"This is strictly 'ardcore!" shouts guest toaster Dr. Israel at the beginning of Ming & FS' third full-length, The Subway Series. The New York City duo was hailed as a great leap forward for both hip-hop and drum & bass when they dropped their debut, Hell's Kitchen, back in '99. Last year saw their follow-up, The Human Condition, fall into the classic sophomore slump. It's all there in the title: The overreaching pretension got in the way of the raw beats that made their name.

The Subway Series, however, takes its name from last year's New York intramural World Series, and Ming & FS draw on the irresistible energy of their city to bring pure joy back into their work. Their studio creations more accurately reflect the adrenalized, barely controlled chaos of their legendary live show, and cuts like first single "The Most Dangerous Drip" exhibit their tendency to shift seamlessly between tempos and genres, even within a few measures.

Ming & FS are working within a recognizable framework, rooted in a hip-hop and referencing techno, dub and jungle, but they stay away from tired samples. Instead, their original breaks evoke a classic hip-hop feel but are flexible enough to accelerate into two-step terrain. They are also now comfortable enough to let a tough beat showcase an MC like Nafis on "The L" and not worry about genre-splicing. The Subway Series is Ming & FS back on the hardcore track and headed for the next stop.

Ming+FS have always been a sort of homage for me to the olden days of hip-hop. They do not explicitly talk about how things used to be in the good old days, they actually make music that is LIKE the good old days. I loved Hell's Kitchen and the Human Condition, and this album only further proves their insane versatility. If you're put off by the initial feeling of complete chaos (as I was, I have to admit), give it a few more listens before it sinks in. Ming+FS aren't creating garbage tracks and then passing them off as "party music." This stuff is truly hardcore and bringing it back to the late '80s and early '90s. People who wear velour and fleece suits and talk in forced ebonics need not apply, this stuff is not like any J-Kwon joint. It's cerebral, strange, Amon Tobin-esque, and at times nerve-racking. However, the listener is very often rewarded with just a couple dozen of seconds of pure sonic bliss, the stuff Ming+FS pioneered in "Hell's Kitchen." You can hear the "old" Ming+FS in many tracks, and that's just to show they haven't lost their spark, that the sound is still there and they're only innovating while the rest of the "hip-hop" industry lays empty vocals over pathetic beats (hello, Mase).
The best tracks on the CD are "The Most Dangerous Drip" (and its reprise), "Misdirected", "World Wide", "Nevada", and "One For The Treble." The other tracks are passable, and it's obvious Ming+FS tried to appeal to the entire urban spectrum that they're accustomed to, not just a specific portion. For the headz, this is most definitely an album you should buy and keep, if you already have other Ming+FS albums. For everyone else, buy the new "Back to One", "Hell's Kitchen", and "Human Condition."
Don't discard this album just because you're not used to it, it will grow on you, guaranteed.

I do not belive that this represents Ming & FS's true talents and have fallen away from their once beautiful equation. The best song is The Most Dangerous Drip, and it is a mediocre one at that. Unless you absolutly love Ming & FS, I wouldn't recommend buying this cd. If you are interested in this type of music, you should definalty get their older cd (which is MUCH better) Hell's Kitchen.

Back to the junkyard and getting dirty! The new CD "Subway Series" is what the true Ming+FS fans have been waiting for. Every songs gives you what you have been looking for in this dead age of hip hop. With elements of experimental and old school mixes, this CD is going to wake up a lot of people to what Ming+FS are all about. There were times where I had to stop and scream at the dope ... beats they bring together. (Nice touch with the Didgeridoo) This CD shows you that Ming+FS are more then DJ's, they're Mad Scientist that work fierce in their lab to create some of the most mind-boggling music I've ever heard!!!!

The first time I listened to Subway Series, I lost my marbles, twice. This album is amazing! Subway Series returns to the Hip-Hop/Drum'N'Bass sound much like their first album Hell's Kitchen. Hell's Kitchen is still one of my favorite CD's,(Since 1999) but I think this one is better than Hell's Kitchen. Quit sleeping and get this album!

It was a very special night
I joined WFUV for 100 bucks, money well spent
to attend the show
Christine painted my pinkie with sparkle nail polish
on one hand and then insisted she do the other hand
so I would be balanced
I sang SNAG's and had milk + cookies
See her if you can, and this is a close second
to how good she is........

    Terry Cashman ain't Sinatra, but anyone who listens to his tunes without welling up a tear, smiling or get goosebumps either has no pulse or no soul. Cashman has a way of expressing his love for America's pastime in no less of a way then did Norman Rockwell. Any listener can immediately transport themselves to New York during the past century of Yankee baseball.A definite "must have' for any true Yankee fan.

    This compilation does not contain titles of real hit movies. It contains mostly sentimental or comic songs from old movies and even from the ones I managed to recognise only a handful were original. It struck me hard to find "Enae Volare" from "Les Visiteurs", the only title I ordered this compilation for, terribly altered but that might concern me alone. Finding "What a Feeling" from "Flashdance" similarly altered made me wonder... later, on the back of the box, I found a small note saying, as I could decrypt from French, that the songs in the album were not necessary original. I should've been warned about this in advance!
