From Jazziz
Rex Rideout, who has produced such artists as George Howard, Gerald Albright, the Temptations, and Luther Vandross, decided to try his hand at conceptualizing Club 1600, a disc featuring some of the best-known names in contemporary jazz. The disc is highlighted by appearances by trumpeter Randy Brecker, vibraphonist Roy Ayers, singer Maysa Leak, saxophonist Kim Waters, guitarist Chieli Minucci, and saxophonist David Mann, who gives a powerful performance on a version of the Temptations' hit "Stay."

4 out of 5 stars Don't Judge An Album By Its Cover.......2004-08-12

For some reason when I first considered this album, it was hard for me to get past the cover "art." It's not everyday you see a laundry list of artist names and the unusually prominent statement, "Produced by Rex Rideout."

While I don't "get" any of the hullabaloo over producers, I can appreciate production values. I didn't try to spend much time understanding the "concept" that keyboardist/composer/producer Rideout had in mind for this album so it was surprising when this CD was in my player continuously without a break.

The CD, a compilation of nine tracks, runs a little over 40 minutes total covering styles from smooth jazz to R&B to straight out jazz. Looked at one way, it's an unusual treat that exposes the listener to a smorgasbord of artists. However, I found myself wanting more...the playing time is just too short. Initially I wanted this disc for the hit "Stay," a nicely arranged cover of a popular Temptations song, and I found that I stayed for the entire album.

"Argentina" is an original composition by Rideout. It features an ensemble of Ronnie Garrett on bass, Rohn Lawrence on guitar, David Mann while listed as a flute solo sounds more like sax, Carl Monga on percussion, Little John Roberts on drums, and Rideout on keyboards and piano. This is a catchy number that rapidly came to be my personal "hit." It has a "sounds like" appeal for me, also.

"Give Love A Chance" features a luxuriously smooth vocal performance by Maysa. While my taste runs toward instrumental and away from R&B vocals, I really enjoy this song. Here's a flute solo by David Mann that's notable.

"Where You Want To Be" has a beautiful MIDI vibe solo by Roy Ayers and vocals by Will Downing.

"More Precious Than Gold" is a song featuring vocals by Vinx. I never heard of Vinx before, but this is really a lovely song that feels like it would make a good wedding song.

"Whisper Goodnight" is an original composition with a wonderfully intoxicating club feel to it. This tender song prominently features Rideout on piano and synthesizers with Ronnie Garrett on bass, Michael Campbell on guitar and Little John Roberts on drums. This song's a winner!

"Stay" is no doubt a hit song, and one that you might get stuck on as much as the smooth jazz stations did. It opens with some programming by Rideout that becomes the background for what is really David Mann's beautiful alto sax and Chieli Minucci on a fine solo guitar. It's just great how Minucci and Mann put it together on this tune.

"1600 Broadway" is a lot like "Argentina" in that David Mann is listed as a flute solo, but his playing has a real sax sound to it. Rohn Lawrence turns in an excellent performance on guitar. This is a nice tune, but I longed for the band to break into an improvisational groove especially when it leads the listener to the exceptionally jazzy...

"So Not So," an outstanding and original composition by Rideout, begins with a menacing and seductive bass line by Ronnie Garrett. Garrett carries an unfettered coolness throughout in conjunction with Randy Brecker's muted trumpet and Roger Byam on tenor sax. Little John Roberts keeps a beat that is beyond cool and Rex Rideout on piano puts everything in perspective. Man...who can't dig this song?

My bottom line...it's a fine Rex Rideout album with a lot of wonderful guests, but it's too short. Life can be that way sometimes; I hope yours is long and satisfying!

2 out of 5 stars You've Got to Be Kidding....Right??.......2001-07-14

I just purchased this disc....ok, Rex Rideout is generally considerred a "good" producer. He worked with some of the best in Contempo Jazz: Marion Meadows, Najee and George Howard.

But, nothing could have prepared me for this pap!

Words cannot express my disappointment....The cut, "Stay", is the best cut on the disc!!! The rest of the stuff is total under utilization of the "talent" at hand.

