Larger ensembles may have provided Pat Metheny with his most visible successes, but he's repeatedly fired up his most fluid and personal playing in leaner trio settings, starting with this, his 1976 debut as a leader. Bob Moses brings both delicacy and effortless dynamics to his drumming, but it's the late Jaco Pastorius's lyrical electric bass that clinches the guitarist's coming-out party: with Metheny already displaying the liquid tone and exquisite touch that define his sound, old friend Pastorius radiates a sympathetic lyricism and unerring sense of swing. Metheny would match, but not transcend, this level of interplay in justly celebrated troikas with Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins (on Rejoicing) and Dave Holland and Roy Haynes (on Question and Answer). --Sam Sutherland.

A watershed recording.......2007-03-16

A watershed recording, and the first as a leader by Metheny. And the amazing thing is that some of these tunes were actually exercises that Metheny wrote for his Berklee jazz guitar students, after he segued from student to instructor.

A Classic.......2007-03-14

While I'm a long-time jazz fan and sometimes performer, I've only lately come to appreciate Mr. Metheny's playing. This is a must-have in the library, not only for the guitar work, but Bob Moses and Jaco are on fire as well.

This is the One To Have.......2007-02-15

If you could only own one Pat Metheny recording, it would have to be this one, his freshman outing. The opening seconds of "Bright Size Life", with Pat's odd-interval-ascending melody and Jaco's first ringing chord are one of the most memorable beginnings of any recording I have heard. The rest of the record is a brief but astonishing tour through the mind of a great trio that only came together in the wonderful studios of Eicher's ECM. Thank god Gary Burton picked Metheny out of Missouri, and that Metheny teamed with the meteoric Jaco before he left us. At least we have Bright Size Life to cherish over and over.

I'm not really a kid, but I never write reviews so making an account on amazon doesn't make any sense. I never write reviews but this time I can't keep my nouth shut.

What a brilliant album this is! It's quiet, intropective, and delightingly beautiful. Metheny has all the emotions at his fingertips, and brings them to the audience in a quiet and honest way. I especcially like the quieter tracks, like "Unity Village" and "Midwestern Night Dream". This is just plain beautiful stuff, honestly. Everyone can like this cd, may it be on occasion, late at night with a good drink (very recommendable), or just all day long (for jazz freaks only). Very highly reccomended. Everyone should've heard this once in a lifetime.

Jazz Trio 101.......2006-07-08

This is required listening for all jazz and fusion musicians! In the art of music as language Jaco and Pat 'talk' to each other in a way most musicians don't really comprehend. BSL presents the music at the early peak of two of the most important jazz musicians off all time without synths and post-production filler. It's raw and intensely beautiful with only the instruments themselves for reference.
For the reviewer that rated this a `1', you seriously have some music history to learn. Practice your own instrument more and you'll understand what genius is represented here.

More Good stuff from the Lo Greco Bros........2003-07-18

They've done it again - put out an outstanding album! I really got into Soulstance a few years ago thanks to the Break & Bossa Compilations. Those, from the Idizioni-Ishtar label Schema, had different artists in the bossa/nu-jazz genre along with artists on the Schema/Milano label. First I picked up Act On!, then En Route, then Truth Simplicity & Love (US release).

Now in 2003 comes the highly anticipated third original release: "Life Size". And boy was it worth the wait! If you've checked out Break & Bossa 5, you got an idea of what to expect. But much like Label mate Rosalia De Souza, the songs from that compilation are different than the prototypes in that double disc set. While Honesty is only slightly altered, "Nucleus" is an altogether bigger and jazzier cut. In fact this cd is a bit more jazzy, not quite as contemporary, and far more bossa-ish than the previous two. I'd say that this actually goes more towards the sound of Gerardo Frisina more so than Nicola Conte (both of which are also on Schema).

As for cuts - through and through this is a good release. Caribe, Au Revoir, Zenith - pretty much all of the tracks are quality to me and have a hook to them that you'll enjoy. By my favorite is Lost on a Wave - classic Schema style and sound. And the beginning of "Life Size", the cut, immediately reminded me of Soulstance's remix of label mate S-Tone Inc's "Arjear". This is definitely a lounge, bar type CD which is solid for the background when the friends are over, or when you want to hear something smooth... whenever you want to hear something smooth.

Pick this up! I definitely recommend it and it's one of my CD's for the summer. This is one catchy, jazzy and classy cd! And if you do like this, you have to check out Gerardo Frisina's "Ad Lib", S-Tone Inc's "Sobrenatural", Nicola Conte's "Bossa Per Due" and, of course, the upcoming Break & Bossa 6 and the previous Break & Bossa 5. Wish Amazon had the vinyls though.

Nicola Conte Meets Kruder & Dorfmeister in a Refreshing Way.......2003-06-25

I have not done too much research on this group, although I have heard several of their tracks on the Om Lounge compilations. However, let me say that this album is even better than the Om tracks.

"Life Size" tracks have a very jazzy appeal to it, with very deep bass and bossa thumps that are rich and abundant. It's a bit of Nicola Conte (remember Bossa Per Due on ESL?) and Kruder & Dorfmeister. It brings together Italian, German, and Brazilian club moods. Some tracks have hints of the "Easy Tempo" Italian bossa tracks are, other tracks are more Berlin. There's some Drum and Bass influence.

This is a beautiful album that any downtempo aficionado should own. It will make my top ten nu jazz albums of the year.

Hard.......2003-06-07

After being a big Sub Humans fan I listen to a few Citizen Fish albums for a while, and although they were great, I felt the band was getting alittle tired and uninspired. After listening to this album, Citizen Fish has arisen to one of my favorite bands. This album is so inspired and intellegent, it is really one of the best I've heard from the punk rock scene in a while. It isn't soft at all and will make you want to scream the lyrics while driving in your car.

Good Music!.......2003-06-09

I really enjoy New Creation's music. They have their own sound. It sounds like 1000 voices. The songs they sing are dynamic and very expressive. During supper, after church we'll just pop in the Jericho Project and relax. This is just GOOD MUSIC!

This is the most amazing collection of spirituals and inspirational music I've heard in years. The variety of a capella flavors took me on a inspirational joy ride. It's an enhanced CD too. So i could chat with other listeners while I was enjoying the music online. This is an awesome CD all the way down to the artwork. (The pitch pipe is very classy!)

Real music by a real music maker.......1999-12-14

Omni Trio has allways been one of thos artist who does what he wants to do and rather then following other peoples standards he makes his own. For that reason his music allways gives you a breath of fresh air from the standard form. And this album shows he still got lots of ideas to change the form. The only track I didn't like was Brothers in Detroit but then you also got tracks like Byte Size Life and Assassins and more that you just go wow over. The remix by Big Bud is good and well done but lacks ideas.Shimon remix shows you the harder side of drum&bass and is a really massiv track keeping much of the original feel even though it's been changed this much.All the tracks have a nice feel to them and most of the tracks are full of feelings and atmosphere. This album is not as good as Skeleton Keys wich is his best work and one of the best Drum & Bass albums of all time.But this album is still one of the best and should get lots of people to start to listen to drum&bass music and take it not only as some dance music hype but as a real music with thoughts and ideas behind it. I'm mostly into the harder side of drum&bass but there is just something so brilliant about everything this man does that I just cant help loving his music. If your new to drum&bass this is a good album to start of on.
