Cynical types will accuse Disney of milking the "greatest" concept until it's drier than Tinkerbell's fairy dust ("Supercalafragilisticexpealidocious," "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Da," and "Heigh Ho" were hits off of Vol. 1; "Bare Necessities," "It's a Small World," and "Some Day My Prince Will Come" stole the show on Vol. 2), but a glimpse of this installment's track listing is all it'll take to squash their suspicions. Once again running reverse-chronologically, Vol. 3 opens with Jonatha Brooke's gorgeously achy ballad "I'll Try," from 2002's arguably not-so-great Return to Neverland, and gradually reaches back through the years to re-raise the curtain on Toy Story 2 ("When She Loved Me," performed by Sarah McLachlan), The Lion King ("Can You Feel the Love Tonight"), Mary Poppins (Julie Andrews's classic "A Spoonful of Sugar"), Pinocchio ("Give a Little Whistle"), and a bundle of treasured others, bottoming out at 1933's "Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf" from The Three Little Pigs. Vol. 3 is not without its weak moments--would a G-rated movie-goers' poll produce Beauty and the Beast's "Gaston" or The Hunchback of Notre Dame's "Topsy Turvy" on a hits list? Seems unlikely. Still, the bulk of these tracks are, as the included Little Mermaid song goes, "Part of Your World," and the spread of decades they represent proves their staying power. Don't expect Disney to latch the lid on its inexhaustible archives until a dozen or so of these records, each as strong as the next, beckon you back for more. --Tammy La Gorce

This is one of the better volums for kids and for those who are
above 18 but still have some kid in them

Timeless Disney Music.......2007-05-07

Nothing brings sweet recollection of Disney movies like hearing the wonderful songs. In an age where there so much music with no redeeming qualities, these Disney CDs are priceless. Wonderful for the entire family to listen to around the house or in the car while traveling. We can't help but sing along. We love that these are the original tracks from the movies! Wonderful! We now have all three volumes.

Disney songs are the best.......2006-03-18

I love the songs on this volume. I'll Try by Jonatha Brooke is such an amzing somg. I especially bought this CD fort that song but, was pleasantly surprsed by the rest of the playlist.

Great Disney Music.......2006-02-21

I have bought the first 2 volumes of Disney's Greatest Hits and the 3rd volume doesn't disapoint. My 2 young children love to listen to this CD and talk about the movies that they come from. A definate must have!

Not as good as Vol 1 and Vol 2.......2005-09-11

This Disney CD represents the "leftovers" that didn't make it on Vol 1 and Vol 2 of this series. Although it has some of my favorites, I don't listen to the entire CD often. Disney could have done a better job of editing the which sound files should make the cut on this one. Still, it's nice to have all 3 CDs.

Very good show which I hadn't heard of..........2007-05-13

I was very into theatre in high school and college and thought I was up on most musicals, but had never heard of this show until recently. It's comprised of three short stories which were adapted into the musical format. The first two stories are tied together very well, although the last seems tacked on. But the songs are catchy and it's fairly easy to figure out what's happening simply by listening to the songs. There are two songs which are tied for my favoritism: "It's a Fish" from Adam and Eve and "You Are Not Real" from Passionella. Check it out.

IT WAS EXACTLY WHAT I WAS LOOKING FOR. I WENT TO THE REVIVAL OF THE APPLE TREE ON BROADWAY IN NEW YORK CITY AND LOVED THE SCORE BUT THERE WASN'T A SOUNDTRACK AVAILABLE SO I PURCHASED THE ORIGINAL VERSION AND I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!

I still remember these songs after 40 years.......2006-11-05

I saw this show on the stage when it first ran, and have never forgotten it. The key to a good Broadway show is this question: Are you humming the songs when you leave the theatre? In the case of The Apple Tree, the answer is a resounding "Yes." I have been waiting 40 years for this show to be revived, and I have tickets for the revival opening in December at the Roundabout. I hope not to be disappointed, for the trio of Barbara Harris, a very young Alan Alda, and the late Larry Blyden were terrific. The three-part concept can be jarring because just when you're getting into the story, it ends -- but just enjoy the kind of songs they just don't write anymore.

