5 out of 5 stars A companion piece.......2007-05-08

This CD is basically a companion piece to Joe Boyd's book of the same name containing key selections of the bands he produced / managed. Joe Boyd was an American who helped shape the careers of Fairport Convention, Sandy Denny, Nick Drake, The Incredible String Band, Pink Floyd and others by being a great producer and even greater manger with enough understanding about the music biz and the musicians under his Witchseason Productions company. I could go on but if your interested into what was happening in swinging London during the mid to late 60's than get this along with Boyd's book and you can have fun with a "six-degrees-of-separation" involving key players in the music business of the 1960's.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, magnificent!.......2006-02-28

Beautiful songs, miraculous voice. What a pity, there are only three songs on the CD. It's something you would never like to stop listening to. Especially if you are in love...

5 out of 5 stars Piece By Piece.......2006-02-10

I don't know why Katie Melua is not more well known in North America. She is truly a wonderfully talented new artist. Her latest album, "Piece By Piece", which I could only purchase through amazon.co.uk (and it was well worth the extra shipping costs), is a terrific follow up to her first, "Call Off The Search". Why is it not available on this side of the pond???

5 out of 5 stars what a delicate 5 star treat !.......2005-12-24

"nine million bicycles", while not the very best song on the piece by piece album (my vote is for "thank you stars"), offers a very pleasant sample as to what the creative partnership of katie melua and mike batt are capable of producing. the song and video (superbly directed by the former 10cc frontman kevin godley) have a rather gentle and ethereal quality that i found to be most savory. imagine eating a the most delicious spring roll and then picture what it would be like to sing a song about love reflective of that experience. that's "nine million bicycles" in a nutshell. while some have criticized this type of music for being vapid and airy, i would contend that it is more heartfelt that most anything we are subjected to listening to from our current music culture.
there is something special to be said about delicacy in it's many forms. what we have with this song is another 5 star effort from one of the greatest female musicians/performers alive today. it's worth adding that the 'b' songs on this single, "stardust" (which is a very challenging song to sing) and "market day in guernica" (about the somewhat forgotten destruction of a small spanish town by the german luftwaffe before ww2) are fantastic bonus tracks making this 3 track cd a more than worthwhile listening experience.

5 out of 5 stars Ahhhh. The melody has finally returned to music again..........2005-10-19

I discovered Katie Melua through the BBC, and was enthralled with her music! Especially, "Nine Million Bicycles!" It is a
VERY lovely little song! The music and Katie's voice are incredible. She will surely have a very bright future in music,
and her star will shine long. Here is something interesting
about how "Nine Million Bicycles" came about, that I heard Katie
describe during a BBC interview recently. While Katie and friends were traveling in China---in Beijing---a tour guide giving facts said, "There are nine million bicycles in Beijing."
Immediately after this was said, Mike, Katie's producer and fellow songwriter turned around and said to Katie, "Won't that
make a great song title?" Then, a few weeks later, Mike showed
Katie this new song, she liked it a lot, thought it was a "cute,
quirky" sort of song, and recorded it. And the rest, is history. And I for one, am hoping Katie and Mike will KEEP making more wonderful melodious music like "Nine Million Bicycles."

At a time when popular music has been micro-marketed to the far side of ad nauseam, Declan MacManus, a.k.a. Elvis Costello, has traded on his reputation as the brightest songwriter to emerge from the new wave era to foster any number of delightful, cross-genre/generation musical surprises, including soundtracks and collaborations with the Brodsky Quartet, Paul McCartney, jazz artist Roy Nathanson, and songwriting legend Burt Bacharach. The latest fruit of that generous, insatiably curious artistic spirit is this elegant partnership with Swedish mezzo-soprano Anne-Sofie von Otter. Though an admitted pop novice, Otter couldn't have picked a better confederate than Costello, an artist whose taste in songs has seldom been tainted by trend.

