Album Description
Dusty Springfield was the finest female vocalist of her era, a performer of remarkable emotional resonance whose body of work spans the decades and their attendant musical transformations with a consistency and purity unmatched by any of her contemporaries. This wonderful collection compiles her complete surviving BBC sessions onto one CD for the very first time. The first three tracks, by The Springfields, includes their first single `Dear John' alongside two follow up singles `Swahili Papa' and `Say I Won't Be There'. This session and the following solo session in 1964 have only recently surfaced at the BBC, having been considered `lost' for a number of years. The album racks up five Top 10 hits alongside a string of album tracks and b-sides but most excitingly includes 'To Love Somebody', a cover of the Bee Gees classic that was originally recorded in Atlanta for inclusion in the seminal Dusty In Memphis album however that version was destroyed in a fire. This track and 'Tossing and Turning', 'Up Tight (Everything's Alright)', 'We're Doing Fine', 'Good Loving' and 'Higher and Higher (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me)' only exist in the BBC's archives. 22 tracks. Mercury.

A Wonderful Gift to Starved Dusty Fans.......2007-06-17
Whenever any lost song by the great Dusty Springfield turns up, it's an event for her fans, but when an ENTIRE ALBUM of rare or previously unreleased material hits the marketplace, well, it's a cause for celebration. Okay, so the sound quality on some of these tracks isn't the best, and the performances by the backing musicians might be a bit muddy here and there, or the arrangements similarly cluttered, but none of this takes away from the superb vocal performances. Dusty didn't think of herself as one of the Great Ones, and she was a notorious perfectionist in the studio, but the songs included here show her to be a gifted live performer. There's a rawness and a spontaneity here that makes listening to this a real treat for those of us who mostly know the studio album versions of many of these tunes, and have heard them so many times we have memorized every second of every sound and syllable.
The first three tracks, by The Springfields, did not overwhelm this listener, and impatience began to set in almost immediately. Then, a rushed, almost frantic rendition of "La Bamba" (with poorly pronounced Spanish lyrics) threatened to sink expectations for a sublime Dusty experience. But what followed was a surprising, energetic Motown-styled version of "Tossin' And Turnin'," and these ears began to perk up. An emotionally bare and intimate reading of "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" set up the rest of the CD, and from there it never let up.
Two very different performances of "I Can't Hear You No More" are included here, and it's a toss-up as to which is better. On the first one, the band really gets it going, The Echoes do their backup vocals just like they do on the record, but Dusty's singing is just shy of breaking apart. It's a powerful moment. The second version is a tad slower and more laid back, and has less of a wall of sound behind the vocals. It's also more like the album version. In between, a perfunctory "Wishin' & Hopin'," never a particular favorite of mine, manages to gain some interest by having a slightly kickier beat than the original single, and after that a beautifully sung version of her hit song, "Losing You" keeps this collection on the beam. The bass and drums on this one almost make it better than the original recorded studio version, and the backup vocalists are perfection itself. Another song that doesn't add any new ground is "In The Middle Of Nowhere," but it's typically well done by Dusty, and then she follows it up with a fun performance of the Charley & Inez Foxx hit, "Mockingbird," which features one of the Echoes in place of the second Dusty heard on the album version.
The final ten songs bump this CD up to the stratosphere. "Little By Little" is crystal clear and, I think, much better than the hit single version, which always sounded to me like it was recorded in a bathtub. Soul classics never put to vinyl by Dusty, "Uptight (Everything's Alright)," "We're Doing Fine," "Good Lovin," and (Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher And Higher" are all given the typical, devoted Springfield treatment. She clearly loved doing this kind of music. Two of Dusty's best known hits also come in this final stretch, an impassioned "You Don't Have To Say You Love Me," and "Son Of A Preacher Man," which may not include the perfection of the Memphis musicians, but Dusty sings it even better here, if that's possible.
