Customer Reviews:
I was duped.......2007-06-11
Everyone raved about this album.I really like his voice and music with America, but this is by far the worst cd I've ever bought.Even the packaging was cheap and boring.
esplendido album.......2007-06-07
Great album, great effort, great voices, compositions. Go on, go on... One great westcoast album.
Great Songwriter.......2007-05-21
Gerry Beckley has consistently shown that he can produce intelligent and enjoyable pop/rock music. This new set of tunes features an all star supporting cast of back up musicians that round things out nicely. Rusty Young of Poco fame lends his pedal steel and other skills to 'Arms' and my favorite drummer of all time, Russ Kunkel is featured on 'Love & Leaving'. The only thing I miss on Gerry's solo stuff is Dewey Bunnell. I love Gerry's unique voice, but I prefer the America stuff where the disc is broken up by songs in Dewey's lower register. A whole disc of Gerry is too much of a good thing for me sometimes. This probably comes from years of saturated America listening! I keep waiting for the 'Dewey' song to come on to break things up. Anyway, you can't go wrong with this CD if you are a fan of America and Gerry's great songwriting.
Don't waste your money.......2007-05-15
First off let me say that I have most of America's studio albums and I thought Beckley's Van Go Gan was a fine solo effort...but this CD is very poor. The songs are lackluster and without any hooks to draw you in. America has never been known for having thought-provoking lyrics but the words in HF are just plain sappy. And to finish off this sickeningly sweet album are the album graphics. The front cover looks like an amusement park in the distance at night and on the inside is a picture of Beckley's dad sitting next to an airplane? There may be some vague reference to these "themes" in a song but I couldn't find them.
To be short; just about any of America's previous work, except their latest release, or Beckley's fist solo effort far surpass HF. This release is quite disappointing. Don't waste your money.
First Class.......2007-04-29
Another Awesome job by Gerry. These two guys are just so talented. Thank God for Gerry and Dewey and AMERICA...They keep me standing upright in a storm of rotten music today. The music today has never ever been worse that it is now. The record industry wonders why sales are down...!!!!!!!!!!If it weren't for Jazz and groups like America I would have dug my own grave a few years ago

Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04
This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Album Description
Gerry Beckley is best known as a founding member of the classic-rock band, America, whose catchy melodies, mellow acoustic sound and close harmonies have made it among the most endearing and enduring acts in rock. Van Go Gan is a reissue of the singer/songwriter's first solo album that includes 4 unlisted, hidden bonus tracks. The record was co-produced by Beckley with Hank Linderman. Guests on it include Carl Wilson (The Beach Boys), Timothy B. Schmit (The Eagles), Robert Lamm (Chicago), Windham Hill artist/ soundtrack composer Mark Isham and late great actor Phil Hartman (doing background voices as a televangelist).

America Man.......2007-03-09
I really enjoyed the entire cd, a true must for any America fan. I really love the way Gerry can touch on many emotions in his music.
VAN GO GONE.......2007-03-08
NOT UP TO HIS OTHER EFFORTS. THIS VIEW OF MINE MIGHT BE DUE TO MY JUST RECEIVING HIS LATEST CD WHICH IS THE BEST AND AS GOOD AS THEIR NEW AMERICA CD.
Gerry Beckley - At his AMERICA best!.......2007-03-08
This CD is beautiful, but I hope it dosen't break up his partnership with Dewey as America has always been one of my all time favorite groups. This CD would have been even better if Dewey had sung either backup or 2 part harmony!
Melodious pop music at it's very, very best.......2006-07-05
I'm a huge America fan so it's kind of hard to be too objective about this album but let me start off by saying that this is a really good CD. Its melodious pop music at it's very, very best. If you like America you'll love this. Great harmonies throughout with the likes of Eagles bassist Timothy B. Schmit, Brian Wilson band member Jeffrey Foskett and the sadly missed, late, great Carl Wilson helping out. I guess it can't fail with those guys in the studio. Song writing of the highest calibre with beautiful vocals by Gerry Beckley who still sounds as fresh as ever. From the opening cut "Emma" to the final "Hard To Sleep" it's a joy to listen to this well crafted music being played by a musician who clearly knows his business. The re-worked version of America's "I Need You" (written by Gerry when he was only sixteen) has a great saxophone break and is a stand out track, as is the stunningly beautiful intro to "Sunrise Sunset". Another beauty is "Goodbye Highway" and the harmonies at the end of "Now Sue" are exquisite. A good CD well worth buying in my humble opinion.
Van Go Gan.......2006-03-04
This was a great cd fron Gerry Beckley of America. He shows his talents for music and makes it enjoyable to the listener. Can' wait for more for Gerry.

Album Description
The sounds for this series were recorded in 3D by Chuck Plaisance. His recording system is designed to simulate human hearing, using a binaural head microphone to capture depth, height, width, as well as directional movement. No special equipment is needed to get 3D sound from traditional stereo speakers. In fact, these albums will make your system - speakers or headphones - sound like it never has before. You are the experience.
All pieces contain compositions of pure Nature Sounds produced, arranged, edited and mastered by Chuck Plaisance and Suzanne Doucet. (aka Virtual Audio Environment).

