A collector's item with a few problems.......2007-07-03
I enjoyed this album. I too anticipated it, and made sure that I had enough time and space (not in the car, not while I was doing something else) to listen to it. It starts well--the Donald Lawrence touch. I have become accustomed to the new studio sound that they have all been showcasing on their solo albums, and Donald catches this sound nicely. It really is not true to their live sound of many years ago, but I guess the Clark Sisters have changed with the times--in many ways. I really enjoyed the remakes--enjoyed singing along. As any tried and true fan, I had all the ad-libs and fillers down to the note. I like how the reggae beat on "World" is updated to a more contemporary reggae beat. But didn't anyone else have questions about the strange voice on "Instrument." I understand it may be Blanche from Tri-City, but why is she on here? And if she is going to be, why isn't she at least named as a guest vocalist to save me the trouble of figuring out which one of the sisters had lost it? Also, it seems that Twinkie was a bit hoarse. She wasn't soaring as she usually does with that crystal clear voice of hers. She deals well with it, but her hoarseness took away some of the "sangin' " that we are accustomed to hearing from the group. For that matter, Karen seemed to be hoding back too. Anyway, a good buy. If you're going to be a Clark Sisters connaiseur you need to get it.
Don't Take it for granted...A Must Have!.......2007-06-20
I love it...
A CD that will inspire to change from the beginning till the End.
Got to love the Clark Sisters and their legacy.
Warning:The CD does have it technical issues like Karen's 'It's Not Over' because you can tell the difference between studio and LIVE...Overall great buy!
AND THE WINNER IS>>........2007-06-17
They have to get a grammy for this. I understand why is been in the top CD's since it came out. My favovite is 'Livin'. It's one of the new tracks, and they are sangin for Lord! I enjoyed them doing the old songs too. I love "Blessed and Highly Favored" THe orginal cut i think was on Twinkie Solo CD. Between The clark sisters, and J. Moss they could put on a Jamin concert. That would be a blessed concert. If you a true fan of the music you will love this CD. They all look good and sound good, give them the Grammy please!
Amazing!.......2007-06-13
I bought this album the very day it came out! This album is a masterpiece. Blessed and Highly Favor is my favortie song on the album. I really like how they all did there thing on each song.. Good luck to you ladies.. And now I see there's a live dvd.. OMG IM IN HEAVEN! I just ordered that. Can't wait for this to be released.. Now I can get the visual to them singing all of these songs from the live album! PRAISE GOD!
The Clark Sisters CD is breath taking !!!.......2007-05-31
Have you ever had a CD that you where casually listening to all of a sudden stop you dead in your tracks? That is what this CD will do to you.
I was nonchalantly listening and then the song "Instrument" came on then everything stopped and up went the praise. And if that was not enough, the following song "You Heard Me Cry" just floored me.
The whole album is well put together with the old and the new. The sisters take turns taking the lead on specific songs which really accentuates how talented each sister really is. "One Last Time" (Live)should be a CD that you will play for years to come.
If you have never really listened to the Clark Sisters before I would advise you to listen to the samples and then order/buy it immediately. You'll be glad you did!

One of Parkening's Finest.......2007-01-16
A beautiful and contemplative solo guitar recording of hymns, spirituals and other sacred works such as Mozart's Laudate Dominum and Humperdinck's Evening Prayer. Parkening is in exceptional form, the transcriptions are superb, and the recording itself is of the highest quality. Little wonder this has been an enduring classic since its release in the early 1980s.
Music that perfectly touches the soul ..........2005-10-24
Christopher Parkening is the most musically inventive person playing the classical guitar today; you must purchase this CD if you haven't already. It contains exquisitely beautiful hymns & sacred music (arranged perfectly for guitar, I might add) along with Mr. Parkenings masterful transcriptions of works by Bach, Haydn, Mozart and Humperdinck.
Above all, this is music that glorifies God and that was the ultimate purpose of creating this CD.