For me, there are two transcendent moments on this CD: "Chained To A Memory," which is sung with heartbreaking immediacy, and Robin Gibb's "To Love Somebody," which was recorded during the Memphis sessions but lost in an infamous Atlantic warehouse fire (that also robbed the world of many other great artists' master recordings). It's a truly wonderfu gift to starved Dusty fans everywhere, not only to have this song at last, warts and all, but to have each and every one of these recordings.
I'm sure I'll wish that I could get rid of the announcer's voice at the beginning of many of these tracks, after I've listened a few times, but on the other hand, this is pop music history, so I guess I really don't mind too much. The mono and sometimes mirky recording quality of this CD made me tempted to only give it four stars, but that would be unfair, since these imperfections were anticipated. The songs, and Dusty's one-of-a-kind voice are what make THE COMPLETE BBC SESSIONS so special.
LIVE DUSTY MAGIC.......2007-06-08
Having collected Dusty's records since the 60's, it's always great to have something different to add to your collection.
Most of Dusty's solo tracks on this cd were released exclusively through the Dusty Springfield Bulletin some years ago but on this new commercially released cd we had the addition of some of The Springfields hit rsongs and how well they sound LIVE!
All the tracks on the cd are from radio broadcasts and the quality is excellent, there are some of Dusty's huge hits like Son Of A Preacherman, Losing You, I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myselfg and her worldwide smash You Don't Have To Say You Love Me.
Tracks that Dusty never recorded in a studio such as Tossin' & Turnin' have a great early rawness that really adds to the performance, we also have The Bee Gees hits To Love Somebody - Dusty did record this but it was lost when there was either a fire or flood in the Atlanic studios.
Another point of interest is the inclusion of two different versions of I Can't Hear You (No More).
The Jackie Wilson hit (Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher & Higher is also another great performance from Dusty and the whole cd is such a welcome release.
Look out for the companion dvd to this set, it should be released late August so go ahead and treat yourelf to both!

Awesome !!!.......2006-08-14
I purchased this for a couple songs and I was suprised about how many I have forgotten about. This is a great selection of songs and collection. Get it if you like any of the Rare Earth songs...
Get Ready!.......2006-06-23
With very little of the Rare Earth catolog in print, Rare Earth "The Collection", is without question the single best compilation available from the first caucasion rock group to be signed to Motown records by Berry Gordy. Rare Earth if only for a short time, delivered the goods that sent them to the top of the charts. Their take on "Get Ready", became a monster hit, originally tracking in at 21 minutes, like many a AOR cut of the late 60's and early 70's, it was trimmed down to the usual 4 minutes for 45 single release. Although you get the edited version on this cd, "Get Ready" remains one of the greatest rock covers of a soul hit to date. In case you forgot, these guys also had a touch of soul as well, as seen in their 1972 hit "I Just Want To Celebrate", which blended rock, soul and psychedelia to perfection. They cover Dave Mason's "Feelin Alright", like every other band of the day, but again, awesome guitar work on this version makes it one of the best takes of this classic ever waxed. If Joe Cocker had not had a hit record with his cover of the song, I would be willing to bet that this Rare Earth cover would have received tons of airplay, making it a hit. "Tobacco Road", is another standout along with "Magic Key" and "I'm Losing You". Lead vocalist and drummer Pete Rivera had a macho texture to his voice that is instantly recognized by anyone who listened to AOR in the early seventies. This compilation offers a generous 18 tracks for an attractive price, making it one of the best buys of classic rock and soul.

