The premier stage composer of his time, Stephen Sondheim has also contributed a substantial body of work to the big and small screens, explored in this 65-minute collection by the Varèse Sarabande stable of artists. The best known is Warren Beatty's 1990 live-action cartoon Dick Tracy, which won Sondheim an Oscar for "Sooner or Later" (covered here by Ally McBeal's Jane Krakowski). This CD includes "Back in Business" as well as the three songs also released on Madonna's movie tie-in album. Other rarities include "Dawn" and "Sand" from the unproduced film project Living Out Loud, the revised version of "The Glamorous Life" written for the 1978 feature film, and "It Takes All Kinds" from The Bird Cage. Orchestral selections include three suites taken from the film score of Stavisky and the gorgeous ballad "Goodbye for Now" from Reds. The major piece here is five songs written for the 1967 television drama Evening Primrose and covered by golden-voiced Liz Callaway and Gary Beach. The recording may not have the star power of an earlier recording by Mandy Patinkin and Bernadette Peters, but it's simply and effectively performed here. --David Horiuchi
Customer Reviews:
What can you lose?.......2000-01-29
Sondheim's little-known work for the big and small screen get presented in this enjoyable compilation. Fans of Sondheim's stage work might be extremely surprised to find the master trying his hand at several pop-flavored tunes. Gary Beach and Liz Callaway do a magnificent job with the four songs from "Evening Primrose" (and is my preference over Mandy Patinkin's over-hysterical rendition with Bernadette Peters), with particular beauty found in the stunning duet "When?"
Sondheim even tries the cheesy disco thing, with "It Takes All Kinds", cut from "The Birdcage". A more thrilling piece of ear candy has never been heard. Although the movie version of "Glamorous Life" can be heard on one or two other compilations and the movie soundtrack, this is one of the best.
I wish the album was truly comprehensive (tracks which have gotten more exposure, such as "Sooner or Later" "Can That Boy Foxtrot" and "Water Under the Bridge" are omitted), but the gems it contains more than compensates. An important album in any Sondheim fan's collection
Pleasant overall, with some invaluable rarities.......1999-05-07
The best moments from this umpteenth collection of music by Broadway supercomposer Stephen Sondheim are the (remarkably dissimilar) selections from 1990's "Dick Tracy" and the obscure 1960's TV musical "Evening Primrose," some of which have never before been recorded. Other items are less memorable, including some regrettable disco/80's pop pastiches from "Singing Out Loud" and "The Birdcage." The selections from "A Little Night Music" and "Stavisky" received sharper performances in the original soundtrack recordings ("The Glamorous Life" can be found appended to the newly remastered Sony/Columbia recording of "Night Music"s original cast; the complete soundtrack to "Stavisky" is available packaged with the must-have 1985 concert recording of "Follies."). This CD should be invaluable to avid Sondheim collectors for the "Primrose" numbers, dynamically sung by Gary Beach and Liz Callaway. Those less fanatic will probably find this a pleasant and workmanlike, but not particularly outstanding recording.

Customer Reviews:
Amateur at best.......2004-03-07
There is very little to like about this CD. First of all, I enjoy professional recordings; this CD had minor imperfections in the sound quality. Second, the choir was entirely forgettable. Finally, I purchased the CD for Randall Thompson's "Last words of David"... and could distinctly hear intonation problems.
Not my cup of tea...
The Horror..........2002-09-13
I don't guess I appreciate the amateur massed-choral milieu. I adore Welsh choral music, but I was definitely disappointed by this CD. The recordings are live concert recordings, with all the inherent problems and inconsistencies found therein. Also, the choirs presented here are definitely NOT professional level choruses. They are consistent with the tenor/bass sections of a pretty good church choir (without any ringers or paid section leaders). The limited artistic abilities of these choruses and the poor recording qualities do not do justice to the beauty of the compositions.
Truly Glorious.......2000-04-15
I listen to a lot of music (have season tickets to both Opera and Symphony) and this is one of the best CD's I've ever bought. The voices are outstanding throughout, and the songs themselves are wonderful. While I have a bent towards the classical, this is a recording that would please anyone. (I'm buying another one for my cousin! )

Customer Reviews:
The best dancealbum that I know.......2003-02-23
If you like any kind of Dance-music this is for you. Even if you like Pop you may also like this. It's not so important that Nicci Juice's voice sounds like it has been changed with the computer or if she wrote the songs or not. It's just fun.
