The musical ghosts of Gary Numan, Kraftwerk, Mantronix, and Bambaataa hover in the air as one listens to Luke Slater's Wireless, a far more focused, four-on-the-floor, electro-flavored platter than his vibrantly all-over-the-place 1997 debut Freek Funk. But don't worry--Wireless pays distinct homage to the past, yet this is one of those rare CDs that pushes the envelope of techno forward while partying all night like tomorrow will never come. It's a cheerful record that's difficult to describe without sounding cheesy; it rarely lags in energy even during the moody, deranged downtempo bits such as "Bolt Up." Created with layers of live drums and electrobreaks, and in a manner that coaxes the most emotion possible out of every musical gesture, the CD is a maximalist triumph, a study in the essential contradictions (man vs. machine; robot vs. human) that characterize life at the turn of the century. You can totally dance to it, too. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars fabulous cd.......2007-06-14

All the way one of the best! Great shipping service, fast turnaround, and a quality pressing of a very emotive album.

5 out of 5 stars Wreck of the Fairchild.......2007-04-29

What is it about this curious song? What IS it about this curious song? Combining increasingly frantic nautical SOS transmissions with 80's-era drum-machine electronic beats and a melody that's really just a (compelling) sequence of Dolby chords, this one hits like a crack pipe. I hereby defy any and all Dolby people to experience this bath and not elevate it to the top of the D-queue.

Isn't it puzzling that the two best Dolby songs (Wreck of the Fairchild and Radio Silence (Try to Think of Nothing)) are impossible to come by? What's that all about? I had to search out a 12" vinyl WOTF and rip it to WAV. Contact me if you want me to e-mail it.

"The Golden Age of Wireless" by Thomas Dolby is an album that will stand on it's own two legs quite comfortably in regards to music's 'Golden Age of New Wave'. But Mr. Dolby's duet with Lene Lovich on "Cloudburst on Shingle Street"...is a hidden jewel for the rest of us who also love Lene Lovich. Thank you Mr. Dolby, and thank you Ms. Lovich.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent album.......2007-01-12

Despite its' age The Golden Age of Wireless still holds up just fine and is a must have for any lover of intellectual lyrics and masterful instrumentation.

Thomas didn't actually vanish following the spectacular success of She Blinded Me With Science. His followup to Wireless, The Flat Earth, took his talents into a broader array of musical styles and featured another genuine hit, Hyperactive. The third album, Aliens Ate My Buick, was a mixed bag of tracks that didn't do as well.

Tiring of the demands of the record business machine Thomas turned his digital music expertise to the online world, founding Beatnik (originally Headspace). Besides the creation of what was building to become a rather successful audio codec for web browsing, he was responsible for a good deal of the technology that gave us quadrophonic ringtones on cellphones. It's said that more than 50% of the world's cellphones feature this technology now and as he's commented in the past, "that's a LOT of phones."

Having the financial freedom now to produce his own albums and carry his own tours, Thomas is back in the music game with a new live album and DVD of his just completed (2006) tour, The Sole Inhabitant. His fans eagerly await promised new music in 2007. Those interested in catching up with Thomas' latest doings should refer to his website and blog at [..] where a number of clips from the tour are available as podcasts free of charge.

5 out of 5 stars It's Never As Good As The First Time.......2006-12-25

Although Dolby went on to create some amazing work after this, he never did release another album as consistent of quality. It's flawless. Easily one of my favorite albums of all time, it imbues infectious and irresistible techno pop with real emotion. The result is a work of sublime beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Great band doing a great show!.......2006-04-22

This is the Allman Brothers Band doing what they do best, play live. Great versions of "Rockin' Horse" and "Desdemona", not to mention the 1-2 punch of "Melissa" and "Midnight Rider". Closing the show there's a smoking version o "Layla" sung by Mr. Haynes, that also provides a top-notch slide-guitar work to the song that would make Duane proud. You can't go wrong here.