the Dusty legacy.......2006-07-16
Yet another Dusty compilation - take your pick, there are so many but this is certainly one worth having. The remastering is generaly good and it's hard not to be reminded of the great sound quality Dusty was able to achieve on her records, especially in the early years when she was so actively involved on the production side of things. I want to pay particular tribute to Dusty's version of the Goffin/KIng song, "Goin' Back". The way that Dusty puts her peformance together is a master class in pop singing. As the orchestration of the song gains momentum, so too does Dusty's singing, but all within a carefully defined framework. No histrionics, this is not American idol type singing where the aim is to overwhelm or even destroy the song - when Dusty sang songs she really loved, she paid the ultimate tribute to the writers, telling the story. It is often said that Dusty was the greatest British female pop singer of all tme. I don't think this can be disputed - her musical inteligence was married with natural talent. She understood pop better than most of her contemporaries - male or female. Was she a better singer than Rod Stewart? Eric Bourdon? Other British male singers of reknown? Obviousy she was not as prolific as Rod Stewart and I don't think she ever would have tackled the great American songbook - her only efforts in that canon were not particularly impressive - but that may have been a production problem and unlike Stewart she recognised her strengths and by default her limitations (more signs of her inteligence). However at her best, her capacity to interpret a song, to turn it into a three minute masterpiece, emotive, restrained and exciting, puts her in a class of her own. Comparisons are futile since there was only ONE Dusty Springfield. Of course there are songs on this compilation which are not Dusty's greatest moments, she after all did cover some fairly ordinary songs, but I am always surprised at how there is something to discover, some little moment of clever singing, in even the least well written or poorly produced songs.
Excellent.......2005-09-09
All the great slow beautiful songs of Dusty are here! Only one or two out of the 40 some odd songs disrupt the trance of these beautiful songs!
Lovely 'Look'.......2004-10-31
Dusty Springfield was simply one of the greatest female interpretive singers, along with Judy Garland, Aretha Franklin, and Ella Fitzgerald.
This compilation of Dusty's best love songs features big hits ("You Don't Have To Say You Love Me", the title track) with lesser known releases ("Spooky", "Breakfast in Bed") and stunning interpretations (Barry Manilow's "Sandra" and Janis Ian's "In the Winter"). the live release of Dusty's version of Karla Bonoff's "Lose Again" is further proof that a Dusty Springfield live album is needed.
At 47 tracks, this is not only a fine career retrospective but an excellent sample of Dusty's talent.
A Fantastic Collection.......2004-04-15
This is a wonderful collection of ballads and love songs which goes beyond Dusty Springfield's hits to include many lesser-known gems. Although many of the songs on this album may be unfamiliar to American audiences, they are a revelation: Springfield's beautiful voice and emotional singing style are shown off to great advantage in the ballads which make up the majority of this album. Standout tracks include the Janis Ian-penned "In The Winter," which was not released until after Springfield's death, the pop standard "What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life," and "Let Me Love You Once Before You Go." Also included is a live version of the Karla Bonoff song "Lose Again," which was recorded at Springfield's final concert in the UK in 1979 and has never before been released on CD.
Buyers should note that the version of the hit "I Only Want To Be With You" on this album is not the familiar version, but is an alternate vocal and mix.
I highly recommend this album - buy it and discover the amazing talents of the underappreciated Dusty Springfield.

Customer Reviews:
Classic Dusty Springfield.......2007-06-08
This is a great 2-CD set of Dusty Springfield, from when she first began recording through her tragically short career. For Dusty Springfield fans, the sound is crisp and clean and the songs bring back many fond memories...what's not to enjoy??
Who Puts These Things Together?.......2005-10-20
While one can't argue with the price of this 2-CD set, one wonders why all these redundant compilations of Dusty's music are necessary? And, since most of them were released after her untimely death in 1999, there's a certain aroma of crass cashing in by serving what this writer calls the Necrophiliac Music Market. It seems every time a musician dies, their record sales skyrocket. It happened with Elvis, Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, et al. In other words, who's raking in this dough? Certainly not the late great artist. And, therein lies the tragic irony of Dusty Springfield. It would appear Dusty has had more albums released after her way too early demise than she ever did in life. This is but one of many postmortem compilations floating around.