Together, they weave material from disparate sources--including a slate of compelling Costello material, a pair of Brian Wilson's evocative "Pet Sounds" confessionals, a Tom Waits song from Francis Ford Coppola's One from the Heart (oddly, though effectively, coupled in medley with McCartney's "Junk"), an Abba song, and the Beatles' "For No One"--into a musical tapestry of stately power and grace. Costello sparingly uses his voice as seasoning throughout, though his masterful touch is everywhere. Otter's novice pop singing reveals an easy knack for jazz phrasing that should tempt further explorations and a warmth that belies the rigidity that's so often a byproduct of classical training. Most gratifying of all, this album ultimately achieves what's become one of the loftiest plateaus in Pop music: common ground. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Loved this CD .......2006-06-13

Who would pair Costello and an opera singer?? Elvis, and somehow it works. I really love the tone and moodiness of it and lyrics that talk about love and life, failure and success. It's soulful, in a contemplative way, music for those tucked away, rainy days .

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE this CD!.......2005-09-01

Finally, an opera singer who knows how to channel her Classical training into a sound that is, as one critic aptly described it, "what pop singers would sound like if they could actually sing"! Although Elvis Costello does not join Ms. von Otter very often in the vocals, when he does they harmonize beautifully. With great melodies (some beautiful, some catchy) and sensitive (but not sappy) lyrics, this album makes a fine addition to any CD collection.

3 out of 5 stars Costello Partners with Hubris and Yields Variable Results.......2005-05-08

Having just heard Elvis Costello's masterful collaboration with Burt Bacharach, "Painted from Memory", for the first time this past month, I had high hopes for this equally unusual partnership with mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter released in 2001. This time, however, Costello acts as arranger and producer, and it is von Otter who is front and center on vocals. She is among the most revered of singers on the opera and recital stages, and she has impressed me in the past, in particular, with her Dejanira in the 2002 Marc Minkowski-led performance of Handel's "Hercules", among many other roles she has embodied. Here she is called upon to be a pop chanteuse, and while the beauty of her voice is inarguable in any setting, her ability to interpret the diverse lyrics in these songs is far more debatable. This is where a Marianne Faithfull, a Blossom Dearie or even a Joni Mitchell could capture more of the underlying feeling with a fraction of the vocal power von Otter can provide but with twice the nuance. There is a rather sterile sameness to the performances here, somewhat jazz-inflected in a cocktail lounge manner at times and at other times, rather morose and dirge-like.

Take, for example, her rendition of Brian Wilson's "Don't Ask (Put Your Head on My Shoulder)" from the legendary "Pet Sounds" album. It moves so glacially that it actually extricates the romantic subtext almost surgically. The same can be said for Jessie Mae Robinson's "The Other Woman", which has at least Magnus Persson's vibraphone to provide relief from the tedium. She's better on the other "Pet Sounds" classic, "You Still Believe in Me", where she cannily soars with the chorus, though Costello damages it by adding some odd, muffled rapping in the background. Ironically, it is on the Costello compositions where the recording most noticeably flails. The opener "No Wonder" starts as a "Greensleeves"-like madrigal and then turns into Beatlesque pop; "Baby Plays Around" seems to suffer from exhaustion by all parties; the two Fleshquartet collaborations, "Rope" and "Just a Curio", sound somewhat like extraterrestrial hymns done in a series of minor keys; and the closing title track, "For the Stars" includes peppy, Beach Boys-sounding harmonies which escape her grasp. In fact, "Just a Curio" would have been a more appropriate title for this entire recording.

On the other hand, the Gallic flavor of Benny Andersson's accordion effectively informs her rendition of Tom Waits' "Broken Bicycles", which melds perfectly with Costello's vocal on Paul McCartney's "Junk". Speaking of Andersson, a fellow Scandinavian, von Otter admirably covers a piano-led ABBA ballad, "Like an Angel Passing Through My Room". She also displays a meticulously casual bounce on Lennon-McCartney's "For No One", though it stops rather abruptly. Von Otter acquits herself surprisingly well on the jazzy "Shamed into Love", written by another unlikely duo, Costello and Rubén Blades, and performed as almost a smokier variation of Bacharach's "Alfie". And speaking of Bacharach, she does a nice turn on the lovely "This House Is Empty Now" from the 1998 Bacharach-Costello disc. Costello and von Otter are masters of their craft, but I think some of the collaborations reflect simply irreconcilable differences. While Costello seems to have an insatiable desire to expand musically, his hubris here appears to constrain the often preternatural vocal skill von Otter displays on the opera and recital stage. Consequently, what we have here is a nice album, a generous one with eighteen tracks, that doesn't seem to capitalize on either contributor's talent fully.