Really 2.5.......2006-07-25

SO this is another show thats actually three one acts. The first "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is the best by far. It has really cute songs and nice plot. Thats the only reason I rounded this up from 2.5 to 3 stars. The rest of the show is nothing great. "Lady and Tiger" is short and boring. And "Passionella" is exactly what it sounds like, a knock off of Cinderella. But hey, its a good show for collectors and "The Diary of Adam and Eve" is nice. Favorite Song: "Its A Fish"

Boring material that you forget very easily.......2006-06-29

According to some reviews, this musical was supposed to be very good and I bought it. Unfortunately, I was quite dissapointed. It's composed of three different tales, the first one referring to the Adam & Eve biblical story. The lyrics here are very silly and tedious. The second tale, "The Lady or the Tiger?" contains songs that are simply awful, probably the worst ever written for a Broadway show. The third story, "Passionella", contains music that does nothing to make things better. The album contains a good informative booklet in English, German, French & Italian (as Sony uses to do)which says that Time magazine defined this show as "three moldy figs". I entirely agree. I would recommend this musical to those suffering from insomnia: it will put them to sleep right away.

A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

I recomend this cd to all theater fans. Even the ones who love a great, toe tapping score. The song they sing in titled Applause can be seen in the Bonus Performances on the DVD titled Broadways Lost Treasueres. That is how I first heard of Applause. It was very entertaining!

Love the CD ( I have had the vinyl recording ever since it came out), but wish it could be released on Video or DVD(does anyone out there know if this will ever happen?). I saw the television production with Lauren Bacall and Larry Hagman back in the early 1970's and saw an amateur production of it here in Melbourne as well and having always loved the whole concept of the movie, I feel that it transferred well to the stage.

"Soundtrack" recordings are records/cds transfered from from movies ONLY.

Live theatre does not use pre-recorded "soundtracks" - the casts perform live on stage and these "original cast recordings" are made in recording studios and designed for home listening.
PLEASE.... maintain your credibility by using the correct term!

Finally, after years of negotiation Decca Broadway is making the 1970 Tony winning musical APPLAUSE avaialble on Cd. Was it worth the wait? Well, yes and no. APPLAUSE is one of those late 60's musicals adapted from a hit play/novel/movie and offering lots of glitz and energy to cover up the deficiencies of the show itself.

Star Lauren Bacall provided the "star" quality though she has no real singing voice but as an actress she rises above it bringing the character to vivid life. Len Cariou sings well as Bacall's boyfriend but has very little to do.

Bacall gets the key gems and with two major exceptions any of the numbers in which she does not appear can be ignored. The first exception is the lively title song - a tribute to the power of applause. It has almost nothing to do with the plot but still stopped the show nightly. The other,is a dramatic soliloque for Penny Fuller in the (virtually) non-singing role of Eve: "One Hallowe'en." This is Eve's big moment to really show her true colours and Fuller makes the most of it. Missing from the recording - becasue it is a dialogue scene - is the following moments when Eve recieves humiliating comeuppance.

The original Lp release was done by ABC records and had an annoying "boxy" sound quality that has not been corrected on the cd. The very short selection has been filled out with demo recordings by composer Charles Strouse and a couple of the cut songs sound quite interesting. Packaging is up to Decca Broadway's usual high standards.

i have a copy of this recording on LP, and have enjoyed it for approx 25 yrs. couldn't wait for the cd. bought it the first time i saw it.
i am wondering if anyone has seen the tv production of APPLAUSE starring LAUREN broadcast circa 1974 on tv? and is there any possibility of obtaining a copy on anything? the production was FANTISTIC, to say the least!!!