While the song choices cover just about every phase of Dusty's 40-year career, including her early days with The Springfields, their chronology has been totally ignored. Why this album doesn't begin with the Springfields' tracks followed by Dusty's first solo hit "I Only Want To Be With You" defies logic. Why the first disc ends with the Kurt Weill-esque "Soft Core" and the second disc begins with the insipid, non-Dusty hit "Close To You" is but one example of the disjointed, herky-jerky musical progression of this album. With no prevailing theme and no natural segues, this album leaves the listener confused and unsatisfied.
This writer gave it 4 stars only because it's Dusty. However, if you're truly a Springfield aficionado, might I suggest you pay the extra money and purchase the brilliant 4-disc compilation, "Simply Dusty" - the nearly 100 track, well-thought-out, chronological remastered compilation of Dusty's finest work.
Dust was one of the 20th Century's most gifted vocalists/musicians. While this album will give the listener more than a glimpse of her incredible talent, the way this set is organized will not accord the new Dusty Springfield fan the opportunity to hear how Dusty grew and changed as an artist. "Simply Dusty" tells the whole story - this set is merely disjointed fragments of a fantastic talent's life's work.
Great 2CD set for Dusty fans and afficionados.......2005-03-06
"Classics and Collectibles" isn't simply yet another Dusty compilation cos it offers the original now-rarely-heard mono mixes of all except three of her British 60s singles and some genuine rarities that should appeal to fans and afficionados. Her biggest hits - inevitably the big ballads - are collected on the "Classics" CD. Her less well remembered hits - mostly uptempo numbers - are culled to accompany the rarities on the "Collectibles" CD.
If I had to pick one song from the "Classics" CD that truly stands out, it's the mono mix of "Goin' Back" - it's a thrilling experience listening to it because this long forgotten singles mix is aurally so different from the conventional stereo mix we have come to know and love.
The "Collectibles" CD is for afficionados where the goodies are at. Rarities to set the hearts of fans aflutter include "They Long To Be Close To You" with its Bacharach-styled musical intro restored, "The Corrupt Ones" preceded by a sequence of atmospheric studio chatter, an unedited "Heartbeat", alternative vocal takes of "Nothing" and "If Wishes Could Be Kisses", "Standing In The Need Of Love" (possibly the first song Dusty ever recorded as a solo artiste in late 1963), the original soundtrack version of "Sweet Ride" in terrific stereo, the rare singles mix of "Little By Little" (with distinctive backing vocals that go "ooh ooh" mysteriously excised from the stereo mix) and a much stronger stereo mix of "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" featuring alternative vocals from Dusty and audible background singers to close the CD. For completists, there's also the rare but much maligned "Sometimes Like Butterflies".
To cap it all, Universal used a rare but beautiful shot of Dusty (circa 64/65) indulging her musical tastes in her Baker Street flat. For once, the record company is making an effort with the packaging.
A great product. Highly recommended.
Awesome Gems!.......2004-12-14
What a fabulous collection this is! Now, though I am not happy that they released some of her rare classics in mono mixes, I am still - however - glad that they put some huge rarities on here.
Awhile back, I ran across her 'Stay Awhile/I Only Want to...," CD, and found the unreleased song 'Standing in the Need of Love' just wonderful. Too bad it wasn't released years back when it was recorded. The other thing I like are the never-before-released stuff: The full-edit of '(They Long To Be) Close To You,' the stereo soundtrack version of 'Sweet Ride,' a previously unreleased song, 'I Have Found My Way Through the Darkness,' an alternate vocal take of 'I Am Your Child,' the single mix of Dusty's 1978 comeback song, 'I'm Coming Home Again,' another unreleased song, 'Sweet Inspiration,' an unreleased edit of 'The Corrupt Ones,' and, uh, at long last... the unreleased stereo version of Dusty's timeless hit, 'I Just Don't Know What To Do with Myself.' I am so glad that this is finally being issued; at last!
Get this CD, folks! I promise you... you won't be disappointed.

