Product Description
"Jazz? Well you can call it that but this jazz contains a new format!" So said Stetsosonic on the hip-hop classic "Talkin' All That Jazz" back in 1988 and that line says a lot about the direction of the Rebirth of Cool series. Alhtough Jazz is one of the genres featured in "Rebirth" it isn't a Jazz album. Instead "Rebirth" is an auditory bridge connecting the diverse sounds that make up todays pallete of modern urban music. Broken Beats, Drum & Bass and Downbeat lie alongside Deep House, Soul and Hip Hop of the highest order. "Rebirth" is about crossing the lines that divide genres without losing the roots that give the music its soul. A "must have" amalgamation!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A good intro to the world of hybrid soul/jazz music.......2000-07-28

The rebirth of cool collection is a series of albums that include music that is not easily defined in one musical category. The music on rebirt of cool is what I'd like to call hybrid soul/jazz music, vol. 1 in this collection of tracks is a wonderful good to ,music that can't easily be boxed into one particular category. The Rebirth start off with Chameleon by the Jazz warriors, a lush, vibrant take on the Herbie Hancock classic. This version sounds quite different from the original.

Another song that is a favoriteon this album is the revival by Martine Girault. It's a classic club type of song with some serious vocals. My third favorite track is the innercity boundaries by the freestyle fellowship featuring daddy-o .(stetsasonic) Inner city boundaries sounds like someone reading slam poetry over a smooth jazz track. These tracks are very hard to define, because they really don't fit into any particular music category, hence the term hybrid soul/jazz. The other tracks are equally just as good as the ones i mentioned. If you are interested in music that isn't easily categorized pick up the rebirth of cool collection. On the whole

5 out of 5 stars Grrrrrrreat!.......1999-02-25

I love this CD! Since my friend Kim turned me on to this CD series, I can't get enough. From the moment I bought #1, it quickly became one of my favorites. From there, I bought #2 and am on my way to acquiring the whole lot. I have Ronny Jordan's "Light to Dark," another favorite, if you don't have it, and you like your jazz funky, GET IT. The Rebirth of Cool series will round out any acid jazz collection nicely. If you like gettin' into a groove, than this is for you. This music is a voyage. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars I sincere comment about Opaz work..........1998-07-03

I've been trying to follow Opazr work since 1st Rebirth of Cool, and I get very frustated when I don't find anything new from them. You've got to play it again...Sam ! By the way, the quality of the "sample" doesn't sound a bit what you are - do something to sound it better; more people will buy it. Good Luck and God Bless you all. I'm Brazilian and I just love your work - you've got to come to Brazil and feel our rhythm. It will enrich your song. Bye !!! Take care...

This cd is so great to chill out to ... set the mood... anything really ,you can clean the house as well as party to it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Artists, Post-party chill.......2003-07-02

A very scrumptious little mix. The song selection is excellent and has Tricky, Portishead and Kruder & Dorfmeister as well as some lesser known artist. All the songs are GREAT. There's even a very smooth french rap that melts me like butter. mm-mm. This album is perfect to play at the beginning of a party to kind of ease into things, or is perfect as a kind of post-bash chill-out. An excellent grab.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Acid Jazz Volumes yet!.......2005-12-17

If you are into this kind of sound this is your ultimate collection piece! Rayford Griffin polished this one with some of the finest musicians around. The sound is infused with bits of fusion, dedicated funk and coupled with melodic brushes of harmony and spicy jazz rhythms. The point is this cd is Acid Jazz at it's best. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Great acid jazz / downtempo collection.......2001-07-03

Awesome. This compilation includes wildly divergent styles - jazz, downtempo, breakbeat, hip-hop, drum and bass, etc. The result is always seamless, and eclectic rather than jumbled. Standouts are "To Forgive But Not To Forget," with it's mournful violin, and "Migration," which runs along with a skittering tabla beat. L.T.J. Bukem and Jungle Brothers also lend a hand to this 4th of an incredible collection. Cool, hip, club-oriented jazz perfect for chilling out or driving to. Check out the first three in the collection if you like the jazzier, more laid back elements of this album.

3 out of 5 stars The Rebirth Of Cool Volume 4.......2001-04-21

This series is one of the more "boutique" ,selective compilations I have heard - I like most of the tracks as opposed other compilations where there are 1-3 stand out tracks and the rest are fillers. I still find it a little on the "generic side" for it to become an absolute favourite and I have given it a lesser rating than the predicted rating, based on this.

5 out of 5 stars The rebirth keeps getting better. My Favorite.......2000-07-28

Most of the music from the rebirth series have been jazz based, (so to speak) vol. 4 is decidedly club based. Many of the songs on this CD have a very club/trance like sound. But the music is exceptional. From begingin to end the tracks on this CD are all excellentListening to this Cd made me seek out the music by the individual arts. The sultry Underwater love starts vol. 4 off on a strong note. The music actually makes you feel as though you are under water. Another track that really stands out is the magnificent To Forgive or Forget. I never heard a violin used in club music. Cottonwol is another absolutely splendid track with its' distorted vocals and space age sound effects. Other strong cuts are Migration, Ponteio, who could it be now and my personal favorite Bittersweet. Well worth it for the adventerous listener.

