3 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Re-Creation of Over-Exposed Legrand Material.......2006-02-10

Michel Legrand is one the biggest artists of music entertainment, a sensitive composer and arranger.

Here you'll find a correct selection of Legrand's material with unnecessarily new arrangements though with an impeccable performance.

Many of the songs in the repertoire are still available in CDs you can find here @Amazon and the best Legrand is the original Legrand.

This album stands only for those who doesn't care about original takes and wishes just for a selection of the best Legrand.

5 out of 5 stars "one of the greatest film composers of the 20th Century ~ Michel Legrand".......2005-10-26

Silva Screen has released a collection that will set you on your ear "The Essential Michel Legrand Film Music Collection"...Legrand's score sets the tone and mood you experience a sense of power and freedom, so exhilarating...Legrand's genius in composition and orchestration, puts the listener smack dab in the middle of each film he scores as it serves up a generous helping of heaven for all "film-score-buff" collectors

Michel Legrand was born in Paris on February 24th, 1932...attended the Paris Conservatory Progressing...worked in various jazz bands, later a staff arranger and composer...an orchestrator in the '50s...scored films in the early '60s with "THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG" (1964)..."THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR" (1968)..."THE GO-BETWEEN" (1970)..."SUMMER OF '42" (1971)..."THE THREE MUSKETEERS" (1973)...and three Oscars from the Academy Awards for "THE WINDMILLS OF YOUR MIND" for best music and original song in 1969 , "SUMMER OF '42" for best original song and original dramatic score in 1972... "YENTL for best music and original song score in 1984...then in 2003 nominated for Broadway's Tony Awards for Best Original Music Score for the Musical "Amour", there's no letting up for this hard working composer.

The Flemish Radio Orchestra featuring conductor composer Michel Legrand on piano and harpsichord, Philippe Chayeb on bass, Thierry Chauvet on drums and Bruno Caviglia on guitar...all in all did a magnificent job in bringing the music of a composer who wrote for a multitude of films, receiving recognition from the industry and fans which is long over-due ~ his work is in constant demand.

This collection contains an overlay of each cue in Legrand's distinctive style of legendary scoring ~ the man who made this possible, a tremendous asset to every project he undertakes is Reynold da Silva [executive producer of the album] ~ symphonic suites with full orchestra fullfilling the "film-score-buffs" cravings for more of the same, just the way we like 'em!

Donna Summer was disco's queen, but the general consensus in 1979 when the diva and her longtime producer-Svengali Giorgio Moroder came up with this seminal work was that "disco sucks." Anyway, that was the perspective in rock circles. Bad Girls, however, overcame great resistance to earn both critical and popular success. Originally released as a two-record set, Bad Girls is a concept album about--what else?--S-E-X. The album saw the dynamic duo incorporating rock influences into their disco motifs ("Hot Stuff," the title track), and, in turn, influencing dance music for years to come. The ballads, meanwhile demonstrated that Summer really could sing. The rock sound became even more pronounced on the next two LPs--The Wanderer and She Works Hard for the Money. Bad Girls, however, was Summer's first step toward artistic respectability. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars Donna's Tour De Force.......2007-01-17

NOTE: I also posted this review under the Bad Girls, Remastered Deluxe Edition.

It is rare when an album finds itself to claim both artistic aclaim, and commercial appeal. For Dona Summer, Bad Girls remains her singature, blockbuster album, that not only broke the chart barriers of it's time, but set the stage for the female superstars of the 80's (not that ANY of them have ever given Donna her just props).

The made for radio tracks of sides 1 & 4 took the world by storm, and Hot Stuff made belivers even from the Disco Sucks crowd. Bad Girls took some by surprise with it's very direct lyrics about the Ladies of The Night, but it became her first song to top both the Pop and R & B charts at the same time.
These 2 tracks together with side 2 opener, Dim All The Lights remain highlights of her stage shows to this day.

Side 2 & 3 focused on Donna as a singer-songwriter, and the easy Pop Songs of side 2 flowed into the beautiful ballads of side 3, There Will Always Be A You being the stunner, and side 3 closed out with her Janis Joplin tribute, My Baby Understands.

