Dance music is all about the remix, and no genre is safe. As proof, San Francisco's Six Degrees Records have loosed a ragtag band of DJs upon that venerable institution, the Christmas classic. Bing Crosby, Andy Williams, Dean Martin, and others all get the turntable treatment here, from the likes of Dan the Automator, Mocean Worker, and Robbie Hardkiss. As one might suspect, the kitsch/fun factor is off the charts. "Baby It's Cold Outside," for instance, lounges comfortably beside any exotic, Les Baxter-style oddity, as Louis Armstrong's crackly vocals meet a slow breakbeat snare drum. Meanwhile, Beef Wellington fashions a swinging beat around Crosby's "Happy Holidays," and successfully mixes it with the song's jaunty horn section. Other attempts are less endearing; versions of "Joy to the World," and "The First Noel" inspire only energetic rolls in the graves of their composers. Still, even if you believe some wax simply shouldn't be tampered with, this collection offers a giddy abundance of holiday cheer. --Matthew Cooke

A Pleasant and Subtle Update on Christmas Classics.......2007-01-11
If you're in the mood for Christmas classics and a little adventurous, you'll enjoy the manner in which the old favorites have been overlaid with some contemporary yet accessible beats and harmonies.
Light enough to be unobtrusive background music for a party, yet interesting enough to listen to while driving.
THE COOLEST!.......2005-10-03
This cd is great. Definitely adds to any Xmas collection. I especially love songs #2 and #4. So cool and fun!
holiday classis re-duced!.......2005-07-03
classics reduced to annoying pseudo-disco/house tracks. i couldn't even bring myself to listen to the entire cd, it was so bad!
Gang singing is a lot more fun than you'll ever know.......2004-12-04
Someone had the bright idea to take a bunch of old Christmas records, and letting modern DJs remix them. Amazingly, it works. All of the remixes are at least somewhat interesting, and some of them are actually quite good. I know that putting modern beats on old songs sounds like a strange idea, but somehow they pulled it off. If you want to hear some old Christmas chestnuts with a new twist, this is the CD for you.
Best new holiday cd in a long time!.......2003-12-20
I had a hard time getting this locally because apparently every time my local store played it, it would sell out the stock! Got it on the net.....Best songs "Ive got my love to keep me warm",
Kay Starr and "Merry Christmas Baby", Charles Brown. The best way to explain this music, it that it makes you feel like you're been drinking even though you haven't.....that GOOD.

What A Mess.......2006-04-26
I bought this because their are some extended mixes that were not previously available, but this is an awful mess. It seems that they tried to add a hip-hop flavor to these songs, but what they did was mess up great songs. This is a good example of where DJ Mixers think they have more talent than the original artists. The mixes are boring, overblown, and very hard to listen to. Don't waste your money; go out to sites such as GEMM or MusicMatch and buy the original 12" of these songs.
Sacrilege.......2005-03-07
I don't know what the other reviewers were hearing/thinking/ingesting, but these remixes are an object lesson in late 90s sacrilege. The originals are mashed and distorted with little sense nor respect for their flow. In every instance these remixes sound worse (and are less danceable) than the originals, which surely defeats the purpose of a compilation such as this. I was sucked in by the fancy packaging of the limited edition 3 disc set, but even that was littered with duds; the only exception being the straightforward Joey Negro mix of Thinking Of You, but even that is marred by a very poor vinyl transfer. And some of the tracks are simply not "classic disco" by any known definition of the term: what is Sometimes by Max Q? Yes's Owner of a Lonely Heart, anyone? And what the remixers have done with productions by Chic (esp. Sister Sledge) is mind-bogglingly bad. Avoid avoid avoid!
Remix Heaven for us Disco Dinosaurs!.......1999-05-28
If you are a DJ - just getting started or a veteran of the clubs - this is a must have. Remixes may be an aquired taste for the average listener, but a DJ has to have these in his/her collection to move a crowd. Play these in your car on the way to the club and you'll be pumped. I hope the folks at Rhino keep the faith. This is one superb collcetion.
mostly excellent remixes.......1998-08-17
Remixes are like postmodern opera productions; they assume you already know the song in question, and in detail. If you do have these songs engraved on your memory -- and you should -- most of the remixes are excellent. Just check out what Masters at Work do with "Funky sensation" using selective samples, without wrecking the groove or throwing away the tune. Both versions of the Rogers-Edwards groove from "Good times" omit the most famous bassline in hiphop, just to throw it in your face. There are some problems though: Most of the tunes are sped up: no one seems to have thought of using an old, slow groove as foundation for a drum&bass extravaganza. And who thought of throwing in the moldy Yes tune "Owner of a lonely heart"? But well worth the money.

love it.......2007-06-15
I don't get into the traditional stuff, have a few electronica holiday CD's. This is one of the best, in my opinion.
Calling All Electronica Music Lovers!.......2006-11-12
This CD is a must have for any electronica music lovers Christmas collection. I've had it for a couple of years now and it truly is a favorite. I've listened to it many, many times over and it never goes unnoticed at any holiday gathering. This is yet another CD from Basiclux Recordings I simply love.
Hope the holidays were great for everybody!.......2006-01-06
Just wanted to say thank you for the support of Holiday Remixed from BasicLux. It was an interesting project, for sure. (Nothing like writing Christmas carols in July, right?!) I appreciate all the ears put to this CD and look forward to sharing more music with the BasicLux label and the world. Peace!

Hot Holiday Grooves for Cool Days.......2005-11-29
I've truly tested all of these "reworked" Christmas classics CD's. You may have noticed several record labels putting out their own version and Holiday Remixed is without question the best of the bunch. Others include The Reindeer Room and Christmas Remixed, but they simply aren't as enjoyable as this one. There's a fine line between too Christmas-y and not Christmas-y enough. And in other cases you can sometimes barely distinguish a holiday tune, but not with this CD. Here that fine line is well observed. Just check out the samples provided by Amazon for yourself and you can get a small idea.
THIS CD IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED IF YOU'RE LOOKING FOR COOL AND HIP HOLIDAY FUN. THAT'S HOW I WOULD DESCRIBE THIS CD: HIP, COOL AND FUN.
Finally... Cool Christmas Music Has Arrived!.......2004-12-24
I took a chance when purchasing this CD as I'm not a big fan of Christmas music but I loved the cover so I thought why not? Besides I was planning a party and was really in need of something fresh. I was so excited by my purchase that I wanted to recommend it to anyone looking for Christmas music or not.
The songs are fun and have a great groove. Some of the tracks are remakes while others are original which I find pleasant as I tire of the same Christmas tunes over and over. And then a couple of the tracks just have a wintery feel so you aren't overburdened with too much Christmas music - for those as sensitive to it as me. The CD is diverse just enough that it's full of surprises, but pleasantly.
Two favorites for me are Winter Wonderland and Drummerboy. I strongly suggest you pick up this CD. You won't be disappointed!!