Big Music comes in Small Packages........2007-01-09
Are you ready for one of the most wonderful collection of soulful music ever..Let me say quite frankly that this is music that satisfies the soul however there is a catch, you must have a soul. Disregard any negative reviews from people who obviously don't have any real soul.
Fans can never be objective..........2006-05-06
From the OBJECTIVE reviewer..."Shine on Through" is the one decent song, but Elton and pop disco don't work well together.
Elton shows serious soul..........2004-11-05
Jimmy Wade's review was right on - this one is a hidden gem from Elton. Of the tracks on the EP, only "Mama Can't Buy You Love" went in the Top 40 at the time, though recently the reissued "Are You Ready For Love?" topped the charts in the US and England. What's most interesting about the disc is the range of material. As Jimmy notes, it's not really a "disco" album - just pure, good Philly Soul, most of the tracks done w/ the Spinners (I think they play on all the tracks, though they don't sing on all of them) and all produced by Thom Bell. The mixes of the songs originally included on the vinyl 3 song EP in 1979 are (as Jimmy points out) NOT the Elton John/Clive Franks mixes, but the original Bell mixes. The complete EJ/Clive Franks mixes can, however, be found as addl. tracks on the CD single for "The Last Song", and "Are You Ready For Love?" and "Three Way Love Affair" are on the recent single edition of "Are You Ready...?" Pick it up and give it a spin - it's a lot of fun and very well done. Check out "Country Love Song" and "Nice and Slow" - these would have been great singles at the time as well! Enjoy!
Thank you Amazon.com!.......2004-09-23
I would like to Thank Amamzon.com for sending me this materpiece. It is, in my opinion, one of his best albums. It does geta reputation of beinga disco album but listening closely there's only really a definite Gospel feel on every track. You can hear his voice progress from his young days into his latter day lower register voice through the course of this album. I like how even though it's mid-late seventies R&B there are other styles that can be heard in the mix. I like the strings, they give it a majectic feel. There is not that much synthesiser, except on the track three way loev affair. There is a definite disco feel to some of the songs, others are more like straight R&B. My favourite two songs are Three way love affair and Ncie and Slow.
Elton John meets Philly Soul... how cool is that?.......2004-06-22
This should be one of the best-known and most beloved moments in Elton John's career - but it isn't. Two iconic sounds of the 70's combine and the result is rich, buttery ear candy - but it gets consistently glossed-over when people run down the handful of enduring pop music from the disco era. Elton makes his bid to be one of the great blue-eyed-soul singers of his time - and few even notice. Elton would quickly move on from here, but echoes of this benchmark can be heard in all that follows. A true forgotten classic in every sense.

Lush, sweeping, painstakingly produced, and often terribly sad, the music of British duo Lighthouse Family is simply gorgeous. Whether one digs the pair's insistence on manicuring every element of their sound, there can be little debate that Paul Tucker and Tunde Baiyewu craft pop melodies that are Bacharachian in their grandeur. Whatever Gets You Through the Day, the pair's third album, carries on the tradition; the musician credits take up half a page in the CD insert, and it sounds like it. The majestic, bigger-than-life "End of the Sky" takes a full orchestral treatment, while "(I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be) Free/One"--borrowing from both Nina Simone and U2--reaches its crescendo with a full-tilt gospel choir. It's impressive but also a tough act to follow, and the disc's second half feels somewhat sluggish. Still, the haunting beauty of comparatively low-key songs like "Run" and "Happy"--which nevertheless feature prominent strings and, like all the other songs, Baiyewu's chocolaty voice--qualify Whatever Gets You Through the Day as a modern suite worth investigating. --Kim Hughes

Customer Reviews:
Hey!!!.......2007-05-21
I was in a Virgin Record Megastore on Gulf Rd. in Kuwait, when a young Arab man said to me, "Hey, you want to hear something cool?" and thus began my love affair with 'The Lighthouse Family.' I can remember taking this album (I mean CD; you can pretty much guess my age) home and listening to it over and over again. I just love their smooth, soothing sound. A well-known British contemporary group, Lighthouse really hasn't been discovered in the US yet. It's a shame too, because I think they'd attract a loyal audience. Tunde Baiyweu's voice sounds like a human saxaphone. Although this may be their best work, it's not my favorite of their albums, but it is one of my favorite overall albums. Pick this up and get hooked!
