Editorial Reviews
From URB Magazine
The beauty of Discord is that it doesn't suck like collaborations so often do. In fact, it's not too far off to say that the value and power of this first pairing of unsung American techno mavens Stewart Walker and Geoff White is far greater than the sum of its parts. Walker and White cast off the esoteric zeitgeist of past theory-bound works for Force Inc. to follow MRI and Luomo into the promised land of the dance floor. This continuously mixed techno thrust-fest is the new manifesto. Although full of the joy found only in an evening of hard, sweaty dancing, Discord retains just enough of Force Inc.'s angular, clicking pedigree for non-club listening, replete with John Tejada-esque cyclic melody builds ("Merciless Pt. 2") and ever-evolving beats ("Ecstatic Experience" and "Endus") reminiscent of classic Freaky Chakra or current Speedy J. One only hopes Walker and White will make more Discord again.

absolutely amazing!!!!!.......2007-05-16
This is honesty one of the most amazing albums i have ever heard, and to think it is a debut album!!! TDWP combines everything I love about music and roll it all up into one, everything is absolutely perfect, anyone should buy this, it will blow you away!!! Seriously if you dont have this cd right now you have issues, GET THE CD!!!
Not That Great.......2007-04-16
Sorry to rain on everybody's parade over this band, but TDWP is just another metalcore band that isn't doing anything out of the ordinary. First off, their singer is nothing good. For example, in "Swords, Dragons and Diet Coke", at the 2-minute-mark, his nasal singing makes me want to shove screws up my ears. Second off, the music is just simply what your average post-hardcore and/or metalcore band did at least 4 to 5 years before they came along. I give them credit for the song "Texas Is South", as the intro tends to make me somewhat enjoy this song. And the keyboards, yeah, you have keyboards, and they make it stand out somewhat, but so does Soilwork, Chimaira, and Dark Tranquillity, and they do a much better job at it. It's nothing groundbreaking.
Overall, this is yet another generic and rather boring release from Rise Records. New age post-hardcore and metalcore fanatics will enjoy this, but if you want metalcore/post-hardcore that won't bore you, nor will it be vastly hindered by terrible vocals, go for 7 Angels 7 Plagues, Skycamefalling, and Misery Signals.
heard it was good...what an understatement.......2007-01-15
Was with a friend at best buy when we saw the CD who said he heard from a friend that they were a good band. Well I had money and wanted to listen to a new band so I took a chance and bought it. We popped it in once we got to the car and were blown away. Completely different from anything we had heard in the hardcore genre. Keyboards... Bizzare breakdowns that are insane, Singer does it all... High screams, low screams, melodic verses...Everything. This band takes everything good from all other hardcore bands then gives a touch of awesome and creates something unheard of. One of the most original bands in my collection I must say
I love christian metal.......2007-01-12
These guys are awesome, it is so cool that you can still have insane music without all the bad stuff. The lead vocalist has the best range of growls and screams that I have heard from any band, if you can scream try doing what he does and youll see what I mean. The guitarists and drummer are very skilled, great breakdowns. Probably the most skilled metalcore band I know, Norma Jean is also a great christian band.
Some Good Metalcore to Add to Your Collection.......2006-10-17
I ran across this name a few times from a few ads and I wanted to see what all the talk was about. So, later that day, I checked out their Myspace, and I was very intrigued. Metalcore has quickly become an outdated genre due to it's lack of integrity and originality, but I'll listen to anything with a beat before pre-judging. With sick, versatile breakdowns, sweet and subtle refrains, flavorful electronic synths, and a benevolent contrast between melody and aggression, The Devil Wears Prada hits hard with their first full-length.
TDWP has a way of making their contrasts in sound so obvious and blatant that the listener doesn't even expect it. Sounds almost like an oxy moron doesn't it? Well, sorry, but I'm dead serious. The vocal ranges are incredible creating variety and versatility between songs (check out "Gauntlet of Solitude" and "Rosemary had an Accident" to witness the best ranges) also lacking the monotnous waves developed by the standard hardcore savant. As far as the melodic vocals go, they aren't weak by any sense but provide a sensitivity similar to the likes of Underoath (check out "Swords, Dragons & Diet Coke" and "Dogs Can Grow Beards All Over").
The guitars work well with each other but, at times, fail to fill the void in between the hooks and breakdowns. If the guitars worked better separately or at least in the transitions, then this would be an album for the taking. The clean-work is good, though. They definitely work well with the synth ("Who Speaks Spanish, Colon Quesadilla") to infer stable electronic refrains.
The drums could definitely use some better double bass work, but have unbelievable potential. I felt like I was waiting a lot for a heavy in-your-face metal disastrous drumline, but they took a while to get there. Oh well, that was there purpose I guess, but I can appreciate a good drumline when I hear one. They play as a good backbone, though, for sure, especially during the breakdowns and transitions ("Modify the Pronunciation"). As for the bassline, it is almost unnoticable, but plays an important part in adding a thump to the drumline (it's main purpose for hardcore/metalcore music).
"Dear Love..." is one of the best and most talked-of debut full-lengths of the year. The Devil Wears Prada has great potential. I am definitely relieved I checked out this album. I don't usually listen to ads, but I felt obligated to listen for myself; a good move on my part, I believe.