The end of a Search.......2005-09-23
Classsical guitar is among the top forms of music and Christopher Parkeniong is one of the greatestartists in this genre, if not the best. I had despaired at ever findinding the CD "Simple Pleasures" and was so very pleased to locate it . I am so enjoying it now. I will be back for more as funds permit.
Simple, yet delightful, Gifts!.......2005-02-21
This was one of the first CD's I purchased back in 1988, and I bought it on a whim. Of the hundreds of CD's I now own, including many genres, this one remains in my list of top 10 favorites for a number of reasons.
1. Mr. Parkening plays every song on it with remarkable technical excellence and clearly discernible passion.
2. It includes classical, folksy, and reflective material, which could create a rough flow, but Mr. Parkening moves deftly from mood to mood leaving the listener with a sense of seamless transitions.
3. Although the songs on it are all religious classics they are played without pretense, which makes it accessible to any listener and uplifting for those seeking spiritual refreshment.
In closing, the is one thing "wrong" with this CD is it's too short!
Exquisite & Divine.......2001-02-17
This treasure chest holds such jewels! The cd rushes in with the joyous energy of Bach's Praludium, allows you to reflect and catch your breath on Pritchard's Hyfrydol and Variation, and flows forward with the grace and underlying passion that makes this a precious favorite.

A favorite..........2007-07-02
People are surprised to find this CD in my collection. But I just say, "With the music, the beat, the lyrics, and the harmonies on this project, what's NOT for a middle-aged, Southern Baptist, white woman to like?" They just laugh and so do I as I crank it up a bit louder and sing along, drumming my fingers on the steering wheel of my Buick Century.....
Hmmm...that reminds me. It's time to buy another copy of this one....
lmao.......2006-04-29
"I don't want it" is the stupidest, most distasteful song ever. Don't tell people how to have sex goddamnit!!!!!!!!!
HAHAHA...hey...this is actually good..........2006-04-06
I detest hip-hop. Really. I hate it. In fact, when I first heard Luv Is A Verb on Intermission, I thought, "They're kidding...right?" and had no interest in purchasing "whatever cd that came from." And I didn't until I heard great things about it. Since everyone who had heard it told me they loved it, I decided I should try it out, but only if it was cheap, which it was. I couldn't believe how good it was! It starts out with Luv Is A Verb, and I thought, "whatever, heard that before", but the rest of the cd is almost perfect!
There are a few interludes that are basically not worth the time, but if you're in the mood they can be funny.
The primary songs are (just skip down if you already know about them from other reviews):
1. Luv Is A Verb - Enter the infamous, "down with the dc Talk, d-d-down with the dc Talk, are you down with the dc Talk, d-d-down with the dc Talk." I can't count the number of people who I have heard make fun of those lines. But if you try to forget that, the lyrics are very good. "Luv is enough if it's unconditionally, given now ya livin' out the Great Commission" Great words. Toby McKeehan really outdid himself on this song. (I'm trying to omit how tired of this song I am. It's a great song, but it can get old really fast.)
2. That Kinda Girl - This song describes the "kind of girl" that "loves the Lord" and is "virtuous in every way". Toby raps his head off in this one. Kevin and Michael still both have great voices, but back in '92, they had incredible voices, which are displayed in this song and actually, in all the tracks. The beat is undeniably an early-nineties beat, but it's catchy, and more of that comes up next.
3. Jesus Is Just Alright - If you think about it, dc Talk have done scads of cover songs, probably their most known one being "In The Light", but this one is not to be ignored. Toby's rap is so catchy it's bound to be in your head, at least in small portions, for a week or so, even if you only listen to it once. The part that always gets stuck in my head is the last rap part, which is "Never trite when I write cause the Lord is my light and His word is my bond so ya know (know, know), He's alright." Great beat, underlined with repetetive but not annoying keyboards.
4. Say The Words - This is probably one of my favorite dc Talk songs, but not this version. You've probably heard "Say The Words (NOW)", which is the remix of this song. This version is lacking in any melody other than what is sung by Michael and Kevin. The rest is an overuse and underuse of bass and electric guitars. But Toby's rap toward the middle is great, climaxing with "choose to lose the pride that may tug at you, don't be afraid of the words I love you".