You Always Want What You Haven't Got..........2005-08-04
And you should be wanting this album if you don't own it already.
A brilliant follow on from their earlier 2 albums, with plenty of new material in the unique style of the Lighthouse Family.
Highlights include "(I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be) Free/One" and "You Always Want What You Haven't Got". This brings me to add that U2's 'One', arguably the greatest song ever written, is beautifully integrated into track 3 of this masterful album.
A must have album for fans and the like.
Addicted!.......2005-05-13
I never thought I'd get addicted to this! I'm usually into rock - listen to Eric Johnson, Mark Knopfler, Toto, etc.. but there's some magic about Lighthouse Family. They suck you in without you realizing it! I can't get past the first 3 tracks, they are so good. Its somehow gotten into my system, so I keep listening to them over and over again. I don't want to pigeonhole music into categories, but I always love music that makes you feel good. And this is one of the best feel-good albums. I also loved Postcards from Heaven, another great album.
Beautifull.......2004-02-26
I don't know what I like best the appealing/interesting text e.g. "You Always Want What You Haven't Got" or the feel good music. However my girlfriend and I enjoy this CD as much as the other two Lighthouse CDs. Maybe the best is that the songs get better and better as more often you listen to their music. Besides that I have a lot of friends that like the CD too.
I suppose Lex from Switzerland doesn't understand English otherwise he would not write such an incompetent review.
Totally commercial.......2004-01-02
This music was made for making lot's of money. That is obvious. Although it is perfectly produced, you got to take a closer look. I always wondered why people liked it so much. The singer absolutely can't sing. He hardly ever pitches the note, sings flat and without any emotion or vibrato in his voice. This is disgusting to me. And the music is boring. Slick stuff for Yuppies.
But I guess if music is that perfectly produced, people just take it as a gentle elevator/toilet muzak (which is noise to me).

Half the tunes are fine.......2003-03-01
I bought this CD, and although it contains a few of my all time favorite songs, the sound quality is terrible. All of the accompanying music is washed out, and the vocalists sound like they are using megaphones. I've heard better sound on my car radio. Love several of the tracks, hate the tinny sound.
Lost Soul.......2001-03-18
Unfortunately in this millennium no one has been able to capture the soulful sound that made The Righteous Brothers famous International Recording Stars. Millions of people have enjoyed their number one hits that are on this CD like "Unchained Melody" and "You've Lost That Loving Feelin' ". But unless you have enjoyed the unbelievable sound of Bobby Hatfield pouring his heart out in "I Believe" or the combined intertwining soulful sound of Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley giving you their hearts in "You'll Never Walk Alone" you will never truly know the talents of The Righteous Brothers. Unless the Various Record Companies who recorded the brothers decide to re-release the record albums produced in the 1960's the true Blue Eyed Soul of The Righteous Brothers will be lost in the last Millennium.
TERRIFIC COMPILATION OF TUNES.......2000-10-11

Customer Reviews:
An excellent compilation of his earlier years.......2005-11-18
I can't believe no one else has written a review on this yet. I also can't believe that some people don't even realize that he was in these 3 different groups. Some people just know him for his solo work afterwards, which is sad because the stuff he did with the groups is just as good, if not better. Steve Winwood has a lot of other good songs besides "Higher Love," "Back In The High Life," "The Finer Things," "Roll With It," etc. Songs like "Gimme Some Lovin'," "Can't Find My Way Home," "Low Spark of High-Heeled Boys," and "Sea of Joy" are every bit as good as his solo hits.
