Add "new school breaks" to the ever elongating list of electronica subgenres; Beats Electronica UK is the primer. What's new? The scene emerging from London clubs with forerunners Barge Charge, Subphonic, Freq'Nasty, and Tsunami One--all spun on this disc by shining star DJ Dave Tipper. The school is hi-NRG '90s acid house flavored with cameos of retro scratching and Miami supersubsonic bass belched out at nearly visible decibels. The breaks return to graspable midtempo snare and high hat that only occasionally spatter a round or two of drum & bass for emphasis. The climax on this album occurs when track 5, Subphonic's "Buzzed," lurks and lurches with a sloshy melody suspended by a driving drum loop, then crescendos midway into wide-open phasers, old-school scratching, and subliminal vocal samples. Suddenly it collapses into track 6, Semi-Detached's "Bassline"--a frenzy of bombastic rhythm loops that just doesn't quit. You won't have to work to find the groove here. Listen to this recording sitting still, and you'll still sweat. --Beth Bessmer

don't let the title fool you!.......1999-03-18
I thought "Electronica" - well, okay, I'll give it a shot. I was TOTALLY surprised. This CD has some massive tracks onnit. I think it really edges towards some type of trance/breakz rather than big beat. It says that it's the emerging Big Beat sound of the UK, but this is nothing like FBS, Monkey Mafia, or Propellerheads (as you might expect).
There is some phenomenal scratching and some beatz that will kick you in yer butt and demand you dance!
Tipper, Subphonic, and Tsunami One (check out the title: No.43 With Steamed Rice!!!) are artists to be watching.

Now that big beat's moment is over and everyone knows that the Chemical Brothers and Fatboy Slim didn't save rock & roll but reinvented it as a crunchy electronic beat, what next? Listeners still clinging to that brief moment of bang-it-out glory can take heart in this compilation, featuring more than a few masters of meaty rolling beats and muscly bass lines with enough power to bench-press a whole frat house. Lo-Fidelity Allstars jump-start the joint, while Midfield General turn in a hip-hop jam. In general this comp's a slower affair than usual, with hip-hop figuring heavily, though Sparky Lightbourne gets all discoed out. Funky appearances from the Fat One and Space Raiders further fill out this collection from the quintessential Big Beat label, Skint, continuing the phat, phunky tradition. --Tricia Romano

Excellent!.......2000-05-27
This is a great mix of different styles. I picked it up because I have really enjoyed what I have heard from the Lo-Fidelity Allstars as well as Fatboy Slim. The track I think is one of the best on here is Sho Nuff from Fatboy Slim. He redid a 70s track I believe that is quite fun! I also enjoyed the liner notes that gave some background for every song on the compilation. A good listen!
Big Beats from Brassic...?.......2000-03-22
Big Beat music at it's best? Only some bigbeats rock this CD but only one can judge for him/her self-- However, I enjoyed this release due to the variety of techno displayed in this release. From breakbeats, to big beats, and back again, this album is filled with great artists and energy. So if you are one of those techno enthusiasts out there this is a definite buy.
Hasn't been out of my CD player since I bought it!.......2000-03-21
I read a review of this in CMJ, which rated this very highly, and I have to say that review was right on. This is an excellent sampler, with a wide variety of neat and different sounds. My favorites include the first three: 1. Puppy Phat Number One - Lo Fidelity Allstars; 2. Devil In Sports Casual - Midfield General; 3. Where You Goin', Chicken? - Sparky Lightbourne. Particularly that third one, with its weird "Where you going Chicken-Licken ..." vocal. Skint records has made it a point to pioneer less-known techno artists and unusual styles, and this album is a great showcase.
Here and there. . ........2000-03-11
I read about this CD in "Stuff" magazine, Maxim's little offshoot. . .and it said this CD was really dope, Fatboy Slim and other DJ's doing their stuff. I have to say, for a techno enthusiast, most of these songs are definitely cool - cutting edge in terms of music. Some of them are a little weird, I like dance music more than like. . .mellow techno. . .? But, overall, a good buy.
