Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

4 out of 5 stars classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

4 out of 5 stars Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Album Description

Volume 3: A Child's Guide to Good and Evil. With their soaring psychedelia, achingly pure folk-rock and Zappa/Beefheart strangeness, these seminal underground gems from the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band--Part One, Vol. 2 and A Child's Guide To Good & Evil--can be seen as encyclopedic primers of the late-'60s Los Angeles musical experience. These long-awaited legit CD debuts come direct from the original analog master tapes, with 2 bonus tracks CD, interviews with key band members, and never-before-seen photos from the band's personal archive! 14 tracks. 2001 reissue

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Genius.......2007-06-16

These guys are well underated. There sense of humour production skills and musical ability are right up there. Though I feel this is the weaker of the 3 its still a must own. They for some reason remind me of the genuis that was WEEN a few years ago.

4 out of 5 stars Far Out.......2007-02-08

Volumes 1, 2 & 3 are a must have for any fans of Pop-sike & Freakbeat. It's amazing these guys were somewhat square. Good stuff. Spent many a freak-out listening to a comp of the 1st 2 records way back when. I'm really pleased to see they've been reiuused (nice job, too!).

2 out of 5 stars Better than Volume 2.......2007-01-06

But not as good as Volume 1. Experimental indeed, 1:32 of pure silence on WWIII...it was the 60's man. Annoying chatter from Markely not as annoying on this one, either becuase its less in the mix, less songs have it or sometimes it actually works. Take with a big grain of salt (or a big grain of something) and you might be allright. Better as a concise ablum than earlier disjointed efforts but not as many great songs (but less sucky ones at least).

2 out of 5 stars Enh, it's OK.......2005-08-11

Watered down folk-psych circa 1968. If you think Country Joe and The Fish is too hard rock then this is for you. Too too flower power and not very imaginative, in fact it's rather boring. Perhaps it should be retitled Exile On Yawn Street.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it -Get it-Dig it-Enjoy it.......2004-07-31

I have over 150 hand picked items on my Wish List. They have been studied and carefully selected. This CD is so
under rated-it is my next purchase cluster. I want it, I want it, I want it. I heard this years ago, when I recorded a few songs from a friend's LP. (LP means vinyl recording, lads) This CD should be showcased all over Amazon. I want it, I want it, I want it.

Product Description

It could almost be fiction. The house passing as a home, the harem, passing as a family, the rising star brutally murdered in his prime, the dream, the con; the end. Arrow Brown inhabited the same south-side Chicago landscape as Afro-Noir author Iceberg Slim's ghetto characters, drawing inspiration from the same dark sources that colored Airtight Willie, White Folks and Blue Howard. He was drawn to the underground, fancying himself a rogue entrepreneur. Throughout the late 60s, his personal and professional business appears to have taken place largely outside the law. Yet, like Slim, he had massive creative impulses to contend with. By the early 70s, Brown put together an oddball cast of family, friends, and girlfriends, all interchangeable, and created a musical commune; a band, a production company and a record label. Unable to completely divorce himself from his former life, he named this company Bandit. The results of these efforts play like a sweet soul Enoch Light, putting beauty and genius in front of commercial viability. The lush, sweeping strings that introduced each track draw the listener into Brown's hipster fantasy world, sharply incongruent with the reality of his harsh existence. While the long, dreamy introductions set these songs apart from other soft soul at the time, they kept the singles off the radio, often times being too long and complicated for mainstream consumption. Nothing even resembling a hit came off the pen of Arrow Brown, this accounts heavily for the lack of interest the world showed the Bandit label in its brief eight year existence. Package includes twenty remastered tracks by The Arrows, Altyrone Deno Brown, The Majestic Arrows, Johnny Davis, and Linda Balintine, and a sixteen page booklet detailing the label's entire futile history.