This compilation is kind of set up the sameway as Eric Clapton's "The Cream of Clapton," except none of his solo songs are included on this. Like "The Cream of Clapton" has the best of Cream, Derek and the Dominos, and a Blind Faith song, "Classic Steve Winwood" has the best of The Spencer Davis Group, Traffic, and three other Blind Faith Songs. Although the two CD's are set up the same way, you can't really compare the music to each other because Steve Winwood does ethnic rock and Eric Clapton does blues rock.
Every single song on this collection is great and I highly recommend this one. The 20th Century Masters CD has the same songs on it, but it's missing three really good ones that are found on here. If you buy this CD along with "Back In The High Life," you'll have all the Steve Winwood you'll ever need.

A Vision in Monochrome, Eyes Sooty with Mascara, Hair Piled Up to Perfection, and a Sequinned Dress So Glamorous that it Suggests We Could Barely Inhabit the Same Planet: The High Contrast Photo that Adorned the Cover of Dusty Springfield's Greatest Hits was Iconic. In It's So-sharp Black and White, There was Much Mystique - it was as Much About What You Couldn't See - which is Exactly as it Should Be. These Days Dusty is a Gay Icon, Seemingly Celebrated for her Troubles and Insecurities as Much as She is for her Records. For Those who Like Pop Music to have Myth and Legend, the Ability to Take You Over the Rooftops and Out of Your Skin, the Run of 45s on this Compilation is all You Really Need to Know About Dusty Springfield.
Customer Reviews:
PEERLESS BLUE-EYED SOUL FROM DUSTY.......2007-07-01
Practically every one of Dusty Springfield's singles from 1963 to 1970, the hits and the "obscurities". An omission is her US hit "Wishin' and Hopin'" - but then, this 2 CD set only claims to include "all the British singles from her goldern era". This distinction reminds us that seldom did her record company choose the same A&B sides for the States as had been released in the UK. For example, her hauntingly fragile rendition of Carole King's "Goin' Back" was unbelievably never released in the States as a single - despite its top ten status in Britain.
What a strong testimony this 2 CD set is to her unequalled grasp of the Phil Spectorish girl-group sound, R&B, Motown and soul. Compiled by Saint Etienne, with well-detailed liner notes by Bob Stanley, this set gives us the mono mixes, so there's no attempt made to dress up the classic mono sound. Stand out hits are: "I Close My Eyes and Count to Ten" and "I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself" - this latter hit just keeps getting better with the passing of time. Stand out obscurities are: "I'm Gonna Leave You" (one of the few times Dusty wrote a song; this time sharing the credits with Madeline Bell and Lesley Duncan) and "Don't Say It Baby". These latter two songs ache with compelling sadness and add to the already solid case for Dusty's place as the best British female singer ever!
The Singular Source .......2006-11-10
Excellent compilation of Dusty's A & B sides, most in their original mono form. Ace sound and presentation. The best introduction to Dusty on the market.
Finally... an ESSENTIAL Dusty compilation .......2006-09-20
Do we need yet another Dusty compilation when the market is already flooded with them ? Well, the short answer is a resounding YES because Mercury finally gets it right by putting out a truly essential compilation with a theme - her Complete A & B sides released in the UK between 1963 and 1970 and the result is simply smashing. There's no messing about. The singles are in strict chronological order with the A sides on one disc and the B sides on another. They are also in rare mono - the original singles mix - unless the tapes are unavailable, in which case the familiar stereo mixes are used (eg, Losing You and Little By Little). Some of the hits are aurally very different in mono (eg, Goin' Back) and a special treat. Some of the fades also run on longer than usual (eg, In The Middle Of Nowhere and Some Of Your Lovin').
