5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece!.......2004-03-23

I can't say enough good things about this one. The album edit is great in itself, but all the remixes shine on this one. My favorite is the Junkie XL Vocal Mix-it's just superb! I like the way the vocals are mixed it's a great dance version. The Slander Kleinenberg' Convertible mix comes in second, this one is slower and sexier. The Burufunk is ok,too. The only thing I don't like about this CD is that there are only three remixes, I wish there at least three more on this disc, but it's still worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Not your typical BT song, but still very good.......2004-02-23

Over the years, BT has really changed quite a bit... from their soothing nature trance songs found in ESCM to a much harder and a more vocal style. This song can be considered to be in the latter category. I really enjoyed some of his work in ESCM, but after listening to BT's most recent compilations, including "Somnambulist," I have to say that he is definitely heading in the right direction. This is a great song with a bunch of break sequences. It's no "Flaming June" and it's not quite "Never Gonna Come Back Down," though it's more of a softer version of the latter. He should have named this song "Simply Being Loved" instead of "Somnambulist," but once again, this shows you BT's creative side.

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT.......2003-09-04

Nothing less than a modern electronic masterpiece. The mixes are OK, but they've got nothing on the original.TURN IT UP LOUD.

4 out of 5 stars Does this artist publish any music that's not so "Enhanced?".......2003-08-01

This is the first piece of music I have experienced by this artist. When I first heard it on a local dance station, I quickly scribbled down as many lyrics as I could so I'd be sure to find it searching online.

This is a wonderful song. Musically, it's satisfying, the beats are great and, moreover, this song seems to have meaning; some thought behind it.

Since I don't know this artist, I'm interested to know, however, why on earth he would inject the most obnoxious, distracting and un-listen-to-able vocal edits into an otherwise brilliant composition? (Oooh, over 6,000 vocal edits; I'm so not impressed.) He's destroyed it. I'd love to know if there's a version available that hasn't been "enhanced." Please, anybody, what's up with this artist?

This is the type of composition that could touch, or at least be enjoyed by, millions of people. He's limited his audience by making it tedious to listen to. The melody, harmony and rhythm work; the lyrics are great. I can't wait for the "unplugged" version.

Album Description

"...Old space rockers never die... they just decide to leave Earth for good and go permanently into space. Nuff said...buy this album." - AURAL INNOVATIONS

Along with Die Kreuzen, Boy Dirt Car and sister band Vocokesh, Milwaukee psychedelic rock-and-sound legends F/i spawned a space-rock scene in the `80s unlike any other around. By harnessing the ghosts of Hawkwind and Blue Cheer, extracting the German avant rock scene from the early 1970s as defined by Guru Guru, Ash Ra Tempel and Agitation Free, and sifting it through industrial sounds akin to Throbbing Gristle and Nurse With Wound, over time it has become evident that F/i have quietly influenced a whole new generation of exploratory instrumental freakers. Originally issued in a miniscule run in 2003, A Question for the Somnambulist traverses dark and hazy landscapes, hypnotic textures laced with electronics and exploratory guitar riffs dripping with effects. Resuscitated from the annals of uber-obscurity for another suckerpunch to your third eye, this reissue includes one bonus track from the sessions and comes in a limited edition of 1,000 housed in a deluxe letterpressed and recycled paperboard package.

4 out of 5 stars Into the astral plane, following Hawkwind's vapor trail?.......2006-05-17

I came across this latest album, re-released in a limited edition (unnumbered, however) of 1000 on the estimable label Strange Attractors. The Aquarius Records (SF) site recommended it, and having liked the sampled songs I heard, I took the plunge. I'd never heard of this 20-year veteran Milwaukee band, but since my keyword search was "Acid Mothers Temple" and later "Hawkwind," you can catch the drift of this f/i album. Apparently it's mellower than their 80s-era assaults--none of which are still in print and never were issued widely.

The best song is the last one, a bonus track not on the original 2003 release. It has a pep and a bounce that the others, fine excursions as they are into the terrain traversed by Hawkwind three decades ago and over the past decade by AMT, lack. The line-up on that bonus track differs from the other songs, which may mean a shake-up one way or the other resulted in the ninth track's noticeably different ambience. Although the album inside has no notes to speak of beyond credits, due acclaim's due the cover artist for his Frank Baum-Oz inspired (at least to my eyes) graphic and typography. This album's a solid offering, and fans of Hawkwind and AMT are advised to snap it up before these 1000 vanish into the astral plane like f/i's predecessors must have.