1 out of 5 stars what's so funny about peace, love, and understanding?.......2004-04-22

Nothing's funny about this boring duo. I picked this up FREE at my library and it didn't take me too many tracks to see why it was donated. The musical arrangements are hapless and dull, and her voice is Dion without the Vegas power finale. Come to think of it, the lyrics remind me of Dion; they are as saccharine as anything Dion has ever sung. I wasted a blank CD on this limp, sleepy pairing of two otherwise good artists.

1 out of 5 stars No life in her (pop) art.......2004-03-15

I am a big fan of both artists and wanted very much for this combination to work. It avoids the traditional trap of "oversinging" the pop material. But a few years after its release, in these American Idol era, is that really such a terror for pop music any more? So-called oversinging seems pretty popular these days!

The big problem is that von Otter has not found a way to communicate any emotion in this scaled-down form of singing. All her classical techniques are stripped away, and there's nothing to replace them. Sure, her voice is gorgeous, but it sounds exactly the same no matter what the lyrical content. The songs could have been made up of nonsense syllables for all the emotional life she communicates.

Deeply disappointing - but someone, somewhere, will figure out how to bring classically trained singers to the wonderful pop song repertoire that has been composed over the past 50 years. Elvis may very well be the person to do it, but not on this album.

Slabs of dub, slices of surrealism, and disembodied "found" voices make their appearance on the latest offering by ambient dub commandos The Orb. Bicycles & Tricycles offers little in the Orb oeuvre that wasn't stated back on Orblivion and it's not the seismic paradigm shift of "Little Fluffy Clouds," but that's not to say there isn't plenty left in that fertile cumulus to explore. There's the Augustus Pablo melodica and dub bass on "Towers 23," and "Abstractions" lifts Frippertronics, something The Orb has been doing for over a decade. Except for a rap by MC Soom T on "Aftermath," the Orb has abandoned the trip-hop vocals of Cydonia. Instead, Bicycles & Tricycles returns to the original Orb concept which isn't about songs, but lysergic landscapes. Industrial grinds propel you through one moment, only to be untethered into infinite space the next, before being snagged into synchronicity by a dub groove. This album has been available as an import for a while, but the Orb's founder and master controller Alex Patterson has re-sequenced and re-mixed the disc into one of what are probably infinite permutations of flow. --John Diliberto

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Orb evolution .......2007-03-06

One expects great things from exceptional groups, so there is sense of anticipation to meet or exceed one's expectations on a new release. At the time, when this disc came out I was really looking forward to listening to their new music. I listened and was let down, really let down, listened again and was surprised at what I missed before. It has it's great moments, it is just not a cohesive great disc. The bar and standard may have been set too high but regardless I was still somewhat dissapointed. Take "Aftermath," the song has potential, has moments but never takes off to the heights of say "Puffy Little Clouds." Instead we are treated to hip-hopish urban sounds, a female on the mic who sounds like she just got off the plane from France or someplace, far removed from the psychedelia-electronica of signature Orb. There is hope on certain tracks that their vision hasn't been completely blurred for commercialization and that the experimental tripped-out beats are still there."Hell's Kitchen" and "The Land of Ginger Green" demonstrate the power of the Orb to maintain their original creativity and cutting edge staying power. The dub and ambient elements found on several tracks also give up that all is not lost. This disc is not as good as some of their old material but it is good nonetheless. If you like the Orb you may be somewhat disappointed but there is enough good material here to salvage the disc and hope for the future. Take a chance, the Orb always seems to, just not like before but artists always seem to evolve with or without their fans. I don't think they will win over any new fans with this disc, they will keep most of their old fans and just remain status quo, which is sad for fans, considering they were so out there and cutting edge. They may have evolved to their max.