5 out of 5 stars A really great show then the encore.......2006-02-15

There are many Allman Brothers Instant Live sets available. Peacheads should buy the sets that are special and this one certainly is.
Discs one and two conatin Allmans classics old and new such as Melissa. Patchwork Quilt, You Don't Love Me, etc. Disc 3 opens with the evening's closer -a 39 minute Mountain Jam with a little Les Brers thrown in there to spice things up. Then they play a rarely played treat- Layla. Of course, Duane Allman was a big part of the original Derek and the Dominoes version so the Allmans are revisiting a part of the band's history here. Duane never did a live Layla but Clapton ahd been doing them for years. This is the best live Layla. you'll ever hear from anyone. One note: The Cd says "Don't keep me Wondering is on disc one- it's not but "Trouble No More" is.
A very special concert.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2005-10-10

Great sound quality. But the playing is amazing. Is it possible this is the best the Allmans have ever sounded. Some of my music friends say they think it is possible, especially after hearing this. And this is the hottest Layla I have heard, and I didn't think that would be possible. Wow!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Hear the Second Classic ABB Line-Up in all its Glory.......2005-09-16

Guitarist Derek Trucks told me that the current Allman Brothers line-up really began to coalesce into something special late in the summer of '02. Which puts this release a year into special territory. 2003 was the first year the band began releasing shows via Clear Channel's Instant Live series, and each year has seen some stone cold gems (check out 9-25-04 if you can find it.)

This show, crisply recorded with the lush precision and separation of a soundboard feed but with the immediacy and bootleggy feeling of an audience source, is rock solid all the way through. Derek Trucks is hard left, Warren Haynes is hard right, and you can pick out and appreciate the magic each of them weaves into this holistic tapestry.

"Desdemona," off their latest studio release Hitting the Note, is already a modern classic, and highlights disc 1. The chords underlying the instrumental middle section are evocative of "My Favorite Things," which Coltrane made his own, and the band's jamming on this tune-- especially Derek Trucks-- gets right at that link. Haynes belts out a lowdown gritty "Good Morning Little Schoolgirl" on cd 2; he is clearly the best living interpreter of Howlin' Wolf. Listen for the yin/yang of the Haynes bite and the Trucks soar, anchored by the insanely funky Oteil Burbridge on bass and the only 3-man drum section you'll ever need.

But realistically, you want this for the third disc, comprised of two tracks. The first is a thundering, rarified, majestic take on "Mountain Jam," an instrumental from the band's early days that sounds fresh and vibrant here. Listen to their playful teases at "Birdland" in the middle of the improvisational section; thrill to the way they move seamlessly into, and out of, tow minutes or so of "Afro-Blue" just before the return to theme near the end. It is a spectacular exhibition of bluesy jammy derring do by a band at its peak. Then, the band encores with "Layla," tearing into it with enough ferocity to occupy the song legitimately, not just as homage. Band founder Duane Allman was on the original, of course, making rock history in the process, so this cover harkens back to Duane (and to producer Tom Dowd, who worked with thew Allmans and on the Layla album). Here, Haynes spits out the verse, Gregg Allman gracefully executes the familiar piano coda, and when Trucks swoops and soars above it all, the reference to Duane is anything but subtle.

A great live document from a great live band. If you think you might want this, trust me, you do.

5 out of 5 stars Wow....better than I first thought.........2007-04-12

I came across this CD (from a "Relaxation" series) by accident and thought, oh no, just another compilation of classical music tidbits---and taken from TV commercials/shows yet---oh, spare me! But how wrong I was. Despite its boast of being, "The Most Popular Classical TV Themes in the Universe" title (and because the price was reasonable for a 2-CD set), I bought the CD and was amazed by the quality of the recordings. I was disappointed when neither the manufacturer nor Amazon.com provided a listing of the artists on the recordings; as after hearing some of the tracks, I wanted to buy the artists' complete renditions. My favorite track on this CD, Debussy's "Clair de Lune," is performed so movingly, so stirringly, so hauntingly, that I wish I knew who recorded it. Not all tracks are arranged for orchestra. An example is Handel's "Largo from Xerxes," which is arranged for harp-and-flute, an arrangement which I found delightful and reminiscent of times in the 18th century when the elite held their salons and provided such music at these events. There is no singing on any tracks; it's pure instrumental. I didn't purchase my copy for "relaxation," as the series promotes, for the CD is just as enjoyable to play anytime, anywhere, and especially with a quality headset!

