack. Well, less re-make than butcher and bastardize. We get pseudo-rapping coupled with hilariously stupid pro-social "love one another" lyrics, and somewhere in all this garbage, the chorus of the new version is vaguely familiar. Really, the only worthwhile factor in the song are the lyrics about giving Eminem an enema.

The main problem is that the title track lacks all sincerity. I realize O'Day meant this as an unserious rap parody, but it's not really rap other than the vocals (O'Day, ever the try-hard, throws in some "Whazzups!" before the chorus...) It's very '80s sounding and synth-driven poor man's R & B, sounding like someone trying to badly emulate New Edition or a minor '80s Motown artist. True parody artists like Weird Al at least study their material, and even if it ends up being silly, stupid, or behind the times, it still has effort behind it. This seems empty and vapid, but it's pre-meditated enough where I can't just dismiss it as clowning around in the studio. As for the lyrics, they end up being insipid in their delivery even if the underlying message is decent. The average Raffi song is much deeper, and is at least being played by a guy not trying to insult my intelligence.

The rest of the songs aren't as bad, but unfortunately by putting the worst first, a bad light is cast on already average songs. "WWW Dot Lonely" is another sad attempt to stay current lyrically. "Creative Me" and "Allergies" are better attempts at quirk and humor, but they're nothing special. "Raining More Than Rain" uses the same sort of reggae/R&B vibe that fails on the title track more successfully, but there are compatability issues. The song would probably be a good dance number if not for the easygoing vocals (everything else aside, O'Day does nice vocals). It sounds like it was recorded with mostly programmed instrumentation and synths (I can't tell about the backing vocals), which lend it an inorganic feel. Considering the simplicity of the music, this is not a good thing.

It's tragic that in trying to be humorous and current, O'Day effectively had to destroy his best past work. Ditch the title track, and the others would make a passable demo CD-R, or perhaps bonus tracks on an upcoming album (if there's any such release, I'd have to sample it thoroughly before even considering buying it).

Older songwriters needn't hang up the hat (Paul Williams and Rod McKuen are dead proof of that) in a world ruled by vapid pop and commercialism. They shouldn't feel obliged to have to keep penning the kinds of works that made them famous, nor should they feel they have to progress any further than what they want. But let this be a lesson, that trying to stay current is less important than trying to stay yourself, wherever you might find your musical path takes you.

5 out of 5 stars An Overview of the Pop Ambient Series..........2007-05-30

The label "Kompakt" label has been long since well known for it's output of Electronica/Techno, decided in the latter-half of 2000 to release a compilation that showcase not only the broad range of artists on the label (with a few artists licensed to appear on some volumes) , but a chance to compile some of the more subdued, delicate, restrained & intimate nature of the featured artists work. In this case "Ambient techno" with a decidedly accessible and unassuming slant (hence the "Pop Ambient" tag). Following the success of the release of the first "Ambient 2001" edition, every successive year has seen a new release (the most recent volume being "Pop Ambient 2007).

For any preconception of harsh, thumping, or even groove based music when the term "Ambient Techno" is used to describe the general overall genre of these volumes, you have to bear in mind. What each Pop Ambient series deals almost exclusively in, is that tracks don't concern themselves hard edged beats, or driving percussion, and reverberating basslines. And instead focus more, on directionless modal harmonies, and emphasizing densely layered, highly nuanced, and meticulously arranged ambient soundscapes. Which can on one track veers more towards soft gentle swirling synth tones and glistening piano-like melodies, and another track can feature a pastoral guitar strum, with looped piano chords and a sublime mix of bouncy rhythm, and light soundscapes. And other tracks can be dreamy glitch-lite tracks, with the sort of atmospheric drone-like twinkly/crackly shadings, full of radiant, gorgeously low-lit sound. And then have the following track deal an unhurried minimal percussion, working well alongside ethereal, woozy synths
.

Pop Ambient compilations seem to take in a multitude of influences..ranging from: Dub/ Ambient / Techno / Electronica / Glitch/ Electro-house & Soundscape music are all touched upon, explored and interpreted, crossed-referenced in a way that the sound & textures are absolutely compelling, yet the simplicity of the arrangements give this it `Pop' feel. It's not an series of compilations that is there to immediately impress, as it's far too considered and delicate in its approach to have an immediate effect. The spare twinkles of guitar and humming drones, and minimal undulating bass certainly wont have your friends begging you to sell your copy, but taken on it's own terms, and listened to without outside interruption, it's a series of albums that eventually win you over with a vast array of soft thrums, subtle rhythmic structures, meditative pieces, or melodic simple softly fading distant tunes, poignant moods and fractured sounds that skilfully blend deep, granular sound design, with the 4-bar rhythmic intensity, mixed with spare late-night introspective sound of diverting vamps, working alongside tracks which feature nearly imperceptible sparse polyrhythms, in a way that relax in a totally disconcerting manner.

The revolving door approach to each of the releases, ensures that although there is a certain musical aesthetic that each edition of these compilation works and adheres to. The rotation of different artists does give the series new material to work with (although some artist works, do feature throughout the series). I have all the volumes in the series so far (2001 - 2007), and I do find that they're all relatively similar in a lot of aspects, and thus relatively interchangeable. And everyone will probably have their favourite volumes (although a lot of people consider volumes 2002 / 2003 to be the finest volumes), you could probably pick up any one in the series, and have a relatively reasonable idea of what to expect from the other volumes. And for those with a passing interest in this series, then there's probably no way that you really need to buy all volumes...but for me personally, each volume works so beautifully in a downtempo and chilled environment, that for me....I found that each volume worked perfectly for late-nights at home, when the music needs to be low, or just when you fancy listening to something electronic/electronica, but without any driving progression, and just something that locks you into a particular mindset (solitude, introspection, reading, working on the computer, etc...) but I found that the sophisticated, yet relaxed music worked so for well for me, that I ended up grabbing each volume, and never regretting each purchase.

This is probably not something I'd recommend to every one, as there'll be those that are expecting something eclectic, and progressive, and maybe even something that musically takes them places...and those people will be disappointed, with this purchase. Also, there will be some like ambient music, but find the whole exercise (primarily because of the "Pop" tag), a little too accessible and electronic-influenced to really engage. That's fine!!, as this was probably never complied with you in mind. Admittedly this is a series of volumes that takes you nowhere fast.....'But wasn't that the point of Downtempo/Chillout music in the first place??'.

4 out of 5 stars Markus Gunter's Pilot makes it worth it.......2007-04-18

I got this CD on a whim. tracks 1 to 9 are okay.. nothing special. track 10 - Pilot - though makes this CD worth it. I'd have it looped for hours at a time. It's as if it was made to be looped, as it gently transitions you from its end to its beginning. 5 stars for this track. the rest.. 3.

Pete Tong is Britan's best loved dance DJ. He doesn't need an award to prove his popularity and he won't act cool to keep his credibility. The host of Radio 1's ground breaking Essential Selection show for a staggering eight years, he works within the mainstream, but is respected by the underground. Designed for dance gurus everywhere who can't wait until the clubs open and don't let the party finish until way after they get home! Make sure you check out the Clubbers Bible!