5 out of 5 stars If you dont like it you dont get it........2007-01-10

Paterson and crew deliver something special here. They hope you realize it but I dont think they really care if you dont.

3 out of 5 stars The Orb vs lil' Bow Wow.......2004-12-21

The Orb was for me always intellectual music. I wonder if they tried to catch the U.S market this time. Probably they hit the mark, when I see some reviews here. One reviewer lines up this album with 'Orblivion', I can't follow this artistic thought. When it is for me a mental experience, sitting 2am in front of the computer with Orb's previous subliminar masterpieces in backround, this Bicycles output is rather used for listening it from a transistor while mixing cement in the open. 'The Orb' ends for me at 'Orblivion' and Patersons 'Voyage Into Paradise". This I call INCREDIBLE. Unfortunatly, Bicycles' degraded to mainstream radio music. But I'm waiting.

4 out of 5 stars The good and the bad.......2004-11-18

It's so good to hear any Orb after so long. I think this CD is the logical step after the 'Bless You' compilation. Its obvious that Patterson still has his finger on the pulse of the underground-their time spent in the company of the Kompact roster has served them well. Some of the tracks sound a little dated which has more to do with getting the album out two years late than the songs-they just were beaten to the punch. And I agree with another reviewer- "Aftermath" is absolutely awful. The 'rap' is cringe-worthy. However,I disagree with those that don't like "From A Distance". I think the track is infectious and quite a bit of fun. There are some in-jokes on that one for Orb fans-they sample themselves and finally kill that damn rooster from 'Fluffy Clouds" at the end. Overall,I'd say it's good not great and I expect the next one will be amazing.

4 out of 5 stars New Paths for Orb.......2004-11-18

I have been a fan of The Orb for quite some time, patiently waiting year upon year for albums that had been finished but not released. Any person will tell you that this can be frustrating at times, but if you enjoy a group enough you will put yourself through such tortures. This particular album had been finished for somewhere around two years before its release here, but I do not feel that the wait was all for naught.

Dr. Alex Paterson seems to be willing to head back towards the group's roots, cutting down on the number of radio-friendly tunes with vocals and more traditional song structure as was seen on this album's predecessor, Cydonia. I personally feel this album is much more true to the feel and tone of the Orb anthology.

There also seems to be a stronger emphasis on breakbeat patterns in this album when compared to releases in the past. I for one am a big fan of breakbeats and find them to work perfectly on this disc, especially on my favorite track Prime Evil. There is even a song that could be described as trip-hop, with rhyming laid over the beats. Most of the reviews have given this song a negative tone (Aftermath), but I think that is because there are not a large amount of Orb fans that really listen to hip-hop or anything of the sort. The song isn't that bad, people. It's just something The Orb has never done before. Not all songs fall under this description, but this is certainly a more beat-oriented Orb album than most. Especially when considering the more ambient works they have done (Orbvs Terrarvm, Pomme Fritz, etc).

Very very die hard Orb fans I'm sure will find something to complain about, it seems they always do. While it may not be their most original work, it certainly left me feeling content and has been listened to many times since it was purchased. To anyone that is looking at buying an album of The Orb, I highly recommend it. I used to be very critical of electronic music, blowing it off without really giving it a chance. The Orb changed all that for me. It was unlike anything I had ever heard before, the ultimate "gateway drug" music. Considering the man has a Doctorate in Sound Engineering, it is no surprise. Long Live The Orb!

One of the most up and coming indie rock publicity companies, as well as a center for promising artists, filmmakers, writers, and clothing companies, Holiday Matinee expands beyond any other music company, taking their love of art well beyond that of the confines of rock music.

A fitting description of their passion for everything art-related, Composed On Bicycles, the third installment of their compilation series, showcases their love of music and some of the bands they are currently pushing. http://www.methodshop.com/mp3/ From the power-pop/indie-rock of Superdrag, the melodic heart-on-the-sleeve post-punk of The Jealous Sound, the acoustic musings of singer/songwriter Rocky Votolato, as well as Aberdeen's mid-fi indie pop, and Inner's space-electronica-pop experiment, Holiday Matinee proves they love music by not sticking to any one style.