Side 4 finds us back at the Disco, with Our Love, Sunset People and Lucky. These tracks easily transport us back to 1979, yet they remain fresh and vibrant today.

Bad Girls remains the 'brass ring" in Donna's career, every artist should be as fortunate to have one.

5 out of 5 stars Donna Summer: BAD GIRLS (1979).......2006-11-16

In May of 1979, Donna Summer released eighth album entitled, BAD GIRLS. This album really goes deeper and deeper into that of the Disco era. This is a classic album, and it is one of my all-time favorite Donna Summer albums.

HOT STUFF
The first single from the album. This is a classic song, fusing both Rock and Disco. This is a great song, and it makes me really let loose on the dance floor when I hear it played at parties.

BAD GIRLS
The second single from the album. This track is, obviously and without a doubt, the album's title track. If you all didn't know it already, this song is about female prostitutes. This is a classic song.

LOVE WILL ALWAYS FIND YOU
Hate it.

WALK AWAY
The sixth & final single from the album. This is another great song.

DIM ALL THE LIGHTS
The third single from the album. Awesome tune. It's a song that I could listen to over and over again.

JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF YOUR HEART
Awesome song.

ONE NIGHT IN A LIFETIME
Great song.

CAN'T GET TO SLEEP AT NIGHT
Another great song, and this is a song that I can relate to, for there are nights when I have some serious trouble getting to sleep.

ON MY HONOUR
Great song.

THERE WILL ALWAYS BE A YOU
Great song.

ALL THROUGH THE NIGHT
Great song. Just to give you all a reminder, especially all of you Cyndi Lauper fans, Cyndi Lauper did not cover this song.

MY BABY UNDERSTANDS
Great song.

OUR LOVE
The fourth single from the album. Great song.

LUCKY
Awesome. To clear up some information to all of you Britney Spears fans, Britney Spears did not cover this song.

SUNSET PEOPLE
The fifth single from the album. Awesome song.

This is one of Donna Summer's greatest albums. I could listen to this album all night. This is a great album, and all of you Donna Summer fans should already own a copy.

5 out of 5 stars Single Most Important Black Female Singer In History.......2006-04-05

This was truly a masterpiece for it's time, and still holds up today as an ultimate showcase for one singer's multi-faceted talent. It should be noted that Donna Summer holds the record for having released 4 gold double-album sets in a row; ONCE UPON A TIME, LIVE & MORE, BAD GIRLS, and ON THE RADIO. THE WANDERER album came next before another double-album was set for release (I'M A RAINBOW), but pulled and replaced with the Quincy Jones-produced DONNA SUMMER album. I'M A RAINBOW finally was released and again was a grand mixture of several genres of music, again showcasing her vocal abilities. No record collection is complete without BAD GIRLS and I'M A RAINBOW in it. And also... ON THE RADIO.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of all time, period.......2005-12-21

Call it whatever you want - disco, funk, soul, rock, pop - BAD GIRLS is Donna Summer's best album, and noting that she had a run of four multi-platinum DOUBLE-ALBUMS (who else can say that in music history?), that's really sayin' something. Bottom line: even through I love punk to house to electro to country to soul and all in between, BAD GIRLS is probably the album that I've played the most out of any other title - why? There's not one weak cut on this ambitious, flawless, varied opus, as Donna (armed with Moroder's peerless production/studio skill and great hooks) tackles disco, ballads, rock, country, and even proto-house (New Order stole OUR LOVE to make BLUE MONDAY, hello?!) and never misses a beat or breaks a sweat. Is there a better voice in all of pop music? I can't think of it, I'm gonna go listen to DIM ALL THE LIGHTS again and twirl around in the dark.

