5 out of 5 stars Great sound and great song!.......2007-05-19

I loved the song "A New Day" after hearing it on the radio. I tracked it down and ordered the CD. All the songs are terrific.

5 out of 5 stars Along with the Good Vibrations are my favorites.......2007-05-15

Own it! It's all worth it!
"You are the new day" is my personal favorite song.

4 out of 5 stars My dad loves it.......2007-02-13

If he likes it then I am happy. Not my cup of tea. I like the idea that there where some Beatles tunes. Dad is 57 I am 36 might be the difference in age. NOt sure. Just not my cup of tea

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2006-04-22

I was very amazed when I first heard this album. Their sound is like no other. They are so unique that you can't compare them to other acapella groups.

I can say that their sound is better than a mixed choir because even though the King's Singers is only composed of 6 members. Their sound volume can beat a 30 member choir due to the quality of their voice.

My favorite is "It Was Almost Like A Song" because of the countertenor's very light voice. The baritone part was also awesome as he dominated the scene when he took the melody.

Overall, great album. This has to be one of the King's Singers best albums released. All songs are great that you can't resist missing a moment on listening it.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful singing; clever arrangements.......2002-06-14

I have been a fan of The King's Singers since their debut recording thirty years ago. New Day is one of my favourite albums. It has the terrific optimistic song "New Day," but many other wonderful tracks.

"Can't Buy Me Love" is sung as if it had been written by one of the Renaissance madrigal writers when he was in a very good mood. There are other up tempo tracks like this one, including Abba's "Money, Money, Money" and "The Rhythm of Life," but the CD also includes some romantic, lush singing in songs such as "Three Times A Lady," "The Summer Knows" and "It Was Almost Like A Song."

The clever arrangement of Barry Manilow's "Could It Be Magic?" begins with an extract from a sombre Chopin Prelude in C minor.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

Iceland may be the land of volcanoes, wondrous vistas, and Bjork, but Henrik Bjornsson and his bandmates in Singapore Sling have taken their musical inspirations from horizons as far a field as Dick Dale, the Velvet Underground, and Jesus & Mary Chain. Powered by a triple-guitar assault that easily lives up to its droning, metallic potential, the Sling's ominous sonic assault can just as quickly morph into subtler shades of grey. "Feedback-drenched" does not usually connote a sense of adventurous variety, but that's just the trick Bjornsson and company turn here time and again. Loosing the Lynch/Tarantino-ready opening salvo of "Overdriver," they periodically return to its-'50s-bad-boy-meets-surf-guitar-in-hell on "Listen" and the highway-ready instrumental "Roadkill." Elsewhere they tip their hat to Transformer-era Lou Reed on the sunny "Summer Garden" and turn the Standells' garage classic "Dirty Water" into marauding fuzz-fest. And while their influences may be readily deconstructed, the resulting haze of sonic somnambulism on this promising debut is shrouded in considerably more mystery. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars for the lysergically impaired & frequently volume despaired.............2007-07-03

think the best tracks from the first j.a.m.c. singles & the psychocandy lp (putting just like honey and some candy talking to the side for this consideration), spacemen 3 at their most fuzzed/drugged out, anything from loop's first 3 lp's or first 4 singles/eps, early telescopes (ala 7# disaster, the perfect needle, or precious little e.p.'s), the best buzzing from b.r.m.c.'s amps, &, then, use only as directed...HERE, THAT IS!!!...since this is available as an over-the-counter medication, place on stereo, turn volume to max, & press play.....if there's something else out there that's THIS drugged & psyched-out, totally drenched in fuzz & bathed in a 'could care less' attitude, PLEASE let me know what/who it is.....this release has received about 400+ plays here w/in the last 3 wks. and it's not likely to be shelved ANYTIME soon AT ALL!!!.....almost as good as 'venus in furs' or 'i heard her call my name' or 'the gift' by the v.u.!!!.....ok, u should have by now gotten the idea.....a pharmaceutical breakthru!!!