Sinead O'Connor really knows how to end a career. True, she's been trying to do it since the early `90s, through incendiary action (ripping up a photo of Pope John Paul II on Saturday Night Live) and regularly spaced announcements of her retirement. The release of She Who Dwells comes with the caveat that it is O'Connor's last willful act and musical testament—and, who knows, her third attempt to flee the music industry may stick. If so, it's a shame because after nearly a decade of flailing musically, O'Connor rediscovered her true voice in 2002 with Sean-Nos Nua, an album of traditional Irish songs re-imagined in surprisingly fresh ways.

She Who Dwells (the full title is long enough to make Fiona Apple gasp for breath) is a two-CD set, but in typical O'Connor fashion it's oddly framed. Disc one is a collection of 19 rarities and previously unreleased tracks split three very different ways. There are more traditional Irish tunes, her electronic collaborations with Massive Attack and Asian Dub Foundation, and a range of covers that includes songs written or made famous by Aretha Franklin, Gram Parsons, the B-52s, and Abba. (These latter tracks shouldn't work, but for the best evidence they do, check out her almost Tex-Mex pop version of "Chiquitita.")

Disc two is a more traditional career-ending retrospective; it's a 13-track recording taken from a late 2002 concert at Vicar Street Theatre in Dublin. About half the songs come from Sean-Nos Nua, with three songs each lifted off I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got and Universal Mother,. O'Connor is backed by a great band that features Irish music stalwarts Donal Lunny and Sharon Shannon. As good as they are, it's O'Connor's voice that stuns throughout, whether singing the Irish blues of "I Am Stretched on Your Grave" or a version of "Nothing Compares to U" that contains both flute and a stately cello solo. One hopes this isn't the last we hear from O'Connor, but even if it is she's left us on a pure, high note. --Keith Moerer

Oh, yeh, WAY too much here, but some of it is ESSENTIAL.

High points include 100,000,000,000-watt renditions of the implausibly bitter B-52s rocker "Ain't It A Shame" and Abba's tear-jerking "Chiquitita," both of which are exhilarating. Originals of distinction include the spiritually and psychologically indeterminant "Emma's Song," plus the harrowing lament "No Matter How Hard I Try."

Sinead's Most Interesting album!.......2006-12-10

It took me three years to decide to buy this album. I wasn't sure at the beginning because it was a compilation of collaborations, b-sides and unreleased material plus a live album. I've never been into live albums because the songs never sound as good as the original versions, or unreleased songs because they usually suck.

However, the live album is great. It fills you up with such an amazing energy that you just want to play it again and again. I wish I could've gone to that concert!

The studio album has excellent songs I couldn't live without. "O Filii et Filiae" has these strange african-christian arrangements that make it one of the highlights of the album. "My Love I Bring" also has an excellent combination of celtic-rasta arrangements. Her voice on "Chiquitita" sounds beautiful. "It's All Good" could've easily been a smash hit in 2003. "A Thousand Broken Mirrors" is one of her best collaborations. "Dense Water, Deeper Down" has an amazing country-folk vibe that makes it the best track on the CD. "Big Bunch of Junkie Lies" reminds you of her album "I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got", and while its lyrics are somewhat a cliche, it's a beautiful song.

I can't wait to buy her new upcoming album called "Theology"!

I really can't be bothered if this is her last album or not, obviously its not there is a new one out. This album is simply great, and I can't wait to buy the new one. Lets hope that she doesn't stop singing.

Last year, Sinead O'Connor, supposedly "retired" from the music business, released one of the best albums of 2005, the full-throtle reggae "Throw Down Your Arms". I have never been a huge fan of Sinead (too "off-stream" in too many ways), but having loved last year's album, it brought me to this album.

