Customer Reviews:
The Best Ever Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (in Berlin).......2007-04-29
This is no doubt the best rendition of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony.
Even though it was recorded live you can feel the crowds passion in silence as the music sores our spirits to new hights.
The depth of the acoustics and the feelings it evokes in one is outstanding.
You have not lived until you hear this live concerto at full volume.
You wont be disappointed, if your new to Classical, I reccomend this as a start to your collection.
Listen with Headphones and think of the Berlin Wall and the tragedy that surrounded it, only to be lifted by mans yearning for freedom. This is what Beethoven would of wanted to deliver this piece for.
Who let this old fart conduct this masterpiece?.......2007-02-25
I know who let him conduct it! Those greedy DG music executives, that's who, hoping to make a quick killing with the release of this sludge of a performance. The fall of the Berlin Wall was an event of great significance and to commemorate the occasion, DG gets the most famous living conductor in the world to conduct one of the greatest and most famous works of music in history, Beethoven's 9th Symphony! They even changed the word joy to the word freedom in the finale! This had the makings of something truly special but unfortunately it falls short of even the most mediocre expectations.
Herbert von Karajan died not too long before the Berlin Wall fell and if he was still alive, it would undoubtedly be Karajan conducting on this recording, not Bernstein. Karajan became an old man physically in his final years, but his musicmaking never surrendered to his age. Karajan's last decade of performances was just as vigorous and intense as in the good, old days. Bernstein on the other hand, really did become an old man, physically and musically. His tempos became messy and lethargic, everything was elongated, ponderous and many times vapid. Don't think I'm wanting in respect to Bernstein, I think he was great when he was young, never on the level of Toscanini, Furtwangler, Karajan, but great nonetheless. Even in his final years, Lenny could turn out a gem like Shostakovich's Leningrad Symphony with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra but more and more Bernstein became the hack, the slow, painful hack. Listen to the infamous Tchaikovsky 6th from the final Bernstein years, it's a joke!
Returning to this Beethoven 9th, it is just as much of a joke as that Tchaikovsky 6th. The first movement is nearly 18 minutes long, limp and slow without any of the apocalyptic climaxes that you have to deliver if you're going to take such a spacious tempo. The scherzo is better, one short repeat is skipped and the movement is palatable. The adagio is awful, 20 minutes long and without any spiritual tension at all. Furtwangler's famous wartime 9th also has a 20 minute adagio but it is phrased and sculpted so beautifully, with such inner intensity that it overwhelms you and tears are not uncommon upon hearing it's magnificence. Bernstein on the other hand puts you to sleep. It's nap time.
The finale, can Bernstein pull it off? Did he ever? This might come as a shock to some but as great a conductor as Bernstein was, he never recorded a great version of the 9th Symphony. I repeat, never! Not with the NYPO, not in Vienna and certainly not here in Berlin with this hastily put together concoction of musicians from various orchestras. Bernstein could succeed with the initial three movements, back in NY and in Vienna with the VPO, but the finale always eluded him. He schmaltzed it up every up, he made it disjointed, episodic and nearly incoherent as on this "Ode to Freedom" CD. It becomes not joy, not freedom but instead, a hapless, lethargic mess. The whole thing seems like a funeral and proceeds for nearly 29 minutes! Karl Bohm's final digital version on DG was also that slow but felt somewhat more alive what with the great orchestra and chorus. Bernstein doesn't even have that.
Please, whatever you do, don't listen to this nightmare and conclude that this is Beethoven's 9th. It's not. If you want to hear the 9th, there is Furtwangler, Karajan, Toscanini, Solti, Wand, whomever, but not this Bernstein, it's possibly the worst ever! I'm not exaggerating, it's just as egregious as Roger Norrington's infamous London Classical Players recording, except for totally different reasons. Norrington is the worst of the period-instrument, fast paced, clipped readings and this Bernstein is the worst of the traditional, big orchestra versions.
If you just love Bernstein and want to hear him in Beethoven's 9th Symphony, go buy his earlier versions, one from the late 1970's with the Vienna Philharmonic and one with the New York Philharmonic from the 1960's. Those versions are average but even average is far superior to this epic mess called "Ode to Freedom". Please free yourself from this recording, it's only good as a bad joke!
I will only listen to this work in private.......2006-08-18
For years, when I listened to the 9th, I would play the 1st and 2nd movements
and then skip to the finale. I enjoy crisp, energetic and powerful music and
the 9th has it in unsurpassed measure. And this rendition provides just that.
I haven't listened to all the great performances of the 9th, but I've listened
to quite a few, and this is my favorite. This is the version I compare all the
subsequent ones I've listened to. I've heard better 4th mvts., but this one is
very near to the best. The first two movts. are done competantly and do not
disappoint. If the skills of the orchestra and recording quality were to be the
same....the time alotted the conductor, that he has to rehearse a work with
his players, determines it's ultimate success. I believe that Bernstein had a
good amount of time to communicate his interpretation to this orchestra.
And Lord knows there was high motivation by all concerned in the project.
Bernstein's interpretation of Beethoven's 3rd movt., the adagio molto e
cantabile, is by far the finest I've ever experienced. The emotional
groundwork is laid and the peak and resolution are sublime.
I know I'm going to fight back the tears, if I'm allowed to
listen this 3rd movt without distraction. If you ever get the opportunity
to purchase the video tape of this concert, do by all means buy it.
Oddly, the audio recording, alone, does not contain the full emotional
impact of the performance. However the audio CD is a "must have".
But, the full effect of the live performance in the video tape with
both audio and visual is truly magnificant. I'm not going
to attempt to describe it here. Why it's not reprinted for more to
experience is a sad business. People don't know what they're missing.
I allow myself to view my copy but seldom. I dare not watch it too
many times.
The longest running commercial.......2005-10-09
But one would rather watch the Milk commerical, at least it markets some real stuff and doesn't take 70+ labored minutes. The coalition of the willing was undoubtedly doing a heck of a job in fending off the competition from various common village bands, and the commander-in-chief barely held its members together. Despite all the Freiheit, it is a freudlos performance.
A sloppy, heaartfelt performance from a great occasion.......2005-09-18
This best-selling Beethoven Ninth, with new lyrics for the Schiller poem in the finale, has sold by the millions, I'm sure. The fall of the Berlin wall called for such a grand coming together of musicians form all over Europe, but in musical terms this isn't good Beeethoven. Bernstein wrenches every note to grab as much drama as possible out of it, and there is nothing left of real, unvarnished Beethoven. I owuld only buy this CD as a histroical memento at this late date.