    3 out of 5 stars Not a curse, but Singapore Sling's blessing.......2004-10-04

It can only be speculated what chemicals these guys were on when Singapore Sling recorded this CD, but chances are it was probably the same stuff The Verve took during 'A Storm In Heaven' or Primal Scream popped during 'Screamadelica'. 'Curse Of Singapore Sling' is a whirlwind hallucinatory guitar ride, a vitriolic and mind-altering experience. Just think Jesus And Mary Chain meets Spacemen 3 or a more psychadelic The Raveonettes, all with a touch of fierce psychobilly swagger. Amongst other interesting substances, you can also smell the dust and gas-fumes trailing behind the Harley. You can smell the danger. 'Curse Of Singapore Sling' is great album by another overlooked Swedish band.

5 out of 5 stars The new Icelandic sound.......2004-04-21

This is a mysterious band from Reykjavik, Iceland. There dark origins cannot be traced to the Icelandic sagas. No they don't sound like Bjork or Sigur Ros. They sound more like Raveonettes and draw from the same beatnik sources. Henrik Bjornsson writes most of the tunes. His friends show up and drink a lot and make a lot of f***ing noise. That's the way Revolver was made. Singapore Sling have been together for about three years now. Recently they opened some shows for the intense Brian Jonestown Massacre. That makes sense because both bands have a love for feedback and psychedelia. Any song without a minute of feedback is a sellout really. All their songs are about f***ing, which is a valid statement. I want to get high with these guys. This is music to take drugs to. I must pull my pants down. Let the revolution begin!

4 out of 5 stars Good but needs to be retracked.......2003-10-18

I think the album tracks better in this order:

    1 Overdrive
    2 Nuthin' Ain't Bad
    3 Midnight
    4 No Soul Man
    5 Roadkill
6 Overdrive Demomix (not on album, from band's website)
    7 Listen
    8 Dirty Water
    9 Chantisissity
    10 Heart Of Chrome

The songs are good, but could flow together better to make a continuous sludge of sound instead of one heavy song followed by a slow song as the album is currently tracked. Summer Garden does not fit with the other songs and should have been left off the album. There seems to be a slight twangyness to some of the songs. The new B.R.M.C. is a much harder album, this sounds more like early The Jesus and Mary Chain meets country. Worth getting, though.

4 out of 5 stars Uneven, but who gives a f*#@.......2003-08-01

This is a maddening record! The highs are so high and the lows are so low, it drives me nuts!! "Summer Garden" and especially "Overdriver" are two of the GREATEST songs I've heard since, well honestly since Fountains of Wayne's new record "Welcome Interstate Managers," but BEFORE THAT since I don't remember when!

The rest of the record is an uneven collection not so good to down right waste of time songs. I give this record 4 stars on the strength of the first two songs.

The band, however, is a promising group. I look forward to hearing more from them. Sinapore Sling fit well with The Hives, The Strokes, The Wizards, White Stripe, etc. Rock and Roll is in good hands with these guys.

3 out of 5 stars Large collection for the price, but not perfect.......2006-07-30

As with these sorts of all-inclusive collections, there are issues to be had with 'National Anthems of the World' as performed by the Swarovski Orchestra. Primary--to me--is that these performances and arrangements come off as being rather sterile and bland, though it's perhaps not surprising since I doubt very much that most of the nationalities of the nations represented here have citizens actually in the Swarovski Orchestra. There's little of the passion that a national band or orchestra would have in playing their own nation's anthem, much like listening to a generic studio band play play a collection of college fight songs (and there ARE CDs of those out for sale as well).

That said, this 2-disc CD set does offer a wide spectrum of national anthems, though it does a far better job of covering European nations more so than any other region. For instance, Central America is poorly represented in this collection as is Africa which, aside from Cameroon, the heart of that continent is conspicuously ill-depicted. But the biggest omission is China; neither the mainland or Taiwanese anthems are included in this set. Considering that The People's Republic of China is the most populous nation on earth, as well as a global political and economic force to be reckoned with, even in 1996 (this CD set dates from 2004, but at least one online database list the contents from the mid-1990s), this is a glaring oversight in my opinion.

The final gripe deals with the included documentation. Each of these anthems DO have titles to them, none of which the producers of this collection ever bother to mention and provide. One has to go to Wikipedia or some other resource to look up the actual name of the anthems included here. This is information that is relatively cheap to research and out of courtesy to the consumer should've been provided for this set, especially since this collection has been around in some form for over a decade already.

For the money, it's a fairly good buy for those who want a collection of national anthems. But the producers could've done a better job of compiling the contents of this collection, and what music there is would've certainly benefitted from a bit more impassioned play.