"She Who Dwells" (2 CDs, 32 tracks, 146 min., released in 2003) actually is titled much longer (similar to Fiona Apple's "When the Pawn"), but nevermind that, it's the music that speaks. CD1 (19 tracks, 78 min.) brings a bunch of originals, traditionals, covers, B-tracks, and other obscurities, and guess what, it works really well. From covers of Nazareth's "Love Hurts" and ABBA's "Chiquita" to originals such as "Brigidine Diana" and "Emma's Song" to traditionals such as "Song of Jerusalem", it all sounds ecstatic. But the real beauty of this album is CD2 (13 tracks, 68 min.) which brings Sinead in concert, and how she shines! The concert brings together a superb mix of pop, celtic and reggae. Yes, it includes her mega-hit "Nothing Compares to U" (in an acoustic version) but even better are the mood songs (such as "Molly Malone" and "John I Love You") and the more exuberant songs such as the reggae-flavored "Fire on Babylon", foreshadowing her next album.

Sinead has long left the main-stream music business, now releasing albums under full control, and to great result. Disregarding her potitical beliefs, she has been releasing great music, much of it under the mainstream radar, and for that she is to be recommended. "She Who Dwells" is, much like last year's "Throw Down Your Arms", a superb album. Highly Recommended!

An amazing emotional performance.......2006-02-14

After listening to this live performance, you will realize that Sinead O'connor is a real human being and not just a controversial rebel who ripped up the Pope's picture and sports a shaved head, but is also a loving mother and singer. Sinead's live verision of "Molly Malone" is amazing, every time we listen to her perform this song my father and I break down to tears it's so emotional. Sinead nearly cries at the end of most of her songs and the audio on the performance is just like being there(take my advice,I've seen her live), very powerful. I strongly recommend all serious Sinead O'connor fans to purchase this moving performance!!!!

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Really Good Collection.......2004-07-11

I bought this in part because it had soundtracks to tv shows that are unavailable. My husband and I watch aome British programming. Many of the theme songs are for what seems like obscure British shows. That said; it has been enjoyable to hear music that I would normally never hear. Some music does sound tinny; some are very very rich, and some music is derived from actual preformances from the original artists. I think this is worth buying because is has a wonderful blend of music. The pieces are full soundtracks so they includes the parts of the theme song which are often edited out. I think the orchestra's who preformed the music did a great job. I have MonsterMania which redoes the soundtracks to the Godzilla movies. The interpretation is less heavy and stark than the preformance we associate with the original soundtrack; but I regard it as a new way to appreciate the music and all the componets which make the song unique.

Seattle's Smoosh are a sister duo who make exceedingly endearing, piano/synth-based indie pop and have shared the stage with Death Cab for Cutie, The Presidents of the United States of America, Cat Power and Sleater-Kinney. Oh… and they're 10 and 12 years old.

But these self-directed musical prodigies can hold their own against any fully grown bands. ROCKRGRL magazine compared their sound to "a stripped down version of the first side of Pet Sounds." Seattle's The Stranger puts it even more succinctly in saying "Smoosh is awesome." We think you'll agree.

She Like Electric, their debut album, was recorded at the legendary Egg Studios (Posies, Young Fresh Fellows, Presidents of the USA.) in Seattle in a mere three days (with 2 more days for mixing) under the steady hand of engineer/producer Johnny Sangster. And, yes, every note of this album was written and performed by Asya and Chloe with no adult intervention.

The band has already gained a wide following of fans, including Cat Power's Chan Marshall, who has been finishing her shows of late by lip synching to a live version of Smoosh's song "Rad."

From the joyful and contemplative ("To Walk Away From") to the silly and giggly, ("The Quack") to the angry and bittersweet ("But Now I Know"), urgency prevails.

I don't know. They tried...but failed. 'Bottlenose' was just...it actually reminded me of the music they put on those Anime shows. It was crazy...really...the rapping is cheesy...what else? I have to give 'em props for the music they actually play. They are good at that. But otherwise...I just don't know what to say.