this is probably one of the worst dance albums i've ever bought.
the woman's voice is so grating. if they got someone to do decent vocals, it wouldn't be half bad.

Great Songs!.......2007-01-04
Awesome artist. Loved them. The second CD was great as well. Some great live songs and mixes.
great cd.......2006-06-29
There are few cds I can listen to from beginning to end without getting bored, but I can definitely say all the tracks on this one keep me pumping.
If you liked groups like LaBouche, dance remix albums, or the "house" synth bass-type music that used to be played in clubs before hip-hop took over, this is a great choice.
catchy electro/synth pop dance album with an 80s retro feel..........2006-05-09
Much like Lasgo's "Far Away" CD, this is definitely one you'll want to have if you love the fusion of modern dance and 80s new wave/nrg. Plus, you get a bonus disc of remixes and live tracks--I would have rather they had put more remixes instead (like those for the track "A to B"), but at least those are available on a CD single.
This is predominantly very catchy electro synth house, featuring mostly female vocal (STRONG vocals for a pop dance singer) but there's an occasional lead by the male (who sings with an 80s new wave feel). The tracks break down like this:
CD1:
1. Fairytale (incredible synth pop dance track)
2. A to the B (super catchy, more of an 80s hi-nrg commercial feel)
3. Ten Miles (A more mellow dance track, like moodier depeche, or perhaps camouflage, but with female vocal)
4. From Paris to Berlin (Another 80s hi-nrg feel, very commercial)
5. Peace Inside (gorgeous dance track--the chorus is specatacular)
6. Vienna (You definitely know where this band is coming from with this phenomenal synth dance cover of the Ultravox classic)
7. Dressed in Blue (downtempo electro house--almost reminds me of a moodier Abba song)
8. Ultimate Control (Hot track. The male sings lead, and it reminds me of something Wolfsheim would do)
9. Keen on Disco (don't know why the superior original mix is on the bonus disc. This is a slow version. Very dark Depeche feel)
10. Cheap Trick Kinda Girl (trying to be fun maybe? Just check out the title. This is a pretty horrid house song--with the male even guesting with a sort of Real McCoy type spoken part. Blech)
11. Loved Like A Maniac (hi-nrg retro feel--reminds me of something the Bobby O would have the Flirts record)
12. Deeper Still (Dark and brooding dance track--pretty heavy stuff, but mesmerizing)
13. Sunday Morning March (a short "outro". Non-dance instrumental)
CD2:
1,2. From Paris to Berlin--the original extended mix is better, if you can hunt down the CD single. The United Nations mix is sort of bland, the DJ Alligator mix is very euro dance
3,4. Keen on Disco--hit n run disco mix has a heavier euro dance beat, the original mix is the winner, with a more retro synth dance feel.
5. Careful With the Boys--a campy dance song featuring a downtempo verse with the house beat kicking in during the chorus. Not bad, but better off here than on the first disc.
6. Bass Driven Music--instrumental electro house
7. Balagan--a real novelty dance song. Very euro nrg, not really vocal.
8-11. The live tracks are not bad. Perhaps some of Infernal's older stuff because it sounds dated.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

Customer Reviews:
"Richard Alden", best of the best!.......2006-10-15
I bougth this CD only for the track #8, from my Fair Lady "I've grown accustomed to her face", played, arranged and directed by Richard Alden, the same Ronnie Aldrich. The arrange has a little more rithm than the version of Phase 4 Stereo in "The magic moods of Ronnie Aldrich". It sounds spectacular!
The CDs from Readers Digest have some themes from Ronnie and "Richard Alden", inedits and a treasures for who loves the music of that genius od the piano
The rest of the CD has pretty songs.

Customer Reviews:
What a great collection of old standards.......2000-11-17
This is an exciting cd. It features the hits of many of the great tunesmiths of America. What a treat!
I belive this series showcases six composers on each cd. With this format, there's no way to go wrong with this cd. The 101 Strings do a wonderful job of performaning these songs.
Recommendation: I think it would be wise to buy this cd if you love the standards.

Customer Reviews:
A bargain collection of showtunes.......2005-08-19
This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.