5 out of 5 stars excellent selection & quality sound.......2005-08-27

Swarovski Orchestra did an excellent job in this compilation. I work in Foreign Service & I use this CD to play US anthem & the host country anthem during events. Unlike other compilations which shorten the pieces, this offers full-length pieces saving me from embarrassment.

Hallelujah! This is one damn fine album. Very fuzzy and pleasant to listen to.Velvety vocals, fuzzy guitar riffs, steady beats, can't go wrong! "Life is killing my rock'n roll" is catchy and clever. If you are/were a Jesus and Mary Chain fan you will dig this...a soundscape of subtleties guaranteed to please the experienced ear.

You can say youwere there first. This is a band that brings back a lot of memories. And due to a lot of drug abuse, there was much more forgotten good times. This band is creating a buzz. This is the second joint from the Sling. They have had a lot of experiences touring and playing in front of live audiences. They focus on their strengths this time: noise, power, and freedom. The album begins with a blast of feedback. For twelve tracks it is a hot ride. They bring everything to the plate that is good about music: from The Beatles to The Ramones. Let's forget everything else. This is the coolest band around. The lead singer looks like James Dean.

I was looking for some great examples of Evelyn Glennie's playing to show to my daughter who is learning percussion. I picked the Chinese one because I have a background in Japanese culture and love taiko drums, but this turned out to be a little bit too Chinese for me. There was nothing in it that my Western daughter could relate to. I'll have to try another Evelyn Glennie CD.

      Album Description

Singapore, mixed by Darren Emerson (Underworld), is the latest in the Global Underground series. This 2 CD set features tracks by Hatirus, DJ Sneak, Ramirez and more. This set is a reckless rollercoaster of wild house, dangerous dub and wide-boy techno.

      Album Details

Double disc collection of the vaunted UK DJ-producer / Underworld resident's set in GU Singapore. Includes cuts by Remote Control, Boy vs. Girl, Nitzer Ebb, Jori Hulkkonen, Laurent Garnier & more.

3 out of 5 stars Can Diversify Your Global Underground Collection.......2007-06-15

This is Darren Emerson's second effort for Global Underground. Released just over a year from his first. Despite being a welcomed change and addition to a series which is overly saturated with progressive trance albums, Global Undeground 020: Singapore does not escape the GU shortcoming of...one disc good, other disc, not so good.

Disc 1 falls into the not so good category. It is clearly evident that Emerson's past history with Underworld fuels the overall feel of this set. This might initially sound great if you are a big fan of Underworld (as I am), however the tracks featured do not come close to the quality, creativity or intensity of what Underworld has produced. Disc 1 is predominantly electro-tech tracks with way too much voice distortion. A couple of nice tracks that help to elevate my rating for this album are the opener, "Bruno" by Remote Control Egypt, "Purple" by Circulation, and "Pixels" by UBU (although this version is my least favorite of the dozen or so mixes and re-mixes out there).

Disc 2 get the honors for this album. This set has better track selection and flow a lot more smoothly that the choppy set of disc 1. You have to love it when a DJ mixes in a track like "Alegria" (track 11), and makes it work. Fun and out of no where!

      Disc 1 gets 2.5/stars and Disc 2, 4/5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars Most reviewers right on. Album is average by GU standards.......2005-03-28

This is an O.K. mix from a decent DJ. It's too "stacked" a market to give this CD any more than 4 stars.

If you are like me, then you read Amazon reviews to get a good idea of the product before you buy to save wasted money. In this case 3 stars will let you know exactly what caliber of Global Underground album you are getting.

It has pretty good song selection and very good mixing, but when compared to the likes of the Sashas, Digweeds, Deep Dishes, Kleinenbergs etc. there is no way you should be buying this album ahead of their GU offerings.

Take the 2nd disc for example. It is a good CD... after you get 35 minutes in. I should have known though since it took 3 minutes to hear one beat on the first track alone. If you can suffer through the first boring 30 minutes on CD2, then it really picks up, launching it into the REAL Global Underground quality realm for House CDs.

I look forward to hearing more from Darren Emerson as I feel his mixing is great and track selection pretty good. Since this album is old I would expect his more recent albums are much better.