Perfect To Fall Asleep To.......2006-07-20
I bought this CD because I didn't really know which type of sound I'd relax most too be it ocean, rain, forest, etc. Well I love all the sounds on this sampler, and I play it every night. My hubby says that 20 mins into the CD there's a rooster crowing, but I wouldn't know because by that time I'm already fast asleep. Great stuff!
3-Dimensional Pure Nature Sounds.......2005-11-21
This excellent compilation of 20 different Nature Sound albums was out of print, but is now finally available again through ONLY NEW AGE MUSIC(repackaged and remastered). This album creates a journey through different Nature scenes all recorded by Chuck Plaisance, with a special microphone that simulates human hearing. The sounds were then edited and composed, arranged and mixed like an orchestrated piece but still remain pure Sounds of Nature. Like Bernie Krause Doucet and Plaisance take essential Nature Sounds and recreate an ambience that takes you even deeper into the essence of Nature.

HUMAN NATURE IS PURE AMERICA AT THEIR BEST !.......2006-09-23
HEY DEWEY, HEY GERRY!! GREAT WORK HERE ON HUMAN NATURE! MAN,IT TURNED THE GREY HAIRS ON MY HEAD BACK TO BROWN, WHAT A BLAST FROM THE PAST. IT WAS SO GOOD TO HEAR GREAT MUSIC FROM MUSICIANS WHO KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING AND CREATING. AS MUCH AS I LOVED AMERICA'S SONGS FROM THE 1970'S, THE SONGS THEY CAME OUT WITH IN THE 1980'S WERE EVEN BETTER, ON SUCH MUSIC CD'S AS, IT'S YOUR MOVE, ALIBI, A VIEW FROM THE GROUND AND THE UNDERRATED, PERSPECTIVE. I THINK HUMAN NATURE MEASURES UP TO WHAT IS PROBABLY AMERICA'S BEST CD EVER, 1994'S HOUR GLASS, WHICH IS A CLASSIC ROCK/POP MUSIC CD. GERRY AND DEWEY, YOU ARE THE LIVING EMBODIMENT OF
BUDDY HOLLY, LIVE LONG AND PROSPER! THE WORLD NEEDS YOU GUYS & YOUR MUSIC.
Very good one !.......2005-02-08
From the two opening songs "From a moving train" and "Wednesday Morning" you are listening to classic America. The rest of the cd is not bad at all, but clearly those two songs are among the best ones ever recorded by the band (and this are not Russ Ballard songs). So you can hear the armonies and clarity of the recording....great work.
I have to give it five stars, and have only listened twice!.......2004-12-01
It's that good. There's nothing bad about this album. The only song I personally don't like it 'Overwhelming', but that's just a personal taste. How would I describe this album? Most of the songs are fairly mysterious folk songs and when I listen to them I keep thinking about that old John Lennon song from the White Album, 'Cry baby Cry'. A lot of these songs are in a similar vein to that song. but then America always were into mysterious folk music, so that can hardly be a surprise. However, there are soem fresh gems like a few pieces of 90's pop-rock. the best one of those being 'Secrets', well, okay, that's my favourite. Then one of the songs is a jazzy kind of reggae number. That's cool. Town and coutnry is a an interesting country-pop song that is driven by some bouncy harpsichord playing, similar to one of the songs on 'Holiday'. I suppose that's the other side of this album, fun country-pop. then there's the fun rocker 'Hot Town'. Most of the songwriting is done by Gerry Beckley. Oh, yes, the production is good, too.
America rules!.......2004-10-09
I bought HUMAN NATURE a few weeks ago and still this CD is the favourite in my CD player. I keep listening to it and I find it really addictive. All the songs are just beautiful and take me back to the first America albums always reminding me that the sound is more like the ninenties. I recommend any America fan to buy Human Nature, it is a must for your collection. Do not miss the grandness of songs like FROM A MOVING TRAIN or MOMENT TO MOMENT, WEDNESDAY MORNING etc.
Five stars for this CD and if it was possible 10 stars and thanks to the best band ever!
A True Embarassment!.......2004-07-25
Never mind what some of the other reviewers have gushed about Human Nature.
>People are selling it on Amazon for a penny! Think about that!
This album should have never been released. For a classy group like America with a fairly impressive pedigree and an historical string of quality projects..especially their first few releases...this one is agonizing to listen to and makes your heart break for Gerry and Dewey.
In the wake of a very solid latter day release like Hourglass, this one is extremely hard to take. Production is unbearably weak. This collection sounds like it was recorded on a shoestring budget. The songs themselves are non descript and the weakest in the entire America canon.
Take it from someone who is an avid fan and owner of every single release by the guys, Human Nature is clearly the low point of a long discography.
>It is noteworthy that after the abysmal failure of this album America ceased with new recordings.