Wonderful.......2004-12-21
If you love Tudor court music, this is THE CD. I bought mine 13 years ago. A friend heard it and liked it, so I thought I'd see if it was still in print. It will make a sweet gift.
The Cultured Henry.......2004-12-18
Henry VIII, unfortunately, is often perceived as a bloated, irascible boor, with the table manners of starved dog. Overlooked is the athletic and refined young Henry, the idealistic romantic. These songs pay tribute to king as courtier, composer and musician, ranging from instrumentals to sighing expressions of courtly love. Of particular note are the Boleyn love letters, which curiously ended up in the Vatican. Unfortunately, none of the Queen's letters to her husband survive (the authenticity of the 'Tower' letter is in doubt).
Rather than performing "Chapel Royal" music, this CD focusses on Henry's own works, which show surprising talent. He sang countertenor (odd for such an imposing figure), and played flute, viol, virginal, and lute; no wonder he found Anne Boleyn, herself an accomplished musician and composer, a perfect counterpart. Some selections are Henry's adaptations of contemporary works, but most are original: one can imagine the couple performing and laughing together on intimate evenings.
The love letters are fascinating. As in the vocals, pronunciation approximates sixteenth century English. Notwithstanding the German accent, I still noticed some small flaws: the 'r's are not fully rolled on the tongue, nor are vowels consistently emphasized (early modern English was more phonetic than modern). I also noted unusual French pronunciations, although I suspect the differences were more obvious than is apparent here. Small quibble -- at least it's not modern!
This is a fascinating CD, both in terms of listening pleasure and historical interest.
If love now reigned, as it hath been..........2001-04-17
This is a very good selection of the music of the Tudor king, Henry VIII. The Isaak Ensemble, a German group that specializes in music of the Renaissance, has done a fabulous job of bringing the music of King Henry VIII to light. Renaissance music has a sound that is all its own, much unlike Baroque or Classical music, and deserves to be heard. This CD also contains the love letters of Henry VIII to his wife, Anne Boleyn, spoken aloud in the original Renaissance English or French. The speaker has a heavy German accent that may or may not distract, but in the end it does not matter as the material matters more then the speaking style.