      Album Description

Disgust with mediocre musicianship, sterile simplistic arrangements and art-apathetic hype eventually led Jody Park and Terry Clouse to begin creating music that scratched that itch. Somnambulist's 2nd album, 'The Paranormal Humidor', features dark cinematic symphonic rock fused with unbridled modern aggression. Sounding like a head on collision between vintage Yes and Soundgarden, The Paranormal Humidor is a rethinking of old school progressive rock ideas re-energized for the 21st Century. The album features crystalline production courtesy of the Glass Hammer prog rock duo of Steve Babb and Fred Schendel. Laser's Edge.

4 out of 5 stars Heavy Classicprog meets some elements of Seattle sound..........2003-03-09

Somnambulist is a mixture of K.Crimson, heavy classic prog(Yes oriented in some harmonic solutions)and the modern art rock sound, filtered through a few elements of Seattle sound(like Soundgarden)... their debut album was probably their best effort, whose output was a compact sound, King Crimson-like all along its duration !!In this case the production has been improved:

First of all the track "In The Mindwarp Pavillion" is the best example of Somnanbulist strong emulation of King Crimson ... after a short dramatic narration you find an intricate riff and some excellent rhytmical patterns with strange time signatures, a great crescendo and stunning instrumental highlights !! The second track "Pathos Of Least Resistance" has got the same typical vocal harmonies such as the best performances by Yes;instead "Destroy She Said" is characterized by such those elements of Seattle sound, I don't like very much, but nevermind cause, after that, you find the track "Infant"( a talented guitar arpeggio based upon a classical model, very tasteful) and the odd "Troy Built Helen" a sort of modern art rock version of "Brandeburg Concerto no3 in G Major" by J.S. Bach!

I suggest this album to you if you like the modern art rock stuff, mixed with heavy classic prog, BUT TO ME THE DEBUT ALBUM BY HAMADRYAD,"CONSERVATION OF THE MASS",BELONGING TO THE SAME GENRE, IS MORE INTERESTING ...WELL MAKE YOUR CHOICE!!

      4 out of 5 stars Worlds collide?.......2002-09-20

The label description of Somnambulist says to the effect The Paranormal Humidor is a collision of Yes and Soundgarden which on a simple (and easily marketable) level is true.

This is the second album by Somnambulist, the first being more experimental in nature. On The Paranormal Humidor things are a bit, note - a bit less avant garde than their previous lineup. New lead vocalist Peter Cornell (brother of Chris) at times sounds like his brother and musically there is a good deal of intensity which makes the Soundgarden comparison reasonably fair.

Musicially Somnambulist borrows some influences in terms of progressive rock gestures. There's plenty of Mellotron, Organ and Moog to find on this album and it's played with virtuosity.
Where Somnambulist is different is it's use of darker tones, darker themes and a heavy approach that is far more intense and riveting than Progressive Metal.

This is not an album that demonstrates how fast everyone can play and how dense a sound they can get. Prog Metal acts could take a lesson from Somnambulist. The intensity is more in the hard rock meets progressive style circa 1974 rooted in the ideas started by King Crimson on it's brilliant album, Red from that period of time.

In a lot of ways Somnambulist sounds like a different route taken from their 80's Belew, Fripp, Bruford, Levin period. Here is the symphonic progressive meets hard edged rock that most of the "great" acts rarely touched.

There are many time changes and stop on a dime moods on The Paranormal Humidor. Peter Conell's vocals are great with lots of changes in feel, at times soaring, at others gruff, dark, light and often in one song. The musicians are all talented and have their moments. Thankfully the solos are not wank-fests but smart and concise.

Somnambulist is "difficult" in that their potential audiences may experience culture shock. Credit is due for Somnambulist's attempt at progressing progressive rock. For me the jury is out as to how successful the result is. At it's very least most open minded prog fans will enjoy The Paranormal Humidor.

Recording quality is excellent as is performance. Feeling the urge to experiment or maybe spice up your music collection? Start here. This band takes risks and hopefully potential listeners will too.
