moody and progressive lyrical gem.......2007-02-22

What sets this band apart from other great bands of the Seacoast New Hampshire/Maine jam band renaissance of the mid `90s (Groovechild, Percy Hill, Kristin Mueller Trio) is the quality of the lyrics. Like these other great innovators, you can't really file them into a single bin in the record store (Ska? Grunge? Even jazz and hip-hop at times?). In between the hard-edged angst of their first widely available record (Long Division) and the major label deal that cast a slick gloss on their productions (Viva Nueva), this is the best of the bunch.

Beginning with the self-referential and internally rhyming "Feast or Famine" ("i had a chance but i missed though/can i write the hits though?/the kind they play on the radio stations/patience is a virtue if the agents haven't/heard you, preferred you"), this carries us through Dave Gutter's desperate romanticism ("If we whisper real softly they can't hear a word that we say/The feeling I get is everyone's passion is dead/and the dreams that we had were replaced by demons instead/they listened real close and they heard every word that we said/I tip the rim of my hat, I cross fingers behind my back that it's not all grim as that"). Some other songs are presumably less self-referential and more universal, though the subject material can be pretty heavy in Girl Germs ("thirty minutes sweet for a lifetime sour") and The Heist ("For once in my life can I do this one thing right?"). This moody and progressive album will soothe you and rile you up, even within the span of a single song.

Awesome awesome awesome.......2004-05-09

This is a really great album that I would recommend to anyone. If you are a lover of ska, funk, rock, whatever... these guys have got it. They really blend a wide range of instruments and great vocals into an awesome sound. I can't really classify which of their albums is my favorite because they're all really great, but if I had to it would most likely be this one! It really demonstrates the wide range of their talent, groove and is just plain fun. I've had the album for years and never get tired of it, and it is always a great pick me up. If you like this, I'd definitely reccommend Viva Nueva and Long Division. Great stuff.
It's a shame they broke up because they really had a good thing going, but keep listening and enjoying. The band may have gone but their music is still around. !!

Wow...about the only thing that beats listening to this CD is seeing Rustic Overtones in concert. 02/23/01 at the UMass Amherst Skybox was amazing. But this CD does everything but capture the live experience. With great guitars, killer horns and a crazy organ, Gutter, Spencer, Tony and the rest are always giving the latest pop bands a lesson or two in style and beat. IF YOU DON'T HAVE THIS CD, BUY IT NOW. FUNKY ROCK-N-ROLL.......2001-03-28

If you like old Red Hot Chili Peppers, James Brown, Sly and the Family Stone, Mighty Mighty Bosstones,the Roots, Phish or just straight ahead rock and roll this album is for you. This band consists of a singer/guitarist, bass, drums, keys, and a three piece horn section (as of now they are only 2 since the 'bone player left last year). The sound is organic but always funky and usually loud. The lead singer Dave Gutter frequently channels the spirit of James Brown and Henry Rollins at the same time which creates a soulful intensity unmatched by any singer to ever stand in front of a microphone. Check this album out and pick up their next album when it hits stores in June, you won't be disapointed.

I have had this CD for almost 10 years now and have never ceased loving it.

The music is simply beautiful, in the mold of German 19th C romanticism. The Rustic Wedding Symphony is simply great. The first movement in particular, whose main theme clearly is a bit
of a take of of the Beethoven 9 Joy theme, has so many beautiful variations with very imaginative differences.

I love the opening "In the Spring" piece too; there is so much freshness and the orchestration is just right.

Excellently played and recorded too.

LANDMARK GOLDMARK.......2000-12-12

If Karl Goldmark (1830-1915) wrote nothing else, his "Rustic Wedding Symphony," Op. 26, would "mark" a place for him in the musical cosmos--- and not merely a footnote, either.

The "Rustic Wedding" is really not a symphony at all, but more a symphonic "suite" comprised of five inventive, melodious and charming programmatic movements. From the opening "Hochzeitsmarsch" (Wedding March), variations of delight and beauty that weave their lyrical material in the most playful and haunting invention, through the nostalgic "Intermezzo" (Brautlied, or, Bridal Song) and the quirky "Serenade," to the utterly disarming and wistful "Andante" (In the Garden), Goldmark's "Rustic Wedding" is every minute a masterpiece of tuneful inspiration.

The overtures, on the other hand, although pleasant enough "fillers," are relatively facile endeavors--- imminently forgettable.

Gunzenhauser approaches Goldmark with a fine romantic sweep, and the NSOI keep attuned perfectly. The overall sound is good, if not as full or detailed as one may wish. However, this budget release is still a solid way to obtain Goldmark's vision at a nominal monetary outlay.

Great showcase of handbell music.......1999-06-02

If you think handbells can only play Christmas music, think again.

This CD has such a variety of material that both the newcomer to handbells and experienced ringers will enjoy it. It also will intrigue any classical music lover. Some selections are arrangements for handbells, and some are original works for handbells. Familiar works take on a fresh new face when played on handbells, and the original works showcase the unique tonal qualities of the bells. It's amazing to think that only a handful of people are juggling 55 or so bells to make the music happen. It's also remarkable the range of color and voice that can come from what is essentially one large instrument.

I highly recommend this recording for any listener.

A ground-breaking handbell recording.......1999-02-25

Maybe the first handbell recording to combine exquisite sonic fidelity, incredible repertoire, solid technical playing, and amazing unity of ensemble. If you've only heard Segovia, Bream, or Williams play "Leyenda," you're in for a treat! The overall program is varied, featuring spirituals and folksongs; highlights are the haunting "Nocturne," two final two scenes from Copland's "Rodeo," and of course "Leyenda." The readings on this disc give justification to the rising wave of handbell ringing sweeping the country.