Incredible talent that's still developing..........2006-09-14

I have listened to this band only during their interview with Nic Harcourt on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic. I just think that it's awesome that some kids with potential and some success don't have huge egos and are still pretty wholesome. I don't think it's appropriate to compare their music to the other indie rock bands out there, being that they're 12 or 13 and they don't have any pedigree or training. The interview says it all. They're just starting out. I look forward to their music five years from now when they've had more experience.

When one looks into the genre of young musical groups, most of what you'll find is fluffy pop fare. Groups from Boyz II Men to Hanson to Britney Spears have become commonplace on today's musical radar. That's one of the things that make Seattle's Smoosh so impressive. They've managed to shed the fluffy pop sound of their contemporaries and do something wholly original. They may be the first mainstream child indie rock band.
Smoosh, a duo featuring thirteen year-old Asya (their parents refuse to give out their last names to try and grant their children and a normal childhood) on keyboards and vocals and her eleven year-old sister Chloe already have a resume that would make the most seasoned musicians blush. They've still got a few more years before they can drive, but they've already opened for Jimmy Eat World, Rilo Kiley, Sleater-Kinney, and spent the last summer touring with the eels. Their newest release, "Free to Stay" has been released on the quickly emerging Barsuk Records (also home to They Might Be Giants, Rilo Kiley and Death Cab for Cutie).
Asya's keyboards roar with a grungy flair closest to fitting a Sleater-Kinney record on the opening track "Find a Way". Songs like this is what makes young teen bands stars. With their big sound and catchy melodies, Smoosh picks up right where they left off from their debut album, 2004's "She Like Electric". Asya's sound is quite overpowering, especially using to two different keyboard effects at once. This creates a beautiful wall of sound behind Smoosh. Smoosh manages to make music that has an eccentric mix of Sarah Sleans, voice, beautiful harmonies, and piano-work, Hanson's incredibly smart, radio-friendly pop, with Le Tigre's grunge-movement rock. The record is never really groundbreaking (especially in lyrical continent), but it's great pop music from a duo with nothing but infinite possibilities of ahead of them.
Drummer Chloe's work, while not being very technical is very clean. She has a lot more control than drummer I've seen that are twice her age. Tracks like "Organ Talk" showcase both the bands humor and their musicianship as we can the start of the band branching off, ever so slowly, into other genres.
The record does have it faults though. "I Would Go" has some blatantly auto-tuned vocals. Asya's voice is still developing and with some more work, she's dto do more with her voice, but she seems a bit bound by her lack of experience. Tracks Clap On", would greatly benefit from Asya throwing in a bit of gravel into her voice. The sloppiness of the record, for the most part, offers irrereplacable charm, but can be a bit too much for musical perfectionists. The lyrical content is also very repititivie, but the fact is, Asya's a better writer than people three times older than her. Once these early emotions, the ones that a there in every teenage child grow up, she'll be better for it and finally read to leave foll
I recommend Free to Stay for any pop junkee. It's a good listen, a good record, and a lot of fun. I've gotten this record many spins before finishing this review and I'm likely to have many more in the near future. Shortcomings notwithstanding, music like this is exactly what the state of modern music needs right now. And just think. Their eight year-old sister just started bass lessons.

Smoosh are Smashing.......2006-07-10

The pure innocence of this project is most appealing. In a day & age when provocative images and negative messages prevail in music, Smoosh are very refreshing. But never mind that, these girls ROCK! Highlights for me are "Pygmy Motorcycle," which demonstrates solid, sophisticated song writing, "Make it Through," a brilliant catchy single, and "The Quack," a playful creative cut that just makes you smile. The entire album shines, but I just decided to highlight a few personal favorites. Smoosh are extremely talented, fun, and passionate. The older you are, the further back they take you to a day when life was more simple and fun. The song writing is even better on the 2nd album, but this is an incredible debut. Good show, girls!