Opening with Clara Rockmore's reworking of Tchaikovsky with the theremin, and finishing with one of Brian Eno's ambient soundscapes, OHM artfully succeeds in its goal of giving a representative (as opposed to the impossible, comprehensive) overview of the first several decades of electronic music. Over 3 discs, 42 compositions, and 96 pages of notes and photos, OHM clearly illustrates the producers' and contributing writers' point that early electronic music is much of the foundation of contemporary music. Herein lies the connective tissue bridging musique concrète, 20th-century classical, electronic experimentation, and the theoretical avant-garde to psychedelia, ambient, dub, techno, electro, and synthpop and the globalization of sound. The groundbreaking uses of loops, sampling, drones, remixes, and cut-and-paste technology are put fully into context. The diversity of music included makes any sort of summation impossible, but that is also the point: electronic music is not really a genre, but an open field of endless possibility. From John Cage's famous "William's Mix" of tape snippets to Karkheinz Stockhausen's electronic orchestral compositions, from David Tudor and Holger Czukay's experiments in unrelated blendings of audio elements to David Behrman's supremely peaceful duet between computers and musicians, the aural renegades on OHM tread where none (save a few of their contemporaries) had gone before. The liner notes convey the incredible amount of hard work and experimentation it took to stitch together many of these pieces in the predigital era. Putting aside the inevitable quibbles about what's missing (much of it due to legal and/or logistical issues), a more complete collection of musical eggheads, eccentrics, and visionaries is hard to imagine. --Carl Hanni

4 out of 5 stars excellent but uncomplete.......2006-11-12

Althought most of the music here is an excellent collection of electronic music history, this 3 CDs lack of the important contribution given by the RAI phonology studios of Milan, Italy in the 50s
(which was bigger than Koln's WDR studios) with Bruno Maderna, Luciano Berio and Luigi Nono.
This is a big mistake. Milans studios were the biggest of europe and produced many important electroacoustic pieces.
If the collection aim to describe faithfully electronic music history, it should include this artists too.

4 out of 5 stars To call it music may be a bit limiting. .......2006-10-24

Some of the tracks on here are "music". That is that they contain all the bits we're trained to experience as music -- melody, etc. Some are not, and the composers would be the first people to tell you that. A lot of these works are reactions to ingrained rules, so they're bound to be jarring.

A more successful way to approach such a broad and varied collection of audio experimentation is to think of it as curated sound. This isn't something to wash the dishes to, or to seduce someone to (although if you did manage to seduce someone with the recordings on this anthology, HOLD ON TO THAT PERSON, because they've got to be a keeper). These are unique sound textures that deserve a close, probably solitary listen, and I think if you're in the right frame of mind, it can be a very rewarding listen.

My main complaint is sequencing: each dicrete piece follows it's own internal logic, so there are more than a couple rough gear changes. However, since each piece is so different, and the collection is so varied, I'm not sure that you could totally escape that.

      4 out of 5 stars A worthwhile collection.......2006-01-11

The OHM collection contains some of those ground breaking electronic compositions that have shaped today's styles, from the early electronic instruments of Theremin and Martenot, through Pierre Schaeffer's Music Concrete tape music and the electronic music of Stockhausen and Subotnick, to the mainframe computer output of Risset and Chowning.

It is unfair to mark this collection down due to the production quality and 'musicality' of its contents, to do so would be to staggeringly miss the point of the development of electronic music through the 20th Century. What this collection shows is the ideas behind those at the cutting edge of the genre before many could even conceive of such output. That said it is hard going at points, as experimental music can be.

Highlights for me are no doubt Olivier Messiaen's 'Oraison' on CD 1, David Tudor's 'Rainforest Version 1' on CD 2 and on CD 3 David Behrman's 'On the Other Ocean' and Maryanne Amacher's 'Living sound Patent Pending'.

      1 out of 5 stars OhMyGodHowDreadful.......2005-08-15

Ok, this collection is supposed to be early works and, thus not expected to be very sophisticated or polished. But the OHM collection sounds like the first attempt of a spastic cat turned-loose on a Moog keyboard. When it is not boreing, this collection of random and dissonant sounds (I can't call it music) is without any redeeming qualities to make it worth while. Don't get me wrong, I am a long-time fan of Wendy (nie Walter) Carlos and some other real pioneers of electronic music. However, I find that the Ohm collection has no similar qualities and is a major disappointment.