Human Nature ROCKS!!!.......2007-02-16
I have always love this song of Madonna. Seems like this song is the only the best one that I like of hers. This song is about her attitude and express her feelings in it. I always play "I Am Not Your Bitch Mix" because it has a great beat of Human Nature. Also I have seen her Human Nature video on VH1 and MTV I really love her video its the best of all other videos she made in it. Great black uniform and gold high heel boots looks real good on her!! I rate this 5 stars!!!
Another Madonna Classic Single!.......2006-11-05
I love this song, standing alone. But with some of the best singles from her collection, including the Howie Tee Mix, the Runway Club Mix Radio Edit, and the Love is Nature Mix are all reworked to perfection and enhance this single for the better.
This is sort of a F*** You! Song Madonna released after the backlash from '92 Sex Book and that naughty phase she went to that we all secretly loved but wouldnt admit to! When she whispers "Express yourself, dont repress yourself" shivers go down your spine. Also, the message she was explaining was such a strong one that even when you hear it today she seems to be a little ticked off at the people who had dissed her.
The song is a slap in the face to the people who thought they were on the top of the world, because this song really I my mind brought Madonna back to the top of female Pop and back as the Queen!
I love this single. I cannot express how great this single is and how its urgency and rebellion still lies in the words of the song and the remixes just make it more timid and ready to pounce out of the cage, where as some other ones make it mellow and do the opposite and take a new spin on it.
If you like this maxi single check out: EROTICA,JUSTIFY MY LOVE, AND SECRET.
I identify with this song.......2006-05-29
I love this single. Not only am I a HUGE Madonna fan, but I identify with its theme. So many times am I put down for, ironically, being a Madonna fan. But, like the song says, I'm not sorry. I like Madonna, and there's nothing you can do about it, plus, you don't know me, so suck it up and shut it. Here is a review of each track:
1. Radio Edit (4:09, 10/10): I like this alternative mix. It's really cool and house-piano-driven.
2. Runway Edit (3:59, 10/10): God, I love the Danny Tenaglia remixes of this song! This has a cool piano line, too.
3. Runway Club Mix (8:19, 10/10): Even better than the radio mix. I was surprised to find that this was over 8 minutes long, because usually "runway" mixes are under 7:59. Then again, the Friscia & Lamboy runway mix of "Work That Body (Oh Really)" is 9:56...
4. I'm Not Your Bitch Mix (8:11, 10/10): The absolute best dub on here. The spoken lines are a nice touch, too.
5. Howie Tee Remix (4:48, 5/10): The mixes by Howie Tee are closest to the album version. I kind of don't like the two mixes. Honestly, Mr. Tee did a horrible job. The album version is much better.
6. Howie Tee Clean Remix (4:48, 5/10): See previous track review.
7. Radio Version (4:32, 10/10): You can't go wrong with the album version, albeit edited. The sample fits the song's tone nicely.
8. Bottom Heavy Dub (7:57, 10/10): Cool. The looped "deal with it" is awesome.
9. Love is the Nature Mix (6:41, 10/10): The best Tenaglia Mix. Love is indeed the nature!
TOTAL EVALUATION: 18/20. Gets 2 points off due to Howie Tee's horrendous remixes. Still a great single.
Human Nature .......2005-10-10
1. Radio Edit-- new version.
2. Runaway Club Mix Radio Edit-- club radio mix.
3. Runaway Club Mix-- full-length version of track 2.
4. I'm Not Your Bitch Mix-- dub version.
5. Howie Tee Remix-- urban version.
6. Howie Tee Clean Remix-- censored version of track 5.
7. Radio Version-- edit version of album version.
8. Bottom Heavy Dub-- another dub version. BEST mix.
9. Love Is The Nature Mix-- like the last one but with vocals and includes saxaphone.
5 & 6 are remixed by Howie Tee and the rest are remixed by Danny Tenaglia. I prefer the Danny Tenaglia mixes. 5/5
The worst single I've ever had!.......2005-04-23
I want to sell mine!!! This single is terrible!! all the tracks are almost the same! You just can't hear it from the beginning to the end!!! It's horrible!!! The original song "Human Nature" is so good... but all of those mixes are a trash!!! I'd rather Bedtime Story Single!! That one is much better!

Harem Scarem have done it yet again! This album is absolutely awesome. It's filled with great songs from start to end and jam packed with brilliant vocal melodies and outstanding harmonies. The riffs are great and the solos are cool. The production is top-notch. Actually, the production is perfect! I've been a fan for a long time now but I'm still blown away as to how good these guys are and how consistent they are at releasing quality music time after time. Definitely a great addition to your Harem Scarem catalogue and certainly one of the highlights of 2006 for any melodic rock fans. The Japanese import includes an acoustic version of Higher which is a nice bonus.

Positively Breathtaking!.......2006-02-20
This album is phenomenal. Human Nature are very talented individuals and great personalities. I had the pleasure of meeting them in Australia when they came to the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal in 2004. I was amazed by how nice and down-to-earth they were. Their album has beautiful ballads and soulful lyrics. This is one boy band that I will always love! Soul songs, soulful personalities, what more could you want in a boy band?
Great album. It really is one of the best!.......2005-10-17
I love this album. It has all of my favorite songs by Human Nature. I especially love the song "Cruel", its such a beautiful ballad. Human Nature is known for their great voices and they are very talented songwriters. This album has its fair share of upbeat songs and slow heart-warming ballads. You can't go wrong!