Great job!.......2006-04-19

I found this album to be honest and genuine. Many of the tracks display real budding talent and intellect that is not often seen in 9 and 11 year olds. Other tracks are silly, with screaming and giggling, and there are moments when Asya doesn't sing on-key or mumbles the sometimes-repetative lyrics. MTV material they are not. But one thing I can't call them is bad. For a pair of youngsters who accidentally fell into the music scene with zero formal training, this is a fantastic piece of work. No, the songs on this album won't be winning any awards, but compare them to your average teen/pre-teen pop singer, and Smoosh is a refreshing breeze. If you're looking for manufactured-sounding music, digitally enhanced vocals, and generic love songs, look elsewhere, because what you're going to get with "She Like Electric" is two girls having a lot of fun.

Since releasing this album, the girls have grown up a bit, and their musical skills have improved vastly. Catch them live, or find some footage of them live on Google video or YouTube. "Sucks"? "No talent"? I think not.

Great job, girls; eagerly awaiting your next album!

I didnt think it was possible..........2006-02-22

for Tracy Nelson to get better. I remember hearing Down So Low when it first came out and was stunned. Until listening to this live recording, I didnt think it could be improved upon.. but I guess age and experience have given her the ability to make it even more mesmerizing. I bought the CD, got in my truck, drove off, put in the CD, and started to listen. I pulled off the road because I didnt think I should be driving.

As the other reviewers note, this is one thrilling performance. Her voice has gotten richer, and the delivery cant be beat. "God Will" is worth the price of the CD all by itself.

For those who are long time fans, listen to her original version of some of these songs, and the ones on this CD back to back. You will hear a wonderful transformation.

I really can't top the first three reviews. They said it all. I will add that I was glad to see a version of "God Will", since I love that song. Hearing it sung by Tracy, who has been my favorite singer since I first heard her back in Madison, Wisconsin, in college, was a real thrill.
I was glad to see the arrangments taking a bit of a back seat to her voice on this CD, allowing her "blues belter" vocals to come to the foreground. The slower than usual tempos on some cuts also helped to highlight Tracy's incredible vocal talent.
I agree with James, if you have a chance to see her live, don't miss it. She can stand three feet away from the microphone when singing, and still blow you right out of the room with the power of her voice.
Buy it...you won't regret it.

Missing Out On This CD Is A Crime!.......2003-07-05

Devotees of singer Tracy Nelson (and I certainly number myself among them) have been waiting for years for an official 'live' release from this phenomenal artist. Tracy has released 21 albums prior to this release, all of which have their wonderful moments and some are downright clasics(including 2001's independently released EBONY & IRONY, as well as I FEEL SO GOOD, and MOVE ON from the 1990s (both on Rounder Records), and several re-releases from her early days in the 60s and 70s). It's all great stuff, but even folks who love her studio work have been known to come out of one her concerts utterly astonished. It's almost as though even the best studio settings cannot do this astonishingly powerful singer justice.

I've always said that if I were a waiter in a club where Tracy Nelson was performing, I'd probably be fired before the night was through. Because I'd doubtless just stand there stock still, tray in hand and jaw dropped to my chest (if not the floor) in a state of complete awe.

So at last, we have the live album that many of us have been awaiting for the last two decades or longer. It's probably a cliche to say that it was "worth the wait," but in fact, it was.
This release is the work of a mature artist, one still very much in control of her instrument, but also whose artistry and vision has only deepened over the years. She wrote her signature song, the classic "Down So Low" when she was in her early twenties--a remarkable feat for someone so young--but the version included on this recording seems to come from an even deeper place. She sings every song on this record with conviction and authority, but nowhere is it more evident than on "Down So Low" and on Memphis Slim's blues classic "Mother Earth"--both of which she recorded for the first time in 1968.