5 out of 5 stars DISCO PAR EXCELLANCE.......2005-12-21

This is one of the great treasures of the disco era along with Chic's "Risque" and is proof that disco could be a winning and respectable art form if placed in the right hands.
Bad Girls has a smorgasboard of classic songs and the thing that stands out for me is that Donna Summer didn't have to borrow or sample someone else's melody in order to achieve a hit.
This is the real thing laced with the distinct dignity of being totally created by the artists on the cover as opposed to the unethical standards of today that somehow have become acceptable.
"Hot Stuff" is fiery disco coated with a scintillating rock edge and "Bad Girls" struts with funky groove attitude.
Donna Summer also displays her talent for songwriting on the sensitive and sensual "Dim all the Lights" which starts out as a breezy ballad then explodes into a disco stompdown.
There's a little bit of country flavor on the tender ballad "On my Honour" and a taste of rock crunch in "My Baby understands".
I also love Donna's delicate spoken intro to the heart melting ballad "All through the night" because it feels like she's talking right to you.
Donna Summer had that kind of sincerity and intimacy in her performances that made you fall in love with her from the get go.
Donna Summer ends the album with three dance scorchers starting with the pulsating seductive declaration of "Our Love" which slides right into the enchanting hypnotic harmony of "Lucky" then slams into the finish line with the Harold Faltermeier co written adrenaline frenzied rush of "Sunset People".
Donna Summer is at her absolute peak here handling country, disco, and rock with the utmost ease and with a winning musical sophistication.
The production of Giorgio Moroder is fantastic and i especially love the slick way one song segue ways into another.
For example, the playful "Love will always find you" grooves along in its saxophone melody then suddenly stops and the cool mysterious "Walk Away" kicks right in and it just sounds so tight.
"Bad Girls" is an absolute wild enchanting sexy sensual tour de force that will sink under your skin and make your blood boil and get your feet grooving.
So click that button and give in to this Bad Girl because deep down you know you want it.

With a spirit of innocence and excitement, no audible breaks of register, and perfect diction, Dawn Upshaw graces us with a satisfying crossover recording in which each song is a fully realized musical monologue. The eclectic and infrequently performed repertoire, from Bernstein, Blitzstein, Sondheim, and Weill, compliments her charm and interpretive acuity. There's her humorous "Saga of Jenny," her adorable "That's Him," her poignant "Like It Was," and her freshly vibrant "I Feel Pretty." Conductor Eric Stern is divine in his arrangements and accompaniment. This is one of the best musical theater albums available. --Barbara Eisner Bayer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Crossover at Its Best.......2006-11-15

"I Wish It So" is the CD that first introduced the exceptional "crossover" talents of soprano Dawn Upshaw. The album, which comprises (mostly) little-heard songs by Kurt Weill, Marc Blitzstein, Leonard Bernstein, and Stephen Sondheim, opens with the title number, a lyrical gem from Blitzstein's JUNO, and continues with Sondheim's vibrant "There Won't Be Trumpets," in which Upshaw, rather than belting, lets her voice ring. She then slam-dunks Sondheim's "What More Do I Need," a truly raucous number. Other highlights include the two songs from Weill's LADY IN THE DARK: the haunting ballad "My Ship" and the witty "The Saga of Jenny," presented here in a superb jazz arrangement. The sound of Upshaw's lower middle voice in this number is thrilling. Her combining of Blizstein's "Never Get Lost" and Sondheim's soaring, life-affirming "Take Me to the World" is perfect, as is her musical yet emotional rendition of "Like It Was" from Sondheim's MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG. The album climaxes with the mock-coloratura aria "Glitter and Be Gay" from Bernstein's CANDIDE, in which Upshaw scales the heights with consistently pure and beautiful tone. In a day when many great opera singers attempt, unsuccessfully, to sing "popular" song, "I Wish It So" is an example of crossover at its very best. It is a CD that no one who loves both opera and musicals should miss.

5 out of 5 stars If Dawn Upshaw had made only one album..........2006-08-24

I have a weak spot for crossover albums by opera stars, which can often be train wrecks or embarrissing self-parodies. There's not a cringe-worthy note in this one, however. Dawn Upshaw has never been as vibrant on disc, and her style in pop music (albeit serious pop music) surpasses expectations. She is a master at touching vulnerability and stars-in-her-eyes vulnerability. There's no current Broadway star who can match her in any of these songs form Sondheim, Weill, and Bernstein, certainly not for sheer beauty of voice and charm. Upshaw went on to make an excellent album of Rodgers and Hart songs, but nothing else quite matches this first effort.