I am a very hearty Percy Grainger fan, but I am very dissappointed with the quality of the pieces on this CD. While the strings and Phillip Martin on the piano seem to carry their weight fairly well (the recording of Mock Morris is very nice), the wind players leave much to be desired. Balance and stylistic problems plague this CD. The first trumpet plays decent but can't time his breaths worth anything and the low woodwinds and brass put out a pitiful amount of sound. The flute's interpretation in "Blithe Bells" is stylistically terrible. There is also a horrible electronically synthesized solo in "Green Bushes" (Imitating Bassoon maybe???) which completely destroys that piece. Overall I'm very unhappy with this CD. If you're looking for Grainger, purchase the Chandos Grainger Edition CD's with the Royal Northern College of Music Wind Ensemble. Those CD's are vastly superior to this poor attempt at Grainger.

Aside from the ever-popular "Musical Snuffbox," recordings of the piano music of Lyadov are rather rare. I sought this recording out specifically because I wanted a recording of the "Ballade: From Olden Times," which I am attempting to transcribe for performance on the carillon. I knew the piece already from recordings of orchestrated versions. Some of the pieces on this recording are hard indeed to find, and the principal value of this recording is the repertoire itself. The playing is capable enough, though the recorded sound is, to my ear, a bit clunky. How much is due to the piano involved and how much is due to the technical matters of the recording itself I couldn't say, but the sound didn't have the brightness or resonance of the other Lyadov piano recording Amazon carries (Hyperion label). Regarding the performance of the Ballade itself, I personally didn't care for the performer's decision to play the "central" theme (in 5/4 time, over descending scale figures in the bass) in a free, virtuosic manner. To me, that puts too much emphasis on the scale figuration, detracting from the actual melody above. There is enough playfulness built into the 5/4 time that I think that section would benefit from a more straightforward rendition. Elsewhere, the performer's interpretive sensitivity works well.

If you're looking for a sonically sumptuous recording of Lyadov's music, this isn't it. Buy the Hyperion recording instead. If you are looking for a recording of a particular piece that you can't find elsewhere, that's a good enough reason to buy it. Lyadov's music doesn't usually stand out as having a unique (flavor) setting it apart from the work of other late romantic composers, though some of his music is intended to represent stories from Russian folklore. It is attractive music, though, and it stands up to comparison with many of the compositions of Chopin, Brahms, and others of the period.

Puff Daddy hits it big and RO tanks?.......2003-12-01

There is something so very wrong with the world when Weird Al Yankovic and Puff Daddy (on much the same level of musical talent) make millions and more in the music industry and a talented band like RO gets nothing. I am a huge fan of these guys and probably saw 30+ shows over a period of 4-5 years and I'm deeply saddened that they broke up. They have such an original sound, an odd fusion of funk/ska/rap/rock you name it, they're so good it makes my teeth sweat. Sadly, this means nothing in the cookie cutter world of modern music, it's a matter of who can scream the loudest (though Dave Gutter could shriek...) or who's the skankiest of them all (hello Spears and Aguilera!), not a matter of actual talent. Our music is lowest common denominator, what will hypnotize the largest amount of people into buying...bleh. Love Underground, Girl Germs, Iron Boots, Long Division, the list could go on. The band had incredible range, a lead singer with some serious mojo and a great presence.

Best of luck to the guys in RO from the kid in the Yankee hat at every show on the east coast. Cheers.

A Must Have.......2003-02-12

I've been listening to RO for about four years now and have yet to hear a band to rival their sound. Viva Nueva will stand as their going away album as the band broke up at the end of 2002, they will be missed. This album offers listeners a look at the growth Rustic has undergone in their eight years together. "C'Mon" remains their first major label single and MTV video but the driving beat of "Combustable" holds a place as my favorite song on the album and one of my favorite RO songs in general. If you can track them down, check out some of Rustic's earlier stuff or catch a show by the two new bands formed by former members, Paranoid Social Club and Roctopus. To sum up, get this album, get other Rustic Overtones albums and zone out to great music.

Viva Rustic!

When I first heard "C'Mon" on WEQX in Vermont, I remember thinking, "Wow, these guys are good, I should get this". I did and if you do too, you won't be disappointed! The reason I'm writing this review at 12:30am instead of going to bed is because this is a truly unique, musically versatile CD. It delivers enough great songs to be a `best of' collection, unlike the normal 3 good songs that should have waited for a few more before the CD was made. Go ahead. Add it to the cart now so I can go to bed...

Talented Beyond Belief!!!.......2002-06-01

Rustic Overtones...what can I say. Their CD viva nueva is possibly the greatest disc i've ever purchased. If you are one of those people who loves unique music, you will adore these guys. The lead singers voice is unlike any I've ever heard...literally, its as strange a voice as they come.

Rustic Overtones is heavy on the bass (fun to crank in the car, subs ablaze) loud on the horns, rythmic in the beat, and massively sweet on the ears.

My only regret is that they will probably never get popular on the west coast, and I'm going to have to drive from Washington to the East Coast to see them play. When I get the money, it'll be SO WORTH IT to see them play live. Meanwhile, I'll keep listening to their cd's, spreading the news, and PRAYING that they come my way!!!

Old School Ska Meets 21st Century Rock.......2001-11-16

This is a great album! Never before has a band ben so mislabeled by their name than Rustic Overtones. These guys have a totally urban sound with a horn section that will blow you away. "C'mon" is one of the best opening tracks in recent memory and the rest of the album lives up to its high standards. The nice, change-of-pace track "Baby Blue" is a sentimental favorite and the chilling "Sector Z" (w/Bowie on backing vocals) is another standout. I've not seen RO live but have heard nothing but rave reviews on their shows.
Quite simply, the best album in the rock genre I've heard all year.