Dusty's glorious non-stop run of hits (plus a couple of unconscionable misses such as the funky Northern Soul classic, What's It Gonna Be and Clive Westlake's excellent I Will Follow You) on Disc 1 simply leaves you breathless and giddy with joy and admiration at how in the 60s Dusty was faultless in her selection of original material for singles. Songs tucked away on the B sides were almost as good. Four were even written or co-written by her (Once Upon A Time, Something Special, I'm Gonna Leave You and Go Ahead On). My own personal favourite is the little known Goffin & King girl group beat number I'll Love You For A While, given a real punchy treatment here.
And you can't ask for more in terms of packaging. Eclipse has used a gorgeous photo of a sooty-eyed Dusty circa 1965 for the front cover and it's just fabulous ! Complete A & B Sides 1963-1970 is truly an essential buy. Hurry, grab yourself a copy.

Original Boy Band?.......2007-04-07
The Walker Brothers were one of those sixties groups which straddled the pop divided between what you mum and dad were listening to and the new sounds emerging out Britain and Mowtown. Looking to the past they drew inspiration from the present. However for most fans (ie. girls) it was their sexy good looks that got much of the attention. By '67 it was all passe and the brooding good looks were not enough to sustain a career.
With the passage of time one can fully appreciate their acheivement of producing quality material for what was largely a juvenile market. I think it was this ability the merge the old and the (then) new that gives the material, with its formal structures, its strength today... and of course Scott's voice, probably one of the greatest voices of our time.
The box set features all of their releases (the 60's and no so good 70's) and some unreleased material, most notably different versions of the Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore. But what makes this indespensible is the freshness of the sound mix. Too often in the past releases of 60's music have sounded dull and lifeless. The engineers have done a great job on this one.
The sun is gonna shine forevermore on this one.
The definitive collection for Walker Brothers fans.......2007-03-08
At last, all in one place, the collection I had always been hoping to find. Every hit and album track from their entire recorded career is present. From their earliest 1960's recordings through to their final 1970's reunion recordings...all the great hits as well as the more obscure album tracks. The collection is nicely boxed, with photos and biographical text, and the analog tracks are nicely restored to their full orchestral, wall of sound, glory. A must for every Walker Brothers fan.
Essential.......2007-02-28
Either you have the six solo Walker Brothers LPs (or maybe the first three sixties classics) or you don't have any of them, so of course you'll need this. If you're a fan already the 13 unreleased bonus cuts, while a mixed bag (even Scott Walker isn't going to cut James Brown or Wilson Pickett, though you don't cringe), are priceless - "Lazy Afternoon" (a great theater song from the time when Scott appeared on Broadway as a child actor) or the very best "Shadow of Your Smile" recorded by anyone.
There's more than a full CD of Scott's first Brel-inspired compositions spread over the set; and the three 70s CDs are hard to find now, which all have moments, in particular the third with Scott's bizarre composing genius first blooming.
The packaging and booklet are fun, very 60s fanzine circa mod London - though a bit more information might have been shoehorned in.
Though John can sing there is not one song you wish Scott hadn't done instead - I was crushed John was the vocalist for Randy Newman's "Marie". Scott should do a Nillson-ish Newman album.
The packaging as with the reissue of the Scott box set provokes one complaint - the fifth CD wedged into a cardboard page is not a good idea, I'd suggest the overlapping method used for the Faces box. To keep it from harm, move it to a jewel case.
Scott has one of the very great voices in pop history - and it's exactly the same today as then, eerie. He and Dusty Springfield - heaven. Real pop art, unlike that Warhol imposter. If you have any interest at all in that era and style, pop for this. Bowie wishes he could croon like this. Scott is Johnny Mathis and Captain Beefheart rolled into one. This is the Mathis side.
Crucial.......2006-11-22
What more can you say, it's all the Walker Brothers material, it's crucial. In terms of the non music aspects, the cds come in a hilarious booklet that says "WOW! OUTTA SITE! FANTASTIC 5 DISC SET!" on the front. It's cheesy as hell and it warms my heart.