Amazon.com

The Numero Group serves up a collection of unheard 70's soul from obscure South-side Chicago label Bandit Records. Between 1969 and 1981, the handful of 45s and single LP released on the Bandit imprint were orchestrated by musical/business mastermind Arrow Brown-- the reissue liner notes detail the somewhat incestuous group of family, friends, and oddballs he assembled to perform his compositions. The result is smooth vocal soul, heavy on the strings, informed as much by the Philly sound of the Spinners and the Delfonics as by Chicago natives the Chi-Lites. Highlights include The Majestic Arrows' falsetto stylings on "Doing It For Us" and "Going To Make A Time Machine", and the pre-adolescent love musings on "Sweet Pea" sung by the unusually-named Altyrone Deno Brown (7-year old son of label proprietor Arrow). --Ben Heege

5 out of 5 stars buy this record for sure.......2006-11-02

this album is money, and for that matter this whole eccentric soul series is money. i got two of these discs so far, the other being the deep soul label (also terrific). singer neko case highly recommended the big mack label in a recent ny times article. i'm definitely getting the rest of the series asap. as for the bandit label... the opening track, 'one more time around' is butter...there's some 7 year old kid, i think i remember reading that he was 7, but he's something special. basically, there isn't a bad track and if you enjoy old soul music, that really rich, gritty soul -- these discs are 100% for you. bravo and kudos to the numero group label for getting these out!

5 out of 5 stars Boo Bounce's Back.......2004-09-20

Gangsta Boo comes back with Enquiring Minds 2: The Soap Opera. This is my second favorite CD from her. She flows well on her own, but can lay it down proper with back up. She raps about her days dealing, backstabbing buisness partners, and life in general. Buy this CD if you love hardcore rap. Buy this CD if you love good music in general.

3 out of 5 stars A Release Without The Production of Juicy J & DJ Paul.......2004-07-25

I think this album is good, but the production of the album is weak. I think that Gangsta Boo should have found someone who has some good production for her lyrics. She is a good underground rapper. "Spinnin & Sippin", in my opinion, is the strongest track on thia album. This releass is a good effort to show her fans that she can come out some good songs without the production of Juicy J & DJ Paul. If you are a hardcore Gangsta Boo fan, I suggest you to cop this album before it goes out-of-print.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It's a keeper!.......2007-05-11

This is, hands down, my 3-year-old son's favorite CD. We both have the entire thing memorized. It plays almost constantly when we are in the car, and my son sits in the back seat and hums along. He now recognizes several of the pieces and can point them out when he hears them on other albums, in movies, etc.

My reaction upon receiving this CD as a gift was similar to that of another reviewer...I inwardly groaned at the thought of classical music produced on a synthesizer (the sound is similar to that found on the popular Baby Einstein albums...Baby Bach, Baby Mozart, etc.) However, my son really seems to enjoy the simpler sound, and I have come to appreciate it as well (note that this is not true of all of the Classical Child albums...some retain the "true" sound of the original instruments).

We have several children's CDs of classical music, but this is by FAR the one that we listen to most. Highly recommended to introduce your baby/toddler/pre-schooler to the wonderful world of classical music.

5 out of 5 stars The Classical Child Is Born.......2003-07-11

I received "The Classical Child is Born" as a gift for my 2nd daughter and I thought...oh great, ANOTHER classical CD for babies and to be honest, I was going to re-gift it to one of several friends who were expecting. For some reason I didn't.
My older daughter is turning 3 next week and always tells us she "doesn't want the music on" when we are in the car, whether it be ours or hers. I popped this CD in the other day and for the first time, she said "don't turn it off" and continued to tell me that she liked it and asked me questions about the music. My 3 month old absolutely HATES being in the infant carrier and having to stop at red light is sheer torture because she fusses and cries. But, the day I put in the Classical Child is Born CD, she didn't cry or fuss once while we were in the car and, yes, she was awake!
Even I enjoy this music and am on your web site specifically to order another CD, probably the Ballet series since my 3 year old will be starting ballet in the fall, and the Early to Rise as she will also be starting preschool and I can't wait to order the Xmas CD.
Thank you for making such great music for kids! I will definitely purchase and recommend this to other moms I know!
Leslie Zander

I love this CD! My students love this CD! We often use it as background music while working as individuals or as small groups. It presents some of my favorite pieces with a whimsical flair. Even rap and heavy-metal listeners request it. (The complex polyphonic music even helps stimulate brain activity. For how much more can one teacher ask?)