4 out of 5 stars Full groove all the way.......2003-12-31

For people who want to buy a full groove album perfectly mix, here is one for you. For global underground it is kind of a new sound. The first CD is right on the groove. The is no introduction and you feel the beat right at the beginning. The second CD is much more funky and it is the pecfect mix before hitting the dance floor.

It is not cheasy house music like you use to listen on radio. Darren Emerson have a winning formula with that album. It his house music at is best .

      Bravo

4 out of 5 stars Whoa! Not your average dance mix!.......2003-04-22

Okay, now first off let me tell you guys that when it comes to electronic music I'm new to the game. I've been a hip-hopper for the past 5 years, but recently I've beeen swaying towards the electronic genre a tad bit. I actually brought this record accidentally because the bonehead salesman at the shop put it in the wrong case. I went home thinking I had brought a John Digweed cd until I popped it my deck and heard how funky and fast this mix was. Now with all that said....THIS CD IS ROCKIN'! After realizing that what I was hearing through my car cd deck was too uplifting and moving for the dark and murky (yet amazingly dope!) Digweed, I started nodding my head and mashing the accelerator to the floor. Seriously, this cd starts off with a crazy Latin sounding house song with vocals over it and then moves into some sweet jazzy, funky, straight-up, "no-nonsense" dance music! But Emerson doesn't stop there--the next journey on his trip is back to the 80's with a couple of electro-break-beat soundin' tracks that just scream "pop" and "lock". Tracks 14 and 15 fade you out with a nice soulful groove. If you're looking for some fun, up-beat dance music to get your party started and have people asking the same question--"Damn! Who is this ill soundin' cat?" then GU20 Darren Emerson is for you!

5 out of 5 stars worth it for just for the first disc.......2003-02-27

Upon acquiring this disc, i first listened to it at a very low volume @ work. Hearing just the drums (basically), it seemed to be a very 'driving' cd, and I knew that I was in for much more when I had some private time to really turn it up. From the opening swirls of accordian, it just builds and builds into a
hOUSe-like crescendo, so that you end up wherever it is that you want to be. I myself, would like to be at a club absorbing it at a very loud volume.
Now I find out that Darren was w/ Underworld (whom I also love) and I see that he has a history. If you are looking for Underworld, then you should just play your UW cd's. Darren has entered a different world here.
Coming from the world of the sf hOUSe scene, I cannot more highly recommend these discs. Disc 1 is much stronger than the second,
but the guy is only tryng to evolve in as many directions as possible. If you buy this album w/ hOUSe in mind, you will keep it next to your cd player for a few months, then you will file it, then you will look for it, and then you will keep it by your player indefinitely. Myself, I will be ordering his other discs, searching for something else that may be as good as this one. Whether you are driving, sitting at home, or at a club, this album makes you want to do whatever it takes you to get in the right frame of mind to spin it over and over again. Looking forward to peace in the future.

The new music from Bananarama and the music from Alcazar are both welcomed antidotes to the negativity of today. (and there's lots)----Break out those old disco shoes cuz' you're gonna need them!--------Radio Station Kraftdeco

2 out of 5 stars Should have been their Shining Moment in the new millennium.......2006-01-10

Of the three imports available on amazon, this is the version to get. It's the cheapest, and includes the most tracks, including 3 remixes of the first 2 singles.

As for the disc, I was anxious to hear an astounding modern yet retro dance disc from one of my favorite girl groups of the 80s. Unfortunately, instead of picking up on the latest influence of 80s music in dance music, what we get here is predominantly disco flavored tracks that sound painfully dated, with some Latin tones now and then. The only semi retro/electro tracks on here (and my favorites) are Feel For You, Love Bite, Your Love is Like a Drug, and Marc Almond's remix of Venus. The two lead singles "Move in My Direction" and "Look on the Floor" are not even the strongest tracks! And the remixes on their singles don't make them much better.

I appreciate the commercial direction the girls have taken, but you can still sound mainstream while being more sophisticated than this. Take a listen to the new Madonna or even the Kelly Osbourne(!) to hear some infectious melodies with an 80s flair that don't melt down into total cheese. Unfortunately, I just don't see US radio embracing any of the sounds on this disc.

But of course, fans of Bananarama should still add this one to their collection. It's listenable, if not up to today's standards.