5. Socially Acceptable - This has slowly become my favorite song off this. Toby later described this song as one of the "phatest" beats off this cd. It is. My favorite lyrics from this one are the poignant words in the chorus, "it's okay, in whose sight?" Good reminder that it's not okay to do what everyone else is doing, just because they're all doing it.
6. Free At Last - "WHAT???" Don't be distraught at the first 30 seconds. Soon the strange intro morphs into one of the most awesome Christian songs of the 90's. Backed by a choir in the chorus, this showcases Michael Tait and Kevin Max Smith's best vocals. Toby's rapping, too, is some of the best in their history. "The father first receives us, the truth then frees us, forgiven, now I'm living like a man full of Jesus", that's some handy rhyming if you ask me.
7. Time Is... - "Straight up rock-n-roll", it begins...well, maybe. This is probably the most guitar-driven song on Free At Last, but definitly short of rock-n-roll. However, I personally love the almost uncontrollable sound of Kevin Max's vocals on the chorus. Mike Tait's voice is good here too, and Toby constantly is rapping "tick tock tickedy tock". The song drifts into a rock song with a strange beat, then, according to Toby's "orders", they "break it down" and return to hip-hop. But it goes back to that rock/pop beat towards the end again. This is a genius song.
8. The Hardway - "I guess I'm the kind of guy that has to find out for myself." This song, according to Tobymac, has been remade more than four times (I only count four, but he knows best, I guess). This song is a great song that ends with "I'm on my knees and I'm crying for help." This is the only song that is not fast-paced, and as such, had to be included on Intermission, but this version is great, too. It's a beautiful cry out to God acknowledging His power and our weakness.
9. Lean On Me - "Oldie but a goodie", the first words you hear on this song, are definitive of this song. It's an awesome rap/hip-hop version of the original song by Bill Withers. Don't think this version is anything like what you could've heard on the radio. Toby's rap isn't included in the edited radio version. I think they drive the song rather well, so don't miss this song.
10. I Don't Want It - Song about abstaining from sex until marriage. Good message, good beat, and Toby's rapping isn't even in the least bit annoying. Kevin's and Michael's singing are great. Again, their vocals are even better in this song than in the later songs.
11. Word 2 The Father - Just when you think they've outgrown their "rapping language" you hear this song. It's good, but so reminiscent of Nu Thang (but that should, of course, be expected, since the song is a pun on all the names of their songs from Nu Thang), it's just kind of annoying.
Overall, this is an awesome cd, I suggest it for Christians; who love music, or dc Talk, or even modern Christian rap/hip-hop, since this is how it all started. If you want more of "Jesus Freak", go try "Supernatural" instead, but if you even remotely liked "Nu Thang", even if just for its nostalgic value, you will absolutely love this cd.
The band's best work in retrospect.......2006-03-29
Don't get me wrong, I liked NU THANG when it came out (heck, I saw them on the tour with Michael W. Smith and my copy is autographed by all 3 of the trio) and still put it on from time to time though I snicker at some of the songs now. Some of that, admittedly, is due to the fact that I'm now 35 and not really in the 'target' audience of teenagers this music was aimed at when it came out in 1992. [I don't feel the empathy with the pro-parental communication message of "Talk it Out" that I may have when I was still a teen myself.]
This one, though: I still listen to it and for the most part it's holding up well outside of a few minor clunkers. This one found the crew working harder to integrate samples, snappy melodies and harmony vocals, more skilled rap (don't get me wrong, Toby Mac has never been a GREAT rapper but he's honed his skills more here. He's more of a 'pop' rapper..akin to the likes of a Will Smith or a member of Bell-Biv-Devoe than a Christian counterpart to 2PAC or Biggie.), and a more cohesive feel to the album as the sound coalesced more into R&B tinged pop with rap icing.