5 out of 5 stars Great songs by a better than average singer. Buy It........2006-04-24

'I Wish It So' sung by popular / classical switch hitter, Dawn Upshaw is a very, very good interpretation of classical American musical theatre pieces by four masters of the genre, Leonard Bernstein (music), Marc Blitzstein (lyrics), Stephen Sondheim (lyrics) and Kurt Weill (music). As I am most familiar with female interpretations of Kurt Weill's songs, especially by the likes of his widow, Lotte Lenya and Weill interpreter extraordinare, Ute Lemper, I have to say that while Upshaw does them justice, she does ont outshine the very best Weill interpretations. Primarily, I believe she suffers from never actually performing the works on stage, as Lenya has.

And, since Ute Lemper did an album with a similar collection of songs (Illusions) from Sondheim and others, I thing Lemper still has the edge on interpreting other composers as well.

On the positive side, I find Upshaw's interpretation as good or better than almost everyone else who makes a career out of these songs, such as, dare I say it, Barbra Streisand. This is a good thing, because I believe Upshaw is not up to the very best mezzos who share her classical works. She can't hold a candle, for example, to Renee Fleming or Anne Sofie von Otter, although her interpretations of Weill are as good as von Otter, just not as good as Lenya and Lemper.

A very, very nice album if you like female vocalists.

5 out of 5 stars A must album for all musical theatre lovers........2005-04-21

Dawn Upshaw once again disproves the adage that opera singers can't sing showtunes properly. Her diction, her ability to act out the lyrics and her crystal clear angel-like voice are just heavenly. Miss Upshaw could teach quite a few Broadway and Cabaret singers a thing or two about interpretation and she would have her hands full teaching opera singers like Te Kanawa or Fleming how to put over a showtune properly. Simply divine!

5 out of 5 stars Timeless recording.......2004-07-20

This is an endlessly rewarding album by an operatic soprano who demonstrates an expressiveness and range rare in crossover albums of this sort. Upshaw modifies her classical technique without compromising it, narrating with a conversational tone and youthful ebullience well-suited to musical theater. She continues her tradition of championing obscure American art songs with three gorgeous Blitzstein pieces, and wisely avoids the standard, overdone Sondheim showpieces in favor of several gorgeous lesser-known songs. "I Feel Pretty" is given a refreshing makeover, while "Glitter and Be Gay" demonstrates both her impressive vocal control and comedic prowess. Despite the odd choice of "There Won't Be Trumpets", which demands a belter to properly execute the climax, this album is a well-conceived and cohesive collection that becomes more enjoyable on each subsequent listen.

Beautiful music. It sets a mood throughout that is rather sad no matter what the words say.

5 out of 5 stars A beautiful achievement .......2006-02-25

The excelent Milos Forman timepiece on the 20's based on the Doctorow novel has a marvelous musical translation in this soundtrack close to perfection. It gets the time and mood of the movie, and reflects its main dramatic moments. I would dare to say that this soundtrack is one of the finest coming out from a movie of the 80's. Besides, it sounds great in this digitally remastered version. Do not hesitate to get it. It's a real beauty.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant........2005-12-28

I first came across this soundtrack when looking for Donald O'Connor songs - I'm a big fan of his, and I'm trying to track down all the songs he's ever recorded. It just so happens he has one of the most delightful songs on this soundtrack, "I could love a Million Girls". Apparently it's from a Disney film called Summer Magic, but I don't think Disney would approve of how dirty this song is if you think about it! Donald O'Connor was around 55 or so when he recorded this song, so his voice isn't as great as it was once, but he still does a fantastic job.