INTRODUCING ROLLERGIRL: A low voice introduces us to the album.
MAKE MY DAY: Nice Dancesong but not the best.
YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE DANcING: That's my favourite. Each song on the CD reminds me of a hot summerday with a cool breeze but this one a little bit more. Irresistible tune.
LUV U MORE: Almost as good as the preview song. I like the video wich was made in Manhattan.
NOW IT'S THE TIME: Good song with great lyrics. You should take your life in your own hand and make your dreams come true now.
OLE OLE SINGING OLE OLA: I know the title sounds stupid but It's a good song. More pop than dance.
IT'S A FINE DAY: Super reminds me of YMMFLD.
KEEP ON ROLLIN': This one had to grow on me.
DEAR JESSIE: Her Debutsingle is a great Madonna-Cover. I think it's better than the original version.
ROLLERGIRL: Instrumental. Let's dance!
LICHT UND FARBEN (Light and colors). It must feel like this when you're on XTC. Trance at its best.
GOODBYE: (Outro) This instrumentalpiece is the only one without Beat. Perfect Chilloutmusic.
LUV U MORE (Green court RMX) and DEAR JESSIE (Mark Oh' RMX). Nice but the Orininal versions are better.
Girl on rollerskates wih lots of hits!!.......2002-03-25
I was first introduced to Rollergirl when "Dear Jessie," a German trancey, techno remake of the Madonna hit, was released as a single in the UK. Rollergirl is a lovely, blond girl from Germany who always sings her songs (at rather a high pitch) on rollerskates. Always keen to listen to any dance music coming from Germany, I was persuaded to buy her album, which I would describe as an above average example of the Euro-dance music, that we get so much of these days. Some of the tracks on it are a little typical of bands like the Vengaboys, particularly "Now It's The Time" and "Ole Ole Singin Ole Ola," but most of the album is definitely of a much higher quality, particularly the second half of the album from "Dear Jessie" onwards. "Licht und Farben," in particular, is a good example of chart-friendly, easy-going trance music. If you're after an example of good quality Euro-pop music then you couldn't do much better than to try Rollergirl's album.
Energetic, Unstoppable Hit Dance Album!!.......2001-12-23
For one of the best dance albums to be released, I have to give kudos to Rollergirl with her 1999 recording titled "Now I'm Singin'...." This album is intensely original and fun, with trancy, bouncy sounds and Rollergirl's silly, but effective voice. Sure, she doesn't have the best voice out there. Afterall, which dance artists really have awesome voices?? But hers works with the sound effects and trance-energy permeating the album. I have to say that there is not one faulty track on here, and that is saying a lot. Adding to the entire "personality" of this album is the slightest hint of Rollergirl's German accent. Dance fans who haven't discovered this artist or any of her consecutive singles have really missed out. Charming and affable, this girl makes the music even more enjoyable. My favorite song on "Now I'm Singin...." is for sure OLE OLE SINGIN OLE OLA(#6). An odd blend of Caribbean steel drum beats and the Vengaboys classic WE'RE GOING TO IBIZA, this is a magical track that makes you feel relaxed and upbeat. Oddly, enough, instead of singing about "going to Ibiza", she is singing about "going to Mallorca"! Other terrific songs are YOU MAKE ME FEEL LIKE DANCIN(#3), LUV U MORE(#4), DEAR JESSIE(#9) and ROLLERGIRL(#10). Even danceably thirst-quenching is her German song LICHT UND FARBEN(#11), a throw-back to Deutch superstar Blumchen. These are the ones that I feel especially stand-out; however, you really can't go wrong with any of the tracks on here. Definitely an incredible album that is more than worth listen after listen after listen after listen, I can't wait for her next release!
Disappointed........2001-09-18
I was disappointed with this album. The singer is barely audable against the music. Most of it is a cross between Euro-sugar-pop and unashamed self-promotion. The only reason I gave it 3 stars is that I like the beat. If I could mute the singer I would.
Totally Kick A$$.......2001-08-12
This CD is the best ever, my favorites are number 4 and 9, the music moves right through you, and gets you pumped, I bought this cd when I was in germany, when it first came out, I had it for ever, and wore it out, so I bought it again in the states, and re introduced it, I have all my friends into it. and you should be to.