HIGHLIGHTS:
"That Kinda Girl" was the band's statement about the allure of the Proverbs 31 woman, a woman who's "virtuous in every way/The kinda girl that makes me say/I hope she comes my way". It was the antithesis of L.L.'s "Round the Way Girl" and the tune really nails it home with "Hey, the girlie ain't playin'!". "Jesus is Just Alright" is a great techno-influenced jittery update of the Doobie Brothers' classic complete with what is probably Toby's best rap break of the album
. If you can past the jokey intro, title tune "Free at Last" marries a traditional black gospel choir sound to scratching and R&B sounds with a little rock guitar as accent to create an anthem celebrating the life one finds after embracing Jesus. The choir testifyin' on the hook is irresistible but the samples from Martin Luther King just make it niftier. "The Hardway" bemoans the hard lessons learned when we violate God's Word while being honest enough to admit that we all do this as sinners. ("Some people got to learn the hard way/I guess I'm the kinda guy who's got to find out for myself...I'm on my knees and I'm cryin' for help")
LOWS:
"Luv is a Verb" isn't outright bad but it does have some of the most unfortunate rhymes here ("drain-o" and "explain-O"..ACK!). "Lean on Me" is a pretty boring cover that more or less rips off the cover done by Club Nouveau only 4 years before. It simply doesn't add enough different to make the tune DCT's own, save a brief Toby rap break. (The Nouveau rendition stripped the soulful plaintiveness of Bill Withers' original, so I'm not sure why they chose to emulate the clearly inferior version anyhow.) "WDCT" is the weakest of the interludes heard here.
BOTTOM LINE:
Quantum leap from NU THANG. At the time, it managed to get them onto the then super-hip Arsenio Hall show (the "2 Honks and a Negro" bit was taken from that appearance). I consider this their best release. (CCM Magazine has also named this as the #9 Christian album of all time.)
3 1/2 stars
Life Changing..........2006-02-19
This album changed my life during my formative years. It was nice to have music without all of the cursing and blatant sexual overtures during a time when it was prevalent in jr/high school. It helped me to stay the straight and narrow, yet have some fun, hip music.
Nearly 14 years later, it still has the same effect on me. While I may listen to secular music today, I still feel good listening to DC Talk's Free At Last and reminds me why I'm a Christian.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Mixture of South African Pop and Gospel.......2003-03-20
Malope has a lovely, full, rich, powerful voice which she uses to great effect in these beautiful, sometimes overwhelmingly emotional songs.
The songs on this album are a mixture of traditional American gospel and township pop. In other words, it sounds more like pop music than does the average gospel cd. However, the pop doesn't dilute the gospel at all, because township pop is definitely not sappy love songs - it's the powerful expression of a suppressed culture. Malope seems to have found in religious music a way to express the hardships and yearnings of her life.
Malope grew up in the South African countryside under apartheid, and at the age of 16 moved to Johannesburg, where she lived as a beggar until her musical talent was discovered. She sampled many kinds of music, but gospel suits her best, and is the style she is now known for.
The sound quality of this cd is very good, and the musicians and backup singers are excellent. The songs originally appeared from 1990 to 1996, and they have been remasterd. 4 of the 13 songs are in English; the rest I believe are in Zulu. The English lyrics, and an English translation of the Zulu lyrics, are included in the packaging, as is an essay on Malope's life.
I found this cd very moving. Even people who are not interested in gospel usually love it.
We need another star.......2003-01-17
This is a beautiful piece of art. I can't even describe the emotions associated with listening to this album. It is just heavenly. The interaction of the voices, the shape of the words, and especially the english translation are incredible. This is one of my most treasured pieces of music.