Now, onto the other songs. "Ragtime" (the song listed on the soundtrack) is hauntingly beautiful - it really captures the feeling and mood of the time, and puts you right back there. Same with most of the other "score" tracks. This is definately one of the best scores out there, and it's a pity it didn't do better. I guess it's almost ahead of it's time a little, considering this was the time period that gave us films like The Blues Brothers and other such early SNL comedies which didn't require scores like Ragtime needed. It really should've done better, but for now enjoy the soundtrack because I doubt you'll get another release of it!

5 out of 5 stars Dance Queen knows how to Rock.......2007-02-18

1979 had the war between Rock'N'Roll and Disco in full force, and this album made Donna Summer one of the few artists(Blondie, Rod Stewart, Rolling Stones)crossing both lines. The album leads with "Hot Stuff," a rock and disco classic where Summer sings with gritty desperation accompanied by the guitar riffs of Doobie Brothers member Jeff Baxter. "Dim All the Lights" is a personal favorite with Donna's soaring vocals and slow intro that builds into an explosive dance melody. Summer delivers powerhouse vocals with a rock groove on "Journey to the Center of Your Heart," while "Sunset People" contains a robotic beat flavored with rock and defines the lifestyle of the whole disco era. The album also has some slower, softer songs with "There Will Always Be A You," as one of the album's best songs. The second disc is the bonus material, and worth every penny as it features the remastered versions of Donna's best-known 12 inch mixes, including the fabulous "MacArthur Park Suite" from the Live & More album. Donna Summer closed the decade proving she was one singer who could groove and rock at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars THE Donna Summer 2-CD Set.......2007-02-10

For anyone that needs to take Miss Donna Summer with them to the end of their days, this is the Cd 2-disc collection to pick up. You postively cannot go wrong. For diversity, try her other merchandise, but there will still be a gap without this digipack remastered special.
The I FEEL LOVE extended version I have heard before in The Casablanca Story, but for pure I FEEL LOVE camp, the Patrick Cowley 15 minute electro wild mix is definitely off the top. Amazon has it under the GRAND 12-INCHES collection. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars W O W WORD FOR BETTER THAN A MASTERPIECE?.......2006-09-02

I must say kudos to Frankie B for his review for I cannot extrapolate more except to say: this remaster is so on target - as this project was when it was released. In some ways, it sounds better today then the year it was released. We can listen and almost hear the lack of brilliance that we have not heard in the years since the original release - and nothing is as pure, honest and rocking than this Donna release. It may be discofied, however I stand by my initial feeling as a kid - this is a rock and roll masterpiece. The remastering is frightening - the clarity makes you TURN IT UP and it sounds great LOUD LOUD LOUD. Remember in the 80s - artists would always have printed on their sleeves "Play It Loud" ? Well - Donna Summer did not need that on this originally or certainly upon this remastered release. However, I am telling you - play this LOUD and relish in the aural confection of the genius of Donna, Pete and Giorgio
EXHILERATING.

5 out of 5 stars Donna perpetuates her winning stride!.......2005-07-13

Just prior to the album's release in May of 1979, Donna was quickly becoming one of the most prominent and important artist of that time. Following a series of highly successful singles and gold albums, LIVE AND MORE gave the artist her first number one album in 1978, coinciding with the massive success of the "MacArthur Park" and "Last Dance" singles. When the double album BAD GIRLS was released shortly after, no one could escape the clutches of her music! "Hot Stuff" and "Bad Girls" were inescapable on the airwaves, quickly becoming signature tracks to Donna's ever extensive repertoire. "Dim All the Lights" followed there after in late 1979, solidifying the mass appeal and success this album has come to generate. More than 25 years after its initial release, BAD GIRLS continues strut it stuff with this much deserved deluxe edition release of the album. Although the original album has been beautifully remastered, the second disc seems slightly redundant with the 12 inch mixes, which mostly appear on the DANCE COLLECTION. Nevertheless, it's still worth the time and the investment for the digipack packaging, extensive liner notes, and remasterd sound. Prime Cuts: "Our Love", "Lucky", "There Will Always Be a You", "Love Will Always Find You", "On My Honor", "One Night In A lifetime