Tracy has assembled a crackerjack band for this recording. She does not always work with a horn section, but when she does, the results are nearly always stellar. The horns give her that extra oomph and send her already soaring vocals into the stratosphere. And she has found a great setting and a more than enthusiastic audience in that Tennessee prison. This is an audience starved for music, and even if they had no idea who Tracy was beforehand, they respond eagerly and gratefully to what they soon realize is a truly first rate performance.

The selection of material could not have been better. Aside from the two early classics mentioned above, there are new versions of songs from throughout Tracy's lengthy career. She opens with a "I Need All the Help I Can Get," originally recorded in the 90s for Rounder. It's a rousing opener and sets the tone nicely. She follows with a song that she has never actually released on record, although she has been known to perform it live before, Patsy Cline's classic "Walkin' After Midnight." Tracy is one of the few singer's who can take on a Patsy Cline number and successfully make it her own. (Eat your heart out, LeAnn and k.d.) So in the space of two songs, she demonstrates her astonishing range and versatility. She follows up with another new track, Lyle Lovett's "God Will," a song which fits her voice perfectly and which demonstrates that she did not leave all sense of irony back with the last record's "ebony."

Her powerful r&b shouters never cease to astound, and stand up to repeated plays. But those repeated plays will also demonstrate the subtlety with which she approaches the ballads included here. Her phrasing on "God Will" and on "Tennessee Blues," first recorded in 1972 or '73, is controlled, disciplined and intelligently executed. She could teach a master class--provided she could find students worthy of her time.

Tracks that will be more or less familiar to fans are given new life in their live versions. Songs like the recent "Got A New Truck" and 1974's "After The Fire Is Gone" were originally recorded as duets (and remarkable ones they were too; the former having been a joint effort with another great lady, Marcia Ball, and the latter a collaboration with the legendary Willie Nelson--who is, by the way, NO RELATION), and as good as the originals were, it's great to hear Tracy tackle them as solo numbers. Nearly all previously recorded tracks have been revamped in ways that fans will find interesting, if not illuminating.

Nearly every review of Tracy Nelson's recorded work or of her live performances includes the observation that it's a downright shame that she is not better known. That's another cliche that's become hard to avoid when talking about this great singer. From everything I know about her, I don't think she particularly cares about reaching superstar status. She is first and foremost, an artist. But like many of her devoted fans, I still am eager to spread the word to as many receptive souls as possible. I figure it's doing them a favor.

Tracy Rocks The Jail House.......2003-06-23

When the hell is the public ever going to catch on to this woman? Most of the record stores I've visited have only had one or two copies in stock. That is an absolute sin. In her 35 year recording career, this is Tracy Nelson's 21st release - 22nd, if you count the Best of Tracy Nelson / Mother Earth - yet for some reason, she is not a household word. (Well, I could give you lots of reasons, but don't get me started). Established superstars (such as Willie Nelson, Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor, to name just a few) have praised her for years as "one of the best voices around" and "a singers singer". She has a powerful, expressive voice, demonstrating a talent that is almost superhuman, but inexplicably, she remains a secret. Her music is known only to music insiders, and a few lucky fans, who seem to number only in the thousands, instead of the millions she deserves.

For her first live album, recorded before inmates in the West Tennessee Detention Center, Tracy revisits two of her old standards from her first Mother Earth album - Down So Low (her self-penned theme song) and Mother Earth, an wonderful blues reflection on mortality written by Memphis Slim, from which her old band took their name. Esquire magazine once called Down So Low, "the saddest song ever written". Down So Low has been recorded by Linda Ronstadt, Etta James and Maria Muldaur (among others). It has never received a stronger treatment than it does here. Her legendary vocal prowess has only improved over the years, and her reputation as singing powerhouse is well supported by this release. This version of Down So Low compares quite favorably with the original, which she recorded in 1968, proving that she still has it. How many singers can re-record the same song after 35 years and sound better than ever doing it? I can't easily think of a single one.