From boredom to epiphany.......2001-11-24
If you've ever seen Dancer in the Dark, you may as well consider this its unofficial soundtrack. At times you wonder WHEN the theme will alter itself so you can be reassured that your CD is not skipping. And other times you become so lost in the beauty of the sounds that you could listen to it forever. I recommend that you listen to the album at least once through before buying it, because once may be enough, or a hundred listens may just get you started.
Mind-blowing.......2001-08-08
This re-defines Sakamoto for me. I had come to know this man as a talented musician who fell into a rut of writing second-rate pop tunes. Discord has turned everything on its head for me. Sakamoto is more than talented; in fact, he's more than a genius. He is a visionary.
This CD absolutely must be listened to all the way through right away. Set aside an hour of your time - you will not regret doing so. Grief will cause you sheer emotional anguish, Anger will [enrage you], Prayer will lift your eyes up, and Salvation will bring your soul and spirit up. This isn't religious music, but it speaks to our inner selves. In other words, it does what the greatest art is supposed to do: change us. Makes us learn and become better people.
So buy this CD. It rises above all the garbage that has come out in recent times. This is art in its truest and most beautiful form.
Amazing CD.......2000-10-20
This is a fantasic work, and this says a lot. I am not a big DJ Spooky fan, nor am I particularly fond of Ryuichi Sakamoto's pop music. But he certainly hit the nail on the head with Discord. In order to fully appreciate this album, you need to put aside an hour of your time, and listen to the CD from start to finish. It contains the most captivating melodies, beautiful contrasts, and truly mature, creative songwriting on the part of Sakamoto. This CD is proof that there is hope for a successful union of the classical and electronic worlds.
ATTN: Spooky fans!.......2000-07-10
If you love Spookys twisted and dark sounds, then you should check out this disc. I found it very easy to just play the disc, all the way through without getting restless. Tracks #2,4,5 have a unique and captive sound. These were my favourites from this selection. If your in the need to add some DJ Spooky to your diet, check this out...

Another, more unknown side, of King Henry VIII.......2006-02-08
Mention King Henry VIII and most of us picture a bloated King Bluebeard, grossly fat, surrounded by luxury, gazing at the world through small piggy eyes and a pursed mouth. He disposed of his wives and courtiers when they became inconvenient, and married four times in just over eleven years, with two of his wives being executed for treason and adultery.
But there is another side to this rather gory picture of a murderous king. Henry VIII was one of the most artistic of the Renaissance kings. He adored spectacle, and loved to take part in masques -- a form of staged entertainment with costumes, set pieces and music that had a theme, drawn from classical or folkloric literature. He also wrote quite a few ballads, and love songs, as well as music that is classified as a consort -- music that was instrumental, perhaps played as part of a masque or to dance to.
In All Goodly Sports the group Sirinu takes the known songs and compositions of King Henry VIII and gathers it all together into a lovely collection of English Renaissance courtly music. Sirinu is a group of five musicians, who provide the vocals and play a variety of period instruments, from woodwinds, strings, percussion and keyboards. The various vocal pieces are interspersed with the 'consorts' -- short, instrumental breaks, all taken together in a long, smooth progression. That's one of the drawbacks of this cd, that many of these compositions are less than a minute or two long, with only a few of the ballads lasting longer than three minutes.
This is a rather amazing collection of songs and verses. Sirinu, with guest tenor Hugh Wilson, gives it all much verve and style. The liner notes give some details on the history of the manuscript that these compositions were found in . Included in the notes -- which are written in French, English and German -- are the lyrics, which are transcribed into the same languages. Most of the ballads are in English, with several that were originally in French. While there are translations, sadly, most of the background on the instruments and songs are lacking, so to figure out some of the more obscure terms, a hunt through a book on Renaissance and medieval music is required.
For those who enjoy music from the Renaissance, this is a must have for a collection. It gives a well rounded look at the music of Henry VIII's court, and evokes the romance and elegance of the period. Happily recommended.
Good King Harry's Musical Hits!.......2002-09-06
The perfect background music for your next royal banquet or joust! Many people forget that Henry Tudor was an accomplished musician and this CD captures that very well. A welcome and novel addition to your classical collection.