This CD is "BEYOND A 5 STAR RATING".......2002-09-12
I discovered this CD in the library about 2 years ago and have been searching for it ever since, until now. Rebecca has a fabulous voice. A few songs are in English and most are African dialect, which I prefer. I am a musician, singer/songwriter and appreciate each song. This CD moves me to joyous tears every time I play it. The 3 tracks I have chosen for our wedding are #5 - Buyani, #8 - Umoya Wam and #9 - Ngegazi Lemvana. While it is a gospel CD it can be embraced by all folks no matter their religious forte, age, gender, etc. I would love to attend in person one and plenty more of her concerts. BRING HER HERE TO MAPLE RIDGE, BC, CANADA AND I GUARENTEE SHE AND HER ENSEMBLE WILL SELL EVERY TICKET, BAR NONE! It has become and shall stay as one of my top 3 favourites of all time. I dance in my kitchen, blast it while driving in my car, and with great joy imagine sharing it with our wedding guests.

Not impressed.......2003-11-25
I was not terribly impressed with this CD. Fortunately, I decided to get it from the library to see if it was good before deciding whether or not to buy it.
Although the orchestration of the songs is well done, most of them simply were not meant to be performed by a chorus; and they sound terrible in that form. If you want some of the songs on this CD, I suggest you look at one of Disney's compilation CDs in the Classic Disney Vol. 1-5 series or the actual soundtracks of the movies.
Inexorable wonder!.......2001-06-23
Where to start?! Erich Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops Orchestra have had a track record for recording some of the most stupendous movie music ever. Magical Musicals is just another example of how audaciously bold, yet beautiful Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have taken the original scores, molded them into the same pieces, yet at the same time, creating life of their own in each and every note. If you are looking for ANY soundtrack containing Disney music, this should be the first CD you listen to. There are others out there, and yes, they may sound beautiful and enchanting, but you won't find such a unique and compelling score anywhere else other than this CD. Check it out!!

Customer Reviews:
Goldie's Last Day better than PFR's last albums.......2005-03-22
Goldie's Last Day features PFR before they began to take themselves too seriously. The tracks all sound like typical PFR songs -tight vocal harmonies, clever chord arrangements, and nice work from long-time producer Jimmy Lee Sloas; the big difference between this album and later albums from PFR is the lightness of the lyrical matter. The title track is about a dog for goodness sakes!
The band often proved their ability to pen a generic radio hit (ie: The Love I Know from the album "Great Lengths" or Line of Love from "Them") and this album has what is probably the best of the band's three big hits in the song "That Kind of Love." Still the band is at their best when they lighten up and the best tracks on this album are Shine, Spinnin' Round, Wait For the Sun, and the title track.
Contrary to other reviews, I recommend this album over the other -still solid- PFR releases.
Okay for a start.......2004-04-17
I had heard "Them" and "Disappear" and wanted to see what PfR was like in the beginning, so I got "Goldie's Last Day". I was disappointed. Now, don't get me wrong, the album has some good songs on it, but it doesn't match up at all to any more recent albums they've done. It has a very, very strong early 90's rock sound and is produced poorly so it sounds very cheezy at times. However, some of the genius songwriting comes through it all at times, such as "By Myself". I would suggest only buying this album if you're a diehard fan and really just need the album to be complete, or if the album is on sale for like 5 dollars or less (I got a tape of it for 3 dollars). If you want to start listening to PfR and are looking for a good "first album", try out "Them" and then "Disappear". "Them" is better when it comes to the music but "Disappear" is produced alot better (like a million times better), although both are alot better and more mature than "Goldie's Last Day".

Historically significant music, wonderfully performed!.......2004-06-01
Each of the composers here was a significant contributor to the Harlem Renaissance and by tune or text, these works document the coming jazz explosion. Many have never before been recorded.
For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Now this wealth of music is available outside the concert hall through a series of recordings called WITNESS.
The other three CDs are available as single titles, or in the boxed set THE WITNESS COLLECTION which includes:
WHAT A MIGHTY GOD: Spirituals and Gospels for Chorus
DANCE LIKE THE WIND: Music of Today's Black Composers
GOT THE SAINT LOUIS BLUES: Classical Music in the Jazz Age
SKYWARD MY PEOPLE ROSE: Music of William Grant Still
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