5 out of 5 stars Donna's Tour De Force!.......2005-07-11

1 out of 5 stars Lyrical genius? To quote "A Mighty Wind": I don't think so!.......2006-08-01

It has been 7 years since this song came out. No one has really heard from LFO since 2001, either (their second album yielded a minor hit and then crashed). Besides that, the "singer" jumps from one topic to another faster than Dan's father on "Roseanne". What does that tell you? They're destined to become either:
a) a 2-hit wonder group
or b) nominee for "Worst Song of the 90's".
I think they'll have great luck with both. The lyrics are insipid and disposable, and their voices are dull. Not bad, just (incredibly) dull. I'm ashamed that the techno group LFO has to share an artist page with these geeks. Not a good song or group. Sorry, LFO fans.

1 out of 5 stars LFO=crap.......2003-12-10

After Baha Men's "Who Let the Dogs Out", this has to be the worst song ever recorded in the history of music. Horrible, cheesy lyrics and not even catchy poppy music, this song pure sucks.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Song!.......2003-03-26

I think this song was totally awesome. I think LFO is a good band and they write good music. This song tells about a boy named Rich who meets this girl one summer, but then she goes back home and never comes back. This song tells about how he misses her and the things he remembers about her.

4 out of 5 stars This song is great........2002-08-02

To those of you negative people that say this song has absolutely no point.... Your wrong. I like this song because it writes life in a deeper form that some are to airheaded to see. It tells life just how it is with a catchy tune and a smooth voice.

1 out of 5 stars listening to this will lower your IQ.......1999-09-09

what the hell kind of song is this? it makes no sense. a&f? new kids? chinese food? ok...whatever... someone needs to drag whoever wrote this song in the middle of the street and put him out of his misery.

plus those 3 freaks...who are they? lfo?

Music is performed in its original settings. Beautiful choral work; four singers, two of each gender. Lacks the histrionical egotism found in so many Irish ballad recordings. Very much worth it.

E ora? Questo brano è la copia sputata di Jaded. Ripigliatevi, cari Aerosmith, così proprio non va. Cosa ci dobbiamo aspettare a breve? Un duetto con Britney Spears?

'Girls Of Summer' is a great song, Steven Tylers Voice sounds great, Joe Perrys 12 string sounds awesome! Then you get 'Jaded' and you cant go wrong there, and 'Walk This Way' from their 97 tour how cool is that! Awsome single!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Album, but No Vocal Fireworks.......2005-09-20

This is a beautfully rendered album and Joni's voice is pitch perfect. She sings every note as written. But she takes no interpretive chances and there's no vocal fireworks. The real accomplishment here are the splendid arrangements by Jeffrey Osborne and Geoff Love - two men who never met a huge orchestra they didn't like. The lush, layered arrangements are spectacular. The musicians are also first rate and for such a large gathering there's a fantastic cohesiveness. Though her singing is pleasant enough, Joni's voice is basically the 101st instrument in the entire ensemble.

5 out of 5 stars Great Standards!!.......2003-02-15

This is a great album of classic standards with lush orchestrations. Joni's voice is incredibly smooth and expressive and the selections are some of the best of the Jerome Kern era of classic songwriters. My favorite is Imagination. Best version I have ever heard...as a matter of fact many of the tunes are my benchmark arrangements. If you are a fan of the 30's-50's classic love songs and ballads, this is for you!! Great for Valentines Day. Romantic stuff. This was one of my favorite albums on vinyl as a kid. Now I can get the CD. Yeah!

5 out of 5 stars Joni James at Abbey Road!.......2002-07-23

Miss Joni James swept away on a veritable ocean of violins!
This classic LP remastered in pristine sound with tender torch tunes rendered "close to the microphone" by one of the 1950s most popular singing icons. Recorded in London at the famous Abbey Road studios with those lush, sweeping Acquaviva arrangements. Joni's most divine moment! (Tacked on to the original album are 6 tracks, also with the 100 Strings orchestra, of songs from her Jimmy McHugh tribute LP.)