So sad, so unhappy you will be when you purchase.....you've now been warned twice......

2 out of 5 stars This is a classic case...........2000-11-22

Rex Rideout is generally a fine producer. He has composed for Marion Meadows, Najee and especially Will Downing and the late George Howard. This could be one project where his concept fell flat. OR a classic case of a producer being able to write for others but not for their own project. Evidence of which is there are about 5 reviews here and TWO USED CD's above available for sale....you do the math/listening.....

5 out of 5 stars Club 1600.......2000-10-26

I would have never known about this CD if I wasn't visiting Maysa Leaks website and she stated that Club 1600 was currently playing in her CD player. After searching for the CD through Amazon, I went out a got my own copy. This CD is very good. A nice combination of smooth jazz and mellow vocals.

Roy Ayers makes his presence known on the vibes with the song "Where You Want To Be" teaming up with Will Downing. Vinx and Allison Williams slam "Spend the Night". I heard the song on the radio but never knew who was singing the vocals. I recommended the CD to some freinds to add to their collection.

5 out of 5 stars Don't Sleep On This!.......2000-09-17

I've been looking for this cd since I first heard it came out and none of the larger chains seemed to have heard of it. I finally found it, and yes it was WELL worth the wait! I'm not familiar with Rex Rideout, but he is certainly someone I'll be paying more attention to in the future. It is an excellent conglomeration of vocalists and musicians. I listened to this cd straight through three times. It is a simply amazing body of work. My favorites include "Give Love A Chance" with guest vocals by Maysa. "Where You Belong" with Will Downing. And "Spend The Night" with Vinx and Allyson Williams, two vocalists that have never received their due. My favorite instrumental piece is "Whisper Goodnight." I hope people will give this cd a chance. I, personally was very surprised to find only three reviewers. Take a chance. I promise you won't be disappointed. It may be hard to find, but I found it to be more than worth the extra effort involved to find it. Rex Rideout is definitely a man to watch.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Smooth Jazz.......2003-06-24

Very smooth and flowing CD. Some of the greatest jazz musicians of our era is laying down the smooth jazz on this CD. Rex Rideout has done an exceptional job on this one. I recommend this CD to all those who listen to smooth jazz.

5 out of 5 stars club 1600 Rex Rideout.......2003-03-17

this cd is hot ,it's the best purchase that i've made all year. Rex Rideout is my keyboard/producer hero

5 out of 5 stars Club 1600 Has Turned It Up!.......2003-01-17

I purchased the first Club 1600 CD after hearing that it was a good jazz artist collaboration disc. Relative to the hype the CD was at best average, and a disappointment. Well, they have certainly remedied this with "Ridin' High." Rex Rideout, the arranger of this effort, seems to have taken some "strong" pills since his last attempt and has created a seriously progressive follow-up CD. The title cut "Ridin' High" and the song "Tease" are worth the price of the CD if everything else on it stunk, which is not the case here. I am not sure which CD is indicative of what Club 1600 is about but I hope that they are able to build on "Ridin' High." It's pretty good.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2002-06-19

This CD is the ultimate Jazz CD out right now. I really enjoyed ever cut. I would recommend this for all Real Jazz Lovers. This CD is definitely worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars This is a winner........2002-04-25

There has definitely been a creativity lapse in smooth jazz for the year 2002. This CD, which is essentially a compilation by different artists, breaks from that lapse. I'm on composition number 5, and I have already declared this a winner as each has been most mememorable and satisfying. It leans toward the R&B side of smooth jazz, but it is, if fact, smooth and the recording quality is excellent. I crown this the best smooth jazz purchase I have made this year.

3 out of 5 stars Sleepy Smooth Jazz.......2005-11-16

This is just another collection of very boring "smooth jazz" music. The only reason I gave it three stars is because of "So Not So", which features Randy Brecker on trumpet. This is probably how Miles Davis would do "Blue In Green" if he were alive today, muted trumpet and all.