Customer Reviews:
Depends on music taste.......2006-02-21
For me this cd wasen't really that good. The tracks on the cd describes the music but personaly I think the album was too monotone and dull especially the track Grief. The second track Anger is too noisy and in Salvation you hear a dialogue. I like fare better his other works like (Rain, A day a Gorilla.., Acceptance and Merry Christmas...)
So if you like his more known works from films I would not buy this cd unless I first had listened to it.
And if you need a track like Anger try the soundtrack (Requiem for a Dream) instead.
Embrace.......2000-11-28
Sakamoto embraces a world of feelings here. You can sit and listen, you will become anger or prayer. The music swallows you up like an torrenting ocean of warm rain. You can't do anything but let it wash over you.
Power in Simplicity - simply beautiful.......2000-10-23
In 'Discord', Ryuichi Sakamoto captures Grief, Anger, Prayer and Salvation in haunting, searching instrumentals. 'Grief' is simply beautiful - the despair in the violins' cry counterpointed by the attempted consolation of the bass - the redoubled cries of the violins - you get the idea... 'Anger' is disjointed, aimless, powerful, then rythmic, then chaotic - I wouldn't like to see it's creator in a bad mood!! Probably the least accessible track on the album... but then again this is not an album made to be _completely_ accessible. 'Prayer' depicts a search for peace - a combination of tired bass and questioning oboe - with supportive piano and horn as the track progresses and uplifts a little... 'Salvation' begins with what sounds like a recording of a support group - sometimes this can be irksome, but Sakamoto uses the murmuring with a wave-like effect which builds expectancy for what is to come - a revisiting of the earlier themes in a more structured, peaceful composition, punctuated by poetic ramblings - the original melody from 'Grief' is reproduced, with the edge taken off with more instruments supporting the violins and a slight change in tone - a fitting and satisfactory conclusion to the album.
This is musical visualisation - occasionally whimsical, occasionally profound, always entertaining and thought-provoking.
Sakamoto creates an exquisite sound space.......2000-02-11
With or without viewing the visual components of the enhanced CD, a listener will be swept away by these four very different movements. The enhanced graphics when viewed on a computer only add to the experience. This CD is truly transcendent, one of my favorites.
Very Sakamoto.......1998-11-28
As you can expect this is an excelent work of Mr. Sakamoto. Always different and eclectic but once you hear this, you really will like it.

Selective Tastes.......2005-10-08
This is a heavily "themed" collection, the theme being the English social-religious crisis of 1605. The thematic culmination is "Master Tresham," a contemporary (drawn from period sources) concert piece--evocative, original, striking, doubtless powerful in concert, but listenable on a CD perhaps once. Buy the CD instead for William Byrd's Four Voice Mass--an "early music" reading, pitched low sung edgily, evoking its contemporary seditiousness--stands the hair on end. Buy it also for Byrd's "Civitas sancti tui," the final proof of how disciplined, taut, and yet at the same moment heartbreakingly emotional this music can be.

An Extraordinary User-Friendly Multimedia Dvorák Biography.......2004-04-28
I have followed with interest the series of CDs explaining popular operas by Jeremy Siepmann, an American musicologist long resident in Britain. Each of those is a single CD with a spoken text interspersed with longish excerpts from the opera in question. This 4-CD set, though, is something else again. It is a combination of music/audio CDs with superimposed CD-ROM material (on the same discs). One plays the audio portion on your regular stereo equipment. When put in your PC or Mac CD drive, the CD-ROM portion of the discs brings up an extensive set of hyperlinked text materials as well as links to the CDs from which the musical examples are taken (all from the Naxos music recordings library, of course). Also included in the CD-ROM material is the full text of Siepmann's detailed biography of Dvorák. There is also a thick booklet that includes cast lists (various actors playing various important people in Dvorák's life), an extensive essay about the sociopolitical and cultural conditions extant during Dvorák's life, an longish essay about his major works and their significance, a graded listening plan, an article outlining recommended reading, biographical snippets about each of the important people in Dvorák's life, a chronological calendar of Dvorák's life, and an extensive glossary of musical and other pertinent terms.
Siepmann's four-and-a-half-hour exploration of Dvorák's life and works is in his wonted polished, often witty, prose. It is read gracefully by Siepmann himself. Dvorák is played by the suave-voiced British actor, Sean Barrett. The musical examples are extensive, often including complete movements, arias, etc., and are placed expertly within the flow of the text. Production values for this budget-priced set are quite high.
I will admit that I had a particular interest in this production as I grew up in a rural Oklahoma town settled by Bohemians (Czechs) and came to love some of Dvorák's music before even that of Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. I've already recommended this set to the public schools and town library in my hometown.
I am not quite sure who the intended audience for this set is. Presumably there are those, like me, who are insatiable when it comes to increasing their knowledge of classical music, its composers and their sociocultural milieu. One also imagines that even in these days of decreasing support for music and music appreciation courses in our schools, there are teachers who could make wonderful use of this material for their students. Whoever the audience is, I cannot imagine a listener coming away from this set without a great deal more information and appreciation for the genius of Antonin Dvorák.
Recommended.