They're hard workers, fans first, and love to spread the word of great music and talented bands who might otherwise go overlooked. Let's give a round of applause for Holiday Matinee.

    Album Description

The Little Bicycles' debut album, Broken Hearts and Tired Legs, is packed full of energetic melodies paired with Nadia Kean's bittersweet reflective stories of young heartache, broken homes, and innocence lost. Every song gets stuck in your head--there's no filler on this album. Singer-songwriter Nadia Kean has been singing and writing music as a solo artist for most of her life. Andrea Hendel grew up playing violin and attended the Manhattan School of Music for five years. She started playing bass after meeting Kean through roller derby. Hendel's classical background, evident in her melodic & flowing bass lines, serves the pop-rock format of the band perfectly. Bryan Nelson is a seasoned and respected Austin musician/engineer who has worked at Austin's Sweatbox Studio for the past twelve years. He also currently plays drums for The Snake Trap, and guitar for Gorch Fock.

Best known as the prime originator of ambient house back in the early 90s, Alex Paterson has always managed to avoid stagnation. With Bicycles & Tricycles he extends his parameters even further. "From a Distance," featuring vocals from the Corporal and a sample of Grace Jones's "Slave to the Rhythm" pulses and stomps like an electro glitter band. The dark, dubby "Prime Evil," with its creepy laughter, dramatic climax, and a portentous, Lovecraftian narration courtesy of Neville Jason, has an impressive Italian horror-movie feel, while "Kompania" has you thinking of Pink Floyd jamming with a crazed campanologist in deep space.

It's impressively ambitious stuff. But there's also plenty of humor, stretching from the CD case, through to "The Land of Green Ginger," with its clattering percussion and cheerful whistling, where Jason somehow keeps a straight face in recounting a tale of wizards and enchantments. This is the way throughout, with Paterson veering between playfulness and serious intent. In this he has much in common with the psychedelic revolutionaries of the mid-60s. --Dominic Wills

4 out of 5 stars not perfect , but pretty great.......2004-06-29

I've only listened to this CD once so far, but it's definitely becoming one of my favorite Orb albums already.

The first half is a bit of a mixed bag - it starts out with Orb Is, which sounds like a tribute to the "ultraworld" style, and is pretty cool. Then there's Aftermath, with a rapper who sounds surprisingly young and not all that interesting. Things get better with The Land of Green Ginger, although it's not all that much better than the mix on the Back to Mine compilation. Hell's Kitchen, however, is pretty pleasant and groovy. Prime Evil is also cool, especially if you liked S.A.L.T. on Orblivion.

Things just get better in the second half though. Abstractions and LUCA are two of the coolest ambient with beats kind of tracks that the Orb has done. From a Distance amd Tower 23 aren't quite as good (or as long) as A Huge Ever Growing etc. and Towers of Dub, which they remix and imitate, but they're a lot of fun anyway. The album wraps up with a couple fresh, new, distorted ambient tracks.

Overall, this is good stuff, and while the Orb's last album might have ended with "Terminus," the Orb clearly didn't stop there. My only real gripe is that it's kinda short at only 63 minutes total. Would've been nice to have some tracks break the 10 minute mark, but hey, what's here is good.

3 out of 5 stars The rapper ruins it.......2004-05-30

I've been into the Orb for quite sometime and have hunted down some of their more rare selections. I purchased the Japanese edition last fall and enjoyed it fairly well though the first track, 'From a Distance', is a bit too fluffy. I was passing through the UK and saw the recently released UK version with a different track sequence and mixes (one of those being a great rework of the previously mentioned 'fluffy' track). Track two, 'Aftermath', is horrid. Me Soon T sounds like an infant with a mouthful of something foul. Alex Patterson's production on that track is quite lackluster as well, so there's no hope but skipping to the next track. Fear not, The rest of the disc is fantastic. It is a shame that track two is such a digression from what is otherwise a five star album.