The venue has an impressive effect on the selections. For anyone who has ever been to jail, or if you are a family member, or the loved one of a prisoner / ex-prisoner, some of these songs will take on a heartbreaking intimacy that is almost too personal to bear. When Tracy sings her theme song, Down So Low, suddenly, for me, it is no longer a song of unrequited love; instead I hear my own mother wailing in anguish at the first arrest of my older brother ("When you went away, I cried for so long...").

I have been privileged to hear Tracy live many times, the experience of which no record can ever fully convey - her voice is just too powerful. Before I even read the notes, I looked at the track listing and saw Tennessee Blues, and my first thought was, "I've never heard her do that live. That's an old one". Almost reflexively, I started to run the lyrics through my head, and a chill ran down my spine. "If I had my way, I'd leave here today, I'd leave in a hurry..." the song starts. Instantly, images of those inmates flooded my mind, smiles and maybe a few tears on their contented faces. All of a sudden, the identification they must have experienced with that lyric and the stark reality of their situation came pouring out of the words right at me, and the song took on a new, heartbreaking, yet comforting profundity. I can see those inmates in their drab uniforms (no matter what color, prison garb is drab), nodding their heads and agreeing 1000% with the sentiment behind the song. "A place I could use... a place I could lose those Tennessee Blues". Wow. Tennessee Prison. Tennessee Blues.

Tracy doesn't stop there. She has finally committed to record her version of Walkin' After Midnight, made famous by the late Patsy Cline. Tracy's rendition owes nothing to Patsy; as few singers can, she manages to make it her own without dredging up comparison to Patsy, or detracting at all from the memory of the original.

She also revisits some of her best stuff with new verve, including her self-penned (with assistance from Marcia Ball) Got A New Truck (a song I confess I loathed until this reading - but I'm not into autos) and a solo version of the duet for which she and Willie Nelson received a Grammy for Best Country Duo in 1974, After The Fire Is Gone. She has lost none of her incredible voice, and seems to improve with age, like fine marijuana.

Added to this wonderful mix of Blues, R & B and Country (and ALL her albums are a wonderful mix of Blues, R & B and Country, with just a smidge of Country-Blues influenced Rock to round it all out) is a thoroughly original arrangement / cover of Lyle Lovett's lyrically ironic God Will, which may just be the most understated and effective track on the whole album, since it suits her style perfectly and offers her fans choice to add to their list of favorite Tracy Nelson tunes.

Since acquiring my copy last week, I have played this album no less than two dozen times. It gets fresher and more creative with each listen. If you are familiar with Tracy at all, you will not hesitate to acquire this release. If you're not, I can think of few better introductions to her craft - notably her 1969 classic Country album (Mother Earth Presents Tracy Nelson Country - Mercury Records - available on a Reprise CD) or her 1978 masterpiece Homemade Songs (Flying Fish Records - available on a CD also containing her complete second Flying Fish issue, Come See About Me). Live From Cell Block D.......2003-06-18

First of all - let's get one thing straight. Tracy Nelson can do no wrong. That said, this is an incredible live album, which was a long time in coming.

I'm sure jokes will be told about singing to a 'captive' audience, but it takes a true talent to be able to get away with singing a song in a jail entitled "Send Me to the 'Lectric Chair".

Other highlights are her own "Down So Low" "Tennessee Blues" and "After the Fire is Gone". Actually, as is true of every Tracy Nelson album, there is not a bad song in the bunch. Listen to "God Will" or "Mother Earth" and try not to be moved.

This disc includes some songs that, while I like them, are not what people might consider the "best" of G&S. Of course, anything by G&S is good, it's still not the "best of the best."

There has got to be something that better represents the G&S canon.

Don't know about those other reviewers, but I just can't make out very much of the lyrics. Maybe those folk have better CD players or better hearing, but it's pretty much a blur to me. I strongly recommend "The Ultimate Gilbert and Sullivan" instead.