5 out of 5 stars Truely an Anytime Album.......2000-01-21

This is a great album. Underwater Love is brilliant and really stands out. Just about every track is amazing and the Rebirth of Cool series is a well made purchase for those who like Portishead, Tricky, Headhunters and other similar bands. Its jazzy, fresh, and cool.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Buy!!!! .......2004-10-23

Whether you love straight ahead blue note jazz or contempary fusion with funk. This CD is off the preverbal chain...a must have if you love jazz/music. Rayford has done Jean-Luc Ponty, George Duke, Bradford Marsalis, Stanely Clarke, Lenny White, very proud!! I have over 2,500 Cd's and this is already one of my all-time favorites. BUY IT, DOWNLOAD IT...JUST GET IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome In Every Way.......2004-03-25

I knew Rayford was a fine drummer but the totality of fine production, incredible players and tasteful writing makes this CD move to the top spot in my collection. On the first note of the first song he catches the "essence" of Cool and never lets go. This is an album for all serious listeners that just happens to have a wonderful drummer on it. When Rayford does cut loose a little here and there it is extremely tasteful and his Tama Starclassic Maple Drums sound beautiful and huge. I reiterate that this is not just another drummer's album. It is an album for any serious listener. I can not recommend it strongly enough.

1 out of 5 stars Rayford is the man.......2004-03-13

Rayford has to be one of the best drummers touring today. If you get a chance to see him perform it will be memorable. This cd is well put together and does not have a bad song on it. I hope he puts out another one soon.

5 out of 5 stars Pick this one up for sure.......2004-01-26

THIS IS THE FIRST SOLO RELEASE OF RAYFORD GRIFFIN WHO IS A VERY
TALENTED DRUMMER.I SAW HIM MANY YEARS AGO PLAYING ON TOUR WITH JEAN LUC PONTY AND HE WAS GREAT.HE HAS HIT A HOME RUN WITH THIS CD AND I HOPE IT LEADS TO ANOTHER RELEASE.THE PRODUCTION VALUES ARE VERY HIGH AND THE MUSIC GOES FROM THE VERY SMOOTH TITLE TRACK TO SOME VERY HIGH ENERGY FUSION TUNES.I HAVE ALMOST WORN THIS OUT AND I HAVE ONLY HAD IT A MONTH.HE HAS SOME GREAT PLAYERS WITH HIM ON THIS ONE FROM STANLEY CLARKE,GEORGE DUKE,HIS BROTHER REGGIE AND DWIGHT SILLS.THE OTHER INTERESTING THING IS RAYFORD'S SINGING WHICH HE DOES WITH EQUAL APLOMB.THIS HAS NOT HIT THE MAINSTREAM BUT HE HAS HIS FINGER ON THE PULSE OF WHAT REALLY BELONGS THERE WITH THIS RECORDING.I URGE ALL THOSE WHO APPRECIATE QUALITY MUSIC TO PICK THIS UP AND PROMOTE A VERY TALENTED MUSICIAN.MY HAT'S OFF TO RAYFORD AND HIS FELLOW MUSICIANS.ENJOY THE JOURNEY.

5 out of 5 stars better than volume 1.......1999-09-03

Being a proud owner of the first four volumes in the "Rebirth..." series, I must say that this is my absolute favorite (of course without slighting the great music found on the other albums). Volume 2 starts out with the great song, "Crazy" by Outside which has an in your face drum beat and an infectious sing a long scat chourus; the album then moves on through such an eclectic mix of artists and genres with standouts by Ronny Jordan, Palmskin Productions, and DJ Krush. The song, "Aftermath " by Tricky may be one of his finest songs (it's the kind of song that may be a little too obscure for radio formatting, but it is still very listenable and not as weird as some of his later stuff). As with all good acid jazz compilations, this cd shows why the music is so hard to categorize since it weaves in and out of the realms of bebop, hip hop, world, dance, and free jazz , but don't let that scare you away from this cd; if you are a true music fan and are open enough to try new stuff , there really is something for everybody on this album- 5 stars aren't enough!

5 out of 5 stars buy this!.......1999-02-17

one of the more refreshing compilations on acid jazz today. Patrick Forge who produced this rocks. if you never heard mondo grosso before get this album because most of their albums are too hard to get in america. also I have to say I listened to the batu track like 5 times in a row. this album is dope

It is incredible that nobody rated or typed a review for this wonderful cd. It's a pictoresque fusion beetween the magical years of the jazz and the new sonorities of the cool. I have to mention the first and third track of the cd. You can dance with this cd or you can read a book....you can do whatever you want. Please, enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Get it for the first track at least..........2000-02-01

I'm serious. Abstract Truth did quite a remix for "get another plan". Superb sounds...music that pushes you farther. Put this track in, get on the highway, and floor it! You won't be dissapointed.

I'm serious. Abstract Truth did quite a remix for "get another plan". Superb sounds...music that pushes you farther. Put this track in, get on the highway, and floor it! You won't be dissapointed. As far as the other go....well, frankly, it's a shame really you start out such a good cd and then blow it on the rest of the tracks. They just didn't hit it for me. Too repetitive, nothing new, not very dancable, some cases just annoying....it wasn't worth it. But hey, go to amazon uk or de and see if you can listen to the whole cd and decide for yourself.

4 out of 5 stars The seventh and biggest effort, but not entirely the best.......1998-07-25

In the seventh installment of the groundbreaking compilation album from Island Records, Patrick Forge and Trevor Wyatt has once again brought together some of the best artistes from the avant-garde music scene and put them in one handy briefcase of both danceable and relaxing songs. Starts of with `Get Another Plan' by Abstract Truth with lush horns and sultry vocals but it shifts gears immediately and jumps into Ian O'Brien's `Monkey Jazz', some sort of a thinking man's dance tune. Throughout the compilation, we see the likes of jazz, drum`n'bass , house, techno and garage. However, the 2-CD effort was a bit too much for my liking when they could've made things juicier by compacting the cream of the crop into one CD. Nevertheless, with saving graces like Roni Size's `Ballet Dance' and `African Elation' by Dean Fraser, Rebirth Of Cool 7 gets all the accolades it deserves.