      5 out of 5 stars Kid Stockhausen.......2003-01-17

This is required listening for anybody interested in the history of electronic music. Although implicitly aiming for the techno music audience, this audio history is overwhelmingly focused on the classical avant-garde of electro-acoustic composers. The closest you'll get to pop electronica is the Brian Eno track at the end of the third disc. No Kraftwerk, no Moroder, etc. Instead "OHM" manages to point to the continuities between, say, John Cage and artists currently working at the experimental edges of electronica (so-called IDM). It seems to be saying, "You think Kid 606 is visionary? Well check out this Stockhausen track from '59!"

Admittedly, some of the songs are much more interesting to think about than they are to listen to. Some of the early pieces that were made through thosuands of hours of pains-taking tape-splicing could be made today in an afternoon with a digital audio editor and a few effects plug-ins.

It is a beautiful package, containing a 90 page booklet of essays, quotations from the featured artists, and photographs. What all music should be: an education in daring.

I can't believe it took me four years to discover this gem...Wireless delivers the goods, many times over. From first go, Tracks 1 thru to 13 kept me pinned to the speakers. The theme here is TEXTURE: layer upon layer of awesome sounds. Stomping breaks, electro, tech, call it what you will -- fans of good electronica shouldn't go without this. If you're in doubt, let this review be the one that tips you over.

      4 out of 5 stars if u hate it...wait and REPLAY!.......2002-05-20

I was disappointed by my first spin of this disc. I really didn't give it a chance, my first impression was set by the cheesy 80's blah of track two "Sum Ton Tin". My second spin didn't get me much farther. Yep, you guessed it, my third spin was a ...It's interesting. This is noise music; or maybe "techno-noise-core". It has two or three unfortunate tracks, otherwise very well crafted noise. Music to excercise hard to, or even to zone out with. Very Buzzy and dense. Once you get accustomed to the textuaral rhythms they become highly addictive and energizing. Almost like updated versions of Revolting Cocks and Skinny Puppy's instrumental tracks. Give it a chance if interested in noise, vintage techno/synths, and 80's industrial. Cool stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Serious techno; none of that spiritual trance stuff. . ........2001-07-03

This is what techno should be: the soundtrack to a sci-fi thriller unfolding in a dark cityscape surging with the crisscrossing veins of chemical headlights and dotted with the pulse-glow of high-rise office buildings that host secret rendezvous.

I'm a white boy: I can't dance. But this CD makes me want to shake my middle-class Anglo butt. Thank you, Luke Slater.

2 out of 5 stars A stumble from his previous Freek Funk.......2001-02-07

Wow, what happened here. Seriously. Slater's the artist who dropped Freek Funk back in '97, one of the sharper albums of the year and a meaty ride through funk-fueled techno. Wireless instead culls strong influences from electro and breakbeat, and a dose of odd effects for good measure; that's all well and good, unless your breaks sound instantly dated ("Sheer Five Five" plays like an 80's rap track) and the intricate rhythms take a step backward.

The bigger surprise lies in the two big club successes, mixes of "Body Freefall" and "All Exhale," were heavily pushed by DJ's, and it's safe to say serious reworking went on to make them into hits. "Freefall" in particular lies just this side of techno gabba.

Not that there aren't cuts included here that show Luke Slater knows how to work the equipment; whether you have the patience to wade through to find them is another matter.

4 out of 5 stars catch the new groove..........2000-02-01

Luke Slater turns out a gritty edged ,bass infested electronica album, flirting with the industrial sound by driving a slamming beat that will get a dead nun dancing. Interspersed with digitally altered voices and looping sound effects, Luke has created a killer with this one. I defy you to sit still while listening to it. Hard and heavy style. Enjoy!

This is a disc of Peel Session radio broadcasts from 1971,1973 and 1974.The 71 session features Kevin Ayers on guitar and vocal on his own tune ( Clarence ) but apparently not on the others ( well not that I can hear anyway).
One track also appears on "Gong Live".( guess which one )
The version of tropical fish / Selene is wonderful and must have caused some consternation on it's first airing on BBC radio, this is Gong as the lysergic jazz luftwaffe.