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26

These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.

I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

5 out of 5 stars Glorious John!.......2000-03-19

Every bar of this wonderful music is to be relished! This sadly neglected composer had a musical gift that put him up there with Ravel, Debussy and others who are more celebrated today. In true British fashion, we will fete the artists of other nations while ignoring the talent we have at home. When I play any piece of music I try to take the date and put the piece in with its contemporaries. John Ireland was not a flashy, innovative composer who shocked a generation. He did not excite audiences with hair raising disonances like Mahler in his symphonies nor did he create new rhythmic explosions like Stravinsky in his 'Sacre de Printemps'. He did not scandalise audiences with shocking material like Bartok in his 'Miraculous Mandarin'. Nothing he produced gave the chattering classes, who control what is deemed to be the flavor of the month, anything to lionize, hence his neglect during his lifetime and after. Instead he composed generally simple tuneful pieces that please the ear and make the heart feel lighter because of a gentle, nostalgic quality in which he can summon up the magic of a long ago Soho summer's day or the smiling face of a dear friend as in 'Merry Andrew'. His understatement of emotion throughout is quintessetially English in mood for despite Ireland's 100% Scottish parentage he seems to me to encapsulate the mood of that splendid flower of a generation who went away to die in WWI. The whistful touches of 'Summer Evening' or 'two Pastels' means to me that I cannot play anything else this session after I have played these atmospheric pieces. The pianist here gives us these works on a budget label, 70 minutes of lovely music that will delight any lover of 20th Century post-impressionistic music. I just wish I could discover these pieces all over again. His neglect is unforgivable.

5 out of 5 stars A good introduction to a fairly unfamiliar composer.......1999-08-18

The name of John Ireland, 1879-1962, may not ring many bells except to those very conversant with piano literature. Indeed the two Naxos releases (8.553700) and (8.553889) contain music that to my knowledge I have never heard before; and I am most grateful to Naxos (as I always am) for introducing me to this composer. The booklets tell of his far from happy life so we can concentrate on his not inconsiderable talents. The first set contains "In those days," "Sarnia," "Prelude in E flat," "London Pieces," "Ballade," and "Columbine." Volume 2 gives us "Rhapsody," "Two Pieces," "Decorations," "Leaves from a Child's Sketchbook," "Sonatina," and several other pieces. Much of this will recall Debussy and some is comparable to similar efforts by MacDowell. The cover notes mention Gershwin, Stravinsky, and Ravel. But like any good composer, his past must needs be incorporated into his music; and perhaps the term "bitter-sweet" used by the copywriter is as good as any to sum up these two programs. John Lenehan plays with feeling. Despite a rival set on another label, these Naxos discs are half the price and certainly to be highly recommended

4 out of 5 stars A worthy successor to volume 1.......2005-12-05

The carol album vol 1 has been reviewed very favorably by many people, yet no one has given vol 2 any notice here. That is puzzling, because this disc offers just about the same enjoyment as the other.

There are two familiar carols, While Shepherd Watched and Hark! The Herald Angel Sing, which are given fresh and vigorous interpretations that blow away any dust that has accumulated on them over the years. Quelle est cette odeur agreable is virtually a tiny French cantata that is very beguiling. Ther is no rose of swych virtu is one of the lovliest of the many English medieval carols, which is given a 20th century setting too. (the track listing reverses the order of these pieces.) One of the unlikely highlights for me is Lullay, lullay: Als i lay on a Yoolis night. This is a 700 year old melody sung unaccompanied by a single soprano voice through 12 stanzas. Even at almost 8 minutes long it doesn't seem boring, but manages to speak across time to me and ponder the nativity scene.

If you liked the Carol Album Vol 1, you will enjoy this too.
